JAMES: Audrey "Joan" James (nee Bicknell) of Brandon, beloved Mother, Sister, Aunt and friend, passed away peacefully at her residence, Fairview Personal Care Home on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at the age of 69 years.

Joan was born in Brandon on the 24th of June 1937, the sixth child of Oswald Bicknell and Mary Madeline Bicknell (nee Hogan). Joan received her education, both academic and music, at St. Michael’s Academy. After graduation, Joan took a job as a secretary at Camp Shilo, where she met and married David James. After their marriage in June of 1964, they took a transfer in the Army to Germany. While in Germany their first of three children was born, Christopher Cale. Returning to Canada in 1966, they welcomed another addition to their family, Lisa Marie. Twelve months later their last child, Catherine Anne, arrived. In the summer of 1977, Joan and kids moved back to Brandon.

Joan had a deep devotion to God and St. Augustine’s Church, a lifetime member of the Catholic Women’s League and a Catechism teacher for 25 years.

Joan spent every Friday at the mall having lunch and coffee with friends and getting her hair done at Hair Today. Joan was a very social person; she had many friends and kept in touch regularly with many of her girlfriends from school.

Joan had fifty years of pain and suffering, the last thirty-five years confined to a wheelchair. We are thankful she is free of the chair and her ailments.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, Ozzie and Madge, and her sister Madeline. Joan is survived by her son Chris (Laurel Robinson, Abbi and Piper) granddaughters Rachel and Lauren; daughter Lisa (Lorne Freeman, Levi and Stephanie) grandchildren Megan and Blair; daughter Cathy and Aaron Rookes, grandsons Christian and Jaden; sisters Iris, Marguerite and Noreen; brothers Ken (Vivian), Ted (Maryann), Terry (Judy) and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A Prayer Vigil for Joan was held on Sunday, February 18th at the Brockie Donovan Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church on Monday, February 19th. Interment was at the Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, 327-4th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 5B7 or to a charity of choice.

JOHNSTON: Donald James It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Donald James Johnston, on 30 June 2008, at the age of 90 years, following a brief illness. A native of Brandon, Dad was the son of the late George and Edith Johnston. He was raised on a farm north of the city, very close to the now defunct community of Carnegie. He attended the Powerville Elementary School, at the time located in the Rural Municipality of Daly and later, Forrest High School. A gifted mechanic, Dad began his vocation by enrolling in a community technical program. Graduating in 1939 at the top of his class, he was immediately hired by Canadian Motors and worked as an automotive mechanic before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940. Prior to being posted overseas in 1942, Dad maintained training aircraft at the Brandon airport, at the time an integral part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He served three years overseas as a member of the renowned 418 Squadron (City of Edmonton), servicing the Dehavilland Mosquito fighter-bomber. The end of hostilities in 1945 saw Dad repatriated back to Canada where, as a civilian, he again found employment at Canadian Motors. Later, an opportunity allowed Dad to accept a position with the Manitoba Telephone System, where he remained until his retirement in 1979. Dad will be lovingly remembered by Jessie, his wife of 59 years, and his children, Diane (Peter) Boychuk, Elliot Lake, Ontario and George (Susan), Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
