Albert John Boorne

1901 - 2000

Albert John Boorne died peacefully in his sleep on December 14, 2000, at the Drew Nursing Home in Sackville, New Brunswick. He was 99 years old. Mr. Boorne was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on October 22, 1901. He attended school in Ottawa and was employed for 40 years with the Canadian Bank of Commerce. He worked for the Bank in Ottawa, Lindsay, Peterborough, Trenton and Toronto, Ontario. He was a Branch Manager in Toronto and Trenton, and retired as Principal of the Bank of Commerce Staff College in Toronto. For many years he was a elder of the United Church of Canada, and a member of various social organizations.

On December 13, 1925, 75 years prior to his death, he married Stella Mae Lawson in Ottawa, and they remained happily married until her death in 1988. After his retirement from the Bank, Mr. and Mrs. Boorne returned to Ottawa, and in 1982 they moved into the Lodge on Porter's Island in Ottawa. In 1994, Mr. Boorne moved to Sackville, New Brunswick where he resided happily with his grandson Stephen, granddaughter-in-law Jessie, and their family, until 1999. He then moved into the Drew Nursing Home. Interment will be in Ottawa in the Spring where he will join his wife, Stella.

In his youth, Mr. Boorne was very active in sports. He was the youngest member of the Ottawa Gunners Hockey Club when they won the Ottawa and District Championship in 1920. He also played for the Bank of Commerce in the Ottawa Bank League, which was taken very seriously in those days. He often joked that he was hired by the Bank primarily to play hockey. His subsequent rise through the ranks led his family and friends to question this modest assessment of his banking abilities. Throughout his life he was a polite and courteous gentlemen, and he will be sorely missed. He is survived by his son Ron, daughter-in-law Danise, grandson Stephen, granddaughter-in-law Jessie, great grandsons Jeremy and Anthony, and great granddaughter Sarah, all of Sackville, New Brunswick; and sister-in-law Helen Lalonde, brother-in-law Manuel Lalonde, and several nieces and nephews in Ottawa.

Those who wish to honour his memory may make donations to the Drew Nursing Home in Sackville, New Brunswick, in recognition of the great kindness and respect with which he was treated by the staff until the end.
