SAM DOLOVICH

November 07, 2004

SAM DOLOVICH 1929 - 2004 In the warmth and comfort of his home Sam Dolovich passed away peacefully on October 30, 2004 after a lifetime distinguished by great courage, strength, grace, humour and humility. Sam was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Rachel Dolovich; and by his brother Dr. Jerry Dolovich (Myrna). He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 52 years, Tania. He will be deeply missed by his four sons, Michael, Allan, Jeffrey and Gary; and by his four daughters-in-law, Pat, Kayla, Laurie and Dalit. He also leaves behind many adoring grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members. Sam was born icon on March 23, 1929. All of Sam's schooling took place in Winnipeg and he graduated from St. John's High School in Winnipeg's North End. He chose a career in pharmacy and graduated from the University of Manitoba's School of Pharmacy in 1956. He served his profession well and what distinguished him was the sincere care he demonstrated for each of the patients he served during his working years. Sam met his bride-to-be, Tania Fridell, while he was a pharmacist's apprentice. They married icon in 1952 and so began a 52 year relationship that is a model for us all of how husband and wife express love for one another in times of both joy and tragedy. They built a home founded on love, joy, laughter, and respect for one another. These values they taught to their children not so much by lecture but through living example. In 1976 Sam suffered a debilitating stroke. With Tania by his side day and night Sam fought his way out of the abyss and returned home after more than a year in hospital. His resolve continued on throughout the remainder of his life even when he was hit in 1994 at a much more advanced age by cancer that plagued him until the end. He combatted that disease with the same strength and determination he showed when confronting each of life's great challenges. Although Sam was now limited physically, he carved out a life for himself within the parametres set by fate. What is perhaps most remarkable is that he faced these difficult challenges without an ounce of bitterness or self-pity. Prior to taking ill Sam was an avid sportsman enjoying golf in the summer and curling and hockey in the winter. He was also an excellent baseball player, an all-star catcher. He also had a deep appreciation for music, an appreciation that he passed on to his children and their children. After taking ill, Sam enjoyed taking long walks in his electric wheelchair, both in Winnipeg and in Gimli and he could often be seen with one or two extra grateful passengers at a time, his grandchildren. Special gratitude must be expressed to Miriam Jaeger. Although throughout the years she has always been such an important and beloved member of the family, it is nearly impossible to overstate how much she helped both Sam and Tania during his final illness. Simply put, she helped lessen both their pain. The family would also like to express its gratitude to Dr. Carey Isaac and the nursing and support staff at Concordia General Hospital's N1 South. Interment took place on November 1 at the Sha'arey Zedek Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Jerry Fridell, Frank Jaeger (honorary), Bruce Jaeger, Joey Pollock, Steven Ratson, Joel Morris and Stephen Field. Rabbi P. Weizman presided over the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

INEZ HOLTMAN

November 07, 2004

INEZ HOLTMAN (nee DAWSON) Inez Holtman, (nee Dawson) passed away on October 28, 2004 surrounded by her devoted family. She was the cherished wife of sixty years to Harold and loving mother to Judy (Bill), Gayle (Brent), Janice (Brian), Larry, Jack, and Cath (Dave). She was the beloved Granny to 13 grandchildren: Erin, Stephanie, Matthew, Susan, Sara, Adam, Nolan, Mairin, Justin, Janice, Tanner, Emily, and Stephanie and the great-grandmother of Isabella, Tai, Francesca, Charlie, Madison, Koa, Luke, Leo, Morgan, Olive Inez, and Jinnaya. She is also survived by her brother, Allen Dawson (Gloria) of Chilliwack and sister, Edna Robertson of Winnipeg and her many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the special care and many trips Auntie Edna made to Vancouver to support Mum through this past year. Born in Edmonton in 1923, Inez grew up in Manitoba, attended Gordon Bell High School, and met Harold at the Winnipeg Roller Rink. They married icon in 1944 and raised six children. Their devotion to one another has always been an example to all of us. She was a talented seamstress and knitter and designed special outfits for her family from baby layettes and toddler clothes, to grad dresses and wedding trousseaux. Before retiring to Vancouver in 1982, Inez was a supervisor at Revenue Canada's Winnipeg office. In retirement she enjoyed her grandchildren, golf, and especially travelling with Harold to the many places in the world her children called home at one time or another. Together they have ridden elephants in Thailand, seen the sun set on Ayres Rock, downed raw herring and onion in The Hague, celebrated New Year's Eve on the Copa Cabana, and played in the surf in Kauai. At home Inez enjoyed organizing our Easter loonie hunts with all the clues written in verse. She and Harold had a great circle of friends at Panorama Terrace in Abbotsford where she contributed to their social events, coffee parties, exercise classes, and casino outings. Inez was also a member and KOP at the Abbotsford chapter of TOPS, enjoying their meetings and excursions throughout the province, and championing every success of her friends there. These last years Mum has faced a special challenge because of Dad's Alzheimer's disease. She rose to this with reserves of strength, humour, love and grace that preserved Dad's dignity and inspired the rest of the family. The family would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Caroline Van Schagen, the palliative nurse Elaine, and the directors and caregivers at the Residences at Langley Gardens (Empress Floor) for their compassionate care of our mother and kind support to the family during this time. We will miss our mother's lovely smile and the wonderful appreciation and respect she had for every child's point of view. At her request, there will be no service. Donations can be made to a children's charity of choice.
