DAVID GRANT MILLS It is with a deep sense of sorrow and regret that the family of David Grant Mills announces his passing on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 7:30 in the morning. Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Kay Mills, David is survived by his dearly beloved wife Dorest Ryan-Mills and her children, George and Claudette Licorish; by his sister Bonnie Winick; her husband Robert; their children and grandchildren
. Born September 28, 1938 in the old General Hospital, David was a Winnipegger almost all his life and proud to be so. Raised first in Norwood and then in the Crescentwood area, he attended Grosvenor Elementary School, Robert H. Smith when it was a junior high, and Kelvin High School. During these growing up years, David was actively involved in school choirs, cubs and scouts, YMCA activities, high school operettas and dramatic productions, working on his school newspaper and year book, The Order of Demulay, and like most boys, sports, especially baseball, hockey, and basketball, where he played on teams at both school and community club levels. Following high school David attended both the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba in preparation for a career in education. He taught one year in Waskada, MB before returning to Winnipeg where he spent the rest of his career with the St. James - Assiniboia School Division where he became a popular and well respected teacher of Social Studies and History at St. James Collegiate, Deer Lodge Junior High, and John Taylor Collegiate. In his retirement years, David enjoyed reading widely on a pot-pourri of subjects, both for pleasure and for knowledge; he was an avid cryptic crossword fan and he kept up an ongoing study of history and current affairs. He enjoyed socializing with colleagues and friends, especially his long time buddies at the Jimmy and during the past eight years, it was his particular pleasure and pride to have been a volunteer reader at the CNIB recording talking books for the benefit of the blind and visually impaired. He regarded it as a privilege to be associated with the fine group of staff and volunteers dedicated to this task. Cremation has taken place and at David's request, there will be no formal funeral or service of remembrance. He wished only to be remembered in your hearts. If friends so desire, a contribution in David's name can be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, 1080 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. AGNES MOROZ (nee HARPIN) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother and grandmother on Friday, October 22, 2004 at the age of 65. Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren; best friend Rosaire Fontaine; her brother Gilles; her children, Clement (Arlene), Michelle (Gary), Pauline (Michael), Alex (Penny), Lorena (Dahljeet), Patricia (Robert), Pearl (James), John (Karen). She was predeceased by her husband Steve. Mom treasured her time spent with family and friends. She loved the peace and quiet of life in the country. She also enjoyed travelling in her later years. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at St. James Gospel Church, 337 Inglewood, on Thursday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m.

ANNIE NOVAK nee NEMETCHEK Annie Novak, age 83, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Friday, October 22, 2004 at the Victoria Hospital. Annie was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1999; two grandchildren, April in 1981 and Preston in 2004; her two brothers Joseph, Thomas and an infant brother. Annie will be lovingly remembered by her children; Joseph (Adella), Bernie (Lorna), Jerry (Julie) of Calgary, and George (Donna) of Calgary; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and brother Walter (Mary) of Minitonas, MB. She was born
in Mirotin, Poland, November 28, 1920. At the age of eight she came to Canada with her family and settled in Ravensworth. Annie was educated in Ravensworth and was one of the members of the school softball team. She left school to help with the cooking on the family farm. At the age of seventeen she married
