Frances Barbara McCartney
Tuesday, December 21, 1999, Frances Barbara McCartney, late of Milestone, beloved wife of Willis McCartney, passed away in her 81st year. Predeceased by her parents, George and Ila Williams, Frances is survived by her loving husband, Willis, of 58 years; two daughters: Faye (Garnet) Altwasser of Brooks, AB, and their children: Brent (Tilly), Laura Marie (Vince) Elgersma, Joanne (Donavon) Saltvold, and Mark; Barbara (Terry) Mitchell of Battleford, and their children: Paul (Jacquie), Brenna Lea (Jon) Bath; four great grandchildren
: Scott, Emma Lynn, Jordan, Myra; one sister, Eunice (Bob) Sambrook; three brothers: Ben (Lily) Williams; Bud Williams; Art (Karen) Williams; two sisters-in-law: Jean Brown, Mildred McCartney; one brother-in-law: Hugh (Janet) McCartney; as well as many special nieces and nephews. Frances' greatest joy in life was doing something for other people, whether it was making a gift or playing a joke at their expense. No matter when someone dropped in, the coffee pot was always on and an extra place was set at the table. Job-sharing was not a new concept to Frances and Willis, as together they successfully operated their family farm for 58 years of marriage. Frances loved to lend a helping hand and share her talents whenever they were need in her community; decorating for 4-H, creating figure skating costumes, baking and decorating special cakes, leading Explorers, writing skits and poems for special occasions, to name a few. Because Frances grew up in adverse times, she was unable to complete her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Consequently she placed strong value on her family's pursuit of post secondary education. However, what she lacked in formal training she more than made up in caring for and nurturing all around her. Frances' grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life. Many wonderful memories were created over the years. We have been blessed indeed. Funeral service was held Friday, December 24 in Milestone United Church, with Rev. Mary Elford officiating. Interment followed in Milestone Cemetery. Her three grandsons and her three grandsons-in-law served as pallbearers. Frances' granddaughters read the scriptures and her grandsons conveyed all the grandchildren's love for Grandma in the eulogy.
Basil McNaught
Basil was born in Radville on September 11, 1918 and passed away in the Weyburn General Hospital on Christmas Eve, 1999 after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Ella, his oldest brother, Kenneth and oldest sister, Winnifred. Basil leaves to mourn Gladys, his wife of 60 years; his son, Jerry (Barb) and granddaughters: Sonia and Sheri of Edmonton; Raymond (Lois) and grandsons: Aaron (Tammy), Brett (Connie), and great granddaughters: Courtney and Breanne of Regina; his brother, Sterling (Beulah) of Claresholm, AB; and his sister, Floreen of Brockville, ON; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. One of Basil's greatest passions was sports, especially hockey and baseball. He loved working with the kids and coached both baseball and hockey for many years. When their youngest son, Raymond played hockey in the SJHL, many miles were put on as they criss crossed the province to watch him play. And in later years he took great pleasure and pride in watching his two grandsons play hockey and ball. Basil enjoyed being around people and loved to go to the Drop In for coffee and cards. And during the winter could almost always be found at the rink. He was a very active member of the Legion and also looked forward to Thursdays when he would sing with the Senior Choral Group in Weyburn. Basil was a real handyman who worked for many years as a carpenter and he was always ready, willing and able to help others with projects. He loved to be with his family and in the last few years most especially his two little great granddaughters, Courtney and Breanne. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 29 from the Yellow Grass United Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Lynda Harrison officiating. Interment followed at the Yellow Grass Cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Bobby Moule, Jack Hill, Artie Hennie, Tom, Doug and Randy Quigley. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared Basil's life." Members of the Royal Canadian Legion formed an Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Yellow Grass United Church, in his memory. George Edward Hoggan
