Norman Berens
NORMAN JAMES BERENS Norman began his heavenly sleep after a lengthy illness on Monday, October 7, 2002 at the age of 54 years, at the Deer Lodge Hospital, Winnipeg. His family and friends will sorely miss him, especially his children, Norma Jean Sinclair, Steve, Marcy, Alannah Berens and Carol Hamilton; his grandchildren
, Harley, Josh, Allan and Wade Jr. Norman will be sadly missed by his siblings, Jessie Bittern (Elbert), Christina Flett (Albert), Bella Berens, Alex Goosehead, Chester Berens, Dulus Berens, Thomas Berens, Maggie Felix; and his only surviving uncle Wilson Goosehead; his godchild Ocean; and his banana girl great-niece Meaghan. There are also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Sandy and Mary Berens; siblings, Peter Berens, Charlie Goosehead, James Semple, Catherine McKay, Heather Cochrane and Catherine Berens. Norman was born
and raised in Berens River. He loved to trap, hunt and fish. He was close to his best friends, Hughie Semple, Howard Berens and Wilford Bouchie. They will miss their dear friend. Norman will be remembered by all who knew him and loved him. God called you home Norman, no more suffering on this earth, yet you've gained an everlasting life. We are here, you are there, to that land that is fair. Enjoy the ones who wait to greet you at the golden gate. We will keep you in our hearts but for now we must part. Maree Birt
MAREE KATHLEEN BIRT With her loving husband at her side, Maree Birt (nee Mathews), youthful and active at 86 years, went peacefully to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, October 6, 2002. She was the wife of Charlie for 62 years and the mother of Ron (Margaret), Bev (Ken), Brian (Lina) and William (Sarah). In addition to brother Pat (Joyce) Mathews; and sisters, Celia (Jim) Irons and Eileen (John) Rowson; Maree is survived by many nieces and nephews; as well as grandchildren, Amanda (Gerry), Peter, Rod (Joanie), Gordon, and Sean and great-grandchildren, Alexis and Megan. Devoted to her family far and near, Maree loved people and influenced many hundreds as a loving wife and mother, caring friend, great swimming teacher, talented pianist and song leader, dedicated seniors' volunteer, and servant to those in need. She believed that her musical gifts should be nurtured and shared with others (church congregations, patients and residents at St. Boniface General Hospital, Misericordia General Hospital, Riverview Health Centre, and Tache Centre, as well as family and community cultures. She cherished life and lived it to the fullest, exemplifying her strong Christian beliefs. Maree will be dearly missed by all who knew her - we are far richer for the opportunity of sharing our time with her. KATHERINE BUECKERT Katherine Bueckert aged 95 years of Donwood Manor Personal Care Home, Winnipeg, MB and formerly of Gretna, MB passed away at Donwood Manor on October 5, 2002. Katherine Bueckert is survived by two sons, Dave (Marianne) Bueckert, Peter Bueckert; two daughters, Katherine (Frank) Ebner, Mary Gibbins; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband David Bueckert in 1983 and also by her grandson Gerald Ebner in 1996. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. from the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church in Altona, MB with interment to follow in the Gretna Cemetery. John Cable
JOHN WILLIAM CABLE Born August 31, 1914 in Gilbert Plains, died October 6, 2002 at the age of 88. John was the second eldest of nine children. He was predeceased by parents, Margaret (Parkman) and George Cable; brothers, Vernon (Bud) in Italy during the Second World War, Walter; and sister Etta; and wife Hannah Mary (October 3, 1998). John is survived by daughter Pat (Fred) Dupas, grandchildren, Kim (Rob) Grewe, Bart (Brandy) Edmond, Freddy (Stacie) and great-grandson Sebastian; son Bob (Pat) and granddaughter Mandy; brothers, Len (Babs), Cecil, Bob (Jean); sisters, Rea and Betty. Dad rode the rails looking for work during the Depression. He became a "Jack" of all trades for many years. A top rate upholsterer at the CN until his retirement. He enjoyed meeting his pals at the Legion, curling, travelling but most of all gardening and fishing. Everyone from family and friends to acquaintances enjoyed the bounty of his garden and fishing catches. He will be missed by all his many relatives from Hudson Bay and other locales from Manitoba to British Columbia. MARJORY CHAMBERS It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our loving mother and grandmother Marjory Chambers, aged 86, on Sunday, October 6, 2002 at the Grace Hospital. Marjory was born
in Saskatoon, SK to Evans and Lila Smith where she lived until she married Sam Chambers in 1939. She was predeceased by Sam in 1986. They were married for 47 years. Their six children were raised on Overdale in St. James and the "Chambers House" was known by all as a place you could always go. The six surviving children are Kathryn (Dave) Brown of Belleville, ON, Evans (Lee) Chambers of Caroline, AB, Bruce (Edie) Chambers of Kelowna, BC, Brenda (John) Shantz of Kamloops, BC, Roy (Debbie) Chambers of Vancouver, BC, and Christine (Rob) Bye of Winnipeg. She will also be very lovingly remembered by 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. To Mom it was always about family, from our cherished times at Falcon Lake to more recent family memories, Mom was always the warm hub of it all. Mom also had a passion for art and was a lifetime member of the St. James Art Club since 1964. Her works have been displayed at numerous exhibitions and she won numerous awards. Her most prized works were her