her husband Walter. They farmed and raised their family in the Minitonas area. In 1955 they moved to Winnipeg where her husband was a building contractor. Annie continued her culinary skills at the T. Eaton Co., Garwood Grill and at Grant Memorial Baptist Church on Colony and then later on Wilkes Avenue. She loved to serve the Lord catering and baking buns in the Grant Memorial Church kitchen. In the last year or two when her strength was failing she had to wind down her catering , but said "now I can pray more." Having a great burden for her grandchildren she prayed for each of them by name on a regular basis. Her commitment to her Lord, her church and her family continued until her last day. The family would like to thank the staff of the Victoria General Hospital for the compassionate love and care Annie received. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 26, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 27, at 11:00 a.m. at Grant Memorial Baptist Church, 877 Wilkes Avenue. A time of fellowship will follow the service. AUDREY L. PROUTT (nee LIEBRECHT) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Audrey Proutt, on October 21, 2004 at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 72. Left behind to cherish her memory are her children, Brian, Lynn (Craig), Louise (Jim), and their father Walter; grandchildren, Ryan, Shane (Melanie), Sheldon; and great-grandson Brandon. She also leaves to mourn her sisters, Margaret and Evelyn; brother Dennis; several nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Audrey was predeceased by her parents, George and Louise; brothers, Edward and Adolph, and sisters, Florence and June. Mom was a very devoted, compassionate, selfless and loving woman. Many lives have been touched and enriched by Mom's generous and nurturing nature. Many of her years have been spent caring for her family. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, October 26 at 3:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. The service will conclude at the Chapel. ERNEST JOHN SMITH M.ARCH, FRAIC, RCA December 17, 1919 - October 22, 2004 Ernest passed away peacefully in The Pas, MB, with his family by his side while listening to his favourite music. Left to celebrate his life are his children, Lynda, Emily (Nick), Christopher (Connie); grandchildren, Steven and Jeffery; sister Vera; brother Robert; and many relatives. Born and educated in Winnipeg, he grew up on Aubrey Street. He attended the University of Manitoba where he attained his Bachelor's degree in Architecture and where he won the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal. He later received a scholarship to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston where he received his Masters Degree. Ernest enjoyed nature. He spent his summers on Lake Winnipeg, as a youth at Grand Beach and later with his family at their cottage at Hillside Beach. It was at Grand Beach where he met the love of his life ("on the boardwalk") - Marjorie his wife of 48 years. They were blessed with three children Lynda, Emily and Christopher. It was at the lake where he enjoyed fishing, boating and swimming, working on the cottage and most of all - entertaining family and friends. Later in life he enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and the summers at Hillside Beach where he designed and built his retirement home, which was featured at The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts "Prairie Region Exhibition" at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1997. He looked forward to getting away with the "boys" on their annual fishing trips to Pisces Island on Labyrinth Bay, Lake of the Woods. It is here where he could let his hair down, build "stuff", fish and explore the wilderness. This was truly a special part in his life. Ernest's passion was Architecture. While at the U. of M. he and his friends Dennis Carter and Walter Katelnikoff made a commitment to start an architectural practice in Winnipeg upon Ernest's graduation from MIT. In 1947, the firm that has sustained the name Smith Carter was established and became a prominent name in Architecture in Manitoba, across Canada and elsewhere. In the early years he taught design at the University while building the practice and "beating the bushes" throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario pursuing school, church and hospital projects. Ernest functioned as managing partner of Smith Carter until his retirement in 1985 after 38 years in practice. He was particularly proud of the influence the firm had on the skyline of Winnipeg and his accomplishments related to international work. Notable projects include the Pan-Am Swimming Pool, Centennial Centre (the Centennial Concert Hall, Planetarium, and Museum of Man and Nature), Lombard Place/Richardson Building, Bank of Nova Scotia and Concourse at Portage and Main, Place d'Accuiel Expo 67 in Montreal, the Canadian Chancery Building in Warsaw Poland, Kermanshah Technical Training Centre in Iran and the Canadian Embassy Building in Moscow. Over the years Ernest held numerous professional postings and honours. He always felt this was an important aspect of his life, not only to strengthen his career but also to advance the Architectural profession. Notable activities included: President of the Manitoba Association of Architects (1956-61) and Life Member (2000), Chairman of the National Joint Committee on Construction Materials (1963-65), Dean of the College of Fellows (1972-75) and Chancellor