BARANIUK, Merine (née Jenks): Merine Ann Baraniuk passed away peacefully on January 27, 2007 at the age of 68, at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Brandon, MB. Merine, the youngest daughter of Robert and Louise Jenks, was born on February 5, 1938 in Ste. Rose du Lac. Her parents moved the family to Cayer, MB where she attended convent school. Her family moved to Brandon in 1947 where she attended David Livingston School, King George School and Alexandra School. On July 5, 1958, Merine was united in marriage to Peter Baraniuk. In 1964, Merine and Peter built a home for their family in Brandon, where they resided for 41 years. Merine was employed at the Twin Pines Motel, Brandon General Hospital and the Agricultural Extension Centre. Because Merine wanted to stay at home to dedicate all of her time to raising her four daughters, she decided to provide a babysitting service in her home which she did for a number of years. Merine enjoyed many things such as knitting, gardening, crossword puzzles and playing cards. She was also an avid bird watcher; hummingbirds being her favorite. She canvassed for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and was a faithful watcher of her favorite soap opera. There were many things Merine enjoyed but her passion in life was her family. She was honest, compassionate, genuine and loved people unconditionally. She gave of herself unselfishly and she was the only person you could count on to keep a secret. She encouraged her family and was a role model for her daughters. Many of her children’s friends called her "Mom" which is a real testimony as to the kind of person she was. Left to cherish the memory of Merine are her loving husband Peter and four daughters: Karen Baraniuk (Duncan), Sharron Smith (Rod) Stettler, AB, Sherryl Mashinter (Jacques Lessard), Austin, MB and Kathy Stanley (Dan), Boggy Creek, MB. Merine has six grandchildren: Greg, Matthew, Lindsay, Ali, Wesley and Travis and one great grandson Ty, who is the apple of her eye! Merine has five step grandchildren: Paul, Wanda, Brigitte, Jennelle and Jenique. Merine has one brother Ivor Jenks (Eleanor Reeve), Brandon, MB and one sister, Annette Thompson (Floyd), Lethbridge, AB. She is survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Merine was predeceased by her father Robert in 1977, her mother Louise in 2004 and two special sisters-in-law, Doreen in 1997 and Helen in 2001. There are numerous people that Merine's family would like to thank. A most sincere thank you to the caring and compassionate staff at Rideau Park Personal Care Home for providing unconditional care that enabled Mom to have grace and dignity, even on the bad days. Thank you to Dr. Scott Blythe, Dr. Norman and staff at the Brandon Regional Health Centre and the Assiniboine Centre. No words could ever express our gratitude to Alf Price, our family’s guardian angel. Your genuine care and concern over the years is appreciated and will never be forgotten. Thank you to Larry Roulette for all the support you provided to our family. A very special thank you to neighbors, Ken and Julie, who, over the years, shared a friendship so dear that you became a part of our family. Thank you for everything you did to enrich Mom’s life. Thank you to Janice Robinson for forming and embracing a friendship with our Mom. You were a ray of sunshine and brought her joy on your daily visits. We are grateful that you had the privilege of getting to know our Mom. Special thanks to Mom’s niece, Judy, for her companionship and endless visits along the way. Mom valued and enjoyed the time you spent with her. At Merine’s request, no funeral service will be held. A private memorial ceremony will be held by her family to celebrate her life. Cremation service will be provided by Brockie Donovan. In memory of Merine, and in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Rideau Park Personal Care Home Donation Fund, 525 Victoria Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 6S9.

BRIDGEMAN: Edith Eleanor Bridgeman (Murray) passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on September 2nd, 2008 with her family by her side.

Edith was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan to Bill and Mary Murray, on March 25th, 1919. She lived in Moosomin until 10 years of age when her mother passed away. At that time, she went to Edmonton to live with an aunt and uncle Helen and John Murray. After finishing school, Edith worked at University Hospital in Edmonton and joined the Air Force in 1942 where she took her nursing. She was stationed at Halifax, Dauphin, Rivers and Edmonton. While nursing in Edmonton, she met Lorne Bridgeman. They were married October 25th, 1945. At that time, they moved to Moline, Manitoba to farm.

