TREFFRY: (née Oswin). As gracefully as she lived, Rene Treffry entered into rest after a brief battle with cancer at the Palliative Care Unit of the Assiniboine Centre on November 20th, 2008. Mom was born in Beulah, Manitoba on June 22nd, 1934 to Dorothy and Albert Oswin. She graduated from Beulah High School. Mom worked for the Manitoba Telephone System from 1951-1960 as an operator. In 1959, she married Robert Treffry and together they had two daughters, Karen, born 1960, and Deb, born in 1968. From 1960 to 1980, she chose to stay home and raise her girls. In 1980, she attended ACC for a Clerk Typist course and upon completion, was given an award for outstanding achievement. She returned to work at MTS as a secretary from 1980-1988 at which point she and dad retired. Mom continued to stay in touch with her co-workers/friends through her volunteer work with the Telephone Pioneers until her passing. Mom was predeceased by her sisters Jean MacDonald and May Askew, sister-in-law Lil Treffry, brothers-in-law Nick Shelystinski, Howard MacDonald, Walter Askew, Glen Treffry and nephew Wayne Shelystinski. Mom leaves to cerebrate her life her husband of 49 years, Bob, her daughter Karen (Elaine), Deb (Jamie), grandchildren Gabrielle (Tyler), Alana (Jason) and Tidan, and great grandson Nickolai. Sisters Terry Shelystinski, Dorothy Bullee (Dave), brother Jim Oswin (Joan) and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Monday, November 24, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Mona Franklin officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

TOSH: Marjorie Irene Tosh (neé Hunt) of Brandon, passed away at Fairview Home on November 11, 2008 at the age of 102 years. Marjorie was born March 6, 1906 at Ninette, Manitoba. Marjorie lived a long, happy and full life. She grew up on a small farm near Ninette, Manitoba where she enjoyed helping on the farm and was particularly fond of working with the farm animals. She was educated at Minore Rural and Ninette Schools. Marjorie worked at the Ninette Sanatorium before her marriage to Earl Tosh on January 14, 1932. Together they created a beautiful family and raised four wonderful children – Donna, Arlene, Wayne and Ken. Always a busy farm wife, Marjorie lived first near Glenboro, then Lauder, Ninette, Nesbitt and finally Minto, where she and Earl farmed until retiring to Brandon in 1962. Marjorie worked for a short time at the Brandon General Hospital, and then settled into retired life in Brandon. She was a member of the United Church and in Brandon belonged to Trinity UCW. Through her involvement in community social events and in helping neighbors wherever she lived, Marjorie made many life long friends along the way. She and Earl especially enjoyed their ten wonderful years at Lion’s Manor on Victoria Avenue after moving from their home in 1989. Since Earl’s passing in 1999, Marjorie resided at Fairview Home in Brandon, where she was lovingly cared for. More than anything, Marjorie was always a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be fondly remembered by all of her family, and is survived by: daughter Donna (Richard) Velander of Goodlow, BC; Wayne (Carol) of Winnipeg, MB; Ken (Myrna) of Brandon, MB; Ron Chalmers of Brandon, MB; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Earl; daughter Arlene Chalmers; sister Edith (Ivan) Phillips and brothers Charlie (Annie) and Claude (Lil). A private family service in her memory will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, donations can be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Box 21047, Brandon, Manitoba, R7B 3W8.

USUNIER: The family wishes to announce the passing of André Vital Jean Usunier. André passed away peacefully in his residence at Fairview Personal Care home on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the age of 93 years.
He was born to Robert and Julia Usunier on February 20, 1915 on the family farm near Napinka, Manitoba. He attended school for a short period of time in Grande Clairiere where he lived with the Rey family. In December 1942, he joined the Canadian Armoured Corps and saw active service in The United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Holland before being discharged in 1946 after sustaining an injury.
André married Cecile Careme on December 10, 1946 in Grande Clairiere, Manitoba. Shortly afterwards, they, along with André’s parents, the Cancades, the Carbottes, and the Laberges moved to Brandon were André was employed with Cancade Brothers at the factory located directly behind the family home. In 1955, he began work with the Department of National Defence’s Engineers of Canada at C.F.B. Shilo where he remained until his retirement in 1979.
André enjoyed a long and happy retirement golf, fishing and playing innumerable games of cards with family and friends. He also enjoyed trips to Minot, ND and nearby casinos.
He is survived by Cecile, his wife of 61 years, son Paul (Elaine), son Francis, son Ray (Pat), daughter Judy Quadrelli (Tim) and daughter Elaine Gavigan (Dan). Also surviving are grandchildren Marc (Kendra) and Alison Usunier, Michael, Matthew and Mark Usunier, Marcia Benway (Mark), Rayna Robinson (Nolan), Nicolette Quadrelli, and Tyler, Meghan and Andrea Gavigan; sisters Edith, Marie, and Susanne (Ken); brother Roland (Leona); sister-in-law Teresa; brothers-in-law Joe Careme (Stella), Ed Careme (Marie) and numerous nieces and nephews.
André was predeceased by an infant daughter Judith, parents Robert and Julia, sisters Cecile and Yvonne, brothers Fernie and Vital (Butch) and daughter-in-law Gaye.
Mass of Christian Burial took place on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. Interment followed in the Veterans’ Section of the Brandon Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Tim Quadrelli, Denys Usunier, Joe Careme, Ron Careme, George Lampertz and Garth Wakefield. All in attendance were considered Honorary Pallbearers.
In memory of André, donations may be made to the Fairview Donation Account, Fairview Personal Care Home, 1351-13th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4S6.

