IDA ALICE McLEAN November 23, 1923 - August 21, 2004 It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, sister-in-law, and mother-in-law, Ida Alice McLean (nee Anderson) of Fairford on Saturday, August 21, 2004. She leaves to cherish her memory, her 13 children: five daughters, Eileen (Alex Spence), Harriet McLean, Shirley (Mark Grindey), Hilda (Howard Leveque), Runa McMahon; and eight sons, Robert (Beverley) McLean, Chris (Karen) McLean, Gordon (Joanne) McLean, John (Sheila) McLean, Raymond (Jean) McLean, Allan (Gladys) McLean, Jacob (Bernice) McLean, and Daniel (Sharilyn) McLean; 31 grandchildren
, 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention; her sister-in-law Priscilla (Roy) Thompson, and brother-in-law, Steve McLean. Ida was predeceased by her husband, Noel Robert McLean on May 31, 1992 and most recently, by her sister Harriet Anderson on June 6, 2004, and nephew William Joseph Anderson in 2004. In their early years of marriage, Ida and her husband, Noel, gave their hearts to the Lord as their personal Saviour. Noel became a minister of the gospel shortly thereafter. Ida's favourite scripture was "Train up a child in a way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Prov. 22:6. They would never miss a Sunday morning to bring all of their children to a church service taking up two rows of front pews. The girls would be wearing dresses and all the boys wore suits. Today, all of the 13 children are saved and faithfully serving the Lord. Nine of them are now ministers of the gospel including two grandsons. When Ida turned 80 years old, she wanted all of her children to come together to see her. She told them that her work to raise up a family of ministers was finished. She indicated that she had lived and enjoyed her life to the fullest and that her time on earth was coming to an end with a longing desire to be with her Lord and Saviour. She encouraged her children to love one another and minister the gospel. After she blessed them, all her children got up and quoted scripture found in the book of Proverbs 31:28 where it states, "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; . . .". Her children all together said to their Mom, "Mom, You are blessed!". "As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and forever," Is. 59:21. The viewing will be held at the Arnason Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., the Wake service on Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m. at Fairford Pentecostal Church, and the Funeral on Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Fairford with interment to follow at the St. Helens Cemetery with Pastor Rev. Alex James Anderson officiating. The active Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Steven Leveque, Jason Spence, Marty McLean, Aaron McLean, John Alfred McLean Jr., and Aaron Leveque. Crossbearer will be her granddaughter Christina McMahon. The Honorary Pallbearers and Ushers will be her seven adopted sons; the Anderson Brothers, John, Walter, Alex James, Joe, Sam, Harold and Brian. The family would like to thank the doctor, nurses and staff at the Lakeshore General Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the excellent and compassionate care they provided. The family would like to extend their thanks to Maxine and Clifford Anderson, Wilma and Garf Sinclair, Bertha Sumner, Evangeline Traverse, and Edith Gagen, and Marina Letandre for the time they spent with us and for the lunches and snacks they brought to the hospital. You are all very dedicated and have a special place in our hearts forever for the kindness you have shown. A very special thanks to Eva Woodford who was there for us when our mother passed on. GORDON MILNE
GORDON SHEPPARD MILNE It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing Gordon Milne, following a lengthy illness, on Saturday, August 21, 2004 at St. Boniface Hospital, with his family by his side. Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 58 years, Evelyn; his daughter Lynda (Geoff) Dean; his son Lorne (Muggs); and son Tony; his beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Jeremy, David, Ashley, Jordan, Taylor and Sean. He will be sadly missed by his sister Doris Woodcock; nieces, Laura and Lois; nephew Paul; and cousins, Ian Milne and David Moir and their families. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Jessie and David in 1987 and his sister Shirley in 1994. He grew up in Edmonton, AB and joined the R.C.A.F. in 1941 and was a Lancaster pilot with 5 Group completing his tour of 30 sorties and receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. Gordon worked for Wilson Gregory Lumber Company for many years. He was a past president of Wartime Pilots and Observers Association, also a past president of the Canakeena Club. Dad was a member of St. Boniface Golf Club and the Wildewood Seniors' Curling Club. He was a member of the United Church of Meadowood. An original member his longstanding poker group, for over 30 years, he spent many pleasant evenings with his buddies! Gordon and Evelyn had a strong and loving marriage and set a wonderful example for their children and grandchildren. Our Dad was a caring father who was always there for us. He was a one-of-a-kind "Poppa" for his grandchildren. Thanks to our cassette tapes, we will continue to enjoy Dad's wonderful piano playing in his own unmistakable style! "He lived a life worth celebrating!" A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. in Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. His family would like to thank the many people who supported Gordon and his family, during his illness, in particular, Dr. R. EDDY MOQUIN Surrounded by his loving family, Eddy peacefully passed away at the St Boniface Hospital, on August 21, 2004 at the age of 78 years. Eddy was born
