RAMSAY: Esther Alberta Ramsay (née Neufeld), beloved wife of John D. Ramsay of Brandon, passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at the age of 90 years. Esther was born on September 13, 1915 at Rosthern, Saskatchewan. She was raised in several communities throughout Saskatchewan and completed Grade 11 at Canadian Junior College in Alberta. In 1949, Esther married John D. Ramsay and moved to the farm in Brookdale, Manitoba where they raised their family. In 1981, Esther and John retired to Brandon. Esther belonged to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Brandon where she was involved in many church activities. Other interests included genealogy, sewing, needlework, reading and travelling. Surviving is Esther’s husband, John D.; sons, Robert (Marty) and Bruce (Estelle) Ramsay; daughters, Phyllis (Bob) Willauer, Pat (Jim) Selman and Judy Ramsay; six grandchildren
; one great grandchild; special friend, Charlie Partridge. Her brother, Edwin Neufeld predeceased Esther. Funeral service for Esther was held at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Rick Harwood and Roy Jamieson officiating. Interment followed in the Riverside Cemetery, Neepawa, Manitoba. Pallbearers were: Phyllis Willauer, Pat Selman, Bob Ramsay, Bruce Ramsay, Judy Ramsay and Charlie Partridge. In lieu of flowers, donations, in memory of Esther, may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation (Palliative Care), 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
REID: Mary Jane Reid was born on April 1, 1920 and passed away on August 14, 2008 at Fairview Home in Brandon. She was raised in the Strathallan and Bluevale districts near Boissevain. After completing normal school in Brandon in 1940, she taught in rural schools at Lyonshall and Nesbitt and then in Brandon and Winnipeg. She furthered her education at summer school sessions in Toronto and attended Penn State University where she received her degree in art education. She worked for two years in Winnipeg and then moved to West Vancouver where she taught high school art until her retirement. Mary did volunteer work with Canada Immigration in Vancouver and enjoyed attending music concerts and art exhibitions. In 2000, she returned to Brandon to live at Riverheights Terraces and later at Fairview Home. Mary's dedication to her art students was maintained right into her later years. The walls of her home always displayed some favourite students' works! Those who knew and admired her, also saw her artistic side displayed In her stylish form of dress and definite, independent manner. Mary is survived by her brother Tom (Joyce) Reid of Brandon; nieces Sharon (Rick) Oakden, Brandon, Marilyn (Ray) Dyck, Peterborough, Ontario; nephews Tom (Helen) Latimer, Boissevain and Jim (Sandra) Reid, Winnipeg, Barbara Latimer, Cochrane, Alberta, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Catherine; brothers Charles, Andrew, Cameron, Ernest; sisters: Elsie Latimer and Ethel Forrest, brothers-law Robert Latimer, Robert Forrest and nephew Bob Latimer.
RELF: It is with deep sorrow the family announces the passing of our mother, Evelyn Relf, on July 4, 2008 at the Assiniboine Centre. Evelyn was born August 1, 1911, at Grenfell, SK. She was the eldest child of Frank and Irene Stock. The family moved to Brandon when Evelyn was five years old. Evelyn spent all her life in Brandon. After finishing school she worked at Yaeger's Furs until she married Ron Relf of Beausejour, MB in 1930. Together they raised five children. Evelyn was a devoted Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and friend. She was an excellent homemaker. Evelyn's home on 21st Street and the cabin at Clear Lake were where the family gathered for fun and fellowship. Evelyn's hobbies included drawing and painting and she loved to give her art work to family and friends. She was an avid gardener and loved to be outside working in her beautiful perennial gardens. Evelyn's weekly bridge game with friends was a favourite pastime. Evelyn enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to travel throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and even on a trip to Spain with her daughters. Evelyn had a beautiful singing voice and a talent for playing the organ. She sang for many years with the Barbershop Belles. She was a long-time member of the Prince Alexandra Tech Chapter of the IODE. Evelyn was a member of First United, then Central United Church. She was also a member of the Rotary Club. Evelyn was pre-deceased by her parents Frank and Irene Stock, her husband Ron, her sons Don and Raymond Relf, her son-in-law Norman Breen, and her brothers Wilfred, Murray and Doug Stock. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Elaine Breen, of Brandon, and Dolores (Barry) Rost, of The Villages, FL, as well as her son Robert (Georgia) Relf of Calgary, AB. Also surviving are daughters-in-law Betty Relf of Brandon, Betty-Anne Relf of Lethbridge, AB, and sister-in-law Violet Halowinski of Beausejour, MB. Evelyn had fifteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed. The funeral service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, July 10, 2008 with Pastor Gordon Stock of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta officiating. RICE: Shahna Bronwen, beloved daughter of John and Barbara, wife of Dean Topolniski and mother of Andrew passed away at Brandon Regional Health Centre on July 1, 2008. Shahna’s long and brave battle with cancer is ended but the love we have for her will never end. Shahna was born in 1970 in Ottawa. She moved with her family to Edmonton in 1971 for a year before settling in Brandon in 1972. Except for a short summer period when she worked for the NRC Biodiagnostic Centre in Winnipeg and for the first two years of her life, Shahna has been resident in Brandon. She attended school at J.R.Reid and Vincent Massey and subsequently took two degrees in Science at Brandon University. Her second degree was in Computer Science and her employment after University was first in the Information Technology department at Meyers, Norris and Penny followed by the Information Technology department at City Hall. Shahna’s great compassion for our companion animals began at an early age. Shahna began volunteer work at the Humane Society but recognised the need for even more capacity in Brandon to deal with homeless animals. She devoted her financial resources and personal effort to rescuing abandoned, homeless creatures with this culminating in formally incorporating Funds For Furry Friends in association with her long-time close friends Dana Grove, D’Arcy Barker, Cheryl Yeadon, Teresa Truszynski and Theresa vanHoof. Along with the dogs Shahna rescued before the formal creation of Furry Friends, almost a thousand dogs have found new homes through her efforts and those of her colleagues. Her long telephone conversations with Dana about the rescue kept Shahna involved even when she was bedridden. Shahna’s contribution to animal welfare was recognized by the International Fund for Animal Welfare at a dinner in Ottawa in 2006 that Shahna could not attend because of her illness at the time. Shahna’s own rescued dogs, horses and cats were a great passion throughout her life. Her earliest loves were horses that she rode and trained with natural ability. The last few years, during her illness, she has spent training dogs and one of her proudest times was in the summer of 2007 when she had her dog Ricki qualify for the national agility championships in southern Ontario. She attended and competed in spite of the discomfort of the drive to the venue and she delighted in showing the action photos of her dog. A highlight of the competition for her was to carry the flag for the Manitoba contingent. Shahna continued to support the work at the Humane Society and her great friend Tracy Munn spent hours with her during her illness, a consolation both Shahna and her family deeply appreciate. Left to mourn Shahna are her sisters Cynthia (with Brian and their children Iain and Amy) Found of Ottawa and Sherri (Clint and son Caspian) Rice of Winnipeg. Also grieving the loss of Shahna are grandparents, Fred and Marion Rice and aunts and uncles Jane Kowalski, Tim (Cathy) Rice, Tom (Gail) Rice and Annette (Ken) Pole of London, Ontario and mother and father-in-law Marj and Walt Topolniski of Minnedosa. Shahna was predeceased by her grandparents Hilda and James Shaw of Brandon. Among her animal friends, her special dog Ricki will always wait by the window for her return. Throughout her long struggle with Breast Cancer, Shahna became indebted to many health care providers. Especially, she and her family want to say how much the support of Dr. Duplooy and the nurses of the chemotherapy unit, and very specially Karen, meant to us all. Dr. Lindsay of the Western Clinic and the Radiation Oncologists of Cancer Care Manitoba in Winnipeg were always very quick to respond to Shahna’s needs and we thank them for their empathy and efforts. Many more, too numerous to mention, showed deep concern and care in Shahna’s treatment and we thank you all. Funeral service will be held at St Matthews Cathedral, 403 – 13th Street, Brandon on Saturday, July 5th at 2:00PM. with Rev. Michael Skliros and Fr. Don Bernhardt officiating. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, Shahna and her family would deeply appreciate donations to Funds For Furry Friends to a fund designated as "Shahna’s Shelter of Hope" that is dedicated to supporting the temporary housing of rescued companion animals from the Brandon pound. ROBERTS: Mrs. Irene Beatrice Roberts of Brandon, beloved wife of the late John Leonard Roberts, passed away at the Rideau Park Personal Care Home on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the age of 97 years. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Rosewood Memorial Gardens on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 2:00 with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood of Central United Church officiating. REIBIN: Patricia Ann (née Peterkin) left us suddenly on Friday, April 25, 2008 in Brandon, Manitoba. Pat is survived by and will be sadly missed by her loving husband, William Attridge, her daughter, Shalane Esau (Chris) of St. John’s, Newfoundland and son Brandon Reibin of Brandon. Pat is the much loved daughter of Doris Peterkin MacLean, the late Robert Peterkin and step-daughter of Gordon MacLean. She is also survived by her sister Penny Isles (Richard) of California and is aunt to Kenny, Courtney and Kristen Isles. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Kristoffer, Rylan and Spencer along with many aunts, uncles and cousins in Kingston, Ontario. As an animal lover, Pat will be missed greatly by her four spaniel puppies. A memorial service for the immediate family will be held on Friday, May 2, 2008.
