MARY ANN MARTIN (nee MacDONALD) With great sadness, the family of Mary Ann Martin announces her passing at the Victoria General Hospital on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at the age of 80 years. She leaves to mourn her husband Willmer (Bill); her son James (Shahda) and her daughter Barbara (Fred); her grandchildren
, Michael, Sarah and Parisa; and her brother Alistair (Doreen). Mary Ann was born
in St. Vital where she attended elementary school and Glenlawn Collegiate. Mary led a happy and active life as a wife and mother. She worked for many years in retail sales and as a volunteer teaching swimming to disabled children. Among her avid interests were bowling (Dakota Bowling League), cooking, and golf. Mom was devoted to her family especially her grandchildren and continued to be supportive of every aspect of their lives. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank all the staff on the fifth floor of the Victoria General Hospital for their caring and compassion. In her memory donations may be made to the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. WILLIAM DOUGLAS "DOUG" McDONALD It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved brother, Doug on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, in Winnipeg. Remaining to cherish his memory are his brothers, Chuck (Marilyn) of California and Jack (Shirley) of Winnipeg; nephews, Brad (Lisa) of Toronto, Bruce (Melissa) of Montreal and John (Kristen) of Winnipeg; nieces, Nancy (Dave) of Colorado and Lisa (Kurt) of Winnipeg; stepniece Michelle (Mark) of Winnipeg, stepnephews, Dan of Nelson, BC and Dave of Winnipeg; and nine great-grandnieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his father and mother, Bruce and Betty McDonald; and sister-in-law Joan. He had been a wonderful caregiver for his mother and father in their last years. Doug had resided all of his life in St. James. He graduated from Silver Heights Collegiate and went on to have a 20 year career in distribution mostly with Merck Frosst Laboratories. Doug was a voracious reader and writer who loved music, especially jazz, and had a keen interest in football and horse racing. He loved animals, children, and had a great sense of humour. Doug was a very caring person and will be missed by all his friends and relatives. A private funeral service was held in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's All Beliefs and Faiths Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Ave. at Sharp Boulevard on Saturday, October 9. Interment will take place in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 4000 Portage Ave. at a later date. Our family would like to thank all the caregivers that helped Doug with his parents in their final years and a special thanks to Fr. Owen Steeves for his inspiring service. HUGH McGRATH July 20, 1926 - October 12, 2004 Peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Hugh passed away at the St. Boniface General Hospital, at the age of 78 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Ethel, of 56 years of marriage; and their seven devoted children, Pat (Linda), Geri (Anne), Mary (Harvey), Paul (Wenda), Kevin (Carol), Theresa (Rob) and Catherine (Barrie). Hugh was the proud and loving grandfather of his grandchildren, Jori, Warren, Kelly, Leanne, Peter, Michael, Suzanne, Sean, Paul Jr., Jason, Vicki, David, Lindsay, Adam, Jessica, Gregory, Hugh, Emily, Anthony and Alexandra, and his great-grandchildren, Isabella, Britanny, Cara-Lynn, Ashton, Toni and Jessica. He also leaves to mourn his sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Dick Browning; brothers-in-law, Bud (Lola) and Gerry (Jackie); sister-in-law Geraldine Naffziger; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Hugh will be greatly missed by his good friends, Jim and Judy McIntyre. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Muriel McGrath; and brother Gregory. Hugh was born
in Belleville, ON and grew up in Toronto where he attended Holy Name School and De La Salle College. He valued the opportunity to serve with the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944-45. After the war he worked in sales and production planning for Atlas Steels Ltd. in Toronto, Welland and Montreal. In 1964, he moved his family to Toronto where he was employed by Axel Johnson Ltd. as Sales Manager. Subsequently, he transferred to Winnipeg as Area Manager for a subsidiary company, Western Alloys and Metals. After 33 years in stainless steel and specialty metals, he and two partners bought the commercial fishing division at John Leckie Ltd. As President and General Manager, Hugh guided this company (Lakefish Net and Twine) for seven years until his retirement in 1986. Volunteerism was important to Hugh. He served as board member and/or chairperson of the boards of Villa Maria Retreat House, Carleton Club, L'Arche, Deer Lodge Centre and St. Joseph's Residence. Hugh felt privileged to serve with so many dedicated people in each of these organizations. The Catholic Church provided a foundation for Hugh throughout his life. Over the years in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg, he participated in many programs particularly those concerning marriage and family life. Hugh always expressed admiration and respect for the people with whom he worked. For the past 36 years, he was a devoted member of St. Paul The Apostle Church where he served as Minister of the Eucharist and participated in other parish activities. Hugh was a person who touched many lives. He used many forms of communication to maintain his connections with family and friends. His poetry marked special occasions for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Conversation was his preferred activity and Hugh always appreciated it when others laughed at his jokes. He particularly loved taking everyone to Dairy Queen. Any excuse would do. Hugh looked forward to spending time with Jim and Judy at Keewatin and cruising on their boat. Prayers will be held on Sunday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 18 at 10:30 a.m., also in the church, with Rev. CLARA McLEAN On October 7, 2004 Clara McLean passed away peacefully at her residence, Calvary Place Personal Care Home, at the age of 80 years. Clara was predeceased by her husband, Harris and her brother George Harness. She will be sadly missed by her relatives in England and her friends here of many years. Clara was born