on March 26, 1926, in St. Joseph, MB, one of 13 children. He shared 54 years with his wife Eva Sarrasin, with whom he had nine children that he loved very much. He was a man of great faith, whose trust in Our Blessed Mother was for him a source of strength and hope. He was a very hard working man who always had more than one job at a time. He was proud to have been a member of the Army, spent most of his life helping out his neighbours. Eddy was a member of the Legion and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus. He really enjoyed his 15 winters in Arizona. He was predeceased by his son Alfred, his son-in-law Fernand, his parents, eight brothers and one sister. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Eva, Diane (feu Fernand Martin), Andre (Debbie Kidd), Richard (Carmen Rivard), Sr. Marie (Filles de la Croix), Line (Denis Bouchard), Annette (Roger Bouchard), Claude (Jacqueline Turenne), Monique (Norman Bouchard) and Sr. Evelyn Pierret which he lovingly adopted as his eldest, 23 grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his three sisters, Rita (Leon), Clara, Georgina; sisters-in-law, Angela, Marie, Madeleine (Tony) and Hermine (Adelard); and brother-in-law Noel. Prayers will be held Wednesday, August 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, August 26 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Joachim Roman Catholic Church in La Broquerie. The interment will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care they received from all health workers that have helped them through this difficult period. Special thanks to Fr. Louis Vielfaure and Father Roland Lanoie for being with them at the end of Eddy's earthly journey. RUTH MARIE PERKINS (nee RIDDICK) It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their dear mother, companion, grandma, aunt and friend Ruth Marie Perkins (nee Riddick) in her 83rd year. Ruth passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Riverdale Health Centre in Rivers, MB. She will be sadly missed by Eric; daughters, Linda Pilat (Jan), Lesley and Jennifer of London, ON, Margaret Marriott (Doug), Rob and Christina. Brothers, Robert (Joyce) Riddick of Modesto, CA and Thomas Riddick of Brandon; and sister-in-law Margaret Riddick of Winnipeg. Ruth is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, George and Raymond; and sister-in-law Norma. A celebration of Ruth's life was held on Saturday, August 21 at St. James Anglican Church, Rivers at 2:00 p.m. Ruth was born
in Rivers, February 24, 1922, where she spent her early years until moving to The Pas with her family. After finishing school, she went to Winnipeg where she was employed by the T. Eaton company. A few years later Ruth returned to Rivers with her two daughters and was employed by McKenzie's Department Store and then Manitoba Telephone System. Ruth was employed with MTS for 32 years as an operator, and chief operator and later when Rivers converted to dial, she was employed in their Winnipeg office in Investigation and Fraud. While living in Winnipeg, she met Eric and together they enjoyed many years of camping and travelling with the Good Sam Club. Retirement years brought them both back to Rivers. A special part of their life together was their shared love for their terrier Danny. Ruth was a beautiful knitter and seamstress. She spent many hours creating sweaters, afghans, baby outfits and shawls which she generously passed on to her family and friends. Her talent in sewing resulted in beautiful dresses, skating and dance costumes. Her love and generosity will be missed by all who knew her. Goldie is also survived by her grandchildren, Ella MacLeod (Alan), Ronald Sears, Carrie Sears all of Winnipeg and Cheri Seabrook of Paris, France as well as Morley and Deanne Smart of Stonewall, Manitoba. Her two great-grandchildren, Savannah Sears and Justin Mann, had the special privilege of knowing the love of their special nana. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. EDWIN HENRY SMITH Peacefully, on August 20, 2004 at the Seven Oaks Hospital after a courageous battle with diabetes., Ed went home to be with his Lord Saviour at the age of 71 years. Ed is survived by his loving wife Lila of 47 years; daughters, Janice (Wayne), Kim (Norman), Karen (Doug); and grandchildren who he dearly loved, Jeremy, Jenine, Jordan, Preston, Phylisha, Pamela, Brittany, Peter, Leanne; stepgrandson Nicolas; sister Dolly (Bert); brothers, Errol, Graham (Ada), Leslie and George (Dale); along with several nieces, nephews, in-laws and many friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Susan; parents, Alex and Mildred; brothers, Jim and Harold; sisters, Betty, Velma, Ruth, Bev and Fern. Ed was born
