GIBBONS: Brenda Verna Gibbons passed away on Friday, February 6, 2009 at 11:10 a.m. after losing her battle with cancer.
Brenda was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, on January 18, 1955, moving to Douglas, Manitoba, with her family at a very young age. She had been visually impaired all her life. Brenda attended school for the blind in Brantford, Ontario, until grade nine. She then attended Elton Collegiate for the rest of her high school days. Brenda graduated from Brandon University with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1982. She married Walter Gibbons in 1985. Mrs. Gibbons made her home in Brandon, Manitoba, for the rest of her life.
Brenda played the harp and piano for enjoyment. She was also an avid wine maker as well as a great cook, and she was a very good listener to other people’s problems. She had a solid, joyful spirit and a strong faith in God exhibiting much compassion and kindness.
Mrs. Gibbons is predeceased by her father, Alex Malenko. She is survived by her brother Wayne Malenko, her mother Verna Malenko, her husband Walter Gibbons, stepson Daniel, his wife Emily and their daughter Elizabeth Drena Lane Gibbons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Wayne Larsen, Stewart Hayter, Daniel Gibbons, Cecil Bayliss, Lloyd Safruik and George Carmichael.

GRAY: Patricia Warren Gray, (née Buckley) passed away peacefully December 17, 2008 at Hillcrest Place, Brandon. Pat was born February 14, 1914 at Suffield, Alberta. She was the daughter of Wellington G. and Mable Buckley. The family moved back to the Buckley farm in the Clinton District east of Brandon while Pat was still an infant. Pat grew up there and attended Clinton school and later Brandon Collegiate Institute. She married John Leslie Gray in 1937, and they farmed on the Grand Valley Road until their retirement to Brandon in 1980. There were two children born to Pat and Les, a daughter, Patricia Ann, and a son, Donald Jerome. Pat has two granddaughters, Shauna and Barb, and three great-grandson
s, Codey, Brayden and Diego, and many nieces and nephews. Pat was predeceased by her husband Les, two sisters and two brothers. Pat enjoyed a long healthy and active life. She was a life long member of Central United Church and for many years a 4-H leader in the Poplar Hill 4-H Club. During her retirement, Pat enjoyed golf and curling and was an avid Wheat King supporter for many years. Pat will be sadly missed by her many friends and family. Funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Shannon McCarthy of Central United Church officiating. Interment will be held at the Brandon Cemetery

GRIMSHAW: Betty Irene Grimshaw passed away suddenly and peacefully with family by her side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, December 15, 2008 at the age of 94 years. Mom was born in 1914 on the family farm in the Daly District north of Brandon, daughter of Anna Mary and John Windover. She attended the district school. After completing her schooling, she worked for some of the neighbors looking after their children and the daily chores. Later, she worked for the Burns Company on Pacific Avenue grading eggs. She met and married Stanley (Jim) Grimshaw and together they raised three daughters, Gail, Doreen & Debbie. Mom also looked after approximately (37) foster children, one being in her care for 3 years. In the early 50’s, we girls decided to get into showing ponies as Dad had bought us a pony, and a little dog, on his return from the war. Naturally, we had to have mom and dad haul us all over Manitoba, buy feed, care for the ponies and everything else that goes with having animals, but lucky for us, they enjoyed taking part. When her grandchildren were born, Rodney, Sherry, & Corey, her attention was taken with all three babysitting, playing, and buying them whatever they wanted. When Sherry got interested in the horses, mom used to love coming to all the fairs with us helping and sitting down chatting with all the friends we had met. As the years went by and the grandchildren grew up, as luck would have it, in 1994, she was a Great Gramma to Nicholas, Sherry's first son and in 1997, along came her second great grandson, brother to Nicholas, Brenden. Now she could have more children to spoil and play whatever games they wanted to play. With Rodney’s marriage to Sandee, she was lucky enough to gain two step great granddaughters, Julia and Rachel. With mom, the more the merrier, and she always got a kick out of Corey’s big orange loveable cat. Mom loved messing around in the flowers, cutting grass, and doing whatever she could find to do outside, if all else failed, she could always con you into painting. Mom loved the outdoors. She would play ball, ride horses, ride snow-machines and just act like the rest of us over-grown kids along with the real kids. At this time of the year, her favorite thing was making Christmas puddings. We would drive in to pick her up for shopping and out she would come with a little dish and a spoon full of each one of the puddings to try. When she was satisfied with the puddings, it was on to the same thing with the sauce. One was never enough and it always had to be perfect, and always was perfect! She loved to cook and bake and did so in the very best fashion She was always there to listen to our problems and happy times. Her support like everything else was always 100%. Mom belonged to all the horse and pony clubs we could muster up for her and really enjoyed being an active member in The Brandon Pony Club, The Light Horse Society, Manitoba Gymkana Association, The Girls Barrel Racing, and anything else we could volunteer her for. Mom was also a member of Central United Church. Her favorite thing was her annual Picnic Birthday Party which we did every year, unless the odd time the weather forced us to improvise. Mom was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1983, her brother Jack Windover, sisters Evelyn, Grace and Lorraine, niece Jackie Edwards, brothers-in-law Gordon Gerry, Ralph Porteous and sister-in-law Minnie Bajus. She is survived by her three daughters Gail (George) Miller, Doreen (Russell) Little and Debbie (Jim) Quintaine, grandson Rodney Miller and wife Sandee, great granddaughters Julia and Rachel; granddaughter Sherry Howard and great grandsons Nicholas and Brenden and grandson Corey Quintaine. A private graveside service was held on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the Brandon Cemetery
with Rev. Shannon McCarthy of Central United Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westman Dreams For Kids Foundation, Unit 203, 37-11th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4J2 or Dinsdale Personal Care Home, 510 – 6th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 3N9.

