DONALD ELKE

DONALD EDWIN ELKE Peacefully on August 27, 2004, Don passed away at Selkirk General Hospital. Don and his twin brother were born icon to Bill and Frieda Elke on January 17, 1941 in Amaranth where he was raised. He was predeceased by his father in 1967. Don will be lovingly remembered by his mother Freida; his best friend and wife of 40 years, June; daughter Shannon (Mike); son Trent (Anita); six grandchildren, Stefanie, A.J., Cheyanne, Ashlee, Emilee and T.J. (We love you Papa). Also left to mourn, sisters, Ilene, Dorothy (Wayne); brothers, Ron (Terry), David (Sandy) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Don worked most of his life as a golf course supt. and ice maker. He enjoyed both even if it was hard work. The last year and a half of Don's life he battled a rare heart disease. Thank you to all the staff at Selkirk General Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be in Donald's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. INGIBJORG HOLM

INGIBJORG (INGA) HOLM Peacefully on August 28, 2004 Inga Holm passed away surrounded by her family. Inga was born icon December 7, 1909 to Magnus and Ingibjorg Magnusson of Hnausa. She grew up with seven brothers and three sisters. Two died in infancy. With the help of the children, Magnus created a thriving fishing enterprise. It was while working as a bookkeeper for her father's business that Inga met a very special member of Magnus' working crew, Bjorgvin Holm of Framnes. They were married in 1940 and moved to the family farm. Here Inga learned a very different business - mixed farming. Love, farm work and creativity helped overcome homesickness for the hustle and bustle of life with her brothers and sisters. Arborg became home in the mid 1950's. Inga lost her beloved husband Bjorgvin in 1965 in an accident. Family was the main focus of Inga's life. She was a very enterprising, artistic and personable woman whose wit and sense of humour were enjoyed by all. She was an active participant in Lions Place, and she continued to dance weekly until she was 92. She was predeceased by brothers, Jon, Sveinn, Oscar, Magnus, Mundi, Joe, Einar; sisters, Helga and Asta. Inga is survived by sister Jorunn (Bob); son Bud (Jane); daughter Carol (Bill); granddaughters, Carla (Dave), Tanya (Sean), Andrea; and great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Thomas, Maxwell and Thor. GORDON IVERSON

GORDON WALTER IVERSON On August 27, 2004 at his home at Poseidon Centre, surrounded by family, Gordon passed away peacefully at the age of 85. He will be sadly missed by his best friend and loving wife of 61 years, Ida; his children, Maureen, Donald (Lynne), Judith (Ronald), Barbara (Michael) and Karen; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gord will be remembered for his love of family, his sense of humour, his great smile, his many words of wisdom and his ability to overcome any challenge life presented. The family will forever cherish the memories of the time spent together at the cottage in Gimli. One of Gord and Ida's greatest pleasures in later life was spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A special thanks to the wonderful staff at Poseidon Centre for their kind and compassionate care to Gord and Ida. Following a private celebration of his life, his ashes will be returned to his favourite spot, Gimli, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Post Polio Network Inc., at 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5 or a charity of your choice.

NICHOLAS JAKIMECZKO

NICHOLAS (NICK) JAKIMECZKO On Friday, August 27, 2004 Nick at the age of 80 years, passed away with his beloved wife Helen by his side, at the St. Boniface General Hospital. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 42 years Helen; daughters, Angela (Rob) Adamson and Mary-Ann; and grandchildren, Sarah, Brendan and Jesse. Nick was born icon in Perekosy, Ukraine (former Poland) on August 12, 1924. Nick was predeceased by his brother John of Ontario and his brother William; sisters, Hyanka (Anna) Paraska and Maria of the Ukraine. He is survived by his youngest brother Vintin (Anthony) in Ukraine, along with his nieces and nephews. After the war ended he immigrated to England, then to Canada in 1951. Nick was predeceased by his childhood friend Bill Senkowsky who travelled the same life journey with him to Winnipeg. Nick was employed as a machinist helper for the Canadian Pacific Railway's Weston Shops until his retirement in 1989. Nick was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church for 50 years. He obtained strength from his faith. Throughout his life he spent time in daily prayer, reflecting his love of the Lord. Nick was a caring person who put his family before himself. Nick enjoyed gardening, visiting with friends and family. Most of all, he valued moments spent with his daughters and his loving grandchildren. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Knysh Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 1 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery. CONDREN KEATINGE

