Edward Yuzdepski
October 23, 1921 - August 11, 2013
Edward was born in Poland in 1921 to John and Josephine Yuzdepski. In March of 1921, he came to Canada with his parents. They settled in the Cudworth district where he attended Skala rural school up to grade 9; then the Second World War years began and he left to work in Saskatoon. In October 1942, Edward married Natalie Sorokowski from the Alvena district. In 1943, Edward and Natalie moved to Prince Albert where Edward took a welding course and then went to work in Fort William in an airplane factory installing bomb bays in Hell-Cat bombers. In 1944, back to Prince Albert he went to complete high school and graduated in 1947. He then attended summer school where he obtained his teaching certificate all the while Natalie worked. Then Edward and Natalie moved to the Wadena school unit where he taught in Zazula, Moosehorn, Park Villa, Quill Lake View, Crocus Vale and Hunter’s Hill schools. In 1962, when the unit decided to close the country schools and bus the students to the town schools he retired and started farming in the Clair district where he farmed until 1976. They then moved to Quill Lake where he became very involved with the Senior Citizen Club. He was “acting” foreman for the building of the new seniors building. They also joined the Roman Catholic Church in Quill Lake. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus where he obtained his 4th degree and was a life time member. Edward also had various jobs over the years such as selling stainless steel cookware door to door, selling Smith Roles and cleaning snow for the CN Railway. He also worked for Crop Insurance for many years. All his life he was involved with music; playing in bands for weddings and anniversaries; even traveling as far as Prince George to play for a Ukrainian New Years Eve dance! And when a few friends came over, out would come the instruments. He even made the time for music lessons. In 2009, Edward and Natalie sold their house in Quill Lake and moved to Humboldt where he resided until his passing. Edward will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends. Edward is survived by his wife of 70 years, Nettie Yuzdepski of Humboldt; daughter, Lynne (Murray) Pinfold, granddaughter, Chaelsey (Devon) Loehr, great-granddaughter Tessa, all of Saskatoon; brother, Freddy (Evelyn) Yuzdepski of Kelowna, BC; and sister-in-law, Grace Yuzdepski of Saskatoon. Edward was predeceased by his parents, John and Josephine Yuzdepski; sister, Mary (John) Deryn; brother, Stan Yuzdepski and one brother in infancy. A Prayer Service for Edward was held on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., from St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt. A Funeral Mass was offered on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., from St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Interment followed at Quill Lake Cemetery. Lloyd Howden
June 15, 1946 - August 5, 2013
After a 15 month courageous battle with cancer the family is very saddened to announce that Mr. Lloyd Dwayne Howden, 67 years, of Saskatoon, formerly of Humboldt and Lanigan passed away at Royal University Hospital on Monday, August 5, 2013. Lloyd was born on June 15, 1946 to David and Mary Ann (nee Williamson) Howden at Swift Current. Lloyd obtained all of his elementary education in the Catholic School System and graduated grade 12 from Swift Current Collegiate. Immediately following graduation Lloyd began employment at Revelstoke and worked there until the age of 22. On November 4, 1968 Lloyd spread his wings and ventured off to Lanigan, SK where he began employment at PCS Lanigan. He married Rose Marie Bartley in April of 1969 in Swift Current. Together they were blessed with two children and continued to live in Lanigan. Christina and her mom were very active with 4H and the local horse club that Lloyd would support in any way needed. When not helping them he was busy with Jason and his sports. Lloyd was always active in his children’s lives. As a family they enjoyed many fishing and camping trips. Every summer they would be gone usually to Waskesiu Lake. Grandma Bartley was always a part of these adventures. As a family they were very closely bonded with Francis and Sharon Washkowsky and their daughters whom he treated as his own. The two families spent many memorable trips together, one in particular when the eight of them loaded up in a van in the cold winter and headed out to Disneyland. Francis and Lloyd were best of friends. Unfortunately after a two year courageous battle with cancer, Rose passed away in 1989. Grandma Bartley stepped in and helped Lloyd. In 1992 Lloyd met his confidante and companion Janice. They were married