Hoggan, George Edward, born December 28, 1925, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, December 22, 1999. Predeceased by an infant son, Eugene in 1958, his only brother, Joseph Jr. in 1966, his only sister Ilone in 1970, his mother Mary in 1979 and his father Joseph in 1982. George leaves to mourn his wife of 53 years, Mary Hoggan; six children: Elaine (Art Moore), Kara and Dale of Weyburn; Neil (Debbie), Dallas and Lauren of Edmonton, AB; Brian (Debbie), Ryan, Linnette, Shealease of Weyburn; Rodney (Connie), Riley and Rhett of Regina; Donna (Dallas Jorde), Danielle and Joel of Turin, AB; Treena (Herman Isaac), Andrew, Tanner, Morgan and Jared of Weyburn; one great grandson Ty Jorde-Sakal of Turin, AB; and one niece, Gloria Shaw of Calgary, AB. George was the youngest child born to Mary and Joseph Hoggan in Bengough in December of 1926. They farmed at Roncott, SK. George attended school at Hexagon, SK. He worked with his father and brother on the family farm until he married Mary Dean in October of 1946. He and Mary farmed by Richie, SK until 1951. They had two children there. They then moved to a farm 3-1/2 miles N.E. of Bengough. Here they had four more children. Many happy times, good friendships and special memories were made in their time at Bengough. In 1975 George and Mary semi-retired to Weyburn. You could take the farmer off the farm, but you couldn't take the farmer out of him. So once George moved to Weyburn, he worked for several Cedoux area farmers and made many good friendships. George was a good husband, a good father, a good grandfather, and a wonderful friend. George kept himself busy all of the time. He was constantly on the go. He didn't like to be idle. George would do anything for anyone, no questions asked. He constantly gave of himself and never asked nor expected anything in return. His family was his life. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends, but he will be very fondly remembered. By George's request, there will not be a funeral. All who knew him will understand this. Cremation entrusted to Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home Inc., Weyburn. Leo Carl Gust
Leo Carl Gust, late of Ceylon, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 1999, at the Regina General Hospital, at the age of 65 years. Born April 25, 1934, on the NE 1/4 1-5-20 at Ceylon on the Herman Gust farm. Leo Carl was the first child of Rosie (Colibaba) and Walter Gust. Leo attended one-room country schools at Oakville and Round Up through to grade 10. Leo was very active in track and field and has many ribbons and medals for first place. Later, Leo played softball and baseball, and during the 50's enjoyed quite a bit of curling. With his father, Leo farmed near Ceylon, then rented land of his own in 1951. For many years, Leo and Walter farmed and raised Aberdeen Angus cattle. During Leo's late teens and early twenties, he was very involved with the junior section of the Farmers Union. He served on the board of directors and was president of the South Ceylon Rural Telephone Company for many year. On October 20, 1962 he married Diana Dufresne and was blessed with four sons, Neal, born August 23, 1963, Owen born December 1, 1964, Darren born March 24, 1968 and Kirby born June 6, 1971. In 1977, due to illness, Leo was forced to quit active farming. From 1979 to 1983 he worked at various farms, and in 1983 he began his own business, "Leo Gust Carpentry." In 1989 the poor economy led to the closing of the company and Leo then was employed as caretaker of the Ceylon Regional Park. In September of 1989 Leo and Diana moved to Yellow Grass, managing the Yellow Grass Hotel. In May 1991, they moved back to Ceylon, rented a house, and Leo worked for a district farmer-rancher until October when back problems forced him into early retirement. In December of 1991 Leo and Diana purchased a home in Ceylon where they still reside. In 1996 Leo returned to Ceylon Regional Park until 1998, at the same time he was the pest control officer for the Ceylon Minton area. Leo enjoyed woodworking, reading, calligraphy, fishing and being known as Mr. Fix-It. He will also be missed by many people in Ceylon for his tie-tying abilities and his place will be vacant on coffee row. Prayers were said Monday, December 27 at 7:30 p.m. from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Ceylon, with Father Brian Meredith presiding. The funeral mass was held Tuesday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Ceylon, with Father Brian Meredith and Father Stephen Bill Concelebrants. Interment followed in Ceylon Community