FOSTER Mrs. Hazel Irene
FOSTER Mrs. Hazel Irene, of Swift Current and formerly of Bracken passed away at the Swift Current Regional Hospital on August 16, 2003 at the age of 75 years. Hazel leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Douglas; three daughters: Elva (Bruce) McInnes, of Swift Current, and their family, Jodie (Bob) Thompson and Donald, of Houston, Texas, Trudy (Steve Gusikoski) McInnes, of Calgary, and Kimberly (Travis) Dyck and Jace of Calgary. Nordeen (Glen) Urquhart and their family, Jill and Andrew of Regina, and Patty (Rick McAlpine) George of Waldeck, and their family, Chris Johnson of Carrot River, SK, Brent Johnson of Waterloo, Ont., Jason Arnold of Waterloo, Ont., Charlotte Bosse’ of Swift Current, and Jolene George of Waldeck. One sister, Iona Francis of Medicine Hat, and two brothers, John (Kay) Steele of Salmon Arm, BC, and Ken (Grace) Steele of Tisdale, SK, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, David and Hazel Steele; one sister, Elva; two brothers, Joe and Elvin; and one nephew, Dale Blackstock. Hazel was born on June 21, 1928, the youngest in a family of seven, in Shaunavon, SK. Hazel graduated from Grade 12 in Shaunavon and went on to Normal School to become a teacher. She taught in the Canuck – Bracken District where she met Doug, her husband of 52 years. They made their home on the family farm outside of Bracken and there raised their three daughters. In 1979 they bought a new house in Swift Current and continued farming, from Swift Current, until 1992. The Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from Parkside Memorial Funeral Chapel with Reverend John Barker officiating. The organist was Arlene Olson and special music was provided by Verna Howlett and Karen Mitchell. The interment
was held at Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The United Church Ladies provided a lunch. In memory of Hazel Foster, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and would be appreciated by the family. UNGER Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty)
UNGER Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty), passed away on September 9, 2003 at the Herbert Nursing Home at the age of 88. She was born on December 17, 1914 to Abram and Maria Wiebe in the Ufa Region of Russia. Elizabeth and her family left Russia for Canada in 1925, moving to a farm at Colonsay, Saskatchewan where she got her education to Grade 6. The family moved to several locations in Saskatchewan and eventually to Ontario. However Elizabeth stayed and worked in Saskatoon where she met and married David Unger on January 14, 1945. They farmed at Moose Range where Mary was born. In the spring of 1946 they moved to a farm at Lobethal where the twins, John and Ruth, were born. David and Daniel were also born there. In 1953 they moved off the farm into Main Centre where they lived until 1984 when they moved to Herbert. Timothy and Paul were born at Main Centre. Elizabeth worked hard to provide for her family, having a big garden and a few chickens. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and loved them regardless of abilities. Mary and Ruth became teachers like her brother, Bill. A genetic mental handicap affected all three sons. When the Saskatchewan Association for Retarded Children, now known as Association for Community Living, was established in Herbert, Elizabeth worked hard to start a special class for the mentally handicapped in Herbert with Mrs. Norma McWilliam as the teacher. When David and Daniel became too old for the class they were transported to Swift Current to work at the Southwest Abilities Centre where they are still employed. Since 2000 they have been living in a privately approved home with Ernie and Elizabeth Jansen in Swift Current. Paul had additional health problems and in 1974 he became a resident of Valleyview Centre in Moose Jaw, which is still his home. Elizabeth enjoyed reading, doing word puzzles and crocheting, making many pairs of potholders. Elizabeth’s health was not always strong, especially having problems with her heart. In 1999 after several times in the hospital, it became obvious that she could not carry the entire household workload. David started to do most of the cooking and Home Care came in to help with the laundry, cleaning and personal care. In January of 2003 she moved into the Herbert Nursing Home. On September 9, after a brief illness, Elizabeth, very peacefully went to be with her Lord and Saviour. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, September 13, 2003 at the Herbert M.B. Church with Pastor Bob Cappelle officiating. The organist was Maryann Voth and the pianist was Elsie Peterson. The ushers were, Ed Andres and Greg Siemens. The pallbearers were grandchildren: Calvin and Dorry Mielke, Wendy Mielke, Friends: Don Voth, Walter Martens, Gerald Schroeder. The interment was held at the Herbert Cemetery, Herbert, Saskatchewan. Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 58 years, David Unger; daughter, Mary (Fred) Mielke, grandchildren, Calvin (Dorry) Mielke, Wendy Mielke; daughter, Ruth (Gordon) Unruh; sons: David, Daniel, and Paul Unger; brothers, Bill (Louise) Wiebe, John (Elsie) Wiebe; sisters, Mary Gerbrandt, Sue Hardy; sisters-in-law, Eva Wiebe and Dawn Wiebe. She was predeceased by her parents, Abram and Maria Wiebe; infant sons, Johnny and Timothy; sister, Helen Lenzmann; brothers, George and Henry Wiebe; brothers-in-law: Leo Gretzinger, Bill Hardy, Barney Gerbrandt and William Lenzmann. Memorial donations in memory of Elizabeth Unger may be made to the Association for Community Living. HERRIOT Mr. Charles Robert
HERRIOT Mr. Charles Robert, aged 85 years of Cabri/Lancer, Saskatchewan passed away on Monday, October 6, 2003 at the Cabri Prairie Health Care Centre. The funeral service was held on Friday, October 10, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. from Cabri Roman Catholic Church with Father Stephen Bill and Father David Polzen officiating. Special music was provided by Dave and Leone Hagel. The organist was Richelle Andreas-Titemore and the bugler was Bert Culham. The ushers were, Stan Bradford and Ralph Bradford. The pallbearers were: Blair Anderson, Brent Bradford, Kelly Bradford, Lloyd Hartman, Ryan Nobbs and Ross Forster. Honorary pallbearers were all of his family and friends. The interment was held at Lancer Cemetery, Lancer, Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Cabri Hospital Auxiliary or the Graveyard Maintenance Fund in Lancer. Charles is survived by his sister, Patricia Aisman; nephews, Gordon Aisman and James MacIntyre; niece, Patricia May; brother-in-law, Frank Widdifield; as well as many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Elizabeth Herriot; sisters, Marie and Gertrude and Julia in infancy. Charlie was born and raised on his father’s farm northeast of Lancer. He spent most of his 85 years there. Charlie enlisted in the service – in the Air Force no less and spent sometime as a P.O.W. after his plane was shot down. He came back to the farm after the war, and from then on was a farmer. Charlie was a man of the land. Farming isn’t an easy life, but he accepted that. And being a man of the land goes beyond crops and grain prices; it means being able to see the things we exist with. Bird songs, the way clouds form and what does it mean, animal tracks, nature on it’s own terms. He once pointed out a raccoon track in the mud to me, I had never seen a real raccoon in the wild before so the tracks alone were thrilling enough; somehow I think Charlie knew that they would be. He loved to go out to the East Sandhills and hunt geese, usually with Herman Dencker. Most days they’d be the first ones out there, and you’d find one or the other in the bush near the “old post”, waiting for the geese. Charlie got his share, but just being out there would have been enough. Charlie made every moment count, however that’s not to say he was always on the go - quite the contrary. For him there was always time. Time to put the crop in, time to take it off, time to fix something, time to answer a child’s questions, time to paint, and time to look at what he created. He was able to master time before it mastered him. Charlie was good at living life. He loved to paint and he enjoyed going to the rink to watch hockey. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He’d come to church and bring his mother. He enjoyed “coffee row” and would often stop in to visit friends for some reason or another. He and his brother-in-law, Frank, would go on road trips and end up on a “short-cut” where there wasn’t any road. He loved to read and tend his garden and yard. We’re going to miss Charlie. The smell of his pipe; the over-ripe corn; the pumpkins “for the kids”. We’ll always remember the instant Polaroid photos he’d take at Halloween and the inevitable orange and black wrapped, too hard but last forever toffees. We’ll miss his stories, his ever-present humor, and his distinctive chuckle. Charlie, we will remember you in those wispy clouds that mean only wind, in your paintings, and in the muddy tracks of critters of all sorts. God rest you Charlie . . . . . you’ve earned it. Helena “Evelyn” ST. LAURENT (nee Christianson)