CONDREN REX KEATINGE August 7, 1947 - August 27, 2004 Con passed away suddenly at his residence in Grand Marais, MB. He was predeceased by his father Rex in February 2002. He is survived by his mother Myra; Valerie; Aunt Eileen and Uncle Jim Miller; cousins, Kevin (Karen) with son Craig, and Glenn. Con was born icon and raised in St. James and began his career with the North Kildonan Police Department in December 1966. It was during those years that the N.K. Police Chief proclaimed that Rex was a more appropriate name for a police office, so Con became known to the members of the Department as Rex. Following amalgamation of the Police Departments, Rex served in the Robbery and Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs, and the Traffic Division of the Winnipeg Police Service. He was also involved in several high profile joint operations with the RCMP. He was the recipient of the Police Exemplary Service Medal in 1988 and retired in 1994 at the rank of Staff Sargent. Rex was held in high regard by many members of the Judiciary and Legal System - a relationship he cherished. Following his retirement, Rex worked for the TD Bank Security Office. In 1997, he moved to Grand Marais to be near the beach he enjoyed so much as a child. Shortly after his move, he began working for the Department of Justice, Province of Manitoba. At the time of his passing, Rex was also co-owner of the Grand Sands Motor Inn. Rex had many true and loyal friends whose companionship he loved. Many thanks to all of you for your support during this most difficult time. Rest in Peace Con Flowers are gratefully declined. ALICE LAFRANCE (nee KLYNE) Mrs. Alice Lafrance, aged 86 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the Sunnywood Manor, Pine Falls, MB. Alice was born icon in Woodridge, MB on January 21, 1918. Alice is survived by her two sons and their wives, David (Diane) of Calgary, AB, and Paul (Lisa) of Cowichan Bay, BC; four grandchildren, Martyn, Jillian, Camille and Mason; her stepsister Lorraine Moore of Kenora, ON; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1993, stepbrother Martin Klyne in 1975 and stepbrother Leonard Klyne in 2001. Alice resided in Pine Falls most of her life. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Golden Leisure Club and the Silver Haven Club. Alice will be remembered by all who knew her as she touched many people's lives. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. at the Notre Dame du Laus Roman Catholic Church, Powerview, MB with Rev. Fr. Jim Gray, the celebrant. ANTOINETTE LAURIER (nee DAUPHINAIS) September 23, 1915- August 28, 2004 With deep sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister at the St. Boniface Hospital on August 28, 2004. Toni was predeceased by her parents, Mederic and Lucie; her husband Adelard "Bedo"; her siblings, Pete, Alice, Therese and Marie-Rose. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Mederic "Mitch" and wife Yvette; grandchildren, Rick (Clara), Debbie (Brad), Ronn (Lynn) and Brian; her great-grandchildren, Justin, Joel, Kyle, Kyla and Dylan; her sisters, Marie Louise Smith, Florence Sul, Rita (George) Davidson; her brother Larry Ritchot; many nieces and nephews. Toni's greatest love was her family. She was a quiet person who was always there for anyone who needed her. She will be deeply missed. MARILYN AUDREY LESLIE (nee GELEAN) April 15, 1940 - August 27, 2004 Peacefully, on Friday, August 27, surrounded by family, Marilyn walked through Heavens Gate to be eternally home with her Lord and Saviour. Marilyn leaves to mourn her passing, her son Les Cherwinski (Sherry); grandchildren, Tyler, Troy and Trevor; and daughter Debbie Scobbie; grandchildren, Vanessa, Natara, and Cole; brothers, Ray Gelean (Marilyn), Larry Gelean; sister Lorraine Fedoriw (Dave); sister-in-law Connie Gelean; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Melvin and Margaret Gelean and nephew Jason Gelean. Marilyn was born icon in Rose Valley, SK living in Archerwill, SK until she was 13 and then her family moved to Winnipeg, MB. She was very strong willed, hard working and independent with a unique personality which touched many lives. Before retirement Marilyn spent nearly 15 years with the Middle Church Nursing Home where she took great pride in caring for the elderly. She enjoyed many treasured, lasting friendships with her co-workers. Marilyn was an amazing Grandma (Nanny) with tremendous love and devotion for her grandchildren and family. She was always there to attend to their needs and share in their triumphs, being extremely proud of each and every one of them. Marilyn's passing leaves a deep ache in the hearts of all who loved her and she will live forever in their memories. The family thanks the third floor staff at Concordia Hospital and especially the Selkirk Home Care ladies that took loving care of her. FRANCESCO MASI

