BERTHA CHARLTON

BERTHA CHARLTON 1923 - 2004 On August 25, 2004 Bertha, beloved wife of the late Leonard Charlton passed away peacefully at Grace Hospital. Bertha was born icon in Winnipeg and grew up in St. Vital. She and Len were married in 1947 and had a wonderful 54 years together. In retirement they enjoyed many winters in Arizona and later in Victoria. A member of the McKinnon Guild for over 30 years Bertha loved the time she spent as a volunteer in the "Nearly New Shop". Bertha and Leonard were Members of Knox United Church and later Charleswood United where they were proud to sponsor one of the beautiful new stained glass windows, which Bertha dedicated to Len's memory last year. Bertha was predeceased by her parents, her sister and brother, and in 2001 by her devoted husband and best friend, Len. She will be greatly missed by her cousins, Gerry and Luain Adair and her many very special friends. Bertha's strong spirit, her friendship and love will remain with all of us who loved her dearly. "The special years will not return, when we were all together. But with the love within our hearts, you will walk with us forever." Private graveside interment will take place in St. Vital Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 31 in Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. Flowers gratefully declined. GILBERT JOSEPH CHEVREFILS September 4, 1942 - August 25, 2004 It is with great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of our brother Gil in Prince George, BC. He was predeceased his by father George in 1979; and mother Lucienne in 1985. He leaves to mourn his passing his sisters, Yvette David, Adele Kulbaba and Diane Daignault (Chico). He is also survived by his nieces, Diane, Brenda, Sherry and Nichole; his nephews, Rick, Michel and Rob; and his great-nieces, Stephanie, Brittany, Randene and Janna; and stepnieces, Kristen and Skye. Gilbert was a kind and honest man with a great sense of humour. He had a 30 year career with the Department of Transportation. He started his career as an electrician in northern Manitoba. He moved to British Columbia over 25 years ago as an electrical supervisor at the Airports in Terrace and Prince George. He retired from the Department of Transportation 2002 but continued to work at the Prince George Airport on contract with Northern Electric. Prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31 at Sobering Funeral Chapel, Beausejour, MB. A celebration of his life will be held by a funeral mass Wednesday, September 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Notre Dame du Lac Roman Catholic Church in Lac Du Bonnet, MB. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Rick Blom, Michel Daignault, Rob Daignault, John Sauer, Scott Chabluk and family friend Comrie Klevin. The honorary pallbearers will be his nieces, Diane Sauer, Brenda Blom, Sherry Kulbaba and Nicky Chabluk. On behalf of Gil's memory, a donation may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation. OSIAS CLEMENT

OSIAS CLEMENT March 17, 1919 - August 24, 2004 Osias Clement passed away peacefully at the age of 85 years. Osias was predeceased by his parents, William and Delia (nee Bourgois); his brothers, Ulysses and Joseph; his son Paul and his grandsons, Edward and Wayne Herie. He is survived by his wife Florida (nee Desrochers); his brothers, Alphonse, Arthur and Denis; his sisters, Irma Gosselin, Florence Preteau and Blanche Bohemier; his daughters, Eva Herie, Rita Boissonneault, Paulette Schierling, Madeline Wuzinski and his sons, Richard, Armand and Claude. He leaves behind numerous grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Ozzy was quick with a joke and to light up your smoke! He enjoyed playing the violin, as well as the accordion. He devoted much of himself to the church, attending and participating in many of the related activities throughout his life. He enjoyed the valuable support provided by his grandson Charles Boissonneault; who helped Ozzy live independently till his passing. A memorial mass will be held at the St. Boniface Cathedral, 190 de la Cathedrale Ave. at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 30 with interment to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery (located on Archibald). EDITH COCKSHOTT

