ROUTLEDGE: William Douglas (Doug). It is with sadness we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather on November 24, 2007 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, MB. Doug passed away from complications resulting from a long-term illness. His wife Edna, of 63 years, was by his side. Doug was born September 10, 1919 and he was raised on a farm near Lenore. He served in the Air Force. Doug and Edna farmed at Lenore for 27 years and then moved to Brandon. Doug worked at Stylerite Stores as the Assistant Manager for a number of years. He was very active with the First Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis Club and Seniors for Seniors. The last few years they spent living in Village Green. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife Edna (Smith), two daughters, Arlie (Vern) Haakonson and Darlene (Merle) Funk, four grandchildren
, Terry Gould, Treena Gould, Natasha Funk and Tyler Funk. His brother Elgin (Irene) Routledge, sister Merle (Jack) Mooney and his many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and May Routledge, his brother Glen and sister-in-law Phyllis Routledge. The Funeral Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, November 30, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with The Rev. Dr. Dale Woods of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Viewing will be held prior to the service at 12:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens followed by lunch at Seniors for Seniors, 311 Park Ave. East. ROME: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother and Grandmother, Reita Rome, with her family at her side on May 9, 2009, at Fairview Personal Care Home. She was predeceased by her husband Morley, ten siblings, her parents, Reginald and Flossie Doig and two great-grandchildren. Left to mourn are her children, Dennis (Karen) Rome, Linda (Ron) Krushel, Sandra (Jim) McLean and her grandchildren, Ryan (Kim), Red Deer, Reagan (April), Brandon, Aaron (Adrian), Brandon, Ashton (McKenzie), Brandon, Troy (Heather), Toronto. Tracey (Shane), Brandon, Scott (Roseanne), Airdrie, Pamela (Dennis), Treherne, Sheila (Jeff), Wawanesa, Shelley (Louis), Dunrea, Trevor (Suzanne), Toronto. Also left to mourn are eleven great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Marjorie Oliver, brother-in-law Lloyd Groves. She was born November 30th, 1924 in Glenboro where she grew up and in later years moved to Winnipeg. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Ottawa in the finger printing department. She married Morley Rome on June 11, 1946. They moved to the farm at Nesbitt where they raised a family and worked together for fifty two years. In the fall of 1999 Reita moved to Brandon where she enjoyed "condo living". Due to declining health she moved to Fairview Home in April 2008. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #3 Branch in Brandon. Her interests centered around her family. She was always eager to attend many events that family was involved in, including baseball, hockey, graduations, Christmas concerts, family weddings, reunions, and musical events. She enjoyed camping, playing cards, sewing, needlework and crafts. She enjoyed curling in the winter and golf in the summer with her friends. She enjoyed summers in Killarney with campground friends and winters in Mesa, Arizona. Active pallbearers were Scott Van Den Bussche, Trevor Van Den Bussche, Troy Krushel, Ryan Rome, Reagan Rome, Aaron Rome, Ashton Rome and Gerry Rome. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Central United Church, Brandon. Donations in memory of Reita may be made to your charity of choice.
RAHNEFELD: Gunther Wolfgang Rahnefeld, beloved husband of Patricia, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Friday, April 3, 2009 at the age of 79 years. Gunther was born on November 21, 1929 in Passaic, New Jersey. He attended school (grade and high school) in Clifton, New Jersey and then attended Montana State College at Boseman, Montana. He received a Bachelor of Science in animal husbandry. Gunther then went into the U.S. Airforce for two years. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1960 with completion of a Masters Degree and Ph.D. in Animal Genetics. Gunther began working at the Brandon Research Centre as an Animal Geneticist in 1961. He worked there for 32 years. Most of the research was done with beef cattle. Gunther was a member of the Kinsmen Club and the Brandon Retriever Club. He enjoyed dog breeding and training dogs for field trials. His dog, Ginger, won the U.S. National Field Trial Championship in 1987 and his dog, Spook, won the Canadian National Field Trial Championship in 1993. Gunther also loved gardening, especially gladioli and lilies. Gunther is survived by his wife Patricia Teegarden Rahnefeld, daughter Lorelei Rahnefeld of La Spezia, Italy, granddaughter Sabrina Spinello, Italy, son-in-law Salvatore Spinello, Italy, son Karl Rahnefeld of Winnipeg, MB, daughter-in-law Wendy Rahnefeld, Winnipeg, and daughter Heidi Rahnefeld of Lake Havasu City, AZ. Gunther was predeceased by his mother, Martha Rosa Baumgartel Rahnefeld (1903-1984) and by his father, Ferdinand Fred Rahnefeld (1902-1987), both of