Delmar Cleveland
October 17, 1939 - April 8, 2012
The death of Mr. Delmar Cleveland, 72 years of Middle Lake occurred on Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon. Delmar was born on October 17, 1939 at Humboldt to Harold and Anne (nee Lung) Cleveland. He grew up in the Verndale area on the family farm and attended Selmond school. Following his education, he farmed in the Lake Lenore area for a few years. Delmar married Shirley McBride on November 4, 1961 and they raised a family of two children. They moved to Saskatoon when the children were young and made their home there. Delmar worked at a variety of jobs through the years, until finding work in the construction industry. He was a hard worker and continued in this line of work until retirement. About 8 years ago, Delmar moved back to the area where he grew up, settling in Middle Lake, where he lived until the present. He was a kind and gentle man, with a quiet sense of humour, who enjoyed his solitude. Delmar also enjoyed fishing. His grandchildren
were an important part of his life and he loved spending time with them. Delmar will be lovingly remembered by his two children, four grandchildren and one great grandson: Jackie (Ralph) Braun and family Justin Braun and Eric Braun of Highland Mills, NY, USA and Rob (Kathie) Cleveland of Waldheim, SK and family Jamie Cleveland (Chris Craik) and son Finn, and Zane Cleveland, all of Saskatoon; two brothers and four sisters: Randal (Sharon) Cleveland of Lake Lenore; David (Mary) Cleveland of St. Albert, AB; Faye Godart of Humboldt; Christal Krahenbil (Leon Helgert) of Saskatoon; Jean (Ron) Egger of Fort McMurray, AB; and Gail (Ron) Kulchesky of Melfort; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Delmar was predeceased by his wife Shirley (1997); parents, Harold (1955) and Anne (1999); sister, Marion Richert (1978); sister-in-law, Evelyn Cleveland (1982); and brothers-in-law, Marvin Krahenbil (1983), Ruben Richert (1998) and Robert Godart (2003). The Funeral Service for Delmar will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Hwy 5 East Humboldt. Interment will follow in the Mount Calvary Lutheran Cemetery, Verndale district. Memorial Donations in Delmar’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake. George Huebner
November 28, 1931 - April 3, 2012
Mr. George Huebner, 80 years, of the Spalding district passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon. George was born on November 28, 1931 at Watson to Fredrick and Melita (nee Hoffman) Huebner. He grew up in the Spalding area and attended Clearview School. He lived his entire life in the Spalding area, only leaving a few winters to work in Ontario and British Columbia. George, along with his father and his brother cleared the land on the original homestead and established a permanent home for themselves. On April 21, 1964 George married Marian Pappenfus in Annaheim. They began their married life together at Spalding where they constructed a new home and raised their family. George operated his farm and remained active with his land until the end of his life. For many years he worked with two caterpillars, clearing land in the area. He loved being outdoors and his hobbies reflected that. George enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycles, hunting, fishing, piloting his own plane and collecting firearms. He was active in the political party of his choice. George’s family and especially his grandchildren were very important to him and he loved when they could spend time together. He enjoyed fishing and hunting trips with his family and followed his grandchildren’s activities. His constant companion was his dog “Jill”. George enjoyed the friendships he made in the Fellowship. George and Marian liked to travel with their motor home, travelling across western Canada and the western United States and into Mexico. George's family understood he was a "prickly marshmallow" and there are those who are fortunate enough to understand what that means. George was strong, active and healthy right up until February when he became ill. George will be lovingly remembered by four of his children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren: Lisa Huebner (Craig Pozniak) and family Amy Huebner (Justin) and daughter Emma, and Chad Romanski, all of Saskatoon; Sandy (Selmar) Odelein of Quill Lake and family Scott (Amy) Odelein and children Paiton and Kabrie of Humboldt, Courtney Odelein of Vancouver and Josh Odelein and Connor Odelein, both