ROBINS: Lorne McGregor Robins. Quietly in the early morning of Monday, March 31, 2008, Lorne passed away at the Assiniboine Centre, at the age of 85. Lorne was the husband of the late Isabelle Robins (1997), dear father to Garry (Sandra), beloved grandfather to Greg and Dana. Lorne is also survived by his last sibling, Ivy (Norval) Young of Winnipeg. Sisters and brothers-in-law Bruce and June Taggart, Jack (Jaye) Little of Brandon, also mourn Lorne’s passing. Lorne was predeceased by his sisters and brothers Molly Baker, Teen Yule, Ken and Earl Robins. A life long resident of Brandon, Lorne was born to Archie and Teenie Robins on June 27, 1922. He kept close ties with cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A walk through the mall with Lorne meant stops and visits with many people. Lorne served overseas during W.W. II reaching the rank of Sergeant. His working career was with C.P. Railway as a switchman, retiring after 40 years in 1987. Many night shifts were spent outside in the cold Manitoba winter. Lorne will be remembered for his caring nature, love of family and friends, love of animals, love of the outdoors and anything mechanical. Over the last few years Lorne enjoyed new friendships at Riverheights Terrace. Garry and Sandra would like to say a special thank you to staff on 3rd floor Palliative Care, Assiniboine Centre. Your support and compassion to both Lorne and ourselves will always be remembered. REID: Mr. Cecil "Pat" Robertson Reid, beloved husband of Irene (Gray), father of Louanne and Lane, father-in-law to Colleen, step-grandfather to Carrie (Wade) and Chris (Leann). Born on December 10, 1917, Pat passed away at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Brandon, Manitoba on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the age of 90 years. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
ROBSON: John Lionel "Leo" Robson of Brandon passed away peacefully at his residence at Fairview Personal Care Home on Sunday, February 17, 2008 at the age of 93 years. John was born on July 26, 1914 in Chesley, Manitoba. He farmed in the Chesley, Wawanesa and Chater areas and married Hazel Marie Rogers on October 11, 1947 in Arden, Manitoba. Together, they raised four children, Lyle, Joan, Raymond and Gale. Leo operated a dairy farm in Chater until 1968, then worked at the Brandon Mental Health Centre until his retirement in 1979. At this time, Leo worked with Al Campbell building homes as well as with the Seniors For Seniors program. Leo enjoyed curling, baseball, Barbershoppers, the choir at Central United Church, carpentry, golf and many various travel adventures with his wife, Hazel. Included were trips to Hawaii, Victoria, BC, winter stays in Weslaco, Texas, 6 weeks in Australia, Branson, a bus tour of Canada’s East Coast and many golf excursions. Leo was a great lover of all people and music. He helped everyone he could with fix it jobs around their homes or would just sit and talk with them and share a laugh. His love of music was evident everywhere he went as he joined many choirs. He enjoyed performing with the Brandon Barbershoppers group, the Central United Church choir and sang many solos at weddings, funerals and many special occasions during his life. He was very much a family man, always wanting to visit with his children or grandchildren. These visits would include numerous board games, card games or a competitive game of golf. We had many a curling bonspiel with Dad as well. He loved family reunions and used any excuse to get everyone together for a celebration. He had many friends for he measured a person’s wealth by the number of friends you acquire and not by how much money you have. In this sense, Leo was a very wealthy man. Leo considered Fairview his home in his later years. They will truly miss his golden voice and his warm and witty quips. Leo was predeceased by his wife Hazel, brother Bill Robson, brother Ken Robson, sister Ethel McLean, sister-in-law Norma Robson, brother-in-law Jack MacDonald, brother-in-law Ken McLean and son-in-law Bob Lawson. He will be lovingly missed by his brother Aleck Robson and sister Daisy MacDonald and his children Lyle and Pat Robson, Joan and Rick Wainwright, Raymond and Cheryl Robson, Gale Lawson and special friend Warren Wotton. Leo will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Shawn Robson, Marty (Erika) Wainwright, Michael Wainwright (Jenn), Jodelle Robson (Ryan), Jeffery Robson (Janique) and great grandchild Danica Robson. A Service of Remembrance was held for Leo at the Central United Church on Thursday, February 21, 2008 with Rev. Shannon McCarthy officiating. Interment took place in the Chater Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Leo may be made to the Fairview Home Foundation, 1351-13th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4S6 or to a charity of choice.
REDFERN: Elizabeth Eleanor Redfern of Rideau Park Personal Care Home, beloved wife of the late Henry Redfern, passed away at her residence on Friday, December 14, 2007 at the age of 87 years. Funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood of Central United Church officiating. A private family interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. RIGBY: Allan Rigby passed away peacefully on November 24, 2007 at the Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Allan was born on May 31, 1916 in Walpole, Saskatchewan to George and Elizabeth (née McDougall). After serving in the Army, Allan moved to Brandon, where he met and married Marjorie (née Peacock). He is survived by his wife Marjorie and daughter Linda. He was predeceased by another daughter in infancy. Allan is also survived by his sister Peggy (Steve) Kostiuk, nephew Don and family, several nieces of Marjorie’s and by many friends. Special thanks to the staff at Rideau Park for their care during Allan’s last year. Also to niece Joan Oscar and friends Charlie and Bonnie Muller. The Funeral Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Charlie Muller officiating. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery.