Helena “Evelyn” ST. LAURENT (nee Christianson) loving wife of Roger, passed away on Thanksgiving Day at the Rocky View Hospital in Calgary, AB. Evelyn was born and raised in the Virgland area, south of Pennant, SK. After the loss of her sister, Clara, and the recent loss of her brother, Erling, she has finally received her long time wish to return home and now is at peace and without pain. Evelyn was born to Ludwig and Emma Christianson on December 26, 1921 and attended Virgland School along with her sister, Clara and her brother, Erling. She loved to play ball and excelled at track & field. On the farm she had a love of animals, especially horses and riding. Surrounded by a farming neighborhood of many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends, many happy times were spent through the years of hard times, hard work and family illness. When living in Swift Current she was employed at the Healy Booker Block, Coopers Store, Donnelly Law Firm and Irwin Medical Clinic. She attended Business College in Medicine Hat and from there she and her friend, Pearl Collins, ventured to Calgary where she was employed by Greyhound Canada and then a legal secretary at Snider Law Firm. She met and married husband, Roger, and they resided in Calgary until her passing. She loved the outdoors and to travel. Many trips were taken to the mountains, across Canada and State side. Knitting and crocheting was a favorite pastime – we all enjoyed the sweaters, afghans and doilies, auntie Evelyn made. Roger, nieces and nephews will miss her sadly, but are left with happy memories of visits, trips together, and especially Christmas, where good food, good laughs and happy times were spent together. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, Ludwig and Emma; her sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Phil; her brother and sister-in-law, Erling and Grace; her nephew, Harry. She leaves behind husband, Roger; nieces, Donna and Judy; nephews, Gregory, Norman and Arthur; all of their families; also numerous St. Laurent family members. She will be missed by friends in Calgary, her dear friends and neighbors, Muriel and Sophia, who have been so kind and helpful. Uncle Roger, we the family thank you for the devoted and wonderful care you gave Evelyn; she loved you very much. The funeral service was held on Saturday. October 18, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from Parkside Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Terry Simonson officiating. The organist was Arlene Olson. The pallbearers were nieces and nephews: Arthur Christianson, Stacey Christianson, Norman Christianson, Donna Strohan, Sarah Strohan and Nicole Strohan. STEINKE – Margaret
STEINKE – Margaret, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2003 at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. She was born on June 30, 1912. Predeceased by husband, Otto in 1999 and baby daughter, Adele; father, Andrew; mother, Maria Hagstrom; brothers, Ken, Carl, Gilbert; sister, Grace and grandson, Shawn Hagstrom. Margaret leaves to mourn her daughters; Joyce (Barry) Connatty, Ruby (Don) Reineke; sons, Grant (Evelyn) Steinke and Sheldon (Elaine) Steinke; grandchildren, Tracey, Bradley (Jackie), Trent, Adelle, Philip, Lance and Natasha (Justin); great-grandchildren, Neil, Taryn and Alec. Margaret was born in Devils Lake, North Dakota and came to Canada at the age of 2 years. She resided in Bateman, SK on the Hagstrom farm. In her late teens she worked in housekeeping for several pioneers families in the Shamrock area. She married Otto Steinke on October 5, 1938. They lived on a farm at Kelstern, SK until 1968 when they moved into Swift Current, SK. She moved to Lethbridge, AB in May, 2001 where she lived at the Pemmican Lodge. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. from the First United Church with Doris Watt officiating. The pallbearers were grandchildren; Bradley Connatty, Tracey Connatty, Trent Reineke, Philip Steinke, Lance Steinke, Adelle Steinke and Natasha Nelson. The ushers were Jim Bateman and Clifford Amendt. The interment took place at Elim Cemetery, Kelstern, SK. FROESE Mrs. Helena
FROESE Mrs. Helena, aged 83 years of the Palliser Regional Care Centre of Swift Current, passed away on October 21, 2003. Helena was born to Bernard and Susanna Penner on July 7, 1920. She grew up in Rosenort, Saskatchewan. She attended Iris School in the Rosenort district. She married George Froese on October 7, 1956. They were blessed with one son, Henry, daughter-in-law, Denise, and two grandchildren, Heather and Trevor. Helena loved and enjoyed her two grandchildren. She spent many happy hours playing and teaching them many things. She also spent many hours babysitting and playing with her numerous nieces and nephews. Helena enjoyed crocheting and sewing. She loved gardening. She and George spent many hours in their garden. She grew some of the largest and best-looking tomatoes around. She was a homemaker who took great pride in her home and family. She is survived by her son, Henry, daughter-in-law, Denise; two grandchildren, Heather and Trevor; two sisters, Kay (John) Giesbrecht of Swift Current, Ann (John) Klassen of Vanderhoof, British Columbia; one brother, Corny Penner of Swift Current. She was predeceased by her husband, George; her parents; three sisters; and five brothers. She lived in the Palliser Regional Care Centre for the past five years. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but she was ready and waiting to go and be with the Lord. The funeral service was held on Friday, October 24, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from Parkside Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Rick Williams officiating. The organist was Delores Falk and special music was provided by a Ladies Trio consisting of, Margaret Dyck, Agnes Wiebe and Tina Friesen. The pallbearers were: Rod Wiebe, Eddie Chau, Marty Harder, Rick Penner, John Thiessen and Vic Giesbrecht. The interment was held at the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church Cemetery, Schoenfeld, Saskatchewan. NELSON, Mr. Wallace Clifford (Wally)
