STEVE FERENS

STEVE FERENS It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and dido. On Monday, September 6, 2004, after a short battle with cancer, Steve Ferens passed away at the Seven Oaks Hospital, at the age of 80. Steve will be deeply missed by his wife Irene of 47 years; and his sons, Bohdan, Ken, Brian (Halyna) and Michael. He will also be greatly missed by his grandsons, Derek, Trevin, Christopher, Nicholas and Adrian; and many other relatives and friends. Steve was predeceased by his father (1937), mother (1954), two brothers and three sisters. Steve was born icon January 29, 1924, in the Sambir region of western Ukraine. In 1942, at the age of 17, Steve worked on a farm in Germany as a labourer for 11 years. It was during this time that Steve first began mastering his skills at cabinet making and general carpentry. In 1953, with the generous aid of his good friends Fiona Banas and Bill Sherburn, Steve immigrated to Winnipeg. A few years later, he met and married his wife Irene in 1957. Shortly after, he was blessed with his first son Bohdan, followed by Ken, Brian and Michael. Steve was employed at Dowse woodworking, where he continued his career as a cabinet maker, up until his retirement. He was also a member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and Institute Prosvita. Steve will always be remembered as a quiet, gentle unassuming man. He was a very dedicated family man and a very hard worker. He always placed his family first, always making time for his four sons, and was dedicated to all his grandsons. He excelled at cabinet making and over the years he built with much pride and love for his family and friends, all in his tiny one-car garage: many kitchen cabinets, living room furniture sets and bedroom suites. We'll all miss you, Dad, but we know you'll be watching us from heaven with your faint whistling. Special thanks to all our friends and family who came to visit our father, and who supported us through this terrible time. Prayers (panachyda) will be sung at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 9 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 10 at Sts. NIELS JORGENSEN

NIELS BECK JORGENSEN Born in Hedensted, Denmark on December 31, 1906, Beck passed away on September 2, 2004 at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC. He leaves behind Elsie, his wife of 66 years; a sister Inger Bak; his children, Miriam (Joe), June, Norman (Janette), and Patricia; as well as his grandchildren, Alana, Anthony, Tiffany, Erik, Hilary and Andrew, all of whom were his pride and joy. Beck was a self-made man, having only four years of formal education, but a lifetime of reading and learning. He left Denmark at the age of 19 to emigrate to Canada to start a new life. From having no money and speaking no English, he worked hard to eventually own his own company, Alpha Manufacturing, in Winnipeg. He and Elsie raised their family in Winnipeg and then moved to Surrey, BC to escape the cold and the mosquitoes. He ultimately settled in White Rock, with frequent side trips to Reno for "Keno" therapy. He was fiercely independent, playing the stock market and smoking his cigars until the end. A memorial service will be held at Victory Memorial Park, 14831 28th Ave., Surrey, on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 11:00 a.m., with interment and reception to follow.

MARION KATZ

MARION KATZ At the Grace Hospital on August 31, 2004, Marion Katz, aged 92, passed away after eighteen months of deteriorating health. She was predeceased by her husband of 23 years, Syd Katz; and eight brothers plus her parents, Robert and Sara Steiman. Mrs. Katz was born icon in Winnipeg, February 11, 1912 and grew up along Selkirk Avenue when this area was one of the most ethnically diverse ones in the country. She attended William Whyte School and St. John's High School for her formal education, then went to work during the early days of the Great Depression at first in Winnipeg and later in her brother's restaurant in Port Arthur, ON. She was married in 1937 to Syd Katz and enjoyed a happy marriage until his premature death in 1960. During most of her life, Marion was constantly involved in a great variety of volunteer activities in the community and for the Rosh Pina Synagogue, where she began as a Brownie leader in the 1950s and eventually became president of the Sisterhood organization for two consecutive years in the mid-60s. A few years later she became president of the Aliyah Chapter of Hadassah. She was also active with the Red Cross, the Cancer Society, the CNIB, and served as secretary of the St. John's High School Parents Committee. Besides being an avid mah-jong player for many years, Marion took up bridge and became quite proficient at this game as well. In addition, she learned sculpting and watercolour painting. Her travels took her to Mexico, Great Britain, Italy, and the Middle East. She was consistently involved not only with her extended family, whom she regularly visited in California, Calgary and Vancouver, but also with old friends who she felt were socially isolated and needed frequent invitations to her home on holidays and special occasions to bring them closer to the mainstream. Early in 2003, she began to be increasingly plagued by unstable angina, macular degeneration, and Paget's disease so that these, plus the effects of a fractured hip, finally claimed her. Marion Katz is survived by her son Edward; and 16 nieces and nephews. She got along with everyone: friends, family, coworkers, neighbours, acquaintances and strangers. She was kind, compassionate, generous, loving and caring, and that's probably why she lived to the age of 92.
