PAUL BERGER January 6, 1923 - August 10, 2004 Our beloved husband, father and zaida passed away peacefully at the Sharon Home at the age of 81 years, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Eva; daughters, Yvette Berger and Sharon (Charles) Eisbrenner; son Lindsay (Aileen) Berger and grandson
s, Simon and Adam Eisbrenner. Paul was born
in Lvov, Poland (Lemberg). He was taken to a Russian work camp at the age of 16, when the Second World War started and joined the Red Army two years later. His mechanical inclination led to his occupations as a mechanic and a driver. He drove trucks, tanks and later a staff car for his colonel. Paul and Eva came to Winnipeg in 1950 and considered Winnipeg a paradise compared to war-ravaged Europe. He bought a truck as soon as he could, and quickly earned a living buying and selling scrap metal and later selling fruits and vegetables in rural Manitoba. His natural friendliness and gift for languages earned him many loyal customers amongst the farmers, as he could talk with them in their own language, whether English, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, German, French or Yiddish. During the winters, he would cut leather in Winnipeg's bustling garment industry, and later he made this a full time career. He worked at Rice Sportswear and later as the building manager at the Monash Manor. He was active in the General Monash Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Paul made friends easily, and up until a few months ago, he was still meeting and remembering friends from 25 or 30 years ago. He had an incredible joie de vivre, and was passionate about world affairs, politics and especially events in Israel. He was willing and able to argue with exuberant intelligence about almost any topic. Even though the Second World War cut his formal education short, he made up for it by always having his nose buried in a book, magazine or newspaper. He instilled a love of learning and intellectual pursuit in his children. He was kind, playful, passionate and fearless and had many other good qualities too numerous to mention. Paul's family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff of the Sharon Home, who made a difficult time easier to bear. DAVID HENRY BLAIR David Henry Blair, 81, passed away in Winnipeg, Monday, August 16, 2004 at the Victoria General Hospital after a brief illness. Born in St. John's, NL, he was the son of the late Kenmure Maitland and Anna May (Davis) Blair. He was a Second World War Veteran with the RCAF and was retired from Canada Customs. As well, he was an avid collector and reader of science fiction literature, throughout his life. He was predeceased by his brother, John and is survived by his wife, Mildred; sons, Robert (Gloria) and Donald of Winnipeg; daughter Anne (Ron Cutler) of Halifax and grandchildren, Joshua, Rachel, Elizabeth, Victoria and Stephen. Cremation has taken place. Private service and Burial of ashes to follow at a later date in St. John's, NL. AUGUSTIN BOISSINOT On August 7, 2004, Augustin Boissinot passed away at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home at the age of 77 years. Gus will be sadly missed by his sister-in-law Rose Boissinot; nephew Andy (Donna); niece Claudette Kullman (Chris); great-nephew Manny and great-nieces, Carly and Holly. He was predeceased by his parents Emanuel and Victoria (nee Carriere); and by his brother Fern. JOHN A. DUNLOP BURROWS (JACK) December 16, 1912 - August 17, 2004 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jack at Victoria General Hospital at age 91. He was predeceased by his dear wife Rhoda; two sisters, Jean of Winnipeg, Mihaile of Ontario; his parents, Janet and Andrew. Jack will be lovingly remembered by niece Lee MacLeod (Don) of Ontario; great-nephews, Ross and Alex; nephew Lon Palmer of Ontario; nephew Barry Hemenway of New Westminster, BC; lifelong friends, Beryl McDiarmid and Geraldine Lane of Winnipeg, Ralph McDiarmid (Lynn) and family of Victoria, BC, Chris Lane (Connie) and family of Regina, SK. He was employed by both the CPR and CNR as an accountant. He enjoyed attending with his longtime friend Jim McDiarmid the year's annual reunion of former employees of the CPR's Royal Alexandra Hotel. Jack will always be remembered for his sense of humour, infectious laugh, phenomenal memory and his beautiful singing voice. DAN CHRISTOPHERSEN It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dan Christophersen on August 14, 2004 at his home in Edmonton, AB at the age of 74. Dan was born
and raised in Winnipeg and attended Greenway and General Wolfe Schools. He was a lifelong barbershopper and enjoyed entertaining and performing with his quartet "The Unbalanced Four" across Canada, the U.S. and Hawaii. A master carpenter and a skilled craftsman he could build and fix everything. He worked as a building inspector for the Alberta Government until his retirement. Dan loved golf and will be missed by his playing partner and buddy, his nephew David Palahnuk. Predeceased by brother Earl; sisters, Ella, Alice, Lily and Betty. He will be sadly missed by his wife Carol, son Mitchell and daughter Charlotte and their families; sisters, Minna Brown of Truro, NS and Enid Gillespie of Winnipeg; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Danish Lutheran Church in Edmonton on September 10.