Edith must have been very much in love to move from Edmonton, where she had running water and electricity, to having neither of those luxuries. She worked very hard helping Lorne with everything possible on the farm, milking cows, raising and butchering chickens, feeding pigs, driving the tractor, and the list goes on and on. During this time, she had four children. In 1958, Edith and Lorne moved to Brandon where Edith nursed at the Assiniboine Hospital. She worked at the Singer Sewing Center, the Brandon Co-op cafeteria and for fifteen years at Roger Mandzuik denturist's office before retiring in 1984.

Edith and Lorne enjoyed travelling in their retirement, going on several bus tours which included the Maritimes, Alaska, Branson and Nashville. They also travelled to Florida and Whitehorse. Edith enjoyed quilting, bowling, curling, floor shuffleboard, knitting and playing games with the grandchildren. Edith was a member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Lodge for 25 years. In 1998, Edith was diagnosed with macular degeneration, but that didn't slow her down a bit. In 2002, Edith moved into Riverheights Terrace, after the passing of her beloved Lorne. She lived there until 2007, when her health declined following some major changes at Riverheights. At that time, Edith moved in with her daughter Diane and husband Brian. She regained her health, other than the macular degeneration and long time arthritis, and continued to be very active with her family.

Edith was predeceased by her husband Lorne and her sisters, Kay, Jessie, Violet and Marie. She will be sadly missed by daughters Helen Ford (Dale) of Killarney, Diane Bergquist (Brian) of Brandon, son Harvey Bridgeman (Heather) of Brandon and daughter Rena Carnahan of Calgary, nine grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Edith is survived by sisters Evelyn Ayers and Eva Simpart, sisters-in-law Mary McLaughlin, Marg Bridgeman, Ethel English, Janie Bridgeman and brothers-in-law Earl Bridgeman (Evelyn) and Arnold Bridgeman (Greta) and numerous nieces and nephews. Edith's friendly, loving spirit will be greatly missed, we will cherish the memories.

The Funeral Service will be held at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, on Monday, September 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society, #105 – 386 Broadway Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3R6.

BAXTER: Mrs. Hilda Marion Baxter (Bright), beloved mother of Ivan, Gary and Grant, passed away peacefully at the Valleyview Care Centre on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at the age of 96 years. A private family service will be held with interment at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Hilda may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8.

BAKER (neé Towner): Florence Irene passed away August 26, 2008 at Fairview Home in Brandon after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Mom was born July 26, 1932 in Dauphin, MB. She will be missed greatly by family and friends. Mom is survived by her husband Ronald of 48 years; her children Kelly (Jim) of Brandon and George (Joanne) of Virden. She is also survived by grandkids Chancey (Angela), Sarah, Adam, Andrew, Jonathan and Mathew; great grandkids Zach and Davvelynn; and by sister, Betty Bulmer, of Dauphin. Mom attended school in Dauphin, MB, then moved to Winnipeg to work for many years in the Eaton’s mail order department on Portage Avenue. In 1959, she met and then married her husband in 1960. From 1962 to 1966, the family lived at Metz, France as a military family. After 2 years at Camp Borden Ontario, Mom moved to CFB Shilo for another 8 years. Upon her husband’s retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces, Mom moved to a new bungalow in Brandon where she lived until the state of her health required a move to Fairview Home. Mom had always been very active in the Salvation Army until recent years. She enjoyed travelling and handicrafts and could be counted on to contribute to many charities. This, in spite of her profound hearing loss – which she never allowed to slow her down. The family’s heartfelt thanks go to the caring staff at Fairview, the 5th floor and most recently the 4th floor who made her so comfortable with their care and compassion towards both Mom and her family. The family also wish to thank Carma from Mental Health Services for the Elderly, Dr. Blythe, Dr. Lint and Dr. Vipul for their support. Many thanks to co-workers for their support over the last few years. The Funeral Service will take place at the Salvation Army Citadel, 9 Princess Ave. East, Brandon on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Captain Bruce MacKenzie officiating. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Mom’s honour, please consider the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, #1, 613-10th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4G6, or the Canadian Diabetes. Association, 727B – 10th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4G7.