Reichenbach, Germany. A time of visitation will be held at the Brockie Donovan Funeral Home, 332-8th Street, Brandon, on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, April 9, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. A Celebration of Gunther’s Life will be held at a later date. RUDNISKI, Kazmiere 1930 –2009: It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Kaz Rudniski on January 8th, 2009 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. He was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. Kaz will be forever loved and missed by his wife Peg of fifty-seven years; daughters Christine (James), Lori (Warren) and son-in-law, Lyle Redman. "Poppy" will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Kim, Brad, Daniel, Carleigh, Jimmy, Whitney, Zachary, Delaney; step grandchildren Allan and Tamara; great grandchildren, Grace, Abby, and Pilot. Also surviving him are brothers Ted, Steve and sisters Eliza and Mary. He was predeceased by his parents Mike and Jessie; his daughter Patricia and his brother Stan. Kaz was born and raised in Basswood, Manitoba. In 1951, he married Peggy Duncan and they farmed for 56 years in the Moline district. The first year of their married life was spent in Toronto where he worked at Dehaveland Aircraft. Kaz's first love was farming, but in his later years, he enjoyed traveling in the winter months to Arizona, Texas, and Florida with his wife. He greatly enjoyed jamming with musician friends and he and his fiddle were frequent participants at many musical events. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Brandon Assiniboine Hospital for the wonderful care he received. A Memorial Service will be held at the Rivers United Church on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Glenna Beauchamp officiating. A private family interment will take place at the Rapid City Cemetery

ROMANOWSKI: Mr. Stanley Romanowski, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully at Fairview Home in Brandon on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the age of 94 years. He will be dearly missed, but his heart will beat on through his wife Anna Romanowski; daughter Julie (Paul) Huys of Brandon; son Alex of Calgary, AB and son Eugene (Wendy) of Kamloops, B.C. He will also be missed, but live on through his loving grandchildren, Liz (Gordon), Tina (Mark), Mathew, Lian, Stefani, Michael, Amanda and Nicole. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, 327 – 4th Street, on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. A time of viewing will take place prior to the service starting at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held at the Brandon Cemetery
followed by a reception at St. Augustine’s Square.
ROUTLEDGE: Edna Ann (Smith). It is with sadness we announce the passing of our dear mother and grandmother on December 6, 2008 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon. Edna passed away peacefully with her daughters Arlie and Darlene by her side. Edna was born October 28, 1920 and raised on a farm near Lenore. During the Second World War Edna worked at a factory in Ajax, Ontario. Edna and Doug were married on November 14, 1944. They lived in Winnipeg after their marriage. In 1945 they moved to Lenore where they farmed for 27 years. In 1972 they retired from the farm and moved to Brandon. In the next 12 years Edna worked at the Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was very active with Seniors for Seniors and volunteered with the organization for years. She kept busy doing crafts and always had a project on the go. The last 5 years were spent living at Village Green. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters Arlie (Vern) Haakonson and Darlene (Merle) Funk. Her four grandchildren Terry Gould, Treena Gould, Natasha Funk, and Tyler Funk. Her sisters Mary Bater, Wilda Higgins, Margaret Quinn, Viola Ellis and her brother Russel (Dorothy) Smith. Her brother-in-law Elgin (Irene) Routledge, and sister-in-law Merle (Jack) Mooney. Also her many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Doug, son-in-law Gordon Gould, her parents William and Elizabeth Smith, brother Harry and wife Ann, brother Alfred and wife Elizabeth, brother Wes and wife Jean, brother Sam and wife Mary, brother-in-laws Llew Bater, Stan Higgins, Bill Quinn, Jack Ellis, Glen Routledge and wife Phyllis, father and mother-in-law Harry and May Routledge, nieces and nephews Lloyd Smith, Geraldine (Smith) Noble, Velma (Smith) Good and Jon Ellis. The funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332 - 8th St., on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Arlene Robertson of First Presbyterian Church officiating. RAVEN: Lorna Cavell (née Shillington) of Brandon, MB (aged 78) passed away peacefully at Fairview Home, with her daughters by her side, on November 24, 2008 following a lengthy battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Her strong faith and the wonderful care she received at Fairview Home helped her to remain positive throughout.
She was predeceased by her husband Wesley Raven (1991), her parents Edward (1970) and Mary (1981) Shillington, her brothers Wally (1987), Clarence (1988), and twin brother Lorne (1995).
