HARRIS: Kenneth Howard Harris passed away at his home, near Brandon, on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at the age of 84 years. Ken was born April 3, 1922 on the family farm in the former Glen Souris District, south east of Brandon, where he still resided at his passing. Ken’s childhood was spent helping out his parents on the farm. He attended school at the Blythe School, located approximately a mile and a half from his home. Ken continued to farm with his father after he had left school. It was a mixed grain farm, with cattle. Ken eventually gave up the cattle by the early 1980s and retired from farming in 1994. He also owned and operated a sand and gravel pit. Ken very much enjoyed this work, selling, not only to neighbours, but contractors, as far away as Winnipeg. He retired partially from the gravel business in the 1990s after selling the pit, but continued to help out as long as his health permitted. While working on the farm with his dad, Ken met Doreen Taylor, and they were married October 26, 1963. They raised two daughters, Susan and Shannon together on the farm. Ken shared his love of animals with his children – horses with Susan and dogs and cats with Shannon. He was also a long-standing member of the Wawanesa Game & Fish Association and held positions of president and vice president, as well as helped construct a wildlife park in Wawanesa. Ken helped organize the annual Wawanesa Game & Fish Wildlife suppers, which he attended every year with his family. He also served his community as councillor for Ward One in the Municipality of Cornwallis, a position he held from 1974 to 1986. During this time, Ken, and his wife Doreen, regularly attended the annual municipal conventions. Ken very much enjoyed the game of curling. He spent many years curling in Wawanesa, winning several tournament championships with his teammates. He curled until health would no longer allow it, but Ken would often go and watch a few games. Ken was also a lifelong hunter, and did some trapping as well. You could always find him out in the fall, hunting deer with his friends, and also, in recent years, his son-in-law, Tim. He was able to bring home a few trophy heads for his efforts. Ken always tried to take life on the lighter side. He enjoyed time with family, friends and neighbours. There were card games with neighbours and some Saturday nights in Wawanesa where a few antics were carried out in fun. Ken was able to see most of Canada on travels with his family. Most of this time was spent in Ontario and Saskatchewan, but he had been from B.C. and Alberta to The Maritimes and Newfoundland. His travels continued at home as well. Ken was often seen driving around the neighbourhood in his truck – just to see what was happening. He also spent his retirement, most mornings, at the coffee shop in Brandon, sharing some laughs with longtime friends. Ken will be remembered as a wonderful, caring husband and father. He was a loyal and trusting friend. Ken was a bright light in all of our lives and will be missed dearly. s: Kyle Harris, Tyler Mayo and Parker Mayo and sister, Irene (Charles) Zinck of Ottawa. Ken was predeceased by his mother, Lillian (1952) and his father, Cyril (1976). A funeral service, celebrating Ken’s life, was held on Monday, November 6, 2006 at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, followed by interment at the Brandon Cemetery. A reading was given by Roxanne Seymour and the urn bearer was John Seymour. Both thought of Ken as a "Dad". Honorary pallbearers were all in attendance. HARDING: Vincent Warden, born May 24, 1967, passed away suddenly on October 3, 2007 at Brandon, Manitoba. Beloved son of The Rt. Rev. Malcolm and Marylou Harding, dear brother of Ann and Ken Blackmore, Calgary, AB and Jane and Wil Lamont, Brandon, MB, uncle of Ellen, Emily, Benjamin and Sarah. A private family committal service will be held at the St. Matthew’s Cathedral Columbarium in Brandon. A Memorial Service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 1011-5th St., Brandon on Monday, October 8, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Brown officiating. HOPKINS: Mrs. Viola Hopkins of Brandon, beloved wife of the late Donald James Hopkins, passed away at the Assiniboine Centre on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at the age of 75 years. Mom was one of eight children and the Evans family lived on a farm southwest of Nesbitt, Manitoba. She started school in Minnewawa and, when the family moved to Nesbitt, she attended and finished her schooling in a one-room school. Years later, she completed her education in bookkeeping in Brandon. She moved to Brandon and, over the years, she worked at Woolworths, McCallum Jewellers, Brandon General Hospital, Dinsdale Home and the Brandon Mental Health Centre. She married Henry Leslie and raised three children, Ron, Ken and Karen. She was a wonderful Mother and did a great job raising her children. She later remarried Don Hopkins and the family was extended to include his children, Cathy and James. Mom and Don had a camper and liked to spend the weekends at local campgrounds and their holidays on camping trips. For several years, they owned their cabin and enjoyed summers at Oak Lake. Mom was talented in crafts, baking and cooking, but her real passion was in quilting. Each