CHARLOTTE CHRISTIE COOK On August 18, 2004, God put his arms around our mom, Charlotte, and peacefully led her home. She is now safe and without pain in God's home, reunited with Dad. Charlotte Christie Cook (nee Chartier) was born
on March 15, 1922, in Grand Rapids, MB, grew up there and lived there most of her life.Mom and Dad were married on July 24, 1939 and spent 44 happy years together. Mom worked at various jobs including Manitoba Hydro, and as a custodian at the hospital at Grand Rapids, and at a camp at Kelsey. She worked cleaning cabins at Hobb's Resort in Cross Lake and in Grand Rapids. Mom also spent many seasons in different camps trapping and fishing with her husband Neal. Mom enjoyed doing bead work, playing cards, bingo, and visiting in the neighbourhood.Charlotte was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.She spent many hours with her "babies", the more there were, the happier she was. Her first priority was her family and making sure everyone was okay.Mom had a strong faith and was ready to meet the Lord. Mom was a longtime member of the C.W.L. and enjoyed participating in the weekly sewing meetings. Mom lived in her own home until the fall of 2000. At this time, due to her health, she then resided with Anne and Leonard. She moved to the Pinawachi Personal Care Home in Norway House for a short period. Surviving are her children, her daughters, Florence (Jack) George, Jessie (Alfred) Anderson, Anne (Leonard) Flett, Rubena (Albert) Campbell and Rose Wilkins; her sons, Raymond (Joyce), George (Ethel), William (Edna) Absolom; her sister-in-law Edith Chartier; 51 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Jonas and Alice Chartier; her beloved husband Neal; her oldest son Jonas; and daughter-in-law Victoria; her grandsons, Douglas Cook, Geoffrey Cook, Douglas Flett, Gordie Cook; her daughter-in-law Eva Cook; son-in-law Errol Wilkins; and great-grandson Neal Cook; her sisters, Clara (Gabe) Dorian, Angelique (Dan) Cook, Josephine (Isadore) Mercredie; her brothers, Mac Chartier and Henry Chartier. She will be lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren, respectively, Sean (Michelle), Lisa (Sean), Thomas, Matthew, Josephine; Kevin (Tracy), Daphne, Courtney, Damian; Jon, Marnie, Jessica, Josh, Jason and Kenny's daughter Cheyenne; her brothers, Dennis, Jim, Frank (Barb); and sister Karen; aunts and uncles and many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her extended family the Courchenes, numerous friends and her beloved cat Spike. Bea resided at 425 Elgin Ave. since 2002 and quickly made many friends. If she wasn't home watching wrestling or babysitting her grandchildren, you'd probably find her in the neighbourhood bingo hall. When she'd win, it was always spent on her grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of GH4 and GA4 at the Health Sciences Centre for respecting her wishes and taking great care of her during her many visits there. Bea was a strong willed woman who fought a long, hard battle with breast cancer which eventually spread throughout. No matter how sick she got, she made time for her grandchildren, whom she loved so dearly. A wake will be held on Monday, August 23 at 7:00 p.m. with lunch to be served at the Aboriginal Funeral Chapel, 724 Selkirk Ave. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 24 at 3:00 p.m., also at the chapel with Rev. JOHANN FRANZ
JOHANN DAVID FRANZ On August 10, 2004 after a short battle with cancer, our beloved father and Opa Johann David (Hans) Franz, aged 79, was reunited with his wife Ella, in heaven. Johann is survived by his four children, their spouses and eight grandchildren, daughter Margaret Wonko, son-in-law Ken and grandchildren, Matt, Amber and Candice; son Bill Franz, daughter-in-law Pearl (nee Debooy) and granddaughters, Jane and Anna; daughter Ingrid Pawlosky, son-in-law Richard and granddaughter Nadia; daughter Monika Franz-Lien, son-in-law Jeff and granddaughters, Andrea and Emily. He will always be remembered by his sister Margarete (Gretel) Muendt, brother-in-law Adam, and their family in Germany and Russia; mother-in-law, Amalie Rupp, in Winnipeg; sister-in-law Lydia Dyck and her husband Peter, and brother-in-law Hardy Rupp and his wife Gwen, and their families, from Mississauga, ON. He was predeceased by his wife Ella in May 2003, his father David Franz in 1944 and his mother Elisabeth Franz in 1975, as well as by four of his five siblings. Johann was born
on February 24, 1925, in Andreburg, Ukraine. At the brave young age of 16, Johann left his mother and sister behind in German-occupied Ukraine, to join the German Army as a translator and field messenger. He saw his mother and sister briefly in 1943, but as his family was sent to Siberia shortly thereafter, he never saw his mother again. He was reunited with his sister, Gretel, in Germany in 1993, after 50 years apart. Johann met his future wife Ella, and her family in a refugee camp in Backnang, Germany in 1947. They were married on June 10, 1950 in Winnipeg. Johann worked for 40 years as a cutter and pattern-maker with Canadian Sportswear in Winnipeg and enjoyed the multi-cultural and multi-lingual atmosphere. He was also a devoted member of First Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. He served as a deacon for 25 years, visiting the elderly and those that were ill. His pride and joy, after his children and grandchildren, was the cottage at Pinawa Bay. He also enjoyed travelling with Ella, and