USUNIER: Mr. Vital "Butch" Usunier, beloved husband of Teresa, died at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, March 04, 2008 at the age of 79 years. Prayers will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, 327 – 4th Street, on Friday, March 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory Butch may be made to COR Enterprises Inc., 364 Park Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7A8 or to a charity of choice. Complete obituary information to follow.

VAN DEVEIRE: Marie Louise (Weissenburger) Van Deveire passed away peacefully on September 1, 2006 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph who passed on December 5th, 1996. Marie Louise was born in Lorrach, Germany on April 26, 1920 and attended grade school and high school in Erzingen, Germany, a wine growing village in the south of Germany near the Swiss border. After completing high school, she became a nurse and worked in Germany during as well as after World War II. In the early 1950’s, Marie Louise immigrated to Canada where she worked as a nurses’ aide in a hospital in Banff, Alberta until she met and married Joseph Van Deveire, a widower with a daughter, Marieanne and moved to his farm near Deloraine, MB. They had a son, Peter on May 7, 1956 and farmed until 1976 before retiring to Souris. In 1992 they moved to Brandon to be closer to family. Marie Louise enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and baking, especially bread making. She also enjoyed listening to the radio, classical music, playing piano, nature walks and traveling. She attended St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church regularly until she became ill in 2000. Marie Louise is survived by her daughter, Marieanne Peterson, her son Peter Van Deveire and his wife Betty Lam and four grandchildren; Angie and Amariah Peterson and Marcus and Katherine Van Deveire and cousins Peter (Greta) Burger and Otto (Rosa) Burger and their families in Germany. We wish to thank the staff at Fairview Home and Dr. Ho for their care of Marie Louise during her stay. We would also like to thank the emergency staff and Dr. Ip for their attentiveness in her last moments. A Funeral Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. with Fr. Dominic Yuen of St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations may be made on behalf of Marie Louise to Fairview Personal Care Home, 1351-13th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4S6 or to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.

VEITCH: It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gertrude (Madore) Veitch of Brandon, MB on Sunday, September 9, 2007. Gertrude was born on July 6, 1916 in St. George’s, NL. Shortly after her mother’s death in 1918, Gertrude moved to Buchans, NL where she met the love of her life, Philip Veitch and they were married in November 1937. Gertrude was a devoted wife and mother to her three children. Following Philip’s death in 1954, she took on the role of both parents in a time where single parenthood was difficult. Her sons supported the family for many years and enabled her to experience the joy of helping raise her grandchildren. In 1984, Gertrude decided to make a permanent move to Manitoba to live with her daughter and family.
For 23 years, Gertrude played an important role in the Simms family’s life. Her love and support was very evident and she was very proud of all her grandchildren’s successes. Children brought her much joy and she was always happy to hear stories about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gertrude was known as ‘Nan’ to all her grandchildren, and over the years she became affectionately known as ‘Nan’ to all family friends. Nan loved sharing a good laugh with family and friends and visitors always brightened up her day.
She is survived by her children, Charlie Veitch (Vicki Lynch), John (Lori) Veitch, Mary Lou (Ray) Simms and sister-in-law Sr. Mary Celine Veitch and Mary Madore. She is also survived by her grandchildren Philip (Joan) Veitch, Charles Veitch, Brent (Kelly) Veitch, Craig (Jennifer) Veitch, Allison (Michael) Isenberg, and Leann Simms (Chris McCannel); and 6 great-grandchildren Brian, Graham, Noah, Adam, Hailey, and Maria Veitch. She is predeceased by her husband, Philip, father Bill and mother Mary Madore, step-mother Agnes Madore, daughter-in-law Libby Anderson, granddaughter Lisa Veitch, brothers Doug and Gordon Madore, and sisters Ada Chaytor and Beatrice Landers.
Funeral services were held at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, September 13, 2007 with Fr. Raju Madanu officiating. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Michael Isenberg, Chris McCannel, Bill Simms, Al Kozakowski, Ron Kozakowski, and Jim Ritchie.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gertrude may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Manitoba, 42 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B2.
Mom, you are missed by all.

