PUFFER, MYRTLE
Dated: 08/04/2007
Govan, SK
PUFFER, MYRTLE (NEE LAKNESS) - September 7, 1913 July 29, 2007. Mom embraced life. When her path led her through times of sorrow she believed that the light was just waiting to break through. Her life journey at the end was full of challenges. We watched her adapt to each stage with grace and acceptance. She taught us how to love but most of all how to live our lives with joy and thankfulness and how to look for gifts even in the difficult times. We, her family, will forever walk our lives feeling her unconditional love. Myrtle was born in Govan Sept. 7, 1913 to Gunder and Mary Lakness. She married the love of her life Fred Puffer on August 2, 1934. Fred was her partner on her life journey for 63 years. Together they raised three children, ran the farm and were active members of the Govan community. Mom was very community minded and supported her community through leadership and volunteering. She was involved in the Ladies Aid, Homemakers, as a 4H leader and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a strong supporter of her church serving on the church council and teaching Sunday school. At times we nicknamed her reverend mother. She assisted in the beginning of the Parkland Regional Library for three years then at age 60 took on a new career as chief librarian. Her love of books and reading as well as her gift for storytelling with the children made this a very rewarding time of her life. Mom was noted for her cooking/baking (the products of which often went directly to support local bake sales) and the joke at our house was when we saw freshly baked goods we asked Who is that for mommy? Mom loved her garden and much of her enjoyment was not just the tending and growing but sharing the flowers and vegetables of her labour with friends and neighbours. Dad referred to Mom as his feisty little Norwegian and this feistiness was most evident in her recreational pursuits of bridge and curling. She won many events in curling but was remembered as this little woman who lifted her rock up off the ice, rested it on her knee, polished the bottom, then placed it back down on the ice. Mom was predeceased by daughter Holly, husband Fred, sister Bernice, brother Conrad and sister Olga. She is survived by Holly's children Tim Clermont (Holly), Rob Clermont (Kandra) Sheri Laughren (Ken) Daughter Sharon Fyke and children Stacy (Tim) Irvine, Chad Fyke and their father Dale Fyke. Son Fred K. Puffer (Bernadette and Gary). Sister Helen Turnbull. Brother Osborne Lakness and wife Rita sister of the heart Eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and Nephews. Mom believed death was like a butterfly flying free of the cocoon. We are sad and will miss her spirit but find joy in knowing the she is flying free. A celebration of her life will take place in the Govan United church on Monday August 13 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Cancer Society, the Govan United Church general fund or the charity of your choice. On behalf of Mom -- Special thanks to Carla and Paula at Luther Heights, the many palliative care nurses who were Mom's angels, Joanne, Karen, Roland and staff at Prairie Springs and staff on the Palliative care unit at St. Pauls.
