CLARA RUMMERY

CLARA RUMMERY (nee BJORNSON) With deep sadness the Rummery family shares news of the death of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Clara at the Seven Oaks Hospital on Thursday, September 16, 2004 at the age of 91 years. Born in Winnipeg on October 21, 1912, she grew up on Beverley Street across from Wellington School, which was her playground. As well as Wellington, she attended Principal Sparling and Daniel McIntyre schools. Clara participated in sports, enjoying basketball and track in particular. After graduating from Success Business College, she entered the work force. Mother and Gerry Rummery grew up living a few houses away from each other and they were married in 1936. Together, they raised their family on Dominion Street. Her three boys and many neighbourhood lads enjoyed the comfort of her care and attention during her years as a homemaker and stay-at-home mother. Some of those lads continued to be her "special sons" throughout her life. Mother was fiercely independent, maintaining her own home and driving her car until her recent hospitalization. Following Dad's death in 1971, Mom retrained at Success and worked at the Department of Natural Resources until her retirement. After retiring, Clara assumed an active role in the family resort business spending her summers at Rushing River. She became the Camp Waterfall "greeter" and will be missed by the guests to whom she was "Gramma". Mother understood the importance of maintaining friendships. She wrote copious letters and regularly phoned her acquaintances, some of whom date back to her youth. She remembered everyone's special occasions with greeting cards. Clara was proud of her Icelandic heritage and was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church. Mother professed her faith daily in her unselfish service to others, quietly going about her duty as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbour. Her gentle, caring nature made a difference to many a day and many a life. Throughout her life, but particularly since Dad's death, she dedicated herself to her church almost as much as to her family. She was president of the First Lutheran Church Women's Group from 1988 to 1989. She was an active member of the Social Ministry committee and looked after the Caregivers. Whatever time and effort was given by her was returned many times over by friendships and blessings which the church provided to her. We are extremely grateful for the gift of her life. Clara was predeceased by her husband Gerry; parents, Gislina and Sigurdur Bjornson; son Richard; sister Edna; brothers, Bjorn and Ingimar; sister-in-law and "soulmate" Dulcie Bjornson. Left to cherish her memory are sons, Gary (Lillian) and Rob (Nancy). Mother was blessed with grandchildren who loved, cared for and enjoyed her, Gerry (Pam), Jim (Cathie), Garth (Ming), Roxanne, Leslie (Larry) Penn and Dan (Tara). Her legacy will live on through her great-grandchildren, Sydney and Taylor Penn, Rebecca and Amanda Rummery, Zoe and Kaya Rummery. Also survived by sister-in-law Leta Deyoe and special niece Barbara Mineault (Ed) and family. The service to celebrate Clara's life will be held at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St. on Monday, September 20 at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Michael Kurtz officiating. Interment Brookside Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made to First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 1R2 or to CancerCare Manitoba, ON109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg MB R3E 0V9. JOSEPH RZESZUTEK

JOSEPH RZESZUTEK On September 15, 2004 after a brief illness, Joseph Rzeszutek passed away peacefully surrounded by his children, at the Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 81. He leaves to mourn his three children: daughter Helen Rzeszutek (Brent Wallberg) of Winnipeg, her sons, Michael and Matthew Cunningham; daughter Sophie Hendry (Wes) of Calgary and sons, Sean Gellatly, Christopher Hendry and daughter Angela Hendry; and son Ed Rzeszutek (Linda) of Winnipeg and their children, Paul Rezutek (Lisa), Andrew, Jennifer and Katherine Rzeszutek. Joseph is survived by his brother Walter Rzeszutek (Stephanie) of Winnipeg and their seven children and families; and two sisters, Josephine and Helen in Poland. He was predeceased by his wife Stella in 1990 and a brother Stanley one month ago, also from Poland. Born in Poland on February 24, 1923, Joseph spent the war years in Germany where he met and married Stella. He immigrated to Canada in 1948 and worked on a farm near Tufnell, SK until he saved enough money to bring his wife and son to Canada in 1950. The family moved briefly to Winnipeg and then spent seven years on a farm in Julius, MB. In 1959 they returned to Winnipeg where Joseph worked for the University of Manitoba in the Department of Oral Biology as an animal attendant until his retirement in 1988. Family, faith and home were the cornerstones of Grandpa Joe's life. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his enormous generosity and help. Dad could fix almost anything and enjoyed keeping his home in good condition. He loved growing wonderful apple trees, vegetables and gardening, in general. He taught us by example, to appreciate nature's constant renewal of life. We thank God for giving us such a wonderful Dad. His last days were a profoundly moving experience and a final gift to us. Our family is grateful to Father Antoni, Father McCloskey and Father Dado for their spiritual help during Grandpa's illness. A very special thanks to Dad's family doctor, Dr. Szajkowski, and a special thanks to Dr. Patel and Dr. Zaki for treating our Dad and helping us to understand what he was battling. We are thankful for the new friends we have made at the Seven Oaks Hospital. Thank-you Olive, for your inspiration, your kindness and your love. We won't forget you. Words can't express the wonderful care, compassion and support our Dad and family received from the staff on the fifth floor in U1 and U2. We now know that angels do exist. Thank-you, Uncle Walter and loving cousins. Wally, you are a pillar of strength. Prayers will be said on Friday, September 17 at 9:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Ave. with interment to follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation, the United Way or the Arthritis Society.