NELSON, Mr. Wallace Clifford (Wally), passed away peacefully with “his Mollie” at his side at the Swift Current Palliser Regional Care Centre on Friday, November 21, 2003 at the age of 97 years. Left to mourn his passing is his loving wife, Mollie, for 43 years; daughter, Shannon (husband Larry Zahara); granddaughter, Debbie (husband Gary Vollet); great grandsons, Chad and Dane Zahara and their mother, Barb (husband David Dubnyk). He was predeceased by his Father, Dennis Mother, Josephine; brother, Vernon; sisters, Lorraine and Grace; grandson, Kevin; and his first wife, Lauris. Wally was born in Erdahl, Minnesota, USA on June 19, 1906. At a very young age the family moved to Canada and settled in Leinen, Saskatchewan. Later the family moved to Swift Current where Wally attended Central School. He started working at Roaney’s Drugstore, was operator of the Lyrie Theatre and the Drive Theatre. For many years he worked at the Swift Current Bottling works. He retired in 1971, started golf again, bowling, ball games, football, horse racing and most of all “The Broncos”. Wally was a life member of the Elks Lodge – Exalted Ruler and past Exalted Ruler, also member of the Royal Canadian Legion. The Funeral Service was held at Parkside Memorial Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend John Barker officiating. FOWKE Mrs. Florence
FOWKE Mrs. Florence, aged 87 years, passed away on January 23, 2004 at the Palliser Regional Care Centre. The Memorial Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 from First United Church, Swift Current with Reverend John Barker officiating. The organist was Arlene Olson and special music provided by granddaughters, Kathy Franks, Lynn Tessier and Stephanie Tessier. Eulogy was given by Edna Fowke. The usher was Rod Murphy. The pallbearers were: Kim Fowke, Blair Bleakney, Ron Tessier, Gary Franks, Kurtis Franks and Brant Franks. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; infant daughter, Gwendolyn; son-in-law, Keith Miller, daughter, Elaine; granddaughter, June; sisters: Sadie, Opal and Pearl; brothers: Russel, Leslie, Harold and Cliff. Florence is survived by her son, Stan (Edna) Fowke, of St. Martin, MB; son, Dale (Henriette) Fowke, of Neville, SK; grandchildren: Donna (Blair) Bleakney, Saskatoon, Dean Fowke, Nanaimo, B.C., Al (Lynn) Fowke, Sexsmith, AB, Keith (Colette) Fowke, Winnipeg, MB, Kim (Laurie) Fowke, Neville, SK, Kathy (Gary) Franks, Maidstone, SK, Lynn (Ron) Tessier, Eston, SK, Gwen (Ernie) Zurch, Edmonton, AB, Kevin (Kandis) Miller, Richmond, BC, Cindy (Randy) Wiebe, Ryley, AB; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel (Stewart) McBurney, and Audrey (Arnold) Island; brothers: Cecil Timmons, R. Jay (Nancy) Timmons, and Mervin Timmons. Florence was born on June 6, 1916 on the farm of her parents, Richard and Edith Timmons at Glen Bain, SK. She attended Obthorpe school. In 1934 she married Lawrence Fowke and moved to the farm at Neville, SK. She was a busy homemaker and mother – raising three children and being active in the community. Neville United Church, U.C.W., C.G.I.T., Royal Canadian Legion and Rebecca Lodge were important to Florence. She loved quilting, square dancing, music and friends. She sang in the First United Church Choir, was a member of the Odds and Ends Band, enjoyed card games and visiting with friends. Memorial donations may be made to the Palliser Regional care Centre or to the Saskatchewan Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. NEUSTAETER – Mrs. Audrey Irene
