HARRY PIDRUCHNY December 28, 1911- October 26, 2004 Peacefully, at his residence, at the golden age of 92 years, Harry Pidruchny of Winnipeg Beach, MB. Harry leaves to mourn his passing his daughter Margie Rigey of Dryden, ON; sons, Fred (Marg) of Gimli, MB and David (Donna) of Genelle, BC; grandchildren
, Richard (Maija), Bob (Josie) and Pat Rigey, Kevin and Craig Pidruchny, Kathie (Rick Ford) and Laura Pidruchny; great-grandchildren, Mailis, Matthew, Mark, Jason and Kelly Rigey, Justina Pidruchny and BJ and Brandon Ford.; brothers, Art (Florence) of Detroit, Michigan and Frank of Komarno, MB; along with several nieces and nephews. Harry was predeceased by his wife of 63 years Mary, in 1996; parents Nickola and Justina; mother and father-in-law Annie and Peter Boitson; son-in-law Peter Rigey and siblings, Annie, Wanda, John, Bill, Nick, Walter and Tom. He was born
and grew up on the farm in Komarno that was homesteaded by his grandparents. He and Mary were married
in 1932 in Pleasant Home and moved to Winnipeg Beach in 1934, where they built their life long home. Harry worked for Bill and Frank's Ice and Wood and then moved on to working for CPR Parks in Winnipeg Beach. He then went on to work for B&B (CPR) for 25 years as a carpenter at various locations in Manitoba. Upon retirement from CPR he worked locally doing renovations and plumbing jobs and in later years repaired lawnmowers and pressure pumps. He was quick to take on any challenging repair. Harry worked hard all his life and he was a kind and gentle man to his family. His great-granddaughter Justina was the brightest star in his life. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Gimli. Viewing will be held one hour prior to service time. Interment to follow in the Pleasant Home Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Harry's grandchildren, Richard and Bob Rigey, Kevin and Craig Pidruchny and his nephews, Charlie Zelenitsky and Brian Hoel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Healing Garden, Gimli Community Health Centre, Box 250, Gimli, MB ROC 1B0 or to the charity of one's choice. LEO ALEXANDER POPOW Peacefully on October 29, 2004, Leo passed away at the age of 90. Left to cherish his memory is his son George (Denise Doucette); grandsons, Nolan and Tibor; and son Victor (Shelly Cook). Leo was born
in the Ukraine on March 9, 1914. He travelled and worked extensively throughout the Middle East until he met and married
his wife. Together they moved to Winnipeg and there raised their two sons. Leo worked at his company, Pine Realty until his retirement. Leo enjoyed raising bees, making wine from his Nan King cherries, gardening, keeping up on and discussing world issues and of course, his family. ANTHONY (TONY) M.L. PRICE July 3, 1946 - October 21, 2004 "Success is doing what you love and loving what you do". It's written on one of his favourite mugs and he lived his life accordingly. He was born
in London, England, and his family settled in Calgary, AB when he was a boy. After high school he joined the RCMP and worked throughout the Okanagan until settling in Kelowna. It was there in 1970 that he met the love of his life, Susan Williams and announced to everyone that he would marry her. Soon followed their three children, Garreth, Jenny and Michael. In 1979, after leaving the force, the family moved to Winnipeg and when Tony turned 40 he decided to go back to school to "do what he loved" and became a professional chef. He worked throughout the city until the opportunity arose to work up north on the North Warning System which he had been doing for 15 years up to his cancer diagnoses in July 2003. In 1992, Tony and Susan moved back to the Okanagan where they made their home in Summerland. Every time Tony would fly home from work he would say to Susan, "Pinch me, I live in this beautiful place" as he awed at the beauty of the lakes, mountains, vineyards and orchards of his home. Tony loved the simple things in life, his yard that he worked so hard to make beautiful, his house, his wife and children, his cats, holidays at home, good wine, good food, music, the company of friends, the food network and the history channel. He read cookbooks like most people read novels and he had more facts stored in his brain than most of us would care to hear. He was "big tough Tony" on the outside but those who knew and loved him knew what a softy he really was. He truly loved his life and we loved him. LAVERNE GUSTAV RACH October 1, 1922 - October 27, 2004 Peacefully, after a long, courageous struggle, passed away on October 27, 2004 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Morden with family at his side. He resided most of his life on the family farm in the 1-6 District South of Morden. He married