in 1994 and he accepted Janice’s children as his own. Lloyd and Janice worked with the Lanigan Ambulance as First Responders. Lloyd was also active on the Ambulance Board. In 2000, Lloyd retired from PCS after a 33 year career where he was a supervisor for 26 years. He was very proud of many accomplishments especially being part of the team that won the Saskatchewan Provincial Award in Mine Rescue competition. Retirement took Lloyd and Janice to Barrier Lake where they resided for 5 years. Somehow retirement never really happened as they became involved with both the Archerwill and Barrier Lake First Responders. In his “spare” time Lloyd loved to fish and spend time in his wood-working shop. Every family member has been privileged to have a piece of his creations from mirrors to spice racks. In June of 2000 Lloyd became involved with the Saskatchewan SPCA first as an Animal Protection Officer and then as Manager of Investigative Services. Lloyd also served as the Saskatchewan representative for the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies where he had the opportunity to travel nationally as an advocate as part of the Farm Animal Welfare Committee. Lloyd and Janice later moved to Humboldt. It was there that he began employment as an RCMP Commissionaire. Lloyd was very proud of his unique yard that he and Janice designed at their home on 21st Street, which was part of the Humboldt Garden Tour. Lloyd and Janice shared many wonderful trips. It was amazing to see the Prairie boy expand his love of the sun and water through these vacations. Their last trip was in July where he was able to see his grandson Clayton graduate and then visited his sister in BC. Lloyd was able to pack a lot of living in his short 67 years of life and loved every minute of his life. Lloyd will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 19 years, Janice Howden of Saskatoon, their Tibetan Terrier, Rahj; and his blended family of five children and five grandchildren: Christina (Lorne) Schlosser of Lloyminster, SK and sons Clayton and Dawson; Jason Howden of Wynyard and daughters Maegen and Allison; Eryn Keen (Maria Thornton) of Red Deer, AB; Jon Keen (Stacy Gyger) of Kamloops, BC; and Nancy McCubbing (Brad Steele) and daughter Tianna of Spruce Grove, AB; his mother Mary Ann Howden of Swift Current; three sisters and two brothers: Rita (Ron) Toth of Airdrie, AB, Gloria (Don) Dreher of Kamloops, BC, Ron (Lynne) Howden of Swift Current, Doug (Karen) Howden and Bonnie (Paul) Staats all of Regina. Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Rose Howden (1989); father David Howden; and mother-in-law Jeanne Bartley. A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, August 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Augustine R.C. Sheldon Sperling
April 12, 1969 - July 26, 2013
After a courageous battle with cancer the family is saddened to announce that Mr. Sheldon Sperling 44 years of Humboldt passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital on Friday, July 26, 2013. Sheldon was born on April 12, 1969 to George and Lorraine (nee Schwebius) Sperling in Saskatoon, SK. Sheldon took his education at Young, SK and was very active in all sports. While on the family farm, he grew very attached to the animals and had a great love for dogs. Upon graduating from high school, he went on to the U of S and obtained a Phys Ed Degree and went on to complete his after degree in Elementary Education. While at university, Sheldon played on the Huskie Volleyball team that won the Nationals in the first year. Shortly following his university graduation he began employment at the Colonsay Mosaic Potash Mine. While working at the mine, he also did some substitute teaching when scheduling permitted. He did both a while and then focused on working at the mine where he completed one year in his apprenticeship as an electrician. Sheldon met Susan Puetz at a mutual friends wedding. They began dating and after 5 ½ years of dating, they were married at Assumption Church in Marysburg on November 16, 1996. They enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon to Quebec and Ontario. He was very excited to begin their family and soon they were blessed with three children. He was very active in his children’s lives, helping them with their homework and coaching many of their sporting teams. He turned all of his children into sports fanatics. As a family, they made many wonderful memories camping around the province with family and friends. Sheldon was an excellent cook which Susan and their children always enjoyed. He was always willing to create their favourite dishes such as: homemade noodles, omelettes and his specialty “steak”. He was a very social person