Bertha Gail Shaidell

Private services for Bertha Gail Shaidell, 89, of Napa will be held for family members only.

Interment will be private.

Born Dec. 10, 1908, in Addington, Okla., Mrs. Shaidell died April 6, 1998, in Pleasant Care Convalescent Hospital after a long illness.

A resident of Napa for 25 years, she was a homemaker all of her adult life. She was a Grey Lady for many years as well as a volunteer at Napa State Hospital.

Mrs. Shaidell is survived by her daughters, Sherry of Fairfield and Linda of Napa; sons, Donald of Studio City and Harry Edward Jr. of Placerville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Myrtle 'Sally' Butterworth

A memorial service for Myrtle "Sally" Butterworth, 97, of Nampa, Idaho, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Alsip Funeral Chapel in Nampa.

Born May 4, 1900, in Stromsburg, Neb., Mrs. Butterworth died April 7, 1998, at a Nampa care center. She grew up in Big Sandy, Mont., and had also lived in Kansas, Texas, Oregon, Idaho and Vacaville.

She worked as a chemical tester for Basic Foods Inc., in Vacaville.

Mrs. Butterworth enjoyed traveling, growing and tending to flowers of all kinds. She had a passion for African violets and chrysanthemums. She ordered bulbs every year from Holland. She also had a lifelong love for birds, and had several birdhouses.

She enjoyed writing letters to her friends and also worked crossword puzzles. She attended the Nampa First Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Butterworth is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Dennis Yohner of Rapid City, S.C., Elsie and Joseph of San Jose, and Barbara Anderson and Harold of Nampa; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Pat Smith of Central Point, Ore., son, Robert Ball of Spokane, Wash.; sister, Dorothea Bond of Nampa; brother, Walter Clark of Amity, Ore.; and several grandchildren.

Patricia Platkin-Frederick

Funeral services for Patricia Platkin-Frederick, 53, of Vacaville will be held at 10 a.m. today at Temple Beth Torah in Fremont.

Burial will be at Lima Family Cedar Lawn Mortuary in San Jose.

Mrs. Platkin-Frederick died April 6, 1998, at the University of California, Davis Medical Center after a long illness.

Born Nov. 11, 1944, in Oakland, she moved to the area in 1990.

In addition to being a housewife, she owned a stereo retail store for 20 years. She also volunteered at O'Conner Hospital in San Jose and at NorthBay Medical Center.

Mrs. Platkin-Frederick is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter, Nanette Mills; brothers, Frank, Louis and Phillip Pollock; sisters, Bernadette Welsh and Theresa Davis; and grandson Ryan Mills.

Memorial contributions can be made to Temple Beth Torah, 4200 Paseo Padre Parkway, Fremont 94539.

Arcadio Abalos Baniqued

A Mass of Christian Burial for Arcadio Abalos Baniqued, 91, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

The Rev. Luciano Valenzuela will preside. Burial will be in Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born Dec. 19, 1906, in the Philippines, Mr. Baniqued died April 2, 1998, at his Fairfield home. He lived in Fairfield for 68 years.

Mr. Baniqued was a farm worker for several years. He was a member of the Canaolan and Vicinity Association Pangasinan of Northern California.

Mr. Baniqued is survived by his wife, Trinidad of Fairfield; niece, Rosita B.L. Pascual of San Jose; nephew, Lorenzo Lopez of San Jose; six grandchildren in San Jose and 18 in the Philippines; and seven great-grandchildren in the Philippines.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. A vigil service will be 5 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Gregory E. Caughrean

A memorial service for Gregory E. Caughrean, 48, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Deputy Sheriff's Association Hall, 1780 Muir Road in Martinez.

The Rev. Duane Woida will preside. Inurnment will be private.

Born July 5, 1949, in Berkeley, Mr. Caughrean died from complications of pancreatic cancer on April 5, 1998, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo. He was told he had cancer three weeks ago.

A 21-year resident of Solano County, Mr. Caughrean worked for the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department for 20 years. He held the position of sergeant for the past seven years.

Mr. Caughrean and his family had for the past 12 years been building a 50-foot Columbia sailboat for cruising. His hobbies included photography and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Melody; sons, Brad, Tom and Scott of Vacaville; sister, Diane Caughrean-Viera of Lafayette; and his father, Hal of Sacramento.

Contributions can be made in his name to the American Cancer Society for pancreatic cancer research.

Frank Dewey Cretser

Upon his request, there will be no services for Frank Dewey Cretser, 72, of Fairfield.

Born Dec. 21, 1925, in El Cerrito, Mr. Cretser died April 9, 1998, in Fairfield after a short illness. He lived in Vacaville for the past six years.

Mr. Cretser served with the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. After his service, he was a plumber. Also, he enjoyed fishing and gardening and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Cretser is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Vacaville; daughters, Cathy of Vacaville and Cynthia Robinson of Sacramento; son, Frank of Oregon; sister, Dorothe Wilson of Hawaii; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements are by McCune Garden Chapel.

Dean Arthur Dunbar

Funeral services for Dean Arthur Dunbar, 72, will be next week in St. Johnsbury, Vt. Burial will also be in Vermont at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Born March 23, 1926, in Vermont, Mr. Dunbar died April 8, 1998, at his Fairfield home.

He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, and the Air Force from 1950 to 1967, from which he retired as a master sergeant.

He was a World War II veteran with the Navy in the South Pacific, and a Korean War veteran with the Air Force.

