MADELINE MARGUERITE LANG (nee GRAY) Peacefully and in the company of her niece Marilyn McNamara, October 22, 2004 at Trent Valley Lodge, Trenton, ON, Madeline Lang passed away in her 92nd year She was predeceased by her husband Garnet; brother Lloyd Gray; sisters, Arla Gruenke, Frances Kapitan and Alice Ginn; and by two nephews, Carman (Don) Gray and Douglas Gruenke. She is survived by her sister Thelma Fanning of Vancouver; nine nieces and nephews and their families. Madeline, known also as "Madge", "Bun" or simply "Aunt Bun" to so many was born
May 13, 1913 the second youngest daughter of Frank and Leila Gray. Growing up in the Dominion City area of Manitoba, she was always quite active in the community, although illness in her teens prevented her from pursuing her dream of a nursing career. Following her marriage to Garnet Lang, she moved to Langside, near Arnaud where they and Garnet's brother Ted, farmed together. The Lang's usually boarded the teacher of Langside School and Madge was well known for her great meals. Many of the teachers kept in touch with Madge and Garnet through the years. In 1965, the Lang's retired to Winnipeg where Madge cared for both Ted and Garnet in their declining years. In 1984, Madeline moved to the St. James Kiwanis Lodge, 100 Sinawik Bay where she was a Charter Member and an active participant in many of the activities available there. She enjoyed cribbage, bridge, shuffleboard and also worked on different committees. In November 2001, in failing health, Madge moved to Trenton, to live with her niece Marilyn McNamara and husband Tom. Madge enjoyed the birds, flowers, garden and her Saturday night hockey. In June 2004 she was hospitalized and in August was admitted to Trent Valley Lodge Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. Visitation in the Chapel on Friday, October 29 from 2:00 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be nephews, Cliff Ginn, Clayton Gray, Ken Fanning, Gary Fanning, Ken Gruenke; and great-nephew Trent Gruenke. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer Society or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. ELIZABETH MARGARET (BETTY) LAWLER It is with deep sadness that the family of Elizabeth Lawler announces her passing on October 24, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg. She celebrated her 80th birthday in March with many of her dear friends in attendance. She is survived by her husband Herbert and five children, John, David (June), Ann (Fred), Elizabeth (Rob), Jane (Jamie); and six grandchildren, John and Andrew Lawler, Fraser, Gordon and Robbie Bruce and Riley Black. Betty's love and study of painting began at the age of seven with lessons from Andre Bieler of Queen's University. Later in life, she returned to university and attained her B.F.A. at the School of Art, University of Manitoba. She was an accomplished artist and became a member of the Manitoba Society of Artists exhibiting her work in several shows. Her other love was reading and Betty poured through books of every kind at astonishing speed. Betty had many dear friends during the nine years she and Herb lived in London, ON, and enjoyed her volunteer years with the Maycourt Society. Among her many interests in Winnipeg, including her wonderfully full social life with her dear friends (her children always remarked that she did more in one week than they would do in a year), she was part of the Women's Committee of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Antiques Association. She was always thinking of others and has inspired many with her warmth and generosity. Some of her fondest memories were of her summers at Heming Lake in Northern Manitoba and at Lake of the Woods. Hosting cocktail parties, sewing, knitting, painting, baking - always a project on the go. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends for her cheery personality, wonderful sense of humour, great wit, strong spirit and her genuine interest in her friends. She adored her grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. A private gathering of close friends will be held in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Association would be greatly appreciated. in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal on March 27, 1935. Manuel was predeceased by his wife Maria Lourdes. He is survived by his son Emanuel (Khilila); brother John (Benvinda), as well as Antonio (Cidalia) and Alda of Portugal; brother-in-law Jose Ferreira (Conceicao), and Francisco Moniz (Fatima). He also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, relatives as well as friends. Prayer services will be held on Tuesday, October 26 at 8:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin St. N. by Fr. Jose Eduardo Medeiros. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m. also at the church with interment to follow at the Assumption Cemetery. RONALD (RON) ARNOLD NOWAKOWSKI Suddenly, after a short illness, Ron Nowakowski, 56 years old, passed away October 21, 2004. Ron was born
in Winnipeg, MB on November 26, 1947. He is survived by his wife Janet; children, Andrew, Kayla, Adam and Gabriel Bedard; sister Adeline Huppe (Doug) of Calgary, AB; brother Don (Doreen) and family; brother Frank; cousin Ann. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, kids, brothers, sister, family, special friends and Sparky. He was predeceased by his father, Adam (1981) and mother, Rozalia (1995). Ron worked at a variety of different jobs in his life, City of Winnipeg, Insect Control Branch (six years) and most recently, West Kildonan Golf Course (10 years). Ron loved hobbies in the garage, fixing things for family and friends. He also loved playing "Pacman" with his kids, dice with friends, fishing and camping and cooking his special dishes. He would always help a friend in need. Ron was a truly devoted father, and always there for his family through the good times as well as the bad. A person always knew they were well-liked, when Ron gave them a Nick Name. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ron's life will be held on Thursday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. At family's request, flowers gratefully declined, donations may be made in Ron's memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Manitoba Diabetes. NICHOLAS PASHKO It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of our much-loved father and grandfather, Nicholas Pashko, on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at Misericordia Health Centre. Nicholas was born