EDITH LILY COCKSHOTT On August 23, 2004, Edith passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Edie was born icon in Winnipeg on January 16, 1910 to Wilfred A. and Lily F. Cockshott. She was predeceased by her brother Wilfred Cecil Cockshott in 1977; her nephew Harry's wife Florence in 1999; and her sister-in-law Gladys (Jamie) Cockshott on May 31, 2004. Edith, affectionately called Edie, spent her later years living at the Westhaven retirement residence, 3033 Portage Ave., Winnipeg. Edie enjoyed the many social activities available there, the friends she met at the residence, and the loving care given to her by the staff. The Cockshott family extends our most sincere gratitude to all of you who made her days so pleasurable these past several years. Edie is survived by her two nephews, Harry Cockshott and Art Cockshott (Joan); her great-nieces and nephews, Gary (Caryl), Carol (Yale), Shirley, Linda, Robert (Inge), Grant (Aynsley); and her great-great-nephews, Owen, Benjamin and Noam. Edie adored children and the three little ones added much enjoyment to her life. Edie was employed for several years at Monarch Lumber and later, until her retirement, at Cargill Grain in Winnipeg. Edie leaves behind the cherished memory of a woman much loved for her kindness and compassionate manner which endeared her to all those who were fortunate enough to know her. Edie's long life may be attributed to her happy personality and positive attitude toward life. In accordance with Edie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, August 30 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with Rev. Gordon Shields officiating. KENNETH LLOYD COWIE Peacefully passed away at home in Guelph, ON, on August 25, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 46. Beloved husband of Sandra (Weir); and loved father of Lynne, Sarah and Amanda, all of Guelph; loving son of Len and Edith Cowie of Winnipeg, MB; dear brother of Cecil (Delaine and Shannon, Christopher) Cowie of Calgary and Lorna (George and Shayla, Kelby) Wildeman of Winnipeg; son-in-law of Phyllis Weir (Robert Bernhardt) of Winnipeg; brother-in-law of Keith (Joyce and Alex) Weir of Toronto, Steven (Cathy and Christine, Cynthia, Colleen) Weir of Colonsay, SK, and John (Sandi) Weir of Nashville, TN; predeceased by his father-in-law Alex Weir. Ken was born icon in Winnipeg in 1958 and received his education there. Ken and Sandra were married in Winnipeg in 1980. He was active in sports - hockey, golf, skiing, hunting and baseball. He competed in the Canadian Jr. Fastball championships with the Winnipeg team. He golfed as much as possible until recently. He started his career in 1980 with Coats Bell (J&P Coats) in Winnipeg and was transferred to Arthur, ON, in 1999. A special thanks to family and friends for their love and support over the years as well as Coats Bell, fellow employees and customers. JAMES CUNNIN

JAMES GERARD CUNNIN 1923 - 2004 With deep sadness we announce the death of Jim Cunnin at Health Sciences Centre on the morning of August 26, 2004. He is survived by his three children, Mary (Ted Chesney), Cathy Shewchuk, and David, his former wife Joan, and his brother Desmond Cunnin. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister Patricia Wappel. Jim was born icon in Regina. At age 16 he began a 37 year career with the Royal Bank, which took him to branches in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and North Western Ontario. He was forced to retire due to failing eyesight in 1977. Then began his career with his guide dogs (Jade, Rayne and James). He and his dogs were a familiar sight in St. James. He did a lot of public speaking on blindness and delighted in taking his dog to schools to do presentations. Jim has been a member of Blessed John XXIII parish since 1969. For many years he served on the board of the Assiniboia Christian Centre. He was also a board member of the CNIB for many years. He will be missed. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Msg. Maurice Comeault of the Assiniboia Christian Centre (Blessed John XXIII Parish) 3390 Portage Ave, corner of Portage Ave and Rouge Road, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday August 30. JEAN PROVAN DAVIDSON (nee STEWART) With deep regret and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Jean Provan Davidson, at the age of 102, peacefully on August 24, 2004. Jean was born icon June 5, 1902 in Paisley, Scotland and came to Canada with her parents in 1904. Jean was predeceased by her parent's Mary and Alex Stewart, her husband's Robert Holms and John Davidson, son Billy Holms, sister Hetty Campbell, and brother's William, Archie & Alex Stewart. Left to mourn are her two son's Stewart (Janet) Holms and Gordon Holms, all of Winnipeg, sister Mabel (Joe) Sibbald of BC, grandchildren, Joanne (Willie) Vielhaber, Tracy (Jeff) Olafson and Glenn Holms, great-grandchildren, Robert & Sean Vielhaber, Matthew & Marlee Olafson. As well as many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family Gaylene, Brent and Cooper Nemeth. Jean took great joy in being a hard worker and a dedicated volunteer. She was a life member of her church, Gordon-King Memorial United, and volunteered her time to many charities, including the Polio Patients of the 1960's. She was a Past Matron of Jephthah Chapter 22 Order of the Eastern Star, a past leader of the 5th Pack of Cubs & Scouts, founder of the Association of Retarded Children of Manitoba and she loved them all, referring to them as her "very special people". Cremation has already taken place. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 30, at 2:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home with Reverend Nancy Sanders officiating, as well, there will be a service from the Order of the Eastern Star. ANTONIO DESLAURIERS