He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy. After retiring from the Air Force, he was a licensed building contractor and retired from building in 1988.

He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, Travis Retired Enlistedmen's Association, and American Association of Retired Persons.

Mr. Dunbar is survived by his wife, Theresa of Fairfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Bob Thoraldson of Cameron Park and Michelle Perkins of Fairfield; sons, Dean Terrance of Fairfield and Timothy Dale of Moorpark; sister, Pauline Hart of Wells River, Vt.; brothers, Harold of West Barnet, N.H., Neal of Monroe, Vt., and Dale of McIndoe, Vt.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Jerry Henry Grayson

A memorial service for Jerry Henry Grayson, 44, of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

The Rev. John Harris of New Life Church will preside. Inurnment will be private.

Born Oct. 14, 1953, in Kansas City, Mo., Mr. Grayson died April 3, 1998, in Fairfield after a long illness.

He served in the Navy for three years, and worked for the United States Mint for a year. For 24 years, Mr. Grayson worked as a welder at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo. He was a member of the Navy Yard Association.

He loved metalworking, reading and coaching softball for his daughters. He also coached baseball and soccer at the youth level.

Mr. Grayson is survived by his wife, Nannette of Fairfield; daughters and son-in-law, Dawn Marie and Lance Fischer of Bakersfield and Heather Nicole of Fairfield; son, Christian Michael of San Francisco; brother, Larry McDonald of Kansas City; sisters, Anna Lorene Payne and Marian Lucille Fannin, both of Kansas City, Georgia Lou Pope of Orrick, Mo., Carleen Sue Hall of Columbia, Mo., and Sharon Battagler of Independence, Mo.; mother, Margie McQuarters of Kansas City; stepfather, Carl McDonald of Kansas City; father-in-law, Alfred Maffei of San Francisco; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Michael David Spurlock

Private family services for Michael David Spurlock, 34, will be Saturday at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

The Rev. Michael Downey of Holy Spirit Catholic Church will preside. Burial will be private.

Born June 26, 1963, in Hanford, Mr. Spurlock died April 6, 1998, at his home in Vacaville. He was a small-engine mechanic, having received schooling and training through S & S Sharpening Co. He was active in automobile shows.

Mr. Spurlock is survived by by his father, Tom of Lindsey; mother, Abigail Cervacio of Suisun City; brother, Marino Cervacio of Suisun City; stepbrothers, Jim and John Belcher of Porterville; sister, Deborah A. of Sacramento; two nieces; and companion, Andrea Smith of Vacaville.

A gathering will be held after the memorial service at 5 p.m. at 144 Hyannis Court in Vacaville.

Frank Tiscornia

Funeral services were held for Frank Tiscornia, 92.

A native of Oakland, Mr. Tiscornia graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. He retired from Langdorf Bakery and enjoyed electronics, family, food and traveling.

He is survived by his children, Joan Suokko of San Leandro, Leah Brezinski of Vacaville, Cecil Selburn of Vacaville and Vivian Speas of Sutter Creek; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland.

Ernie A. Young

A memorial service was held for Ernie A. Young, M.D., of Winters. Born June 18, 1920, in Commerce, Texas, he died March 17, 1998, at home after a long illness. He was 77.

Mr. Young moved to Winters in 1954. During his tenure as a local physician, he served on the Winters City Council and served as mayor for two years.

He and his brother, Dr. Corbin Young, served as team physicians for athletes, and the Winters High School gymnasium is named for them.

He was a charter member of the Winters Rotary Club and served as parade marshal for Winters Youth Day in 1983.

Mr. Young received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Texas State University in Commerce. During World War II, he was a naval aviator and served in North Africa and England.

He received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and later was a flight surgeon in the Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from practice in 1992.

In February 1993, at the Convention of the California Medical Association, Mr. Young was awarded the Frederick K.M. Plessner Memorial Award, given annually to a California physician who best exemplifies the ethics and practice of a rural physician.

He was awarded the Dr. John H. Jones Public Service Award in April 1993 in recognition of his contributions to health care for the medically underserved in Yolo County. He was a member of Yolo County Medical Society, California Medical Association and the American Medical Association.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nell A. "Rusty" Young; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and William Parkhurst of Phoenix, and Jan and Duwayne Dunham of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Jamie and Cathryn Lindeman, both of Phoenix, and Todd and Hailey Dunham, both of Los Angeles; sisters, Jeanne Wheeler of Vacaville and Miriam of Sacramento; nephews, Jim Wheeler of Seattle, Paul Wheeler of Vacaville and David, Bert and Frank Young, all of Winters; and nieces, Elizabeth Coman of Winters and Melinda Cooke of Arlington, Va.

William Mason Reid

Graveside services for William Mason Reid, 77, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Monday in Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

The Rev. Patrick Coyne of Colma will officiate.

Mr. Reid died April 8, 1998, in VacaValley Hospital following a sudden illness.

Born Nov. 15, 1920, in Arizona, he moved to the area nine months ago. He was a rates and billing specialist for Western Pacific Railroad for 30 years. He was a caller and enjoyed exhibition square dancing for many years.

Mr. Reid was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks. He also loved fishing and sports.

Mr. Reid is survived by his son, William of Campbell; daughters, Leslie Fullerton of Fallbrook, Lynn Reid of La Mesa, and Lori Bolland of San Diego; and grandchildren, Robbie Fullerton of Fallbrook, Carly and Nathan Krewitsky of La Mesa.

Arrangements are under the direction of Vaca Hills Chapel.