who loved to visit and make people laugh by telling jokes. His love for dogs continued in his adult life with his latest companion being Skittles. Family meant everything to Sheldon, his in-laws became like siblings and everyone was very special to him. Unfortunately, in the spring of 2011 Sheldon was diagnosed with cancer. He fought the battle with a strong, positive outlook right to the end. Sheldon will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 16 years, Susan Sperling and their three children: Jessi, Jaymond and Abbie all of Humboldt; parents George and Lorraine Sperling of Young; two brothers and their families: Maurice (Shirley) Sperling of Saskatoon and family Christina Pambrun (Chad LaPointe) and children Taison and Bryken, Elaina (Scott) Thorsteinson and children Karis and Nixen; Terry (Brenda) Sperling of Young and family Tanner and Jaycee; parents-in-law: Lyle and Irene Puetz; four brothers and sisters-in-law and their families: Russell (Joye) Puetz of Moose Jaw and family Dustin (Suzanne) Maslasz and Kayla (Caleb) Buckingham; Eric (Paulette) Puetz and family Cassidy and Shaelyn; Greg (Brenda) Puetz and family Jordan and Janelle; Steven (Darcy) Puetz and family Zade and Quinn all of Humboldt. Sheldon was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents and by a brother in infancy Joseph Conrad Sperling. A Prayer Service will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. presided by Jenny Irwin and a Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Both services will be held at St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt. Interment will follow at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery

Marie Petit
June 8, 1946 - July 23, 2013
After a short but courageous battle with cancer Mrs. Marie Elsie Petit, 67 years of Pathlow, SK. passed away on July 23, 2013 at the Melfort Union Hospital, Melfort. Marie was born on June 8, 1946 to Alain and Elsie (nee Piatt) Rohel in the St. Brieux District. She attended Tilley School and then later the St. Brieux Convent to obtain all of her education. She met Joseph Petit and soon then were married and had four children. Marie’s career was being the best mother and homemaker possible she took this role very seriously. She was very talented and created many knitted and crocheted pieces for her family. They all had special pieces of clothing, afghans, mitts and hats to name a few. She also loved gardening so she could create delicious dishes for her children. Marie had a few favourites such as her wonderful tasting homemade breads, buns and cabbage rolls that the family will never forget. In 2000 she moved to Pathlow and lived with Richard and they did a lot of visiting and day trips which included a few games of bingo a long the way of their travels. She loved to visit and have a good laugh. Her family was very special to her and they will dearly miss her. Marie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her; four children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Richard of Pathlow; Len (Myrna) of Red Deer, AB and family, Kyle of St. Brieux and Lisa (Mike) and daughter Scarlet of Red Deer; Shawna and family, Stephen and daughter Ella, Melissa, Johnathon and David, all of Edmonton, AB; and Ed (Corrine) and family, Tyler, Jasmine and Jenai, all of Martinsville; parents: Alain and Elsie Rohel of St. Brieux; two brothers and two sisters: Marcel (Shirley) Rohel of St. Brieux, Albert (Marlene) Rohel of St. Brieux, Helen (Wayne) Kruger of Pathlow and Evelyn (Douglas) Tarala of Martensville; sisters and brothers-in-law: Iris Hetchler of Innisfail, AB, Gloria (Lloyd) Olsen of Gronlid and Chris Petit of Calgary, AB; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph (October 14, 2012) and her niece Elenore Rohel. The Funeral Mass for Marie was held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Kermaria Roman Catholic Church, in the St. Brieux District celebrated by Fr. Demetrius Wasylynirk, O.S.B. Others taking part in the mass are: cross bearer, Tyler Petit; readers, Sheldon Kruger and Amy Kriston; gift bearers, Jasmine Petit and Jenai Petit; and eulogists, Helen Kruger and Evelyn Tarala. Honorary Pallbearers were “All those who shared in Marie’s life”. Interment followed in the Kermaria R.C. Cemetery. Memorial donations in Marie’s memory may be made to the St. Brieux Roman Catholic Parish (Kermaria Church Upkeep). Edwin "Buck" Gourlay
September 8, 1929 - July 22, 2013