hand-sculpted crocus often given to family and her many friends. Mom and grandma saw everything in a positive light and could always make you laugh. LLOYD DICK It is with sadness we announce the tragic passing of our son (brother) Lloyd Edward Dick of Winnipeg, MB, on October 4, 2002 at the age of 43 years. DIEDRICH DUECK It is with great sadness that the family of Diedrich Dueck announces his sudden passing on October 5, 2002 at the age of 72. He leaves to mourn his wife Edna, of 43 years; children and grandchildren, Sherilyn (Doug - Melisa and Allison Mathieu), Phyllis Dueck, Cameron (Monika - Meaghan, Kayla, Christopher and Michael Dueck), Lauren (Terri - Stuart and Patrick Dueck) and Lillian (Jim - Braedan and Justin Haacke). Also mourning are his sisters and brothers, Helen Kehler, John (Anne) Dyck, Mary (Diedrich) Groening, Peter (Helen) Dueck, Jake (Darlene) Dyck, Susan (Bill) Dueck, Ben (Brenda) Dyck; numerous nieces and nephews and their families and many friends. Diedrich had a very strong work ethic and commitment to his family. He worked for over 37 years as a shipper/receiver with Buhler Industries Inc. (previously Malco, Allied Farm Equipment and Farm King Allied) in Winnipeg. After his retirement from Buhler Industries in 1995, he enjoyed working the family farm in the Gretna area. Rod Fowler
ROD FOWLER April 10, 1944 - October 4, 2002 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear son, brother, father, husband, and friend. Rod passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his wife Jette, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Jette; his daughter Kira; his mother Ella; and his sister Monica and family. Rod was born
in Victoria, BC, in 1944. He received his BA from the University of Winnipeg where he was also awarded Athlete of the Year. He earned his CA in 1973. That same year he joined Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) as comptroller in Winnipeg. Rod had a very long and dedicated association with Ducks Unlimited Canada with whom he worked for 29 years. He became Manitoba provincial manager in 1976 and western regional manager in 1983. In 1999, Rod was appointed executive vice-president. He was responsible for the leadership of the organization's conservation programs across Canada while working from DUC's head office at Oak Hammock Marsh. Together, Rod and Jette enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, skiing, and travel. In recent years, Rod took up long distance running. He proudly ran and completed the 2000 and 2001 Manitoba Marathon as well as the 2001 Okanagan International Marathon. Rod was a kind and gentle soul, always looking for the best in everyone he met. Rod enjoyed his travels through North America as this allowed him to work with like-minded visionaries in conservation. Completely selfless, he hoped that others would continue with his vision for a better environment. Our special thanks go out to Dr. Pat Harris and the dedicated staff of the Oncology Unit at the Salvation Army Grace General Hospital as well as our many friends. Rod requested that there would not be any funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, he has asked that donations be made in his memory to DUC's Habitat Fund for Our Heritage, Box 1160, Stonewall, MB, ROC 2Z0. Ducks Unlimited Canada will be dedicating a wetland conservation project in Rod's honour in the future.
Jose Frias
JOSE PERREIRA FRIAS It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jose Perreira de Frias, aged 56 years, on Sunday, October 6, 2002 at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Coimbra, Portugal. Jose passed away courageously with his family by his side in a struggle to overcome a battle with cancer. He will be remembered and forever loved in the hearts of his wife Ermelinda, daughter Ana Cristina, and in memory of his son Carlos. Jose was born
in Casais de Abadia, Ourem in Portugal on November 2, 1945. He started his journey in Canada on January 29, 1973 alongside his wife Ermelinda and shortly after was accompanied by his two children, Carlos and Ana Cristina. Jose worked for the Boilermakers as a welder for many years. He greatly enjoyed travelling, working on cars, playing his accordion, and most importantly, he loved getting together with family and close friends and engaging in big gatherings. He used to say that having these gatherings brought much happiness to him, more than anybody could or would ever know. Jose was well known and will always be remembered for his dedication to hardwork and his love for his wife, children and family. His kind and sweet heart was always prepared to lend out a helping hand to family and friends. He will also be remembered for his great sense of humour that always seemed to put a smile on the faces of those around him. Jose will be remembered by his entire family, all his 11 brothers and sisters, his brother and sisters-in-law, his nieces and nephews, and the rest of his family, as well as all his friends and coworkers. A mass will be held in honor of Jose on Saturday, October 12 at 5:00 p.m at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin Street. His wife and daughter would like to express their thanks and sincere gratitude to all the family and friends that stood by Jose's side in prayer and support during his battle with cancer. MARION LORRAINE FRIESEN (nee YOUNG) November 9, 1936 - October 6, 2002 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Marion, on Sunday, October 6, 2002, at Concordia Hospital, aged 65. Marion was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Young; sister Caroline Miller; infant sister Irene; brothers-in-law, Wally Sklepowich, Herb Klassen, Joe Gluting, Mike Shady and Charlie Miller. Leaving to cherish her memory are her husband Rudy and son Keith. A special pet, Ripple, will miss her also. She is survived by three brothers, William (Irene), Leonard (Irma) and Harold (Inez); five sisters, Dorothy Shady, Helen Gluting, Edna Klann (Harold), Leona Kramble (Chuck), Loretta Sklepowich; and many nieces and nephews. and raised in Thalberg, MB where she attended school and spent her childhood. After her move to Winnipeg she was employed at Eaton's and shortly after married Rudy on November 21, 1959. Gordon Gislason