especially camping, boating, and fishing (in later years, with the grandchildren). A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 24 at 10:30 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Ave. at Alverstone Street. The family is grateful for the love and concern shown by friends and neighbours, and wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of the Grace General Hospital 3 West, and the Grace Hospice for their wonderful care. LILLIAN ELEANOR FRIGHT (nee DINNEY) It is with great sadness that our family announces the death of our sister, mother and grandmother Lillian Eleanor Fright. Lillian passed away in Winnipeg, on Thursday, August 19, 2004 with her family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Bertrum (1977) and leaves to mourn her five children, Gay Anne, Bradley, Kelly (Leah), Cory, and Blair (Sandy); seven grandchildren, Todd, Lindsey, Shea, Kyle, Tyler, Trenton and Brett; beloved brother George Dinney (Nina) of Denver; sister-in-law Marge Dinney; as well as many nieces and nephews. Lillian retired in 1985 after 21 years of service for the Winnipeg Police Department, Training Division. She had two very special longtime friends in the Police Department, Don Wardrop and Lawrence Klippenstein who were there for her after her husband's death and for many years that followed. She was fondly known as "Inspector Fright" and developed many lasting friendships in the Police Department, one's that she treasured deeply. We tend to place value on the lives of those who have built great wealth or celebrity rather than the significant contributions of our world by ordinary people. Lillian was a ordinary person who led an extraordinary life. Wealth and celebrity she had none. Kindness, courage, hope, and most of all love are words that best describe the spirit of Lillian. Her greatest accomplishment was to raise her five children on her own after the early passing of her husband. She provided her children with the values of honesty, trust and compassion that have taken them from childhood to mature adult. Over the past many years Lillian was plagued with many chronic illnesses that had taken their toll on her health. At the end of her life she had no complaints or regrets but only thankfulness for her life's experience. She was never ordinary; to her family and friends she was always extraordinary and valued. Death is a passage at a point in time. It passes but memory lasts forever. We are left with wonderful memories and photos of a woman who was intelligent, funny, caring, dedicated to her family, strong, hard working and unselfish. In accordance with Lillian's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial service will take place on Tuesday, August 24 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Honourary pallbearers will be her seven grandchildren. CURTIS LIONEL GRAPENTINE April 25, 1936 - August 17, 2004 At peace in his home, with loved ones near, our dear Curt passed to a better place. Left to mourn Curtis are his wife Elsa and her son Mathew, mother Mary Grapentine, brothers, Lorne (Lori) and Lex (Janet), sisters, Sandy (Barry) and Janice (Richard), sons, Lee and Matthew, daughters, Cara and Kristin, grandchildren, Michael, Marina, Taelan, Sophie and Luke. Curtis was predeceased by his father Lawrence. The life long friends he made during his younger days, during his baseball years, and later, by his friends and colleagues in the grain industry will sadly miss Curt. A special thank you goes to those who took such good care of Curt while he was in hospital and to those who worked so hard to bring him home in his final days. Thank you to Dr. Johnston and Erin for trying so hard. And lastly, thank you Curt, for being who you were and enriching all of our lives. We love you. ELLEN EVELYN GREER (nee FRAZER) Sadly, on Monday, August 16, 2004, Evelyn passed away at Concordia Hospital in her 81st year. Evelyn grew up in Swan River, MB and, after a short time in the Army during the Second World War, remained in Winnipeg for many years. In 1971, she and her husband Norm moved to Wickenburg, AZ for 20 great years. They then moved to Abbotsford, BC until a year ago when she returned to Winnipeg. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Norm; her parents, Richard (Pat) and May Frazer; and her brothers, Raymond, Mel, Harold and Bob. Evelyn will be missed by all who loved her. Her daughters and their husbands, Pat and Howard Boggitt, Debby and Don Doerksen; her grandchildren, Lisa and Jim Roberts, Laura and Les Halsell, Kelly Chidlow and Sherry Shindruk and Korri Chidlow and April Mardynalka. Evelyn's greatest joy were her great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Roberts, Syndey and Ashley Halsell and Clariess and Kayla Chidlow. She will also be dearly missed by her sister, Beth Hunt and her husband George and family; sisters-in-law, Bena Frazer and family, Peggy Greer and her very special friend, Tom Boyd, who showed Mom the world. DARCIE ANNE HALL January 26, 1980 - August 18, 2004 Sadly on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the age of 24 years, after a lengthy struggle, Darcie has found peace. Darcie leaves to mourn father Garry of BC, mother Jody (Cliff), sister Koreene (Brian), nephews Terrik, Jayden, Corbin; grandmothers Mae Hall, Cora Baker, aunts, uncles and cousins as well as her friend Lois Fysh. Darcie was a spiritual person who was able to embrace life through her art and friends and is now happy to be with her Lord.
