MARY SMITH

MARY ANNE SMITH (nee BOHM) March 25, 1938 - June 22, 2004 Anne was predeceased by her father Thomas Bohm in 1963; by her mother Mary in 1970 and her good friend Mike Robert. She is survived by her brother Tom Bohm (Louise), nephews, Tom (Marci), Glen (Buntha) and grandnieces, Malia and Malika, all of Winnipeg, MB; brother Jim Bohm (Maureen) of Langruth, MB, nephews, Ryan of White Rock, BC, Kevin of Winnipeg, niece Cheryl Rosling (Bruce) and grandniece Lauren of Gladstone, MB. She is also survived by aunts, Fina Lasson of Langruth and Alice Lasson of Portage la Prairie, MB. Anne was a member for 25 years of the Ladies Auxiliary of Comox Legion No. 160. She was employed by CIBC for many years. Anne enjoyed doing cross-stitch, crocheting and travelling - especially to Manitoba to visit her family. Anne was a very giving and loving person who will be ever remembered and sadly missed by all who knew her. According to Anne's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Burial service will take place on Thursday, July 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the Roman Catholic Cemetery near Langruth. For directions, please phone Tom or Louise at 222-2280. DOROTHY STEVENSON

DOROTHY BEATRICE STEVENSON Dorothy Beatrice Stevenson, widow of the late David Alexander Stevenson, passed away quietly after a brief illness at Deer Lodge Centre on July 2, 2004 at the age of 103, with family by her side. Dorothy was born icon in Canning Town, London, England on September 22, 1900, daughter of Edward and Alice Duce. At the age of six, her family immigrated to Canada and settled in Wawanesa, MB. There she grew up along with her four brothers and two sisters. Upon graduating from high school she took a secretarial course in Brandon and then returned to Wawanesa where she was a secretary with the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company for 12 years. On February 5, 1930, she married her late husband, Alex and together they lived in Lauder, Moore Park, Arborg and Morris where Alex was a grain buyer for Manitoba Pool Elevators. In 1948, Alex was transferred to Winnipeg. They lived for a short time on Home Street before moving to their home on Windermere Avenue where she lived for 48 years. Over the years, Dorothy was very active in the various communities in which she lived, singing in the church choir and participating in the local community events and women's associations. She particularly enjoyed curling and curled at the Pembina Curling Club for many years. Dorothy and Alex were involved in the formation of Windermere United Church. When that congregation was disbanded, they became active members of Fort Garry United Church. Dorothy is survived by her children, Margaret (John) Mundie, Jack (Velma), Myrna Sharpe, and Ken (June); eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Left to cherish her memory are sisters, Eleanor Duce and Jean (Art) Snuggs; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her four brothers (Charles, Fred, Arthur and George), daughter-in-law Ina Stevenson and son-in-law Sigurd Sharpe. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care given to Dorothy by the staff at Fort Garry Care Centre and 3 East at Deer Lodge Centre. A celebration service of Dorothy's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, July 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd., with Cathy Kinsman officiating. ISAAC UNRAU

ISAAC UNRAU Isaac F. (Ike) Unrau, born icon June 9, 1921 in southern Manitoba, went to be with the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on July 3, 2004 in Calgary, AB at the age of 83 years, with Diane and Rick by his side. Ike leaves to mourn, his wife Diane of 40 years; son Richard (Tanya); and grandsons, Kyle and Luke, who were the apples of his eye. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Gladys (Ron), Linda, Shirley (Gordon), Bev (Lawrence); sons, Brian (Eleanor) and Cecil (Christine); as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Ted in 1987. He will be sadly missed by all that looked to him as "Dad". Ike served his country in the Second World War. A special thanks to all the nurses at the Rockyview General Hospital, ward 57, who were like part of the family, especially Connie, Susan and Rebecca who stayed with him to the end. ALICE WEISS