FRANCESCO (FRANK) MASI With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Francesco (Frank) Masi on Friday, August 27, 2004 at the St. Boniface General Hospital at the age of 71. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Caterina; son Joe Masi (Sandra Simmons); daughters, Mirella (John) St. Jean and Gina (Todd) Rooker and grandsons, Marc and Ryan St. Jean and Nicholas Rooker. Frank is also greatly missed by brother-in-law Ralph (Fiorina) Aiello; father-in-law Giuseppe Aiello and many nephews, nieces, family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Giuseppe and Maria Masi; mother-in-law Gaetania Aiello and sister Rosalia and brother-in-law Cesare Sheba. Frank was born icon April 6, 1933 in Amato, Italy. In 1961, he immigrated to Canada with his wife Caterina and three year old son Joe. Over the years, Frank worked as a maintenance mechanic for Perth's Dry Cleaning, Aqua Mechanics, and Canada West Shoes. With the gift of a technical mind, he always had a fix-it plan and the right tool for the job. The family cabin at Beaconia was a perfect example of his imagination and skills and he and Caterina and their family spent many enjoyable summers there. Frank is remembered for his entertaining stories, no-nonsense manner and the way his face lit up when he talked about his grandsons. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the St. Boniface Hospital for their care, kindness and understanding. Prayers will be said on Monday, August 30 in Holy Rosary Parish, 510 River Ave. at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 31 in Holy Rosary Parish at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano presiding. Entombment in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Assumption Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Aiello, Tony Aiello, Tony Gallo, Greg Grande, Pat Puccio and Tony Scarpino. REGINALD JAMES MURDOCK October 7, 1925 - August 27, 2004 Peacefully on August 27, 2004, Reginald James Murdock went to rest. Reg was predeceased by his father James Murdock; his mother Annie; his stepmother Racheal Murdock and his brother William Murdock. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty; his children, Teresa Mallette, Neil (Linda) Murdock, Keith, Darren (Sharon), Deanna (Rod) Traverse and Sheila Murdock; his grandchildren, Roland, Sheri and Rusty, Vanessa, Mitch and Ashley, Allison, Erica, Taylor, Marisa, Ian, Kalyn, Dakotah, Jordan and Elayna; his great-grandchildren, Dante, Mytayah, Angel, Trinity, Alexander and Stewart; sister Margaret Cochrane; brother Gordon Murdock; and many nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and special friends. Reg was a commercial fisherman for many years and a school bus driver for 25 years, until his retirement. Many people know him as "Dootch". He was the kindest, warmest loving husband and father a family could have. He loved hockey, baseball and bingo, but most of all he loved being with his grandchildren and children, having family gatherings and being around people he loved. He will be lovingly remembered for the way he always let you know that he cared and for his sense of humour. ARVON JOSEPH (SHORTY) NIELSEN Arvon Joseph (Shorty) Nielsen was taken by cancer August 26, 2004. He was born icon January 4, 1932 in Lethbridge, AB and married Eileen Bachalo of Portage La Prairie in 1956. They have three daughters, Brenda (Christensen), Linda (Beaumont), Liana (Rudolph) and eight grandchildren. Arvon served with the R.C.M.P. for 29 years, stationed around Manitoba, and then was Chief Sheriff for the province until his retirement in 1996. HELEN PHILLIP

HELEN PHILLIP In the early hours of August 28, 2004, our beloved mother, Helen Phillip, passed away at the Concordia General Hospital, at the age of 90 years. Helen will be sadly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Mona Phillip of Winnipeg; daughter Barbara Gail Leblanc and grandson John Leblanc of Edmonton, AB. She was predeceased by her parents, Nikola and Barbara Noga; stepfather Hnat Yuristy; husband Walter; son-in-law Victor; brothers, John, Peter and Bill; and sisters, Annie, Nellie, Elsie and Rose. Helen was born icon in Ethelbert on February 8, 1914. She began her working life in Dauphin as a housekeeper. With the encouragement of her brother Bill, Helen moved to Winnipeg and took up hairdressing. After graduating, she worked with Bill in his shop in Elmwood until his departure to California and then with her younger sister Rose. Helen went on to operate her own salon from the family home until her retirement in 1979. It was in Winnipeg that Helen met and married her beloved husband Walter. They were married in 1940 and moved to Victoria, BC upon his enlistment in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943. After the war, they settled in Winnipeg eventually moving to Transcona in 1956 where they enjoyed many happy years together. Helen loved her home and was very proud of her yard and garden. She spent many hours in her kitchen making pickles, jams and jellies. Helen also was very accomplished at sewing, needlework and crafts. Her love for animals was unbounded and all of the family pets enjoyed her kind and tender care. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff and tenants at Fred Douglas Heritage House for their care and support over the last three years and to all of the staff at the Concordia Hospital for their gentle care over the last few months. Your many kind deeds, words and gestures were so very appreciated and will not be forgotten. Funeral services will be held at Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day Street at 11:00 a.m. on September 1. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, memorial donations made be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, the Fred Douglas Society or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
