Sandra Lynne Moffat

It is with deepest sorrow the family announces the passing of Sandra Lynne Moffat at the age of 52 years. Surrounded by her loving family, Sandy passed away on Sunday, March 07, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Predeceased by her mother Rose, Sandy leaves to cherish her memory her father Elmer Moffat of Portage la Prairie; children Kristin (Randy) Zasitko of Winnipeg, Brian (Dawn) Kowerchuk of Portage and Darren Kowerchuk of Portage; grandchildren Justin Zasitko, Trinidee and Hudson Kowerchuk and soon-to-be baby granddaughter Zasitko; Auntie Anne (Frank) Larsh of Kelowna BC; Uncle Ray Moffat of Portage; cousins and many, many special friends. Born on St. Patrick’s Day 1951, Sandy soon became known as “Patty” to her closest family members, an endearing name she retained throughout her life. Sandy was employed at the Portage Daily Graphic for the past 4 years where she very much enjoyed her work and was thankful for the many wonderful friendships made. A soft spoken and caring person, Sandy always found the time to offer a good hearted hello to all she encountered. Regardless of her own situation, she was far more concerned with how others were doing, ensuring you passed along a greeting on her behalf. Sandy always placed her hardships and problems aside, putting her family’s needs and wants ahead of her own. Whether the pleasure of a short visit with her beloved children or opportunity to further “spoil” her cherished grandchildren, Sandy perceived a positive from the smallest things in life, enjoying experiences to the ultimate. It is her kind smile, gentle demeanor and love for all living things (as the stray cats of Portage well know…) that set Sandy apart and will forever remain in our hearts and souls. Dear Lord, Put your arms around her, Hold her in your tender care. Make up to her for all she suffered, And all she had to bear. She went through so much in silence, Her spirits did not bend. She faced her pain with courage, Until the very end. It broke our hearts to lose her, But she didn’t go alone, For part of us went with her, The day God called her home. Amen. The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Portage District General Hospital Medical Ward. The comfort and compassion you provided to Sandy and to us all cannot be adequately expressed in words. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening, March 9, 2004 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Road S. In keeping with Sandra’s wishes there will be a private funeral. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Sandy’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8 or to Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Sandy by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.

Frances Isabel Young (nee McDermott)

She is survived by her loving daughters Anne Teghtmeyer and Wilma Shirriff, and son-in-law Bill Shirriff, all of Portage. She was proud of her grandchildren, Bill Teghtmeyer of Portage, Nancy Teghtmeyer of Calgary, Ken Shirriff (Kathryn) of Redwood City, California, and Anita Borger (Henry) of Winnipeg. Frances took delight in her great-granddaughters, Emma and Lillian Borger, and Sydney Shirriff. In-laws Vira Muir and Murray Young also survive her. Frances enjoyed keeping in touch with her extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. Frances was born icon on September 25, 1907, at the Edwin area family farm. Frances did private duty, and then spent a year as a hospital nurse in Montreal while living with an aunt and uncle. In 1934 she returned to Manitoba to marry Gard Young who farmed at High Bluff. Farm life during the Thirties was not easy, but Frances used her work ethic and nursing skills to serve family, church, and community. From playing the piano for Cochrane School Christmas concerts to being Superintendent of the High Bluff United Church Sunday School, she volunteered her time willingly. During the early years of Anne’s rheumatoid arthritis, Frances’ faith and her determination that Anne would be able to walk, were instrumental in Anne’s achieving this goal by the age of twelve. In 1950 the family moved to Portage la Prairie and Gard and Frances continued to farm from town. With seemingly endless energy, through the years Frances served as president of the Portage Presbyterial, Unit A of the Trinity UCW, Central Plains MS Society, the Portage Registered Nurses, Portage Nurses Alumnae, and the Women’s Arts Club. She taught St. John Ambulance classes, volunteered as a nurse at Red Cross blood donor clinics, and helped with other organizations including the Cancer Society. She was a member and trustee of Trinity United Church. Frances enjoyed music, poetry, reading, entertaining, and traveling. Above all, she was devoted to her family, both immediate and extended. Her relatives and many friends will remember her keen wit and sense of humour. She took pride in her Irish heritage and friends from her apartment days recall her shenanigans on March 17. After she moved to the Manor in 2000, she appreciated all that was done by the dedicated staff to make her life pleasant and comfortable. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, memorial donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Central Plains Chapter, 302 Saskatchewan Ave. E. Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8 or the Lions Prairie Manor Chapel Fund, 24 9th Street SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3V4 , or Trinity United Church, 15 Tupper Street S., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1W7 would be gratefully appreciated.