ALICE MARYON WEISS Alice Maryon Weiss, aged 85, passed away peacefully July 3, 2004. She was born icon May 1, 1919 in Winnipeg, the third child of Karl and Alice (Galt) Weiss. She was predeceased by her parents; and brothers, George and Karl. Maryon is survived by her sisters, Margery and Pam (Tony) of Ottawa; brother David (Fran) of Winnipeg; Karl's wife Irene of Sacramento, CA; and George's wife Orma of Castlegar, BC; as well as her 15 nieces and nephews. Maryon served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. She was with Canadian Pacific Airline for over 25 years. Mass of the Resurrection, in thanksgiving for Maryon's full life, will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 6 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius Church, Corydon at Stafford, with Rev. Fr. Joseph C. Johnson S.J. as celebrant. Interment will follow in the family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. ALEX JAMES WHITNEY JR. Peacefully, on Saturday, July 3, 2004 at St. Boniface Hospital, Alex James Whitney, Jr. passed away at the age of 52. Alex will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Helen; son Neil; daughters, Pamela, Tina and Nathalie; parents, Elsie and Alexander Whitney; sister Linda Henrickson; nephews, Larry and Fred. Alex was born icon on March 24, 1952 in Winnipeg. He worked at Sterling Glove Company for over 35 years. Alex enjoyed fishing, rock and roll and spending time with his family and his dog Mokah. WALTER YARDLEY (YAREMKEWICH) Suddenly on July 2, 2004, Walter Yardley passed away at age 74 in White Rock, BC. He is survived by his wife Doreen; daughters, Debbie (Joe) Jaksa, Darleen and Shelley; granddaughters Jessica and Tamara Jaksa; sisters Jean (Jack) Hunter and Victoria (Ed) Baker and numerous nieces and nephews. ORVILLE ANDERSON July 10, 1957 - July 7, 2004 It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing on July 7, 2004 of Orville Anderson from Little Saskatchewan First Nation at the age of 46 years. Orville was born icon and raised in Little Saskatchewan. He enjoyed playing baseball, fishing with his partners, Ray and Jerry Sumner and hunting and trapping with his grandpa Henry George. He had a quiet nature, and was content with his family and what he had in life. He will always be loved and remembered. MIRIAM JOSEPHINE ATWELL On Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Miriam Josephine Atwell passed away at the age of 64 years. Miriam will be sadly missed by her five children, Claudia, Claude, Ricky, Nancy and Charlie; sisters, Lena, Suzette, Elizabeth and Madeline Ett; nieces, Bernice and Martha; nephews, Johnny, William, George, Martin and Paul; there are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and William Constant; brothers, Sam, Moses, Jerry, Bill and Martin. FRANCES BAYLEY

FRANCES ELAINE BAYLEY On Sunday, June 20, 2004, Frances Bayley, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister-in-law and aunt, passed away peacefully with daughter Carolyn, son-in-law Len and caring staff of Oceanview ECU, Comox, BC, by her side. Frances was born icon in 1918 in High River, AB, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Weldon, a family originally from Amherst, NS. A short time after she was born, she and her brother Raymond and the family moved back to Nova Scotia. It was in the lovely maritime town of Amherst, that Frances and Ray grew up and went to school. In 1938 Frances married her first husband, H.G. Longley, of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. It was from this union that their son, Graham Jr. was born. Sadly, Captain Longley was a casualty of the assault on Normandy, France, (Juno Beach) just a little over 60 years ago. It was some time later that she met and married her second husband, Kenneth Bayley from Winnipeg, who was serving in the RCAF, Summerside, PEI. At the end of the Second World War, they moved to Winnipeg to settle down and raise their family. During this time in their lives they spent many happy hours with friends square dancing, their favourite pastime. After 30 years of living in Winnipeg, Frances and her husband moved west to retire, and spent a few years in High River, AB, before moving on to Victoria, Campbell River and finally to Courtenay, BC in 1987. Frances took great pride in her home and kept her cupboards stocked with tasty desserts as she loved to bake; her specialty being Nova Scotia Dutch rolls. She loved to paint as well as do needle point but she will mostly be remembered for her passionate love of animals, especially dogs, and over her lifetime she had many. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth in 2002 and her brother, Ray in 1994, and will be sadly missed by son Graham Bayley (Catherine) Burnaby, BC; daughter Carolyn Titus (Leonard) Campbell River, BC; sister-in-law Phyllis Ross (Bayley), Killarney, MB; granddaughter, Jessica Bayley, Burnaby, BC; grandsons, Steven Meyer, Edmonton; Scott Meyer, Vancouver; nieces, Geraldine McKay (Tom), New Glasgow, Nova Scotia; Marilyn Kittle (Bayley) Auburn, Washington; Karen Cummings (Jim) Killarney, MB and nephew Don Ross (Sandy), Winnipeg. A memorial service was held July 8 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peters Anglican Church, Campbell River, BC, the Venerable Peter Parker officiating. KATHERINE (KAE) BIRNIE (ELLIOTT) Suddenly, on May 3, 2004, Katherine Birnie, aged 78, formerly of Winnipeg, passed away in Creston, B.C. Kae is survived by daughter Anne Cote (David), Winnipeg; son Leslie Elliott, Calgary; grandchildren, Suzanne Quadling (Ed), St. Albert; Kevin, Steven and Deanne Cote of Winnipeg; great-granddaughter Jennifer Quadling; sisters, Pauline Rohatynski, Toronto; Jeanne Joy, Belleville; Helen Monaghan (Doug) Edmonton; Olga Deman, Anastasia Jurens and Tina Nichols of Winnipeg and many nieces and nephews. The daughter of Maria and Clemens Rohatynski, Kae grew up near Morden, M.B. After her marriage to Russell Elliott she lived in Ontario and France before returning to Winnipeg where she ran a coffee shop on Selkirk Ave. in what was then called Norman's Pharmacy. Kae moved to Elkford, B.C. in 1977 after marrying Jack Birnie, then retired in Creston where she became well known for her skill and enthusiasm in the local 5-pin bowling league. Kae was predeceased by husband Russell in 1965 and Jack in 1995; brother Rifleman Walter Rohatynski 1944; sister Anne Bychuk and nephew William Bychuk. Memorial services were held at the Royal Canadian Legion #29 in Creston where Kae was an active member and Poppy Fund chairperson. A private family memorial service was held later in Winnipeg.