in Bystritsia, Ukraine on February 28, 1920. He was sponsored to Canada by his aunt and uncle, Tina and Ted Romaniuk in the early 1950s. He worked at his uncle's garage on McPhillips until his employment at the Greater Winnipeg Gas Company when he retired in 1984. He loved life and especially loved to socialize with many friends and family. He was an established singer and Ukrainian dancer, having done both for many years and was a licensed choir conductor. He also loved to cook and taught his children to cook many Ukrainian dishes over the years. He was famous for his cabbage rolls, borscht and perogies but especially for his pies. Nicholas was predeceased by his parents, George and Kateryna; his brothers and sisters in Ukraine. He is survived by his sister Maria Hovistchak in Bystritsia, Ukraine; his children, Teresa (Bill) Rumley, Susan (Ike) Wardekker and John (Carol) Pashko; grandchildren, Clayton (Dawna), Jamie, Thomas, Nicole and Janelle. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Misericordia Health Centre for their care and support. ALICE POIRIER (nee BLAIS) Peacefully on October 24, 2004, Alice passed away to join her husband Hector; her mom and dad; her sister Malvina; and her three brothers, Bernard, Joseph and Roland. She is survived by her sister Marguerite (Rene Berube); and sister-in-law Mavis Blais. She will be missed by her children, Roger, Jacqueline (Louis Corbeil), and Jean-Pierre; also her grandchildren, Marcel, Gilles (Audrey), Jean-Paul, Daniel, Alexis and Marc; two great-grandchildren, Damien and Arielle. HARVEY QUEAU 1921 - 2004 On Saturday, October 23, 2004 Harvey Queau, beloved husband of Christina Murray Queau, passed into the Lord's care. Harvey was born
April 29, 1921 to the late Charles and Katie Queau. He was raised in Fort Rouge and attended Riverview, Lord Roberts and Kelvin Schools. Harvey served five and a half years in the R.C.A.F. in Canada and overseas during the Second World War. After the war, he returned to the C.N.R. for the next 43 years, retiring in 1982 from the Symington Diesel Shop. After retirement Harvey and Christina enjoyed several trips to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii, also many trips to Britain, motoring to call on family and friends. Much loved, Harvey will be sadly missed and many will remember him for kindness and help quietly given. Harvey was a member of the Fort Rouge Legion for 55 years, and was a life member of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum at Brandon, and also a member of the CN Pensioners of Manitoba. Harvey is survived by his beloved wife Christina, cousins in Winnipeg, in England, Scotland and Australia and friends around the world. Thank you to Dr. R.W. Smith and Dr. M.A. Jason for their care of Harvey and to the staff who helped Harvey in Unit 3 North, Victoria Hospital. FLORENCE HELENA ROSLER (nee BRUNSKILL) February 7, 1917 - October 25, 2004 Florence passed away peacefully at the Grace General Hospital on Monday, October 25, 2004. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence; and her sisters, Dorothy and Violet. She is survived by her son Ron Rosler (Sandra); daughter Merrilynn (Dick) Scott; beloved grandson Ryan Rosler; brother Tom (Della) Brunskill; and Dave Mann. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Florence was born
and raised in Stockholm, SK. She met Clarence who was from Dubuc, SK and the Second World War took the couple to Hamilton, ON, where they were married
on September 6, 1941. Following the war, they moved to Winnipeg where they raised their family. On top of raising her family, Florence worked for the Hudson's Bay Company for a time. Florence was a longtime member of the St. James Legion, Branch No. 4. Florence will be remembered for her vibrant and fun loving nature. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge for the special care given to Florence during her stay there. ERNEST JOHN SMITH M.ARCH, FRAIC, RCA December 17, 1919 - October 22, 2004 Ernest passed away peacefully in The Pas, MB, with his family by his side while listening to his favourite music. Left to celebrate his life are his children, Lynda, Emily (Nick), Christopher (Connie); grandchildren, Steven and Jeffery; sister Vera; brother Robert; and many relatives. Born and educated in Winnipeg, he grew up on Aubrey Street. He attended the University of Manitoba where he attained his Bachelor's degree in Architecture and where he won the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal. He later received a scholarship to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston where he received his Masters Degree. Ernest enjoyed nature. He spent his summers on Lake Winnipeg, as a youth at Grand Beach and later with his family at their cottage at Hillside Beach. It was at Grand Beach where he met the love of his life ("on the boardwalk") - Marjorie his wife of 48 years. They were blessed with three children Lynda, Emily and Christopher. It was at the lake where he enjoyed fishing, boating and swimming, working on the cottage and most of all - entertaining