She is survived by her daughter, Muriel (Wayne) Stocki and granddaughter, Janissa (Michael) Cassells of Brandon; daughter Mavis Self of Winnipeg and granddaughter Bree Self of Thompson, five great-grandchildren (Michael, Callie, Kaitlynn, Alex and Samara); sister Audrey Hallet of Edmonton, AB; brother Ivan (Nancy) Shillington of Kindersley, SK and numerous nephews and nieces.
Lorna was born in Birtle, MB on December 24, 1929. She was educated in Binscarth, joined the Manitoba Telephone System in 1947 and moved to Minnedosa in 1950. At the age of 22, she became the youngest chief operator in charge of a dial telephone system exchange in the province.
She later moved to Brandon where she met the love of her life. On June 23, 1953, she married Wesley Oliver Raven and shortly thereafter the couple moved to Lynn Lake, MB where their two daughters were born. They later settled in Brandon where they operated Raven's Fish and Chips for 10 years. After sale of the restaurant, Lorna worked at K-Mart for 21 years, retiring in 1991 due to ill health.
Lorna enjoyed family celebrations, visiting with friends, travelling, gardening, playing cards and doing puzzles.
The funeral service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens with Mona Franklin officiating. Pallbearers were Warren Hallet, Darren Hallet, Kelvin Shillington, Brian Giefer, Michael Cassells and Chris Green. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Kennedy, Shea Kennedy and Kevin Shillington. Diane Brown delivered the reflections.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the front-line staff on the first floor of Fairview Nursing home for ensuring our mother had quality of life throughout her final years. It was the constant caring and compassion she received that made her illness bearable.
ROACH: Henry Joseph (Joe) Roach passed away peacefully at the Assiniboine Centre on November 19, 2008 at 70 years of age. Joe was born on January 18, 1938 in New Waterford, Nova Scotia. He is survived by his wife Carmen, children Tracy (Doug) and Kevin (Janice), four grandchildren, and one great-great grandson, all of Brandon. Also surviving are sisters, Tellie (John) of Brandon, Johnina of Ontario and Margret of Nova Scotia. Donations can be made in Joe’s memory to the Kidney Foundation, 42 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B2. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge all of the wonderful care extended to Joe by Dr. B.R. Riche, Dr. S. Gordon, and all of the nursing staff, nursing students and teachers on A3, who attended to him. In keeping with the family’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
SLATOR: Alice Louisa Slator (Bartlett) passed away at the Assiniboine Centre on Saturday, October 7, 2006 after a short illness. Alice was born January 23, 1917 and raised on the family farm in the Glanton/Gourlay district. On November 7, 1946 she married Donald Slator and, together they farmed in the Forrest area. Alice was very active within the Forrest community. She helped assemble many quilts for the Rugbyettes; did sewing and knitting for the Red Cross; was a member of the Forrest Legion and was a leader for the Forrest 4-H Home Economics Club. For many years, Alice also repaired dolls and made clothes for them to be distributed in Christmas Cheer Registry hampers. Curling was one of her favourite sports. Also, once they retired to Brandon in 1985, she enjoyed bowling at the Recreation Lanes and playing cards with the South End Community Centre Seniors Group. Alice was predeceased by her husband Donald in 1995; her parents, William and Dolly Bartlett and by brothers, Everett (Scotty) and Cyril. She will be sadly missed by her son, Harold and wife Shirley; grandsons, Cameron and friend Lisa and great grandchildren, Donald and Jessica; Jason and wife Kim and great granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Rylee and granddaughter, Tammy and friend Kris. She also leaves to mourn her sister, Phyllis Clark and brother, Doug Bartlett. A graveside service was held at the Brandon Cemetery
on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. Mona Franklin officiated. Friends may make a contribution in memory of Alice to the charity of their choice.
