Helen Robinson

HELEN RUTH ROBINSON (nee HOOKER) Helen Ruth Robinson (nee Hooker) was born icon April 13, 1925 in Selkirk, MB and died with her family by her side on February 3, 2003 in Winnipeg. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Ruth Hooker; her brothers, Frank and Richard Hooker; her husband Howard; and her beloved grandson Trevor Joel Robinson. Missing her, yet knowing that she is at peace, are: her children, Rob (Val), Inez (Brian), Garry (Bobby), and Donna (Bill); grandchildren, Pam (Jamie), Kirsten (David), Mark, Jonathan, David, Michael, Benjamin, Malachi, and Joshua; and four beautiful great-grandchildren, Joel, Kenzie, Cecilia, and Mason; and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen touched many throughout her life: her student ministry in Sprague and her long teaching career begun in Killarney and Swan River and spent mostly in Selkirk; providing a child day care; and teaching English as second language to new Canadians, volunteering at various times and places throughout her life, with C.G.I.T., the U.C.W., the Museum of Man and Nature, St. Matthew's Maryland food bank, the Oak Table ministry, and others too numerous to mention. Family present and past have always meant so much to Helen and she derived great joy from gathering photos and memorabilia, the largest body of which was the artworks and life story of her stepgrandmother Marion Nelson Hooker. Mom once said, "if we have real faith and honest faith, a funeral is a happy occasion!" Please join us as we celebrate her life at Augustine United Church on Friday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Historic St. Clements Church, just south of Selkirk, with a time for fellowship and stories at Selkirk United Church at 1:30 p.m. Helen was a generous person all her life, giving to many charities and the less fortunate, with gifts and deeds. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Winnipeg Harvest or charity of your choice. Cremation and arrangements by Thomson Funeral Chapels, Winnipeg.

Olga Seliger

OLGA SELIGER (SCHILBERG) Olga was born icon February 16, 1904 in Poland. She died peacefully in her sleep Monday, February 3, 2003. She was predeceased by her husband Rudolf and her daughter Else Barchet. In 1925, Olga married a local village boy, Rudolf Seliger and they had an only child Else. After the Second World War they found themselves in Germany from where they immigrated to Canada in 1948 after being sponsored by relatives. After relocating several times, Olga returned to Winnipeg in 1982 after her husband's death. Initially she resided at Villa Heidelberg, then Donwood Manor. Fiercely independent, she enjoyed living in her own suite until she felt her health necessitated moving into the nursing home facilities. Here the staff took great care of her. We would like to thank them at this time for their kind efforts. Though physically limited by now, her mental alertness allowed her to closely monitor all her affairs, so essential to her sense of independence. And she was certainly looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday in 2004! We are sad that this landmark will not come to pass, but appreciate that she is in a better place now. Olga is survived by her son-in-law Paul K. Barchet; grandchildren, Rosemarie Watson (Ken) of Victoria, Carmen Barchet (Larry Desrochers), Paul M. Barchet (Jacinta) and Marianne Barchet, all of Winnipeg; and great-grandchildren, Mark, Tim, and Tina Watson, Lyra and David Barchet and Stefan Buza; and great-great grandchild Tracy of Victoria. Funeral service will be held Friday, February 7, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance, with viewing from 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Ave. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200

Rakel Dagmar Bedsvog was born icon on August 18, 1906, near Namsos, Norway. She originally immigrated to Canada with her mother Petra; and brothers, Peter Johnson, Joe Astrup and Gabe Hartman, in 1924. Led by the matriarch Petra, the Bedsvog family had always been entrepreneurs. Arriving in Winnipeg, they started with a restaurant, the first of many business ventures in their new country. At Clear Lake she met Reidar Chelswick and they were married on October 31, 1940 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where they continued as lifelong members. Reidar and Rachel together assumed control of the Crosstown Grocery, which they operated until their retirement in 1971. They were always active in the social life of Winnipeg's Norwegian community. John was one of the fortunate ones, able to pursue something he loved, for his entire life. His love of the land was evident by his delight in watching things grow, taking crop tours, taking farming workshops, and meeting and talking with other farmers. His interest in the farm continued even after he "semi-retired" only a few years ago. John strongly believed in the farmer's creed of neighbour helping neighbour. He was a founding member of the St. Clements Fire Department, and proudly served as a volunteer fire fighter to the community for 23 years.