of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (1979). Ernest enjoyed and supported the arts. Over the years he was a member of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, co-chairman of the Fine Arts Committee for the Centennial Cultural Centre (1967) and participated in varying capacities on the board of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, including President from 1969-71. He was a member of Council of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1974) and later donated his time to fundraising pursuits for the RCA. He was particularly fond of playing the piano and upon retirement took lessons for many years to advance his playing skills. He remained a dedicated husband to his wife Marjorie and following her illness took on the responsibility for her day-to-day care. His efforts were tireless to ensure that the quality of her life was maintained until her death in 1993. He continued to live at Hillside Beach until 1998 when he moved to Winnipeg where he lived at The Wellington. In 2001, he moved to St. Paul's Personal Care home in The Pas where his son Chris resides with his family. A memorial service to celebrate Ernest's life will be held in Winnipeg at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Ave., 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 28. BARBARA MARY SMITH (nee THOULD) Peacefully on Friday, October 22, 2004, at the age of 84, Barbara Smith passed away at Concordia Hospital. Barbara leaves to mourn her loving husband, Jack; and her three children, Tom (Stephanie), Jane and Susan; grandchildren, Robert Niesler, Barbara Niesler, Lyle (Shannon) Wiebe, Dale Wiebe, Steven Smith and Wendy Smith. Barb will be sorely missed by her sisters, Margaret (Peggy) (Gord) and Ada (Bert); her sisters-in-law, Hildred Thould, Grace Ainge and Dorothy Smith; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Ada Thould; her brothers, Tom and Jim; and her sister Joan. Barb's life revolved around her family and friends. She always had the time for a kind word, a helping hand and best of all you could count on her for a laugh. Barb had unselfishly given a lot back to her community of Transcona. She was still active with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the United Church Women's Group. Some of her many pastimes included curling, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and up until the past few years, spending time at the cottage in Echo Bay. Bingo and spending time at the Club Regent Casino was one of the favourite ways she liked to spend her time. Since their retirement Barb and Jack spent many happy holidays travelling throughout Canada and in the southern United States. Barb's family would like to express their appreciation and thanks to the wonderful health care staff at Concordia Hospital wards Emergency and N1South. THEODORA (DIPLOUDI) STACHOW Theodora Stachow passed away peacefully on Saturday October 23, 2004 at Holy Family Nursing Home at the age of 87 years. Theodora was born
on March 17 1917 in the village of Lithi, at Chios, Greece. She emigrated to Winnipeg in 1961 joining her sister Lemonia's family. She married
Paul Stachow and together they enjoyed keeping a tidy home and lovely garden. Theodora is survived by nephew George (Susan) and Peter Siamandas, niece Mary (Kosta) Kolitsas, and numerous nephews and nieces in Greece. She was predeceased by her husband Paul Stachow; sisters, Despina, Christina, Kiriaki, Marika, Lemonia, and Anna; brothers, Basilis and Diamantis and her parents Simeon and Maria. Thanks to the caring staff of Holy Family Nursing home, St Mary's Ward who have shown loving care of Theodora for six years. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. at St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday October 24. MARGARET STEVENS On October 23, 2004 at Riverview Health Centre, Margaret, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 74. Margaret is survived by her three sons, Len and Susan Stevens of Bragg Creek, AB, Don and Jo-Anne Stevens of Winnipeg and Darrell and Anna Stevens of Vancouver, BC; her two grandchildren, Chantelle and Jaxon Stevens; and her dear friend Pauline Couch. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sister Hope and Earl Gibbons as well as three nieces. Margaret was predeceased by her grandson Mitchell Stevens. Margaret was a dedicated mother and a strong influence on the lives of her three sons. She recently celebrated her 74th birthday. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace General Hospital Emergency/ICU departments and Riverview Health Centre for their compassion and care. JOYCE THORVALDSON Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, Joyce Thorvaldson, of Petersfield, MB, beloved mother of her only child, daughter Shaun; beloved companion of Joe Sarna; passed away on October 22,2004 at the Selkirk and District General Hospital. Joyce was born