VANDERSTOUW; Tony: With deep sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather at the age of 92 years. Tony was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in May 1952. He leaves to mourn his passing his daughters, Anne (Butch), Hilda (Fred) and only son, William (special friend Madeline). Grandchildren: Carrie-Anne (David), John Jr., Sean (Nicky) and Lee Anne (Adam); great-grandchildren: Taylor, Braden, Hayley, Emily and Malcolm, and Tony’s special furry friend, Whippets the cat. Tony was the oldest survivor of the Brandon Parks Board, where he worked for 23 years cutting and pruning trees until his retirement in 1978. He was predeceased by his wife Maria on October 22, 1987, as well as by sisters and a brother in the Netherlands. In keeping with Dad’s wishes, a private family funeral service was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, March 01, 2007 with Rev. Fr. Michael Tkachuk of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church officiating, assisted by Cantor Tony Yuriy. Interment took place in the family plot at the Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Tony may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6.

VESTBY: Mr. Douglas "Doug" Barry Vestby of Nanaimo, B.C., formerly of Brandon, passed away at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the age of 45 years. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Funeral Celebrant Mr. Lawrence McInnes officiating. A reception will follow at the Central United Church Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vestby Family Trust at any branch of the Coastal Community Credit Union in Nanaimo, B.C.

VICKERS: Frances Margaret Vickers of Fairview Home, Brandon, passed away peacefully at her residence on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the age of 100 years.
Frances was born January 1, 1908 at Glenboro, Manitoba, the first of nine children of Laurent and Persis Girling. Frances received her education in Glenboro before moving to Baldur to work for Bob and Edith Ramage.
On June 12th, 1928 Frances married John Dick Vickers, and farmed in the Greenway area. In 1935, Frances, John and Dorothy sold the farm and moved to Brandon.
Frances loved to cook, especially for others. Fondly remembered are her marshmallows, date cookies, carrot muffins and fruit cake. Everyone knew Frances for her hugs; everyone was treated like family.
Frances and John spent retirement summers at the cottage at Sandy Lake, fishing, teaching grandchildren how to fish and water ski.
Frances is survived by her son Allan (Darlene), grandchildren Barry Sproule, Gail Knox (Dick), Mark Vickers (Penny), Phil Vickers (Shannon), Corrine Blaine (Brent) as well as eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Frances was predeceased by her husband of 74 years, John, daughter Dorothy Sproule-Hillis, sons-in-law Jack Sproule and Jack Hillis and granddaughter Gloria Robertson.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family gratefully declines flowers. Donations may be made in memory of Frances to Fairview Personal Care Home, 1351-13th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 4S6 or to a charity of choice.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the staff and volunteers of Fairview Personal Care Home for their loving, compassionate care.

WOODS: Marjorie Ellis Woods passed away peacefully on October 24, 2006, at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Brandon. Marjorie was born on January 18, 1916, in Miniota, Manitoba, youngest daughter of Wallace and Maud Berwick. She grew up in Miniota and took a business course in Winnipeg. She returned to Miniota, where she married William Peter Woods on October 22, 1941. They lived in Virden until 1944, when they returned to Miniota. Marjorie worked in the Miniota Municipality office from 1950 until 1961, when the family moved to Brandon. There, she worked for the federal government in the Food and Drug office until her retirement. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Bill, her sisters Doris and Frances Peel, and her brothers-in-law, Bill and Charlie Peel, Bob Woods and Doc McLenehan. She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn (Glen) Kidd and Patricia (John) Unrau; grandchildren Michael (Vickie) Kidd, Andrea (Philip) Poole, Ian Kidd, Joanne (Todd) Schmidt, Jennifer (Mark) Bonne and Ryan Unrau; great grandchildren, Charlotte and Eve Kidd, William and Graham Poole and Tyler Schmidt; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy McLenehan and Ruth Woods, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Interment will follow in Miniota Cemetery. Sincere thanks to the neighbors on Clement Drive and the staff at Rideau Park. Flowers respectfully declined.