quilt was a work of art because it was unique in design and materials, which was often scraps of material scavenged from the family. Her quilts were a labor of love that she gifted to others. Vi was predeceased by her parents, Robert and May, her sister Jean, brothers Bill, Bob and Herb and her husband Don. Surviving to cherish her memory are her siblings Jessie, Ed and Merle and their families; son Ron and his wife Darlene, Shannon and Dave, Sherri and Jason and great granddaughter Ava; son Ken, David and Tammy, great grandchildren Emma and Nate, Erin and Greg and great grandson Benjamin; daughter Karen and her husband Richard, children Richard, Elizabeth and John; stepson Butch and his wife Brenda and stepdaughter Cathy and her husband Jamie, Stacey and Amanda. Funeral services took place on July 25, 2007 in Brandon, Manitoba. An interment service was conducted at the Brandon Cemetery
followed by a service at the Brockie Donovan Chapel. The family is grateful to Colleen Gareau who conducted the services and to Doug Coldwell who honoured Mom by playing several selections, including Amazing Grace on the bagpipes at the cemetery and at the Chapel. Thanks also to all our family and friends that helped celebrate Mom’s life. Flowers are gratefully declined. HOLBROOK: Edith Holbrook of Brandon, beloved mother of Myrna (Jack) Scribner, passed away peacefully at her residence in the Valleyview Lodge on Monday, June 18, 2007 at the age of 85 years. Besides her daughter, Edith will be lovingly remembered by her granddaughters, Sandra Couling (John Dalgleish) and Cindy (Craig) Robins and great grandchildren, Hayley, Dexter, Kayla and Andrea as well as her sister, Eileen (George) Sewell. A graveside ceremony will be held at the Brandon Cemetery

HOOKE: It is with profound sadness that the family of Alice Hooke announces her sudden passing on March 20, 2007 at the Brandon Regional Health Center. Alice was born November 17, 1923 in Neudorf, Saskatchewan. As a young woman, she moved to Winnipeg and joined the Canadian Armed Forces, receiving the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. It was at that time that she married George Hooke and they began raising their family. Alice was a loving, devoted wife and mother. Nothing gave her more pleasure than to be the number one fan (and chauffeur) at her sons’ and daughters’ special events….believing "that’s what Moms are for." As her family grew, she became interested in a part time sales position with Beauty Counsellor, which led to District Manager. This certainly became her avocation. She enjoyed the interaction with her clients and the camaraderie with her fellow employees. Alice was an avid bridge and cribbage player and accomplished bowler. She enjoyed her yard and she loved sports, especially baseball, curling and golf. Of course, first and foremost, Alice was a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She taught her children well, and lived to watch them flourish. She took pride in herself, her family and her accomplishments. Her contentment can be attributed to the fullness of her life and the love that surrounded her. The world is a better place for having known her. Remaining to cherish Alice’s memory are five children: Lynette (Bob) Martin of Minneapolis, Georgia (Don) Weaver of High River, Barry (Kathy) Hooke of Portage la Prairie, Ken (Kim) Hooke of Winnipeg and Kevin (Laurie) Hooke of Winnipeg, as well as grandchildren: Robby and Christie Martin, Todd and Traci McLeod, Kayla and Christopher Hooke and Hailey Hooke, and her great grandchildren: Mac, Lacey and Reese Martin, Kari McLeod and Tyler and Brandon Schenkley. She will be lovingly remembered by her extended family: her brother Gordon (Ann) Bender of Brandon, her sister Irene of Edmonton, as well as many nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1992, her parents, Jacob and Elizabeth Bender, her granddaughter Tammy McLeod and her great granddaughter, Darcie McLeod. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Brandon Regional Health Centre, especially Dr. S. Dhalla, as well as the many home care workers for their exceptional care and gentleness toward Alice and her family. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held this summer. HARPE: Victoria (Vicky) Harpe (née Lozinski) was born May 19, 1918 in Calder, Saskatchewan. She was raised on a farm by her parents, Zenka and Paul, along with her two brothers, Harry and John and her four sisters, Anne, Nellie, Jessie and Pearl. Her parents immigrated from the Ukraine and homesteaded at St. Phillips near Kamsack, Saskatchewan. In her early years, Victoria enjoyed horseback riding and listening to her brother John play his guitar. She also enjoyed embroidery and needlework. Vicky was a seamstress and homemaker for many years. She married Wesley Albin Harpe and had three children, Melvin, Carol and Peter. During her life she lived in many places, including several communities in Northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and finally in Brandon. Victoria resided at Rideau Park for nearly twenty years. In these years, she made a long-term friend in Dorothy Snidanko and truly enjoyed her company. She enjoyed bowling and won many trophies for this activity. She received great care and attention from the staff at Rideau Park, for which