Cemetery, Ceylon. He leaves to mourn his wife, Diana of Ceylon; his sons: Neal (Tammy) of Ceylon; Owen (Maryann) of Regina; Darren (Anita) of Ceylon; and Kirby (Colleen) of Moose Jaw; grandchildren: Katlan, Amber, Evelyn, Christopher, Phillip, Shariann and Earl; his sisters: Maxine (Norm) Dufresne of Cranbrook, BC; and Myrtle (Cliff) Finstad of Estevan; one brother, Wayne (Marilyn) Gust of Saskatoon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were: Allan Ayotte, Don Miller, Allan DeBruyne, Gilbert Verbeurgt, Jim McLean and Larry Harkes. The honorary pallbearers were: Wilfred Nyhus, Gerry Gerle, Wilfred O'Connor, Brian Madigan, Albert DeBruyne, Dan McPhee, Ron Vermeulen, (Mark Vermeulen), Donald Kaufmann and Eli Juravle. Michael (Mike) Masniuk
On Tuesday, December 21, 1999, Michael (Mike) Masniuk, late of Weyburn, passed away at Souris Valley Extended Care Centre, at the age of 75 years. Predeceased by his mother and father, Paul and Anna Masniuk; five brothers: Nick, Mike, Bill, Joseph and Peter Masniuk; and by one sister, Sophie. Mike is survived by his wife, Christine of Weyburn; one daughter, Lorry (Blaine) Steer of Yellow Grass; and one son, Greg (Lorna) Masniuk of Cochrane, AB; his grandchildren: Kyla (Rod) Robinson; Raina, Carter, Drew and Amber; one brother, Walter (Ann) Masniuk; five sisters: Mary, Ollie, Jean, Victoria and Ann; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mike was born October 12, 1924 at Narcisse, Manitoba. He was raised on a farm in Manitoba with his 12 brothers and sisters, and attended school in Narcisse. Mike worked in Winnipeg, and then moved to Weyburn in 1954 with his wife Chris and daughter Lorry. He was employed as a mechanic at Weyburn Ford, and finished his career with the Department of Highways. Mike enjoyed the outdoors and loved the fishing and hunting trips he took with his son Greg. He liked horses and enjoyed watching the Toronto Maple Leafs play hockey. One of his other hobbies was ceramics. He had a special love for his children and grandchildren. The funeral mass was held Thursday, December 23 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father Francis Hengen celebrant. Inurnment will be held at a later date. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Fred Dolinski, Drew Masniuk, Carter Steer, Jim Stevenson, Curtis Borys and Rod Robinson. Vera McFadden
On Sunday, December 19, 1999, Vera McFadden, late of Weyburn, passed quietly and peacefully away with her children, Janet and James, lovingly by her side, at the age of 89 years, seven months. Predeceased by her parents: Charles and Emma Stapleford; and her husband, George McFadden; and sisters and brothers: Sarah (Nance), Beatrice, Fanny, Winnifred, Ernest, John, Thomas, Victor and Oliver. Vera is survived by her loving children: Sharon McFadden (Bill Klassen) of Saskatoon; David McFadden of Durago, Colorado, Janet Drullette (Tim McDonald), and James (Dawn) McFadden of Weyburn; five grandchildren: Val, James, K.C. Drullette, Dylan McDonald and Kimberly McFadden; one brother-in-law: Russ (Dorothy) McFadden of Weyburn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and her little dog, one of her closest companions, Kaleigh. Vera Violet Gwendoline McFadden was born in Swindon, Wiltshire, England, on May 12, 1910, to Charles and Emma Jane Stapleford. Vera came to Canada on the ship Ausonia, which landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia on December 18, 1938. She lived in the Toronto area for about ten years, where she worked at an ammunitions plant. In 1948 she moved out to Weyburn to be with her sister, Sarah Anne Fey. While here, she met George McFadden, and they were married on January 6, 1951. They lived on a farm just north of Weyburn, where they farmed and raised their four children. In 1979 they retired from farming and moved into town. Unfortunately, they did not have long to enjoy their retirement together as George passed away on November 26, 1980. Vera was a quiet, generous, gentle soul, who was used to hard work and did more than her fair share of work demanded by life on a farm. She lovingly raised her four children, she separated milk, churned butter, tended the large gardens growing many of the family's vegetables, spent many long hours cooking, canning, cleaning, sewing and knitting, which she loved to do. There were many sweaters and outfits she knitted for her children and later her little grandchildren. Vera also attended many a bingo game with her best friend and companion, her daughter Janet. She enjoyed