SQUAIR, Irvina "Irva" Eleanor: Irva, beloved wife of the late James Squair, died peacefully on August 21, 2007 at Hillcrest Place in Brandon, MB. Irva was born December 19, 1911, to parents Dr. & Mrs. T.I.E. Rutledge in Carberry, MB. When she was six years old she moved with her family to Swan River, MB where her father was the first veterinarian in the Swan River Valley. She loved to tell stories of those childhood years. After completing High School she graduated from Normal School in Winnipeg and accepted a teaching position in Ossawa S.D. north of Reaburn, where she met her future husband, Jim Squair. She taught in Renwer, MB for 2 years before returning to marry Jim in 1937. Their life together was filled with love, laughter, hard work, family and friends. They moved from the original Squair family homestead in 1955 when Irva accepted a teaching position in Marquette. A move to Warren in 1967 was prompted by the closure of one-room schools marking the end of an era in rural Manitoba. She taught Grade 3 in Warren until retiring in 1973. Irva later lived in Winnipeg before moving to Brandon to be closer to family. Irva was a woman of great strength and fortitude with an ability to deal with difficult situations. She influenced many lives through her years of teaching, but her greatest impact was on the lives of her children and grandchildren. Her love for her husband and children was always foremost in her life. Memories of her sense of humour, love of nice clothes and wonderful home cooking will always be with us. Irva was predeceased by husband Jim in 1975, parents (Doc) and Lily (Elizabeth) Rutledge, sister Lila (Bill) McMillan, son-in-law Stuart Granger, sisters-in-law Jean (Alex) Masson, Maggie (Andrew) Colquhoun, Elsie (Will) Round, Beth (Bert) Forsberg, Mina (Will) McKnight, Polly (Bob) Marley, Dodie (George) Bailey, Nan (Had) McKinley, Millie (Bill) Cordy, Edith (Bill) Delbridge and brother-in-law Frank (Nancy) Squair. Irva was the last surviving member in her generation in both the Rutledge and Squair families. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Barbara (Mitch) Hamm and Diane Granger; grandchildren Cathy Grain (Rob Boyd), Robert (Teresa) Grain, Joan (Bob) Hall, James (Angie) Varley; great grandchildren Derek and Mark Grain and Aiden Hall. She is also survived by dear friend Patricia Varley and numerous nieces and nephews. Irva’s family wishes to extend warm thanks to all the staff at Hillcrest Place for their wonderful, compassionate care. Their genuine caring is so appreciated. Interment will take place at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 2007 in the Meadow Lea Cemetery

SPROULE: Elizabeth (Betty), January 1, 1915 - April 7, 2007. It is with the greatest sorrow that the family wishes to announce the passing of Elizabeth Sproule (nee Haberstock) at Fairview Home in Brandon, Manitoba on Saturday, April 7, 2007. Betty was born in Brandon, MB on January 1, 1915 to the joy of her parents Henry Haberstock and Phillipine (nee Reihl) Haberstock. Betty attended David Livingston School in Brandon. Betty worked at the Lyciam Café until the age of 19. It is at this time that she married Charles William Sproule. Betty and Charles remained happily married until Charles’ passing in 1992. Betty and Charles moved into her family homestead where she remained until shortly before her passing. Betty’s life was devoted to her family and her home, and Betty spent her entire life making sure that all members of her family were looked after and loved. In the early days money was short and Betty learned very quickly to make do with whatever her hands could make. This was very fortunate as it wasn’t too long before a new family was in place. Betty was blessed to have had four children, Allan, Robert, Freddy and Carol. Sadly, Allan and Freddy both passed away in early childhood. Betty cherished her children and was equally as happy in subsequent years when they were married and had children of their own. Betty devoted more time and love than one would think possible to her children and grandchildren. In between caring for these special people, time was even found to pour a foundation for the basement of the house before Charlie got home from work, or complete the gardening, baking and canning! In about 1965 grandson, Garry, came to live in Brandon with Betty and Charles. This was a special situation in which Betty responded with her well known love and devotion. Garry grew up in the house under the direction of Betty and Charles and in these recent years became her primary care giver. Garry returned all the love and devotion to her, that she had given him as he was growing up. Betty’s family came first in her life and all those that knew her were touched by that special something that she was able to give to them. Betty will be sadly missed by all those that have known her and more especially by her surviving family members, son Robert (Maria); daughter Carol (Doug); grandchildren Garry, Tony (Eileen), Tracy (Dennis), Todd, Ryan (Megan) and great grandchildren Megan (Channing), and Jordan along with numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband Charles, two sons, Allan and Freddy and numerous brothers and sisters. A funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332 - 8th Street, Brandon, on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ted Jannuska of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. A time of viewing will take place prior to the service from 12 noon to 12:45 p.m. All those in attendance will be considered honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery
- Veterans’ Section. A reception in Betty’s honor will be held in the George Brockie Fellowship Centre (south side of Brockie Donovan) following the graveside service. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Betty’s memory, may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation Heart Care Campaign. Thanks go to the home care workers who helped look after Betty in her final years, all the 3rd floor staff at the Assiniboine Centre, and all the staff at Fairview Home who made her last few months as comfortable as possible. Special thanks to close friend Susan Peters for all her caring and compassion during Betty’s last months.