the family is most grateful. Victoria was predeceased by her parents, Zenka and Paul, her husband Wesley, her brothers, Harry and John, her sisters, Anne, Nellie and Josie, and her son, Melvin. She is survived by her sister Pearl Armstrong (Livonia, MI), daughter Carol Dube (Andy) The Pas, son Peter (Barbara) Brandon, five grandchildren: Cheryl (Dale), Jacqueline, Abbey, Sarah and Erik and four great grandchildren: Dawn, Dayna, Michaela and Markus. Funeral service will be held at Rideau Park, 525 Victoria Avenue East, on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. with Arlene Robertson of First Presbyterian Church officiating. HICKS: Valerie Mae Hicks (née Sherb), July 3, 1950 – February 15, 2007. Valerie, beloved wife of Ross, mother of Dallas (Lynnai), grandmother of Dalen, daughter of Vi Sherb and predeceased by father, Stan. Val was born and raised in Brandon and passed away on the morning of February 15, 2007 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. She touched the lives of many people and animals and will be greatly missed by all. A private family service will be held. HALL: Solomon Hall, Wambdi Wicasta - Eagle Man (October 17, 1930 - September 20, 2008). On Saturday, September 20, 2008 Solomon passed away suddenly at his place of residence here in Sioux Valley. He leaves to mourn his wife of 55 years, Mary Hall; his children: Karen Sinclair (Tom Petrie), Elaine Hall-Pratt (Ken Pratt), Ramona Hall (Paul Rosario), Louise Hall (J.J.), Frank Hall, Jo Ann Hall-Chalmers (Rob Chalmers), Ethel Hall (Garry Standing Crow), Mark Hall (Caroline Hall), Robert Hall, Robin Hall (Rhonda Hall), Late Ron Hall's Family Members - Nathan Hall, Jamie Hall & Terri Lynn Silva. Adopted children: Sandra Storm - Brandon, MB, Art & Merideth Blue - Carberry, MB, Sid Harris - B.C., Dave Courchene Jr. – Sagkeeng, Ken Courchene – Sagkeeng, Rick Nicola, Maine, USA, Hon. Eric Robinson - Winnipeg, MB, Danny Pelletier - Regina, SK. Grandchildren – 23, great grandchildren – 39, and his surviving sister, Mabel Scherr. Solomon was predeceased by his parents, Thomas & Louisa Hall, brothers: William Mini Jr., William Hall, Abraham Mini, Archie Hall, Richard Hall, Ivan Hall, two sisters: Gladys Mancuso, Ethel Tacan; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Solomon was a Korean War Veteran and he served his country for 3 years. He had a strong work ethic right to the very end - even with his failing health he continued to keep himself occupied. He was a labourer doing farm work in his earlier years, carpentry work until he was injured at work and was classified as disabled for life. He was a very Traditional man and learned and followed these ways up to the very end:
In the mid 1970’s he was given a dream from the Creator that he was to revive the Sacred Sundance that had been laid to rest in Sioux Valley in 1937.
He had many mentors that assisted him in his journey, Seven Arrows, Tom Yellow Tail from Pryor, Montana, Stanley Looking Horse, Pete Catches, Joe Flying By from South Dakota.
Hunka Brothers: Charlie Wise Spirit, Ted Bison from Oklahoma, Arthur Amiotte from Custer, South Dakota.
He revived the Sundance in 1980 for 24 years that continued by his son, the late Ron Hall, and completed by his grandson, Mark Hall and the Red Blanket Men in June 2008.
He was very instrumental in passing on his knowledge and teaching to many young men who became the Red Blanket Men.
He assisted the communities of Sisseton, South Dakota, Mandaree, North Dakota, High Prairie, Alberta in reviving the Sundance within their communities.
One journey that he strongly believed in and was involved with was the Repatriation of our Ancestors from National Museums and Archives. When these Repatriation Ceremonies were held in Sisseton, South Dakota he assisted wherever he was needed.
He went to Yorkton, SK every May long weekend to do ceremonies for their traditionally adopted families of the Late Dan Pelletier.
Him and his wife travelled to the Sacred Paha Sapa yearly making their prayer offering at Bear Butte in South Dakota. Prayer flags were hung every year for his family, relatives, community of Sioux Valley and the Dakota Nation.
He strongly believed that we had to teach our Youth their language, culture, ceremonies and history. It is imperative that our Youth have their and know who they are as Dakota, Anishinabe, Cree, First Nation people.
From the time of his dream, Solomon was true to his Dakota Traditions, feeding the people and gave whatever he had, remaining poor himself. Many people assisted him throughout these years. Living this way is bold but it leads to a beautiful after life.
As a carrier of the Sacred pipe brought by the White Buffalo Calf Maiden to the Dakota Nation. Solomon was laid to rest on a buffalo robe in his tipi.
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Katherine Pettipas and Associates at the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg, MB. The presentation of the lodge of Wambdi Wicasta was a very emotional time. The permanent installation of the Hall Family History and Tipi in a Museum which is on display across Canada and World Wide.
His knowledge of ceremonies that have been passed to many who were in attendance at his funeral. The family would like to thank the many people who have helped in their time of bereavement.