ANTONIO JOSEPH DESLAURIERS Peacefully on July 29, 2004, at Ste. Rose General Hospital at the age of 78 years. Tony was born icon April 23, 1926, at Laurier, MB, to Louis and Emilie (Boudreau). He will be lovingly remembered by siblings, Marie Rose Sanderson, Pierre Deslauriers, Rachelle Lofvendahl, Eveline Danchuk, Reynald Deslauriers; family and friends. Tony lived with his family until his teen years, then worked for the CNR in Winnipeg. He enlisted in the Canadian Navy at the age of 17, serving as Gunner between May 1944 and July 1946. He enjoyed sharing the stories of his adventures in the service. He returned to the CNR as a welder until 1957, then moved to California and worked while upgrading his education. He met many famous people. His family was happy at his homecoming after seven years. Tony worked as office manager at Red River Construction, and managed the Caisse Populaire of Laurier, Ste. Agathe, and Ste. Rose, until his retirement in 1984. He remained active on the Laurier Board of Directors as President until 2001. He served as Treasurer of the Manitoba Metis Federation, supported the Foster Parents Plan, Habitat for Humanity, Royal Canadian Legion, National Firearms Assoc. and Manitoba Big Game Trophy Assoc. He was a member of Notre Dame des Victoires Church and had served as an usher at St. Mary's Cathedral. Tony loved to play tennis and was fond of flying small aircraft. An avid hunter and fisherman, he looked forward to his annual treks with his extended family. Blessed with many friends, he always gave love, understanding and encouragement. Tony's last gift to the world was to donate his body for medical research. If desired, donations in his honour may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, Ste. BERTHA DICKSON (nee GIBSON) 1918 - 2004 Peacefully on Wednesday, August 25, 2004, Mom went to join our dad Bob; her parents, George and Bertha Gibson; brothers, George and Charles; and sister Dora. She is survived by her daughter Linda (Michael) Starosilec and son Jim (Heather) Dickson; grandchildren, Shawn (Susan) and Rob (Glenda) Starosilec of Winnipeg, Regan (Clint) Nerbas Okotoks, AB and Tyler Dickson of Winnipeg. Also missing her are her five great-grandchildren, Darrell, Alyssa, Brett, Megan and Ruby. Also her sister Jaye Hanna in California and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom's nieces and nephews travelled to Winnipeg last September to honour her on her 85th birthday. This was a wonderful testament to the great lady that she was. Mom was such a caring person not only with her family but with her many close friends. She had a generous and loving heart and was always willing to do for others. Mom grew up in West Kildonan moving to Fort Rouge in the 1950s and residing there for over 30 years. She worked for Thompson, Dorfman, Sweatman until retiring in the 1970s to work more closely with our dad. Mom attended First Presbyterian Church for many years making many good friends. The family would like to thank Home Care services, in particular Diana and Avril and Palliative Care nurses, Jo and Norma. Also the wonderful staff at the Riverview Health Care Centre, Dr. Garcia, Linda D., Alina, Wayne, Margaret and many others who were so good to our mom. Antonio Fortin est ne a Price, Comte Matane, Quebec le 12 septembre 1917, fils de Hermenegilde Fortin et de Dorilda Deschenes. Le 14 aout 1937 il prit l'habit chez les Oblats de Marie Immaculee a Ville LaSalle, Quebec et fut ordonne pretre le 19 juin 1943 a Ottawa par son Excellence Monseigneur Lajeunesse, o.m.i. Depuis 1944, le Pere Fortin a fait valoir ses talents de professeur a Gravelbourg, SK et a Saint-Boniface, MB. a partir de 1967, il exerce son ministere dans les missions aupres des autochtones a Bloodvein, Fort Alexandre et Vermillion Bay. En 1977, il devient cure a Redvers SK, en 1981 a Elie, MB et apres, vicaire a Ste Rose du Lac, MB. En 1989 il oeuvra a Sioux Narrows, ON jusqu'a sa retraite en 1996 a la Casa Bonita. Antonio Fortin passed away at the age of 86. Besides his religious family, he leaves to mourn his brothers, Fernand and Romuald as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Antonio Fortin was born icon in Price, Comte Matane, QC, son of Hermenegilde Fortin and Dorilda Deschenes. He entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate at Ville LaSalle, Quebec on August 14, 1937, and was ordained June 19, 1943 in Ottawa by Bishop Lajeunesse, o.m.i. In 1944, Fr. Fortin's first ministry was to teach in Gravelbourg SK then in Saint-Boniface, MB until 1967. The following years brought him to the missions of Bloodvein, Fort Alexander and Vermillion Bay. In 1997, he became pastor in the parishes of Redvers SK, Elie, MB, then vicar in Ste. Rose du Lac MB. From 1989 until his retirement in 1996, he served as co-pastor and administrator in Sioux Narrows, ON. The Oblates and the Fortin family wish to express their appreciation to the nursing staff at the Casa Bonita for their care and devotion to Fr. Fortin during his illness. A prayer vigil will be held at Salle Aubert, 474 Aulneau St., Saint-Boniface, on Sunday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass for Fr. ANNIE FUTTY Annie Futty passed away August 26, 2004 with her beloved husband Tom and her beautiful family by her side. Born July 1st, 1925 in Winnipeg to Kenneth and Janet Murray, Annie was a lifetime resident of Winnipeg outside of a short time living in Shelbourne, NS after her marriage in June of 1944. Annie is survived by her husband Tom; her two daughters, Karen Gundrum and Don, Jane Murray and Arnie Anzew; daughter-in-law Linda; five grandchildren, David, Dianna and Derek Gundrum, Carina Kirk and Wendy Rondeau; five great-grandchildren, Dallas, Tyler, Tanner, Brendan and Kaelyn and her two brothers, Gary and Jim. Predeceased by her beloved son Tom; parents; brothers, Donald and Kenneth and sister Christine. Annie was a devoted wife and mother and a wonderful friend to many people. We all were enriched by her zest for life and sense of humour. She was the life of every party, a force to be reckoned with and will be sadly missed by us all. Memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. (Aubrey street entrance) on Monday, August 30 at 1:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place with private family interment.