The family is very saddened to announce that Mr. Edwin Gourley, 83, years, of St. Mary’s Villa Humboldt passed away at his residence on Monday, July 22, 2013. Edwin was born on September 8, 1929 to Clifford and Marion (nee Weston) Gourlay in Ingersoll, ON. He obtained his education at Thamesford, ON. At the age of 14 Edwin, fondly known as Buck, took a train to Saskatchewan to obtain employment which he found in Renown as a farm labourer. He thoroughly fell in love with Western Canada. Buck found the people to be very friendly and provided excellent meals. His favourite time on the farm was threshing. On one of the neighbouring farms Buck met Elsie Banow and on April 24, 1948 he married Elsie Banow. Together they were blessed with six children and made their home at Manitou Beach. Buck did a variety of jobs that involved handling of heavy duty equipment. For a period he worked with the Department of Highways and this allowed family time when the children could come along and camp and enjoy a summer vacation. Buck had a passion for horses and raced Chuck Wagon and later Chariot with his daughter Edwina. Many people were accustomed to only seeing his back during a race as he usually was in the front winning many trophies. Buck and Edwina made a good racing team winning many Chariot races for 15 years. Buck was fortunate to win a trophy for the oldest rider trophy. In 1994 Buck and Elsie retired to Humboldt where Buck became an avid gardener – potatoes being his specialty. He was kept busy keeping his daughter Linda’s garden in immaculate shape. Another love was chopping wood which kept him busy and in shape physically. Buck loved to visit and have coffee keeping up on the local news. He also followed his grandchildren and their activities. Due to failing health in 2009 Buck moved to St. Mary’s Villa where he resided until his passing. Buck will be sadly missed and loving remembered by his wife of 65 years, Elsie Gourlay; five children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren: Michael (Barb) Gourlay of Humboldt and family Pamela (Jack) and children, Kyle, Ramone and Mykaella, Charlene (Brendin) and their daughter Janeese and Justin; Linda (Scott) Ewen of Humboldt and family, Arlee (Tom) and their children Austin, Emilee and Holly, Jeremiah (Karen), Cameron (Heather) and Kaylee (Kris); Donna (Roch) Boisvert of Leduc, AB, and family Corey (Brandy) and children Madison and Brooklyn, Crystal and family Chackquick, Brandon and Aiden; Edwina Gourlay of Jansen and son Billy Gourlay and family Dawson, Taryn and Cohen; and Patti (Dale) Wasylciw of Saskatoon/Watrous; sister: Berniece (Allan) Borland of Thamesford, ON; sisters-in-law: Josie Mayor of Port Alberni BC, Diane (Rick) Gosse of Devon, AB; and Sara Banow of Melville; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Edwin was predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Marion Gourlay; son, Bruce; brothers-in-law, Bill Banow, Edward Banow and his in laws Mike and Emily Banow. Doreen Mossey
December 28, 1931 - July 22, 2013
It is with great sadness that the family announces the Ms. Doreen Esther (nee Johnson) Mossey, 81 years of Calgary, AB passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2013 at Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre Calgary, AB. Doreen was born on Dec. 28, 1931 at home at Rose Valley, SK to Magnus and Selma Johnson. Doreen took all of her education in Rose Valley. Doreen was the eldest of six children and at the age of 15 her mother passed away. Due to circumstances she moved to Calgary to live with extended family. Doreen began employment here in the clerical field a career she continued her whole life. She lived and worked all of her adult life in Alberta working as a steno, secretary and bookkeeper for a variety of companies. Doreen loved her life in Calgary it allowed her have a very active social life where she loved to dress up and go out for fun times with her friends. She also had a passion for reading and kept every book she read and sometimes read the same book twice. Her collection was enormous. Her two favorite colors were black and red and if you were purchasing a present for her if it was in those two colors you knew she would love it. Her apartment and her clothing had a large collection of the two colors. Doreen was a very private person who rarely shared much emotion but was loved by many. Doreen will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her stepmother Ruby Johnson {Rose Valley}, siblings Florence Thompson, Kelvington, Viv Gronsdahl {Ray} Churchbridge, Joyce Rich {Mel}, Penticton, Elaine Hauge {Jerry} Calgary, Don Johnson {Lorraine} Rose Valley, and Myron Johnson, Calgary. She was predeceased by her Mother Selma Johnson and her Father Magnus Johnson. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt presided by Jenny Irwin. Interment followed at Dovre Lutheran Cemetery, Rose Valley. Memorial donations in Doreen’s memory may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