the love of his life, Grace Klatt in 1948 and spent the best years of his life loving and caring for her. They moved to town in 1990. Laverne was predeceased by his loving wife Grace in 1991, his parents, brother Bernhard Rach and sister Hazel Bendinger. He is survived by his eight children and their families; Bernice and Doug Rinn of Rock Lake; Doug and Val Rach of Thompson; Marie and Ron Foidart of Winnipeg; Joyce and Ray Schaak of Winnipeg; Dennis and Cathy Rach of the 1-6 District; Cheryl and Gerald Nickel of Morden; Greg and Bev Rach of the 1-6 District; Brenda and Howard Pauls of Morden; 18 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his brother Glen Bendinger of Carman and sister Lynn and Wolfgang Hackenbroch of Winnipeg and family. By Laverne's wishes, a private family memorial will be held. There will be a celebration of life at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, 1050 Thornhill Street, Morden on Monday, November 1, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a Charity of One's Choice. PETER RUDYK With sadness, the family announces that on October 23, 2004, at the age of 88, Peter Rudyk passed away at St. Boniface Hospital. He was a devoted and loving husband to Michalina "Lee" during their 59 years of marriage. He was a dedicated father to Barbara and (Marlene) Gregory, and an adoring grandfather to Claire. He was predeceased by his beloved Lee in April 2004; his parents, Mykyta and Ksenia Rudyk; and by his three brothers, John, Paul, and Steve. Peter was born
and educated in East Kildonan. In 1943, he entered the employ of the Winnipeg Electric Co., which eventually became Centra Gas. He began as a general labourer, rising to the position of weigh master in the coke yard. After the change to natural gas, he became a serviceman, and finally a dispatcher, retiring in 1981. After Peter married
Lee in 1944, he built a home on Kimberly Avenue where they resided for 34 years, and in 1986, they moved to St. Vital. Peter enjoyed bowling for over 40 years, being a founding member of the Twilight Bowling League, where he served as President for 19 years, and, more recently, being a member of the St. Vital Roundenders, winning the National Seniors Championship in 1993. He enjoyed curling at Rossmere and later at the Heather, and loved golf with his buddies. He had a commitment to labour issues as expressed by his longtime involvement as secretary of the O.C.A.W. Union, and support of the NDP Party. He volunteered in many ways ranging from Folklorama to Cancercare. He was a past member of the Manitoba Society of Seniors, and a member of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians Senior Citizens Club. Peter found joy in life's simple pleasures, a freshly mowed lawn, a game of cards, a Kelekis hot dog, a good cigar, a lively polka, an outrageous joke. He was devoted to Lee, enjoying memorable travels, hosting family gatherings, searching for the ideal blueberry patch, or taking a stroll. As her health declined, he continued to look after her until her passing. Also he was devoted to his family, delighting in every graduation, recital, science fair, and sporting event. He cherished his friends, many who endured his most unusual nicknames. And he had a special place in his heart for his granddaughter, upon whom he lavished his time, energy, and affection. FRIEDA (WETTSTEIN) SCHLEGEL Peacefully, on Thursday, October 28, 2004 at the age of 76, Frieda passed away at home, surrounded by her family, after a lengthy illness. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by daughters, Helga Nikkel, Elfie Harvey (Alan); sons, John Wettstein (Monika), Carl Wettstein (Sherry); grandchildren, Steve and Tim Nikkel, Marissa and Taran Harvey, Chris Wettstein (Nancy), Danelle and Laura Wettstein; two brothers and five sisters. She is also survived by her second husband Harry Schlegel and his family. Her first husband Christian Wettstein predeceased her on October 26, 1980. The family wishes to thank Dr. T. Babick, and also the Palliative Care Team for their excellent care and compassion. Special thanks to our Aunt Alma for her loving care of our mother throughout her illness. HARRY SILVERMAN On October 24, 2004, Harry Silverman passed away suddenly at his home. He was 86. Harry is survived by his wife of 58 years Maussie; his sons Burle (Vivian), Richard (Jo) and Neil (Shirley); and his grandsons Jeff and Josh. He is also survived by his older brother Syd of London, ON and his little sister Jeannie of Everett, Washington as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. Harry was born
in Canora, SK and raised in Selkirk, MB. He entered the Air Force and trained as an aircraft electrician in The Second World War. After an honourable discharge, Harry became an electrician and subsequently became involved in electrical sales. Harry was a longtime member of The General Monash Legion. After retirement, Harry enjoyed his family and travelling. He was a kind man. His family and friends will miss him greatly. Services were held at The Chesed Shel Emes on October 26. Interment followed at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.

