Evelyn Pearl Skea
September 19 , 1919 - March 22 , 2008
Birthpace: Crescent Lake District, SK
Residence: Yorkton, SK
Mrs. Evelyn Pearl Skea of Yorkton, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 88 years. Evelyn was born on September 19, 1919 on the homestead in the Crescent Lake District just south of Yorkton. She was one of five children born to George and Albertina Cross. As a young woman she worked as a ward aide at the Yorkton Queen Victoria Hospital. She was united in marriage to Atholl Ronald Skea on July 3, 1944 at St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton. They lived in Saskatoon for two years while Atholl attended University. In 1947, they moved back to the Skea family farm in the Beaverdale District west of Springside. They moved to Springside in 1952 and purchased a general store there in 1960. They retired in 1983 and moved back to the farm where their hearts had always been. After Atholl died in 1996, Evelyn moved to Yorkton where she resided until her passing. Evelyn was always very active in community affairs throughout her life. She has been a member of the United Churches in Springside, Theodore, and St. Andrew’s in Yorkton. For many years she sang in the choir and she was always busy with U.C.W. activities. Evelyn was a 4-H leader for over 20 years. In later years, she was an active member of the Threshermans Club where she was known as the bread maker and was often in charge of “Grandma’s Oven” at the annual show. She always enjoyed the fellowship at Senior Citizen Clubs. In Yorkton, Evelyn enjoyed volunteering at the Soup Kitchen, the Kitchen Band, and the Gift Shop at the Hospital. Mom was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was an expert gardener, seamstress, knitter and cook and passed along these talents to her family. She led by example; gentle encouragement most of the time but with a firm hand when necessary. Mom nurtured in us the desire to pursue education, music, art, dance, sports, and community involvement. Mom “Tootsie” had a special bond with her brother Tracy. Especially in recent years, the support, friendship, and aid that Tracy and his wife Eve gave Mom enabled her to maintain the independence she so fiercely wanted. Friends were very important to Mom. She never had much use for idle time, no lounging around reading books or watching soaps, but she always loved a game of cards with friends or family. You wanted Mom on your team; she was a clever player with a smart memory. She loved nothing better than to trap you and lay down a winner. Great food and hospitality were also important to her. She loved planning, preparing, and presenting a meal to whoever was there for a visit. A highlight on her social calender was the ladies potluck group - food, fun, and fellowship! She was also instrumental in preparing meals for larger groups of people- catering banquets, fall suppers and luncheons. Everyone in the family has at least one recipe for a favorite food that “Grandma” made. Evelyn was predeceased by husband, Atholl; mother, Tina; father, George; an infant brother, Frank; sister, Enid; brother, George. Evelyn will be lovingly remembered and missed always by her family: son, Harvey (Carole) Skea of Wakaw; daughter, Bonnie (Harry) Huebner of Regina; daughter, Judy (Allen) Frederickson of Theodore; son, Ken (Dori) Skea of Calgary; daughter, Heather (David) Lindenas of Prince Albert. Fifteen grandchildren: Warren (Sharon) Skea; Leandra (Wade) Swales; Christa (Steven) Kerr; David (Kayla) Huebner; Laura Huebner; Melinda (Derek) Smith; Shannon (Devin) Blum; Jill (Ken) Hintze; Blake (Nicole) Frederickson; Yarina Tarasenko; Ryan, Kyle, and Patrick Skea; Meagan and Kelsea Lindenas. Ten great grandchildren: Taryn and Shelby Skea; Emma and Ethan Kerr; Taleah, Kiara, Brooklyn and Madison Smith; Athan and Ellison Swales. Evelyn is also survived by her younger brother, Tracy (Eve) Cross; brother-in-law, Dan (Frances) Skea, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, friends and neighbours. Mom was the best. She was a pillar of our family and community. “We miss you, we love you, thanks for all the memories.” Funeral Services were held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 from St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton, Saskatchewan with Reverend Faye Greer officiating.
