IRWIN - Stewart Mitchell 1922 - 2002 Mitchell Irwin died on December 21, 2002 in Bakersfield, California at the age of 80 years. Mitchell is survived by his loving wife of thirty-four years, Emma Lee (Borgsdorf) Irwin of Bakersfield, and his daughter Jordan Irwin Fabish of Long Beach, California. A longtime resident of Bakersfield, Mitchell was in poor health in recent years. He is also survived by a brother Joe Irwin of Calgary, Alberta; and two sisters, Aileen Shier of Calgary, and Carol Grant of San Simeon, California. Mitchell was predeceased by his parents Joseph S. and Carrie Mae Irwin, who were longtime residents of Calgary. Mitchell Irwin was born in Casper, Wyoming on September 23, 1922. He arrived in Calgary with his family in 1930, and attended King Edward School and Western Canada High School, graduating in 1939. He then attended New Mexico military Institute in Roswell, prior to entering University of Washington, Seattle in 1941. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from U of W in 1947. Mitchell was drafted into the U.S. Army Infantry in 1942, but subsequently qualified for Officer's Training and received the rank of Lieutenant. He transferred to the Army Air Corps and trained as a navigator. He was assigned to the 13th Air Force based in the South Pacific and, in 1944 to 1945, survived an eight-month tour of duty in the heavy bomber squadrons in the Philippine theatre. Following World War II, Mitchell married, finished university, and joined the California Standard (Chevron) Company who assigned him to Long Beach, CA as a petroleum engineer. Except for a few years spent with an independent drilling contractor, Mitch spent the majority of his professional career with Chevron's drilling department, primarily in the Taft/Bakersfield area. Prior to retirement from Chevron in 1982, Mitchell took a four-year tour of duty with Aramco as Superintendent of Onshore Drilling - Saudi Arabia. Mitch always had a love of music, primarily modern jazz, and although his training in his early years was quite informal, he became a reasonably accomplished pianist. He enjoyed mostly playing for friends and family, but did do the occasional public performance. He will be sorely missed by his immediate family in California, by his sisters, Aileen and Carol, his brother Joe, and old friends residing in Calgary. 153190