GAMMACK: The death of Edith Gammack, late of Brandon, occurred Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Assiniboine Centre. Edith was born at Hamiota, Manitoba on December 4, 1922. She received her schooling in Decker, Manitoba. She married the late Robert Gammack on December 24, 1941. Edith leaves to mourn her passing three daughters and one son: Donna (Reg) McRae of Strathmore, Alberta, Brenda (Rick) Hoffer of Regina, Saskatchewan, Greg of Brandon and Shelly (Bob) Curtis of Kisbey, Saskatchewan; 11 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one sister Ruby Weber of Miniota, Manitoba. Edith was predeceased by son Robert, grandson Cory Hoffer and two brothers and one sister. A memorial service will be held at Campbell’s Funeral Chapel, Hamiota, MB on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Brown of St. George’s Anglican Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of Canada, Suite 110 – 1202 Centre Street S.E., Calgary, Alberta, T2G 5A5.
GIESBRECHT: Eva May Giesbrecht of Brandon, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2008 at Fairview Nursing Home at the age of 90 years. She was born on November 17, 1917 in St. John, North Dakota. Eva is survived by sons Harold and Andrew (Marg); daughters Joyce Skinner, Ella (Terry) Phelps, Judy (Bruno) Milin, Bonnie (Terry) Shakotko; daughter-in-law Shirley Langan; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters Annabelle and Evelyn. Eva was predeceased by her husband Isaac Giesbrecht, son Bernard, daughter-in-law Darlene and son-in-law Harvey Skinner. In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation will take place with a graveside service to be held on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at the Brandon Cemetery
at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Joseph Choji of St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church officiating. Donations in memory of Eva may be made to the Fairview Fund, 1351 – 13th Street, Brandon, R7A 4S6.
GYSELMAN: Edith Lucy Gyselman (Parkin) June 23, 1919 - October 17, 2008. At the age of 89 years Edith Gyselman a well loved resident of Hillcrest Personal Care home, surrounded by family slipped peacefully from this world to join her husband Bill.
Edith, her twin May, and 3 other sisters were born and raised in Winnipeg, MB. As a young girl, Edith was an avid speed skater participating in many local competitions. As a young woman she worked as a stenographer for the Manitoba Wheat Board joining the war effort in the latter 1940’s earning the rank of sergeant after only 4 years. There was often shared banter between Bill and Edith until he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant, marginally outranking Edie.
Edith and Bill where active square dancers, bowlers and church participants. Church bake sales looked forward to the pies she would donate which would be spoken for well ahead of sale time and on occasion would have to be auctioned off.
In 1967 Edith and Bill moved from Shilo to Brandon to a small acreage where gardening became a passion and weekly farmers markets a routine thru harvest time. Each summer the family would enjoy a camping vacation with Edith an eager participant and game for almost any outdoor adventure.
As the family grew older Edith and Bill would take a early vacation to visit family in other provinces including regular trips to Kansas City, MO to visit her twin May. As grandchildren came along Sunday family dinners became the norm. Edith doing the baking, and Bill cooking the main meal.
Edith was an active member of the Christian Women’s League for many years and remained a faithful servant of God and the church to the end attending church services and receiving communion regularly.
Edith was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Bill, her sisters Kay and Beth, and her niece Pat Charter and great niece Andrea Charter. Leaving to mourn her passing is her eldest daughter Ellen ( John ) Earle, son Bill (Carol) Gyselman and youngest daughter Maureen (Fred) Comeau as well as grandchildren Jonathan Earle, Charlene (Martin) Duval, Amanda and Brody Gyselman, Adam and Analee Comeau and great grandchildren Braeden and Jacob Duval and Xander Gyselman sisters May Mozur , Ruth Nolan as well as numerous nieces, nephews and relatives.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Brockie Donovan Funeral Home, 332 - 8th St., on Tuesday, October 21st at 1:00 p.m. Father Joseph Choji as Celebrant. Interment will take place at the Brandon Cemetery
with refreshments to follow at the St. Augustine's Parish Hall.

GIESBRECHT: Mrs. Esther Giesbrecht passed away peacefully at her residence, Fairview Home, on Friday, September 12, 2008 at the age of 86 years. The Funeral Service will be held at the Grace Mennonite Church, 951-10th Street, on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ken Quiring officiating. Interment will take place at Thomson In The Park Cemetery, Winnipeg. Donations in memory of Esther may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 5K9.
HEENEY: Dennis Heeney, formerly of the R.M. of Elton, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at the age of 73 years. Dennis is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Barb (Dave) Dixon and Maureen (Gary) McDougall and son, Bob (Judy) Heeney and grandchildren: Meagan and Jennifer Dixon and Jordan, Jessica and Jaxon Heeney. Also surviving is Dennis’ sister, Margaret (Jim) Robertson and family of Edmonton, AB. A memorial service will be held at Central United Church, 327 – 8th Street, on Monday, November 20, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. with Mona Franklin officiating. If friends wish, donations, in memory of Dennis, may be made to a charity of choice.