of Quill Lake; Becky (Scott) Witt and daughter Jorja of Kerrobert; and Gene Huebner (Danielle Bryant) of Grande Prairie, AB. He was predeceased by his parents, Fredrick and Melita Huebner; wife, Marian Huebner (2002); son, George Huebner Jr. (1970); and brother, Victor Huebner. The Lutheran Funeral Service for George was held on Monday, April 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Crossroads Bible Church, Spalding officiated by Ken Neumann. Others taking part in the service were: organist, Marilyn Jackson; scripture readers, Jack Ramler and Mark Huebner; words of remembrance, Gene Huebner; and urn bearers were George’s seven grandchildren. Interment followed in the Clearview Cemetery. Memorial donations in George’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Sr. Ottilia Saretzky, OSE
January 13, 1916 - April 1, 2012
God called our dear Sister Ottilia to her eternal home on April 1, 2012 from Samaritan Place Nursing Home in Saskatoon. Elizabeth Saretzky was born in Viscount, SK to Pauline (Loroff) and Alexander Saretzky on January 13, 1916 and grew up in a family of six brothers and three sisters where as the oldest girl she “became mother’s helper”. She attended Aukland School in Viscount and Banner School in Humboldt and later took a dietary and food service course from the South Alberta Institute of Technology. As a teen Elizabeth heard a sermon about religious life during a parish mission that sparked her desire to dedicate her life to God. She entered at St. Elizabeth Convent several months later on Dec. 13, 1935, was received as a novice and given the name Sr. Ottilia with her name day on Dec. 13th. The 13th day of each month was special to Sr. Ottilia; she considered it “my lucky number” when many others thought of it as unlucky. In 1938 she professed temporary vows and in 1941 made her perpetual commitment as a religious. In 2009 Sr. Ottilia celebrated her 70th anniversary of religious profession. In the community Sr. Ottilia served mostly in the kitchens of the various hospitals, convents, and colleges served by the Sisters. After moving every few years for the first 20 years, Sr. Ottilia spent another 20 years at St. Peter’s Abbey kitchen, Muenster before moving permanently to the Motherhouse as a cook for several years before retiring. Sr. Ottilia was cared for by the staff of the St. Elizabeth Convent Infirmary before moving to Saskatoon to be cared for by the staff of St. Joseph Home and Samaritan Place in the last year of her life. Sr. Ottilia’s great loves in life were family, music, cooking, and travel. In Muenster she found great joy participating in St. Peter’s Adult Chorus and learning to play the violin. Sr. Ottilia was predeceased by her parents Pauline and Alexander Saretzky; her sisters Minnie and an infant; brothers Nick, Dan, Mike, Rudolph and an infant; sisters-in-law Olga, Mary, Margaret and Josephine; brothers-in-law Fred Knihnitski and Graham Illingworth. Mourning her passing are the Sisters of St. Elizabeth, her sisters Clara Knihnitski and Evelyn Illingworth; brothers Paul Saretzky and Chris Saretzky; sister-in-law Betty Saretzky and numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass for Sr. Ottilia was held at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. concelebrated by Abbot Peter Novecosky OSB, Fr. Emil April, Fr. Daniel Muyres OSB and Fr. Bernard Stauber OSB. Others taking part in the mass were: crossbearer, Madgalen Dagenais; scripture readers, Sr. Viola Bens OSE and Magdalen Dagnais; prayers of the faithful, Sr. Philomena Dobmeier OSE; offerings, Sr. Louise Krupka OSE and Sr. Helen Kirchner OSE; and altar servers, Leonard Novecosky and Ruth Hiebert. Honorary Pallbearers were “all those who shared in Sr. Ottilia’s life.” Active Pallbearers were Lawrence Saretzky, Wendyl Saretzky, Scott Saretzky, Tim Knihnitski, Ken Saretzky and Tom Illingworth. Interment followed in the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Sr. Ottilia’s name may be made to the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Health Care Fund. Carol Angelstad
November 27, 1933 - March 27, 2012