and raised in Stoney Point/Victoria Beach area. He worked at several jobs, retiring from Department of Highways in 1995 with 22 years of service. Ed and Lila were married on August 10, 1957. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. Ed enjoyed all sports and playing table games, he especially loved to 5-pin bowl, horse shoes and playing golf. He was an active member of Wayside Gospel Chapel and for many years served on the board of Faith Bible Camp. He touched many lives in his quiet and gentle ways and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. An evening service will be held on Tuesday, August 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk. BETTY SWAIN
BETTY SWAIN (nee FORSYTH) Betty left us peacefully on August 22, 2004 shortly after returning from a large family gathering the previous day in Lac Du Bonnet. Born in Ericsdale, MB on October 28, 1915 and christened Elizabeth Alice Forsyth, Betty was the youngest of five siblings. Her parents were Mabel and James Forsyth. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Douglas Swain, her brother Jack and her sister Margaret Dawson. She leaves her sister Mary Curtis; her brother Jim; and her four children and their spouses, Stafford (Karen), Grant (Lynne), Graham (Joanne) and Shelley (Brian). Mom is also survived by seven grandchildren and a new great-granddaughter. Betty also leaves a large extended 'clan' and the many friends she made over the years. Growing up in Ericsdale, Betty experienced the rigours of pioneering farm life. This developed a lifelong interest in nature such that she could identify birds by their calls and trees by their bark. A move to Portage la Prairie as a teenager and the end of formal schooling caused her to become an entrepreneur at age 15 when she opened a beauty parlour in Portage. Later she worked as a hairdresser in Winnipeg. The late 1960s saw her embark on a successful real estate career where her outgoing nature, enthusiasm and sense of humour shone. She acquired many new friends in her travels and we children often experienced her becoming an even better friend to our friends than we were. Her recreational interests were many. She played organized baseball, canoed and danced at the Winnipeg Canoe Club, fished and golfed with Dad, hunted with her siblings, nephews and friends, learned to swim alongside her children, bowled in our Wildwood Park days, and curled at the Wildewood Club. She was always a great fan of the Bombers and any of the athletic pursuits of her children and grandchildren. She also loved to fly kites, do crossword puzzles and stain-glass windows, pick berries, can fruits and jams, knit, sew, cook, work in her gardens in Winnipeg and at the Dorothy Lake cottage and go for walks in the great outdoors. Mom loved music and she enjoyed attending the many Barbershop Quartet and Sweet Adeline events that Dad produced. As her vision faded in the last few years, her ability to recall the lyrics of many songs kept those nursing home sing-a-long sessions lively. Mom received more than excellent care in the last several years of declining health. We would like to thank the staff members at Misericordia (2nd floor) and Riverview (3C) for their efforts and dedication. VERA THOMAS (BABA) July 28, 1913 - August 23, 2004 After a courageous battle with cancer with her family by her side in Peguis, MB, Vera went home to be with her Lord and Saviour. Vera will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her two daughters, Millie Steigerwalt (Horst) of Edmonton, AB and Betty Dalkeith (Herb) of Chilliwack, BC. Her brother Harry Cook (Carrie) of Winnipeg, and her brother-in-law Lloyd Penwarden of Kingston, ON. Her son-in-law Peter Houle of Winnipeg, MB; daughters-in-law, Doreen Thomas of Winnipeg, Melvina Thomas of Peguis, MB, Eva Sinclair of Edmonton, and Barb Thomas of Wetaskiwin, AB. Vera had 26 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Vera was predeceased by her parents, Beatrice and Colin Cook; husband Jack Thomas in 1970; her sons, Harvey Thomas, Jack Thomas, Sie Thomas, Richard Thomas; and daughter Myrna Houle. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Maude Penwarden and Mabel Smith; her brother Bill Cook and great-grandson Daylan Sinclair. Vera was well known and respected in her community. She shared her faith and beliefs with all who knew her as she was a strong and devoted Christian. We will never forget all that she has taught us about life, the Lord and Love. The family and friends will always remember visits with her and her homemade cooking. She touched and gave many strengths and beliefs during hard and difficult times. Family, friends and relatives will always love and cherish her memories. We will always love you Baba. The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at the Percy E. Moore Hospital who helped us through this difficult time. We would also like to express our gratitude to all of her friends who came to see her and for all the prayers that were said.
