MacGILLVRAY-ASHBY - Maud 1929 - 2003 Maud Ashby of Calgary passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on December 10, 2003 at the age of 74 years. Maud was born April 11, 1929 in Elgin, Scotland. She came to Canada in 1949 and worked as a real estate broker and later as a reporter and market researcher until her retirement in the early 1990s. Maud is survived by a daughter Joyce of Ontario; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ian and Penny of Calgary and Stephen of Ontario; and seven grandchildren. MAKI - Leo Raphael 1916 - 2003 Leo Raphael Maki passed away November 26, 2003 at the age of 87 years in Maple Ridge, BC. Born on September 24, 1916, in Vaasa, Finland, he immigrated to Canada in 1934. He served in the RCAF during World War II, including seven months as a POW. His family is very proud of the professional contributions he made to improve the lives of children through the Boys Clubs of Canada and the William Roper Hull Residential Treatment Centre for Adolescents. He also served with compassion as director of various seniors' facilities. He leaves, as his legacy, his passion for life, his love of beauty and appreciation of excellence, his intellectual curiosity and love of learning, his intense and passionate love of music, and his humanitarianism. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Christine; his daughters, Linda (Steve), Susan (Harry), Kathlyne (John), and Michelle (Mike); his grandchildren, Jeff (Heather), Krista (Neville), Todd, Lee (Colin), Michael, Joey and Isabella; and his great-grandchildren, Ben and Declan. MARGETAK - Mary 1933 - 2003 Mary Margetak passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at the Foothills Hospital. Her strong, quiet fight for life has ended and she now lives in a better place. Mary was the beloved wife of Lud for the past fifty years. She brought into this world and loved unconditionally, Les (Krys), Linda and Jamie (Lesley). She also leaves to mourn, her pride and joy, her five grandchildren, Candace, Michael, Colter, Veronica and Thomas. Mary's quiet spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. Although her health failed her many times, she persevered and never complained. Mary was born in Michel, BC and lived all her married life in Frank, Alberta. She cared for many less fortunate then her and especially loved children. One of her fondest memories was a trip to Disneyland, as she loved watching the joy in children's faces. To this end, if friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated for the Children's Wish Foundation (No. 271, 339 - 50 Avenue S.E., Calgary, T2G 2B3 - www.childrenswish.ca). The Foundation fulfills the wishes of children with high risk, life-threatening illnesses; many of these wishes are trips to the Magic Kingdom. McDOWELL - Dorothy (Dodie) Lynn 1945 - 2003 Dodie McDowell (nee Huber) passed away, surrounded by peace and love, on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at the Rosedale Hospice at the age of 58 years. Dodie fought a courageous battle against ovarian cancer for over two years. Dodie was a rare light, brightening the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. A true testament to her spirit was the steady stream of family and friends who came to see her and be in her presence while she was still in body. One of Dodie's greatest joys was having the opportunity to travel through Europe this summer with her best friend and partner Robert (Bob) Wade. On August 27, 2003, while in Europe, Dodie and Bob said "I do", turning their devoted friendship into a beautiful marriage. Dodie will be fondly remembered for her loving and compassionate nature, tender heart, life-loving spirit, and for bringing people together in celebration. A Celebration of Dodie's Life will be held in the Lobby of the Martha Cohen Theatre (215 - 8 Avenue S.E.) on Monday, December 15, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. Friends and family are invited to skate on Olympic Plaza after the Service, so bring your skates. NELSON - Henry McGiven (Hank) 1924 - 2003 Hank Nelson, beloved husband of Betty for fifty-five years, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the age of 79 years, with his wife and their loving children by his side. Hank was born in Regina in 1924. After high school he joined the R.C.A.F. as a Pilot Officer and attended the University of Manitoba after World War II. He worked in the oil and gas marketing industry his entire career. Initially, he was with Royalite for twenty years, nineteen years with Union Oil and Husky Oil and Highwood Communications for four years before retiring in 1989. Hank had two primary passions in life, his family, whom he was so proud of and the numerous friends whom were able to share special moments with this caring, giving, thoughtful, and loving man. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Lesley Ewing, her husband John and their two children, Andrea and Geoff; his son Guy Nelson, his wife Leslie and their three children, Ryan, Trevor and Liseanne; brother John, his wife Carol Nelson and their family; and their sister Agnes Crouse. Throughout his personal and professional life he touched many with his considerate and compassionate nature, along with his quiet sense of humour. Besides his loving wife Donna, his life's companion of thirty-three years, Ted is survived by two sons, Brad and Doug; mother Pauline Hafichuk; a brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Nicolette Hafichuk; and a sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Clayton Shick. KAMMER - Gertrude Else 1912 - 2004 Gertrude Kammer passed away April 2, 2004 at the age of 92 years and will be dearly missed by all that knew her. She was born on January 19, 1912 in Germany and in 1952, with her family, she immigrated to Calgary. Gertrude will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Inge (Bernie) Biener and grandchildren, Tyson and Tanja (fiance Roger). Gertrude was a "grand" lady with great determination, independence, love of people and lived each day to the fullest. A loving mother and Oma, the family deeply mourns her passing, but takes comfort in knowing that she lived a long life filled with love, happiness and friends and will always cherish her memory. Although not close in her life, Gertrude was also the stepmother to Hans (Maureen) Kammer and their children, Adam and Laura. She was predeceased by her first husband Wilhelm Knoop in 1939 and their son Gunther in 1944, and her second husband George Kammer in 1989. KARASZ - Irene Irene Karasz, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, April 4, 2004 at the age of 80 years.