their nights out to bingo together, as well she did her family gatherings to Mom's (and Grandma's) for Sunday suppers, and it was something she found very difficult to have to give up in her later years, when deteriorating health made her have to give up her home, and move to the nursing home, where resided right up to her passing. A heartfelt thank you to all who cared for Mom in the last few years, her family appreciates it deeply for they loved her so much. Because of this we shall endure forever with you in our hearts. "God bless you, Mom." Funeral service was held Thursday, December 23 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Bill Corkum officiating minister. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. Lily Edworthy
Lily Edworthy passed away December 21, 1999 at the age of 79 years. Predeceased by her husband, Wilfred; sister Ivy and brother George. She is survived by sisters, Elsie Myren and June Hartley of Ogema; sister-in-law, Mamie Greenawalt of Ogema; daughter Geri (Richard) Gemmell of New Zealand and their children: Andrew and Danielle; son Dale (Corinne) Edworthy; and special friends Lady and Buffy of White City; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Lily was raised on the farm south of Ogema as a child, and lived her adult life in the Ogema district. She enjoyed her pets, doing fancy work, country music, and having tea and sweets with family and friends. Mom always had a sense of humour. The last two years she resided in the Deep South Personal Care Home, Pangman. She passed away peacefully in Weyburn General Hospital. Our special thanks to the caring staff on 2nd east. Funeral service was held Monday, December 27 at 2:00 p.m. from Ogema United Church with Rev. Lynda Harrison officiating. Interment followed in Ogema Cemetery. George Vargo Jr.
On Saturday, December 18, 1999, George Vargo Jr., late of Radville, passed away at the age of 87 years. Predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Vargo; one daughter, Beverly Anne Mickler; two brothers: Elmer and Edward Vargo; one sister, Helene Wick and one nephew, Mark Vargo. George is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Eleanor Vargo; one daughter, Darlene (Willmar) Petterson of Gladmar; one son-in-law, David Mickler of Radville; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers: Henry Vargo of Moosomin; and Lawrence (Carole) Vargo of Ceylon; one sister, Anne Stoppa of Regina; two sisters-in-law: Ivadell Vargo of Gladmar; and Eva Vargo of Moose Jaw; one brother-in-law, Ernie (Jean) Wick of Weyburn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. George was born on December 7, 1912 in Superior, Wyoming, the third child in a family of seven. He came with his family to the Gladmar area to homestead. His formal education was completed at Busy Bee School and then he joined the work force. George married Eleanor Norman in August, 1937 and had two daughters. George's education 'from the school of life' made him a Jack-of-all-trades. He farmed for three years, then on to Winnipeg where he worked for the C.N.R. After seven years, he moved back to Gladmar, where he operated a backhoe and was drayman. He then became employed at the Sybouts Sodium Sulphate plant where he did lathe work and carpentry for a number of years. Then, in 1968 they moved to Regina where they spent nine years as apartment caretakers and he worked also as an elevator operator. One last move brought them to Radville in 1977 where they retired. Due to ill health, George entered the Marian Home in 1994 and remained there until his passing. George enjoyed joking and when he got the twinkle in his eye, you knew that something was coming. His wit was there even a few days before he died, although a man of few words at times, what he said would be just enough to cap the moment. Funeral service was held Tuesday, December 21 at 2:00 p.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Radville, with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Interment followed in Laurier Cemetery, Radville. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Chris Peterson, Hal Peterson, Joey Mickler, Darren Mickler, Brian Hipfner and Bob Kovach. Helen Marlene Sams