VALDINE BORGFORD

VALDINE LYNNE BORGFORD Peacefully on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Valdine Lynne Borgford, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish her memory is her father John Borgford; her brother Brian (fiance, Leslie) and her close friends, Cora, Marc and family, Linda, Roy and family, Darlene, Peter and family, Karen and Lee. She was predeceased by her Mother Doris in 1998; her Aunt Inga, Uncle Helgi and Aunt Millicent. Valdine graduated from Red River College with her Diploma in Nursing in 1974 and began her nursing career at the Health Sciences Centre. She was a dedicated and compassionate nurse. She loved her work and the friendships she developed there. Valdine will be remembered by her family and close friends for her generosity, for being a good listener and for being willing to help in times of trouble. She enjoyed going to dinner and a movie, reading, travelling and spending time with family and friends. Valdine faced her illness with perseverance and determination, traits which helped her overcome many trials in her life. Although she will be sadly missed, we are comforted that her time of suffering has ended and we will remember all of the good times that we shared with her. Special thanks to CancerCare, Susan Finlay of palliative care, the D5 staff at HSC and Valdine's sitters. HENRIETTA (ETTA) CAMERON On Friday, July 2, 2004, Etta passed away at the Oakview Place Personal Care Home at the age of 86 years. Etta will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Isobel; daughter-in-law Anne; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; as well as her extended family in Scotland; and her dear friends in Toronto. She was predeceased by her son Harry; and son-in-law John (Archer). In keeping with Etta's wishes, a private family gathering will be held. J.D. CAMPBELL

J.D. (JOHN) CAMPBELL On Thursday, July 8, 2004, J.D. (John) Campbell passed away at West Park Manor surrounded by the love of his family, after several years of declining health. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Barby; his three daughters, Barbara (Bob) Wooldrage, Margaret, and Kathy (Jeff) Couch; grandchildren, Mike and Kate Wooldrage, Steven and Bryan Couch. He was predeceased by his sisters, Effie and Jean Campbell. J.D. was born icon in Redvers, SK on June 4, 1911. He attended United College, graduating with a Gold Medal in Mathematics. He went to teach in Benson, SK, where he met and married Barby. During the Second World War, he was part of the D-Day assault moving on to the liberation of Holland. Returning to Canada, he taught veterans and completed his Master's Degree. In September, 1948, he began his teaching career in Winnipeg with the #1 School Division, teaching at Mulvey, Isbister, Earl Grey and TecVoc where he eventually became Mathematics Department Head. He had fond memories of his colleagues and particularly his students. Their friends and the tight-knit Rosedale/Riverview community enriched their years on McNaughton Avenue. Following J.D.'s retirement in 1986, he and Barby became "Winter Texans" spending many happy years at Pine to Palm in Weslaco, TX in the winter and at Victoria Beach in the summer. Family was very important to J.D. and Barby. Summers involved trips back to Saskatchewan, to Carlyle Lake and camping expeditions. They opened their home and hearts to extended family including his father, her mother, brother, and nephew. A quiet, soft-spoken man, J.D. lived his life trying to do what was right. Small in stature, he was generous in love and spirit. The family would like to thank the staff at West Park Manor 2 East for helping J.D. and his family through this last, most difficult part of his life journey. A private family service will be held.