family and friends. Later in life he enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and the summers at Hillside Beach where he designed and built his retirement home, which was featured at The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts "Prairie Region Exhibition" at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1997. He looked forward to getting away with the "boys" on their annual fishing trips to Pisces Island on Labyrinth Bay, Lake of the Woods. It is here where he could let his hair down, build "stuff", fish and explore the wilderness. This was truly a special part in his life. Ernest's passion was Architecture. While at the U. of M. he and his friends Dennis Carter and Walter Katelnikoff made a commitment to start an architectural practice in Winnipeg upon Ernest's graduation from MIT. In 1947, the firm that has sustained the name Smith Carter was established and became a prominent name in Architecture in Manitoba, across Canada and elsewhere. In the early years he taught design at the University while building the practice and "beating the bushes" throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario pursuing school, church and hospital projects. Ernest functioned as managing partner of Smith Carter until his retirement in 1985 after 38 years in practice. He was particularly proud of the influence the firm had on the skyline of Winnipeg and his accomplishments related to international work. Notable projects include the Pan-Am Swimming Pool, Centennial Centre (the Centennial Concert Hall, Planetarium, and Museum of Man and Nature), Lombard Place/Richardson Building, Bank of Nova Scotia and Concourse at Portage and Main, Place d'Accuiel Expo 67 in Montreal, the Canadian Chancery Building in Warsaw Poland, Kermanshah Technical Training Centre in Iran and the Canadian Embassy Building in Moscow. Over the years Ernest held numerous professional postings and honours. He always felt this was an important aspect of his life, not only to strengthen his career but also to advance the Architectural profession. Notable activities included: President of the Manitoba Association of Architects (1956-61) and Life Member (2000), Chairman of the National Joint Committee on Construction Materials (1963-65), Dean of the College of Fellows (1972-75) and Chancellor of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (1979). Ernest enjoyed and supported the arts. Over the years he was a member of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, co-chairman of the Fine Arts Committee for the Centennial Cultural Centre (1967) and participated in varying capacities on the board of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, including President from 1969-71. He was a member of Council of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1974) and later donated his time to fundraising pursuits for the RCA. He was particularly fond of playing the piano and upon retirement took lessons for many years to advance his playing skills. He remained a dedicated husband to his wife Marjorie and following her illness took on the responsibility for her day-to-day care. His efforts were tireless to ensure that the quality of her life was maintained until her death in 1993. He continued to live at Hillside Beach until 1998 when he moved to Winnipeg where he lived at The Wellington. In 2001, he moved to St. Paul's Personal Care home in The Pas where his son Chris resides with his family. A memorial service to celebrate Ernest's life will be held in Winnipeg at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Ave., 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 28. MARGARET STEVENS On October 23, 2004 at Riverview Health Centre, Margaret, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 74. Margaret is survived by her three sons, Len and Susan Stevens of Bragg Creek, AB, Don and Jo-Anne Stevens of Winnipeg and Darrell and Anna Stevens of Vancouver, BC; her two grandchildren, Chantelle and Jaxon Stevens; and her dear friend Pauline Couch. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sister Hope and Earl Gibbons as well as three nieces. Margaret was predeceased by her grandson Mitchell Stevens. Margaret was a dedicated mother and a strong influence on the lives of her three sons. She recently celebrated her 74th birthday. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace General Hospital Emergency/ICU departments and Riverview Health Centre for their compassion and care. MINH CAM TAO On Friday, October 22, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. Minh passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre, after a courageous battle with cancer, having been diagnosed over eight months ago. Minh was born
on June 24, 1951 in Vietnam with eight brothers and sisters. Immigrating to Canada on August 18, 1980, he worked hard to bring his whole family to live with him in Winnipeg, MB. Minh loved to contribute generosity any way he could from charity to giving rides for elderly people every Sunday to the Huasing Buddhist Temple for their services in the morning. His love for 'doing the right thing' was always equal to his love for chocolate, especially those Hershey Almonds. He volunteered many hours within the community, but always found time for his family. Leaving behind his beloved mother, wife, children, siblings, and friends, he will always be remembered in many people's hearts. We'd like to thank all those who contributed to Minh's peaceful passing, his ever-supporting family and friends. We'd also like to thank the tireless care from the staff and doctors of Riverview Health Centre for their spectacular job taking care of Minh in his last months. Funeral viewing/prayers will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 28 and Friday, October 29, 2004.