NEUSTAETER – Mrs. Audrey Irene age 74 passed away suddenly as a result of a stroke on Monday, February 2, 2004 at her residence at the Prairie View Lodge. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Terry Simonson officiating. The organist was Arlene Olson and the ushers were Jake Dyck and Burnette Olson. The pallbearers were: Arthur Neustaeter, Ron Neustaeter, Rick Pribyl, Ronald Wirsta, Randy Maffenbier and Gary Neustaeter. The eulogy was written by grandchildren; Dean, Teresa and Wes and read by Marion Neustaeter. She was laid to rest next to her husband Henry at Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, SK. Audrey was born in Saskatoon to Muriel Leach on February 17, 1929. She was raised on a farm near Boule Creek, southwest of Cadillac. Audrey was the oldest of 14 children raised by Muriel and Harold Haakenson. She attended elementary school at Boule Creek and high school at Outlook. Audrey married Henry Gordon Neustaeter on October 5, 1948 at South Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Since Henry worked for the C.P.R. they moved around a lot during the early years of their marriage. They were blessed with 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. They settled down moving only four times since arriving in Swift Current in 1965. After the passing of her husband in 1998 Audrey spent a year in the units at Pioneer Lodge. The last 3 ½ years of her life were spent enjoying the friendships she made at the Prairie View Lodge. She was a very active participant in all the activities at the lodge. Audrey was a very friendly out going person and she leaves a large hole in the lives of those she has touched. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many many friends. She is predeceased by: her husband, Henry in 1998; her parents, Muriel in 1994 and Harold in 1974; her brother Murray, in 2002; her sister Mildred in 1937 and her grandson Randy in 2003. She is survived by her daughter; Martha (Tony) of Swift Current and their children & grandchildren; Dean (Jeanette), Stephanie, Chantel, Teresa (Dave), Christopher, Sabrina, Sarah, Wes (Marcie) Saxon and Darian; sons: Dwaine (Shirley) and Jody (Cory) of Saskatoon; Barry of North Battleford; Curtis (Loretta) of Swift Current and their children & grandchildren, Sandra (Jason), Alicia; Rhonda, Shanon, Ethan and Riley. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters: Tom (Doreen), Glen (Edith), Joyce (Gordon), Paula (Fred), Garry (Dorothy), Marg (Lou), Jean (Ivan), John (Linda), Irene (Art), Blanda (John), Alf (Maureen), Sandra; sisters-in-law, Mary Reddekop, Betty Hagen, Ann Neustaeter; step sister, Helen Reimer and many nieces and nephews. Donations made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to the Saskatchewan Diabetes. Association would be appreciated by the family. YONGE Orpha Ada
YONGE Orpha Ada, passed away at her residence on March 11, 2004 after a long and productive life. The Funeral Service was held at Grace United Church in Swift Current on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. with Doris Watt officiating. Orpha was born February 28, 1917 on her parent’s homestead near Central Butte, Saskatchewan. Her life’s work and passion was nursing. She graduated as a psychiatric nurse from the Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn in 1942. She did her part for the war effort by working a few months in a munitions plant in Ontario and then worked as a graduate nurse at a sanitorium for tuberculosis patients in Hamilton, Ontario. Back in Saskatchewan she worked at hospitals in Bengough and Prince Albert. She enrolled at the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1952. She returned to Central Butte to work at the hospital and care for her ailing mother. In 1954 she began her 27-year career as a public health nurse working in Radville, Birch Hills, Prince Albert, Humboldt, and Swift Current. Orpha earned a diploma in public health nursing from the University of Saskatchewan in 1955 and her Bachelor of Nursing from McGill in 1962. She was Regional Nursing Supervisor of the Swift Current Health Region from 1958 until her retirement in 1977. Orpha worked tirelessly for improved health services, including, home care, aids for independent living, meals on wheels and other services for the elderly and speech therapy. Orpha was active in the Sask. Registered Nurses Association; on her retirement they recognized her contribution to nursing with a Life Membership. The Sask. Speech and Hearing Association also made her the “first honorary member in recognition of her pioneering speech and language services in Saskatchewan.” Orpha was active in Grace United Church, the Duplicate Bridge Club and the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society. Orpha is survived by her sister Madeline Simonson, of White Rock, B.C.; nephews: James and Elaine Blazek, of Rosetown, Kurt and Darcy Simonson, of Victoria, Ross Simonson, of Vancouver, Bob and Sandra Yonge, of Central Butte, Murray and Barbara Walter, of Swift Current; nieces: Susan and Rollie Houle, of Saskatoon, Debbie and Bill McCulloch, of Rosetown, and Sandra and Danny Tarnes, Tyvan and their children and grandchildren. Orpha was predeceased by her parents, Geoffrey Yonge (1938) and Lola (Landrigan) Yonge (1953); brothers, Vernon and Douglas; sisters, Jean Blazek and May Walter; sisters-in-law, Margaret Yonge and Emily Yonge; brothers-in-law: James Blazek, Norman Simonson, and Carl Walter; nieces, Linda Yonge and Cindy Blazek; and grand-niece, Christy Yonge.