On Tuesday, December 21, 1999, Helen Marlene Sams, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 68 years. Predeceased by her parents, James and Elsie Bell; and one brother, Melvin Bell. Marlene is survived by her children: Elsie (Ken) Thompson of Creelman; Vangy Hill of Brandon, MB; Mark Sams; Ruth (Ron) Klatt of Stoughton; Ken (Samantha) Sams of Ontario; grandchildren: Deana, James, B.J., Rachel, Daniel, Michel, Riley and Sheiby; three sisters: Lois (John) Griffin of Heward; Carol Bell of New Denver, BC; and Lynn Bell of BC; one brother, Bill Bell of Radville; one sister-in-law, Elsie Bell of Weyburn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Marlene was born June 10, 1931 at Lampman, to James and Elsie Bell. She was raised in the Benson area and attended Hillure School. Marlene settled in Hansworth and was very involved in ranch life. She loved horses and enjoyed attending gymcanas. Going on trail rides and camping were her favorite activities while living at her home at Rocky Acres. She raised five children and was delighted at the birth of each of her eight grandchildren. Marlene retired and was living in Weyburn at Bison Manor at the time of her passing. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 30 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Stoughton, with Rev. Jann Sampson officiating. Interment to follow at a later date. Jabez (Jabe) Henry Holman
Jabez (Jabe) Henry Holman, born April 25, 1912 in Hardy, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully in the Regina General Hospital December 17, 1999. Jabe will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Doris (Lynn) of Weyburn; and their children: Larry (Melanie) Holman of Edmonton, AB; Betty (Gerald) Schnell of Red Deer, AB; Lois (Doug) Meikle of Pharr, Texas; Garth (Sandra) Holman of Midale; and Glen (Trudy) Holman of Dartmouth, NS; 20 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; as well as many nieces and nephews. Jabe was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Holman; one son, Henry Holman; one grandson, Kris Holman; three brothers: Albert, Donald and Lawrence Holman; and three sisters: Martha Hilrud, Marie Holizki and Bertha Kerr. Jabe was very active with the Royal Canadian Legion, where he volunteered many hours of his time. A very dedicated husband and father, he worked for the Canadian National (CNR) for over forty years. Funeral service was held Monday, December 20, at 11:00 a.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens, Estevan. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion were honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were his grandsons: Jerry Holman, Jason Meikle, Michael Schnell, Craig Schnell, Brad Schnell and Ken Schnell. Clifford Franklin McDowell
On Sunday, December 19, 1999, Clifford Franklin McDowell, late of Stoughton, passed away at the age of 81 years. Predeceased by his parents, John and Mary McDowell; two brothers: Norris and Avery McDowell; and one grandson, Shayne Steele. Clifford is survived by his wife, Shirley McDowell of Stoughton; daughter, Heather (Brian) Steele and their children: Allison and Garett of Windthorst; son Ian (Trina) McDowell and their family: Kerry and Danielle of Regina; one sister, Reta McDowell of Regina; as well as many nieces and nephews. Clifford was born August 4, 1918 at Heward, 16-9-9 W2nd, the youngest of four children. He attended Heward School #1021. On August 11, 1953 he married Shirley Webber at Stoughton. They farmed and raised a son, Ian and a daughter, Heather. He loved life and his family and friends were very important to him. Clifford was interested in people, community affairs, music and any family achievements. He was a member of the Wheat Pool, involved with the Rural Telephone and Rink. He was a Councillor and was responsible for the building of the New Heward Hall. Clifford was the Heward rep for the founding Board of Cannington Home Care. He was very active in the United Church all of his life in various offices. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, reading, travelling and camping. Esso coffee time with his friends each morning was a highlight. He and Shirley celebrated their 40th anniversary and his 80th birthday. A memorial service was held Thursday, December 23 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Stoughton, with Rev. Jann Sampson and Pastor Ed Weger officiating. The organist was Blaine Morrison with Evelyn Taylors Singing Group bringing special music. Interment followed in Heward Cemetery. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. Nellie Henley
Henley, Nellie passed away on December 22, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Frank; sons: Harold and Harvey; daughter-in-law, Heather and grandchildren Julia and Marshall. In accordance with Nellie's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
