Colleen Slabaugh, 74

Colleen Slabaugh, 74, who was a parent volunteer for Parkway Little League and Boy Scout Troop 421, died Saturday while on a weekend trip to Reno.

The cause was a heart attack, said her son, Tom Slabaugh II.

During the 1970s, Mrs. Slabaugh also played an unofficial but influential role in turning Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs' Explorer Post 517 into a success story.

Her husband, Tom, then a sheriff's sergeant, was volunteer adviser to the post, in which hundreds of teenagers participated.

Scores of them went on to become police officers, sheriff's deputies and Highway Patrol officers.

"Colleen was supportive and encouraging to all of us," said sheriff's Capt. John McGinnis, who as a teenager was a member of Post 517. "It was all unofficial, but she played a key role in making the post work."

Colleen Neva Slabaugh, a native of Sacramento, was the daughter of the former Charlotte Babcock and Manuel Castro.

After graduating from Sacramento High School, she attended Sacramento Junior College's nursing program, becoming a registered nurse.

Over the years, she worked in nursing homes, doctors' offices and hospitals.

When her sons and daughter were young, Mrs. Slabaugh stayed busy as a volunteer in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Campfire groups in the Parkway neighborhood where she and Tom Slabaugh reared their family.

In 1995, according to her family, Mrs. Slabaugh suffered a severe stroke, but was back on her feet within two months, surprising everyone, including her doctors.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Slabaugh of Sacramento; sons, Thomas II and Robert, both of Elk Grove; stepson, Richard Slabaugh of Sacramento; daughter, Norene Rouse of Elk Grove; sister, Louella Ungstand of Sacramento; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 7595 Center Parkway.