ROBERTA DOROTHY SIMPKIN Roberta passed away October 26, 2004 at the Manitoba Developmental Centre at the age of 64 years. Funeral service will be held in the Aspen Centre of the Manitoba Developmental Centre on Tuesday, November 2 at 1:30 p.m. with Chaplain Ron Siemens officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. She was predeceased by her mother in 1969 and her father in 1984, as well as by six brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her sister Ruth Reid and family of Winnipeg and a brother Fred Simpkin and family of Colonsay, SK. Roberta was admitted to MDC on March 30, 1970. She resided on Morningside and Towerby before coming to live on Westview in June 2000. Roberta had a loving nature and she will be missed by all of her friends and family. JOHN MARTIN SMITH Peacefully on October 26, 2004 John Martin Smith passed away at the Grace General Hospital at the age of 83 years. John will be loving remembered by his beloved wife Mabel; daughter Rosemary (Doug) Lepine; brother Tom (Julia) of Kelowna and brother-in-law Bud Harlow; nieces, Valerie (Wayne) and Alexis Dalzell of Vancouver and Mary-Anne and Tianna Smith of Kelowna, Wendy (Greg) Carrigan and Marie Basaraba of White Rock, BC; nephews, Robert (Lorette), Allan (Kira) and Jim (Arlene) Harlow. He was predeceased by his father Robert Smith and mother Mary Smith (nee Martin). John served overseas during the Second World War and latterly with the Winnipeg Fire Department for 35 years. NICHOLAS STRASHOK Peacefully, on October 28, 2004, at 89 years of age, after a brief battle with cancer, our father passed away at the Vita Hospital. He is survived by his son Jim of Airdrie, AB; daughter Patricia (Dennis) Tole of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Amber and Adam Tole and Jamie Strashok, all of Winnipeg; sister Peggy Kuey of Lamont, AB; and brother Philip (Anne) of Edmonton; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Lillian in 1968 and by five brothers and four sisters. Nick was born
on December 16, 1914 in St. Michael, AB. He graduated from Alberta College in 1935 and was employed by National Fruit Co. until 1941 when he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. He served in Canada and was honourably discharged as a corporal in March, 1946. He returned to Edmonton and his position as Chief Accountant at the Scott-National Fruit Co. until 1949. At that time, he graduated as an accredited public accountant and moved to Winnipeg in 1950, to open his own accounting firm, N. Strashok & Co., which he operated until his retirement in 1980. During this time, he served on various boards and committees in the business and church communities. In 1976, he purchased a farm in Tolstoi, MB and enjoyed the next 20 years getting back to his roots. In 1996 he moved to the town of Vita, MB where he spent his remaining years, very independent and still driving to the Can-Am Cafe to meet his friends for coffee and conversation. Our family would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff of Vita Hospital for their kindness and wonderful care of our father for the past three months. Nick's funeral service will be held at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Tolstoi, on Monday, November 1 at 10:00 a.m. with interment in the Independent Cemetery Overstoneville, MB. STEVE SYMBOL After a lengthy illness as a result of emphysema on Friday, October 29, 2004 at the Beausejour, Hospital, Beausejour, Manitoba Steve Symbol aged 80 years, beloved husband of the late Irene Symbol of Ostenfeld, Manitoba passed away. He is survived by his children, Mark (Julie), Dale Werry (Robert); and his grandchildren, Jodi, Nicholas, Brent (Colette), Brad (Sharese), Scott (Angela); and Sonya as well as great-grandchildren Nicholas, Serena, Ariana and Hailey. Steve also leaves his sister Tina Steinke. Steve was predeceased by his parents, wife Irene in 1996. Steve along with his son and grandson worked the family farm and it was his legacy to them. He loved his family and always made time for his grandchildren and great grandchildren, they were a source of pride for him. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of his life will be held on Monday, November 1, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. from the Ostenfeld Lutheran Church, Ostenfeld, Manitoba with Rev. Paul Gehrs officiating. ROBERT CHARLES TAYLOR November 9, 1946 - October 28, 2004 Peacefully on October 28, 2004 after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Robert passed on with his loving family and friends at his side. Robert's memory is cherished by his beloved Hildi; his precious girls, Jennifer (David), Megan (Andrew), Allison (Andre); the sunshine of his life, his granddaughter Sierra; his brother Doug (Irene); all of his extended family and friends, and his faithful side-kick, his dog Kodi. He was predeceased by his mother, father and mother-in-law. Robert was born
and raised in Winnipeg, graduated from Gordon Bell, then obtainted his B.A. and later his B.Ed. Degrees from the University of Manitoba. He taught in Gilbert Plains for three years then returned to Winnipeg and joined the History Department at Dakota Collegiate where he spent 35 years influencing many, many lives, personally and educationally. Robert took teaching very seriously and his students meant everything to him. He received many awards for his accomplishments throughout his career. He enjoyed his time at the farm and the lake (basking in the sun with a Corona), his weekend "swap-shop" visits, his jazz and Turner Classic movies. The family would like to thank the Oncology and D-6 staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion during his illness. Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Research Department. Funeral service will be held Monday, November 1 at First Mennonite Church, Notre Dame and Alverstone at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ses ami.e.s et collaborateurs ont fait leurs adieux a Alice lors des funerailles qui ont eu lieu en Nairobi le 29 octobre 2004. February 24, 1925. He worked at Winnipeg Typewriters until his retirement. He was an avid musician and enjoyed computer simulated flying in his later years. He was predeceased by his mother and father; brother Elmer; and sisters, Irene and Florence. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Diane; his friend Anne and her son Dale. LORRAINE ELEANOR WARNOCK (nee ALEXANDER) June 9, 1920 - October 19, 2004 Our sweet Lorraine passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, after only two months of being diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. She leaves behind her son Lawrence (Laurie Muzik) of Winnipeg, MB, daughter Lynn (Michael) Holloway of Parksville, BC and grandson Ryan of Vancouver, BC. As well, her sisters, Pat Middlemass of Neepawa, MB and Trudy Alexander of Winnipeg; brothers, Jerry (Mary) Alexander of Rossburn, MB and Elwood Alexander of Stoney Mountain, MB. Lorraine was predeceased by her husband Lloyd in March, 1992. Lorraine's life was all about giving whether it was to her family, friends, or someone she'd never met before. Her gifts of friendship, service, and kindness will be missed and remembered forever by all those who knew her. A celebration of life will be held on November 6 in Vancouver.