Carol Doris Angelstad, 78 years of Humboldt, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Watson. Carol was born on November 27, 1933 at home in the Four Corners district, near Meadow Lake, to Bryan and Jennie (nee Moloney) Armstrong. She grew up there and attended the local country school. When Carol was 17, she contracted Tuberculosis and was sent to the Sanatorium in Prince Albert, where she remained for three years. It was here that she met her future husband, Vernon Angelstad. They were married on July 22, 1954 and shortly after their marriage, they moved to Humboldt, where they made their home and raised their two daughters. Carol worked from her home as a seamstress, creating many beautiful wedding gowns for local brides. She also worked at Eaton’s and then began work at the Scotiabank. In 1971, Vern passed away, leaving Carol a young widow. She was transferred to Yorkton with the Scotiabank in 1977 and made this move with her new partner, Peter Faul. Upon retiring from the bank, Carol and Peter returned to Humboldt, where she lived until the present. In earlier years, Carol enjoyed lots of different crafts and tried her hand at oil painting. She was a member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and on the Waldsea Lake Regional Park Board. Carol enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Waldsea Lake with her family and especially loved gardening. She was known for her delicious Nuts & Bolts, which she would lovingly make and share at Christmas time. Carol’s latest love was belly dancing, taking lessons and enjoying a performance whenever she could. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren, always enjoying their visits. Carol also loved animals and had a variety of pets over the years. She was most devoted to her mother, Jennie and lovingly made sure she was always well cared for. Carol will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two daughters, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren: NAOMI (Mervyn) Ramsay of Burr and family, Tammi (Craig) Hackl and daughter Michelle of Saskatoon, Rona Ramsay (Cal Morris) and daughter Kiana of Saskatoon, Tina (Steve) Stalker and sons Cole and Daniel of Middle Lake and Carla (Dave) Clark of Hitchcock; and SHAUNA (Brian) Kendall of Cadillac and family, Chad (Tabita) Kendall and sons Mitchell and Matthew of Ponteix, Justin Kendall of Cadillac, Jason (Alison) Kendall and daughters Chloe and Ava of Ponteix and Sasha Kendall of Dunmore, AB; her mother, Jennie Armstrong of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Watson; sister, Marie Kroeker of Medstead; brother, David (Debbie) Armstrong of Saskatoon; sister-in-law and best friend, Phyllis Armstrong of Humboldt; sisters-in-law, Arlene Budd of Nelson, BC and Margaret Angelstad of Humboldt; and numerous nieces and nephews. Carol was predeceased by her husband, Vern Angelstad (1971); father, Bryan Armstrong (1978), brother, Allan Armstrong (1997); partner, Pete Faul (2007); brother-in-law, Pete Kroeker (2006); parents-in-law, Thor and Agnes Angelstad; and Angelstad brothers-and-sisters-in-law: Henry (Pauline) Angelstad, Norman Angelstad, Violet (John) Proudfoot, Vivian (Tom) Crane, Ken Budd, Ivor (Mabel) Angelstad, Ervin (Grace) Angelstad, Melvin (Virginia) Angelstad, Myrtle (Bob) Coutt and Pearl Angelstad. A Celebration of Life for Carol was held on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Hwy 5 East, Humboldt, officiated by Rev. Al Hingley. Interment followed in the Humboldt Public Cemetery, Legion Section. Memorial donations in Carol’s memory may be directed to the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Recreation Department or Heritage Garden Project. Helen Frank
April 1, 1918 - March 17, 2012
FRANK- It is with great sadness the family pronounces the death our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother Helen (nee Albers) Frank of St. Mary’s Villa Humboldt, SK on March 17, 2012. Helen was born on April 1, 1918 in Marysburg, SK to Joseph and Catherine (nee Weber) Albers. Helen married George A. Frank on March 30, 1937 at Marysburg. Together they farmed in the Marysburg district where they raise four sons: Roger, Lloyd, Duane and Glenn. Helen was kept busy raising the boys. She was very active in the day to day happenings on a farm such as milking cows and feeding chickens. She also was very busy with the domestic duties of running a home. Helen enjoyed keeping a large garden in which the produce allowed her to prepare wonderful tasty meals. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards and visiting with family and friends. In quiet times she would create wonderful embroidered items and quilts for her grandchildren. Helen’s number one love was her family, she loved them very much and loved spending time with each and every one of them. In November 1968 George and Helen moved to BC until 1987 when they returned to Humboldt and lived independently until 1997, when they moved into St. Mary’s Villa. This was their home and they became very close to the staff and residents and the family are forever grateful for their heartfelt kindness and caring. Helen will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three sons, 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 great – great grandchildren: ROGER (Betty) Frank and family Kathy Clark and her children Joshua and Amie, and Cindy (Tyrone) Anderson and children Tanner and Chase all of Maple Ridge, BC; LLOYD (Annabelle) Frank of Annaheim and family Corinne (Perry) Fehr and daughter Nicole of Saskatoon, Bruce Frank of Annaheim and family Cory Frank (Amber Wiesner) and children Shelby and Kamara of Humboldt, Kim (Dennis) Kowalchuk of Annaheim, Owen (Candace) Frank of Fort McMurray and Tammy (Roy) Ramler of Kelvington; GLENN (Linda) Frank and family Devin Frank, Ryan (Dayna) Frank and children Megan and Michelle and Sheila (Aman) Bachra and children Jalen, Taya and Anya all of Surrey, BC; and daughter-in -law Marlene (Ervin) Jaeb of Humboldt and family, Carla Frank and children Janessa, Andrew and Damon of Humboldt and Jacky Frank of Saskatoon; sister-in-law Margaret Albers of Humboldt and numerous nieces and nephews. A Private Family Funeral was at Malinoski and Danyluik Funeral Home on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Celebrated by, Fr. Emile April. Martha Franko
August 10, 1922 - March 18, 2012
FRANKO – Martha was born on August 10, 1922 on the family farm near Springside, SK to Alex and Palahna (nee Shumay) Derow the seventh child in a family of 12. Martha attended Springside School and helped out at home. She married Michael Franko on October 10, 1948 at Whitesand Church. They moved to Prince George for a brief time and then their prairie roots brought them back to Watson, Saskatchewan where they made their home and raised their family of four. Martha was a very dedicated to her faith. She is one of the two last remaining members of the St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Watson. She worked very hard to keep the church alive and was very active in the church’s women’s association. The Ukrainian heritage was very important to her and she continued to provide wonderful meals and celebrations in the traditional Ukrainian way. As her health started to fail she would continue to try to carry the traditions on. Her family brought her the greatest joy especially at Christmas when everyone would come home. Martha was a very giving person no one left her home empty handed usually with a very tasty care package. If you happen to attend the Easter Basket Blessing celebration at the church Martha would make sure you left with either a painted Easter Egg, Pussy Willow branch or a wonderful loving hug. “Baba” to everyone, she was famous for her weed-free garden and sharing the bounty and her super-sour dill pickles. Then came bingo, playing cards and loving her grand and great grandchildren. Martha will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children, 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren: CAROLE and Doug Haussecker of Watson and family Jim and Jodi Haussecker and children Dylan and Connor of Watson and Lana and Derek Woulfe and children Hunter, Jaden and Trey of Marean Lake; IRIS and Gordon Dempster of Hudson Bay and family David Harcourt of Edmonton, Scott Dempster and daughter Christine and Kyle Dempster all of Saskatoon; DAN Franko of Watson and family Trish and Wayne Nordquist and son Lucas, Todd Franko and Amy Franko all of Calgary, AB; and HOWARD and Janice Franko of LeRoy and family Joey Franko and Jamie and Marlys Franko and children Brynn and Micah all of Edmonton, AB; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Martha was predeceased by parents Alex and Palahna Derow; husband Mike; and her 11 siblings: Mary, Bill, John, Polly, Ann, Fred, Metro, Nellie, Mike, Peter and Nick; and members of the Franko family. A Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Very Rev. Archpriest Peter Wasylenko. Others taking part in the service were: cantor, Jason Kopan; palomar, Nick Kaweski; cross bearer, Doug Haussecker and banner bearer Gordon Dempster. Words of Remembrance were shared by Lana Woulfe. Pallbearers were: David Harcourt, Jim Haussecker, Joey Franko, Scott Dempster, Kyle Dempster and Derek Woulfe. Both services were held from St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Watson.