in Winnipeg on June 13, 1947 and lived her early years in St. Andrews, MB. As a young lady she took hairdressing courses and carried on with a lifelong career as a hairdresser. She worked at several salons before opening her own, Wave Lengths in Selkirk, which she operated for 13 years. After a short retirement she resurfaced to become Joe's number one assistant at the Selkirk Motor Hotel. Joyce's outgoing and bubbly personality provided her with many good friends over the years. She always had things to do, cooking, gardening, housekeeping and of course a little time for a short bubbly. Joyce enjoyed travelling, fishing and especially curling where she curled for many years at both Selkirk and Petersfield Curling Clubs. Joyce lived life to the fullest and will always be remembered as an easy going, caring and loving person. Besides her daughter Shaun and companion Joe, she leaves surviving a brother, Ron Bochen (Maryann); brothers-in-law, Lorne Thorvaldson (Sharon) and Mickey Donohoe; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Rose Bochen and a sister Janice Donohoe. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Selkirk Palliative Care Unit, Box 5000, Selkirk, R1A 2M2. AUSTIN BOE WILLIS Suddenly on Thursday, October 21, 2004 Austin Boe Willis, aged 16, passed away at Teulon, MB. December 8, 1987 at Teulon Hunter Memorial Hospital living first in the Teulon area and then in Alberta for his pre-school years. The family then returned to Manitoba where Austin attended Teulon Elementary School and Teulon Collegiate. He played hockey and baseball and enjoyed spending time at the computer, playing video games and working with any kind of equipment or machines. Little children loved him because of his quiet, gentle nature. A service celebrating Austin's life (to which all are invited) will be held this evening, Monday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre followed immediately by a time of lunch and fellowship. RUSSELL JAROSLAW BODNAR Peacefully, on Friday, October 22, 2004, at Health Sciences Centre, Russell Jaroslaw Bodnar, aged 82, beloved husband of Maria. Russell was born
March 14, 1922, in selo Chovechi, rayon Holochivskoho, Lvivski oblast, Ukraine. In 1938, together with his parents and two sisters, Olya and Halyna, he immigrated to Canada, settling and farming firstly in Saskatchewan and then a short time later, moving to Benito, MB. When visiting Ukraine, he met his wife Maria and for seven and one-half years, tried to sponsor her to Canada where they married
in 1983. In 1994, due to Russell's poor health, they moved to Winnipeg. Russell was a very spiritual man who attended church and sang in the Benito Church Choir. He loved to read newspapers and books, especially about the history of Ukraine. He was a very generous donor to the church and to Pomich Ukraini. He had a love of Ukrainian songs and music. Russell leaves to cherish his memory his wife Maria; son and grandchildren; sister Halyna; and brother-in-law John Hrytsenko. TARA ELEANORE BRYER Suddenly, but peacefully at home on Thursday, October 21, 2004, Tara Eleanore Bryer, "Stubb", our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, an aunt, sister, daughter and a friend to all who knew her, passed away. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her five children, Robert, Rodney (Yvonne), of Calgary, Rickey (Michelle), Terry (Maria) and Rose-Lynne (Tony); the love of her life were her grandchildren, Aimee-Jean, Robert Jr., Stephanie, Shane, Sabrina, Kenton Jr., Crystal, Isabella, Lance and Cherrena "Six"; great-grandchildren, Heaven and Jason; sisters, Clara (Lloyd), of Molson, MB, and Shirley (Dave) Chrush of Calgary. Tara was predeceased by her parents, Bert (1990), Mary (1999), and nephew Guisseppe (1963). Tara was born
in Brokenhead Municipality on March 27, 1939, first of three daughters for Bert and Mary. She lived and worked on her parent's farm in Golden Bay and attended Golden Bay School. At 18 she travelled from the East to the West Coast, and finally came back to Winning. Tara received her Teacher's Diploma in 1970. She drove for Duffy taxi during the 80s, and the 90s, when she was diagnosed with cancer. Tara enjoyed life by doing all for everyone in and out of her community. She spent her time by knitting slippers and other crafts, making stuffed animals and garage sales. But her best friends are still waiting for her, Kane, her loving dog, and her four fishes. Tara fought for each step she took, and now she has peace. A very special thank you to her son, Robert Simoneau, who took care of her so very well. Thank you to B-Bobin, from my heart. Thanks Bro. The family would like to thank her Drs. Jolly and Tan, for everything. If it wasn't for the two of you, we could not have had the time that we did.