GORDON GISLASON Quietly, at the age of 92, after a brief illness Gordon (Gudni) Adalsteinn Gislason passed away on October 5, 2002. Gordon was born
on the family farm north east of Arborg on April 4, 1910. He attended Bjarmi and Ardal schools and after finishing school helped his father Thorarinn and brother Edward at home on the farm. During the winter of 1930-31 Gordon went out logging in the undeveloped region north of Rosenburg where he continued to work in the winters until 1942. In 1937 Gordon also helped open up a road into Section 24, Twp 27 - Rge 3E where camps were built and a sawmill set up. He worked at this for six winters. On November 11, 1940 Gordon married Jacobena Jacobson, daughter of Gudmundur and Una Jacobson of Framnes, MB. They built a homestead on the east half of NE 36-22-2E. Gordon was a quiet gentleman who lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed curling, pool, darts, bingo and sharing stories of his experiences of the "old days" but above all he loved to golf. He took up golf in his 80s and amazed family and friends in his avid pursuit of the sport, continuing to play until only recently. Gordon retired from farming after Bena's death and spent some time in Vancouver with his sister Inga and brother Edward. In 1979 he went to live with his nephew Ingi and niece Gene where he remained until he moved into the personal care home. The youngest of five children, Gordon was predeceased by his wife Bena in 1976; father Thorarinn and mother Soffia; sisters, Bertha, Lauga and Inga; and brother Edward. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. "Uncle" Gordon will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Arborg and District Health Centre as well as the staff of the personal care home for their professionalism and compassionate care. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ardal-Geysir Lutheran Church. VIVIAN LENA HENRY 1924 - 2002 Vivian Henry of Calgary, formerly of Winnipeg, passed away at the Agape Manor on Monday, September 23, 2002, at the age of 78 years. MOLLY BEATRICE (PAT) HERRING June 3, 1902 - October 6, 2002 Peacefully, on October 6, 2002 at Lions Personal Care Centre, Pat Herring died at the age of 100 years - a long life, well- lived. Her loving niece, Norma, was by her side. Pat will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her nieces, Norma (Peter) Drosdowech of Winnipeg, Dorothy (Don) Mathieson of Kingston, ON and Peggy Durant of England; nephew Bob (Sunny) Johnson of Vancouver; and her many great-nieces and great-nephews across Canada, in Bellingham, WA, and in England. Pat was especially close to Norma and Peter and their four daughters, Laura of Miami, FL, Linda of Vancouver, BC, Sandra, and Carol, both of Winnipeg. May 29, 2001 Pat was born
in Salisbury, England on June 3, 2002 and emigrated to Canada in 1908 with her parents, Ernest and Maria (Dennis) Herring, and five sisters, Mabel, Queen, Kay, Marge and Olive. Her eldest sister Dorothy (Doll) remained in England while her brother Bob joined the family in Quebec City. The tragic death of Pat's mother at the age of 43 presented great difficulties for the sisters. With great determination they supported one another as they made new lives for themselves. Pat lived for a time in Bellingham, WA with her sister Queen, and in Vancouver where she worked for Boeings during the Second World War. She returned to Winnipeg in 1947 where she lived with her sister Marge until her death in 1993. As a young woman, Pat enjoyed summer work in the dance hall at Winnipeg Beach. Later, Pat worked for many years in Eaton's Children's Wear, and was proud to be promoted to be a section head and a buyer for she had little formal schooling. Her intelligence and wisdom came from life's experiences. Family was the most important element in Pat's life. She cared for her sisters throughout their lives and many family members appreciated her talents in sewing, knitting and crocheting. Even in the last years of her life she continued to knit for "the girls", including a blanket for Emily's layette. Pat enjoyed travelling, especially with her niece, Norma. They made a special trip to Quebec City in 1997 to see the headstone they had placed on the gravesite of Pat's mother Maria. Norma is grateful for all the memories she holds from her connection with this gracious, courageous and independent woman who truly was a "survivor". The family wish to thank Dr. David Corner, Pat's longtime physician, and everyone at Lions Personal Care Centre, especially the staff of the Fourth Floor. The loving care offered to Pat, especially in the last days of her life, was a great gift to her and her family. Donations in Pat's name can be made to Lions Personal Care Recreation Program, 320 Sherbrook, Winnipeg, MB R3B 2W6. Cremation has taken place. Pat's ashes will be interred at Fort Garry Cemetery beside her sister Marge. A memorial service and reception will be held at Lions Personal Care Centre on Friday, October 11 at 2:00 p.m.