and raised in Winnipeg, joining the family business, C.H. Harness and Son, with her brother and father after high school. An avid gardener, dog owner and fishing enthusiast, she divided her time for many years between the city and the family trailer at Pye's Landing in Ontario after her and George sold the business to retire in 1968. Clara's family and friends wish to thank the staff at Calvary Place Personal Care Home, Grace General Hospital and the Misericordia Hospital for their wonderful care and many kindnesses during her stays with them. MARGARET MacINTOSH McMAHON (nee McKENZIE) October 26, 1919 to October 11, 2004 It is with great sadness and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, Margaret McMahon on October 11, 2004 at the Goodwin Lodge, Teulon, MB. Margaret is survived by her daughter Vivian (Dannie); sons, James and Neil; sister Nancey Helander; grandchildren, Jason (Sarah), Justin, Ian (Jade), Amanda and Clarissa; great-grandchildren, Austen, Jayden, Easton and Tanner; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and James McKenzie; husband Basil; sister Marie; brother James. Mom was born
and raised in Iverness, Scotland and was a corporal in the British Air Force. She met and married her husband Basil in Scotland. After a few years they immigrated to Canada and lived in the Teulon district where she worked in the Teulon Hospital for 25 years. During her 25 years at the hospital she had met many people, which helped make her job very satisfying. Mom enjoyed her winter vacations in Phoenix visiting her nephew Brian Helander with her sister Nancey. She always came back with lots of bargains. Mom and Nancey also made several trips to Scotland. Mom always looked forward to opening her home for Sunday family dinners. Gram always paid very special attention to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom will be remembered as a loving, wonderful, hardworking, ambitious mother and caring grandmother and great-grandmother. The family would like to thank the staff at the Goodwin Lodge and Drs. McTaggart and Graham for their wonderful care and dedicated support. A celebration of Margaret's life will be held on Monday, October 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Teulon. Rev. CHARLES "CHUCK" McNEIL With sadness, the family of Charles "Chuck" McNeil announces his peaceful passing, at the Grace General Hospital on Saturday, October 9, 2004, at the age of 70 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife Carol, of 47 years of marriage; daughter Debbie Rind (Rick); sons, David (Carolyn) and Andy (Sheila); grandchildren, Jackie and Brad Rind; Caitlin, Lauren and Ryan McNeil; Calvin, Dustin and Cole McNeil; mother-in-law Dora Hemming; sister-in-law Jean McIntosh; brother-in-law Wally Hemming (Diane); special friends, Norman and Rowena Butler; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Chuck was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Lorayne (nee Denison) McNeil; infant daughter Patrice; and his brothers, Cowan and Lewis. Chuck was born
in Winnipeg on February 18, 1934. He attended Greenway, General Wolf and Tec Voc High Schools. His career spanned 34 years with McLeods and Beaver Lumber. Chuck belonged to the Masonic Lodge, the Wildlife Association, coached little league baseball and hockey. While growing up, Chuck was a member of the Salvation Army, where he played the French horn in the band and was also a leader of Wolf Cubs and Scouts. He was an avid curler for many years and enjoyed golf, the Blue Bombers and camping with his family. Chuck lived courageously with diabetes. for 42 years. On Thursday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m., Chuck's funeral service was held in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Dr. with Captain Faye Shail officiating. ALICE NORAH MITCHELL (nee BROUSSEAU) 1917 - 2004 Peacefully on Thursday, October 14, 2004, Alice Mitchell passed away. She was predeceased by her husband Jack, her mother Anna, father Eli, and two brothers Norman and Fred. Alice was born
in Somerset, Manitoba and spent her early years in Melville, Saskatchewan. She was the oldest of three girls in a family of five children born
to Anna (nee Bergeron) and Eli Brousseau. The family moved to Winnipeg when Alice was a young teenager and where she completed her high school education at Notre Dame de Lourdes Convent School. In 1939, she met and married John ( Jack) Mitchell, a City of Winnipeg fireman. In 1941 her only son John Junior was born, and in 1943 John Sr. left his firefighting duties in Winnipeg and joined the RCNVR for the duration of the Second World War. Upon his return, and to his peacetime occupation, the family set up a home, but after a couple of years decided to move to Montreal, Quebec. After a couple of years in Montreal, they returned to Winnipeg and entered into a business with Alice's younger brother Norman. There followed a further joint venture into the nursing home business. After they retired, Alice and Jack travelled and bought a retirement home in Mesa, Arizona with Alice's brother Fred and his wife Blanche, where they "flocked" with the other snowbirds every winter. They also decided on condominium living, buying two. They enjoyed very much the convivial condominium lifestyle with their many friends and acquaintances. Alice will be sadly missed by her son Jay (Carole), her sisters, Elizabeth Teskey and Blanche Hilbig, and by her many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Burke and the staff at The Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home, especially the nursing staff and other caregivers of nursing station 1 for their kindness and care. A memorial service was held in Chilliwack, officiated by Pastor Hiebert, assisted by brother Bud. Curtis was born
in Loon Straits, MB and moved to Grand Rapids, MB at the age of 3, where he spent the next 15 years. He spent time in Yellowknife, moving to Chilliwack in the early 1980s. Over the years he was involved in all kinds of sports, both playing and coaching. He started hunting and fishing at an early age. This was his greatest joy, and many of his friends commented about it at the memorial service. Fly fishing was also something he loved. He took pride in creating and tying his own flies. He had a very inventive and creative mind and many things he did at his place of employment were testament to this. Our son, you are now at rest and we shall all "Gather at the River" one day. We love you.
MITCHELL MURRAY
MITCHELL ANTHONY MURRAY 1961 - 2004 Suddenly at his residence in London, ON, on October 6, 2004 at the age of 42. He was the beloved son of John and Morna Murray of Ancaster, ON and brother of Pamela O'Leary of Winnipeg, MB. Mitch was a very loving son and brother and he will be dearly missed. Mitchell was born
in Winnipeg and attended John Pritchard school in North Kildonan. After moving to Oakville, ON Mitch attended Gordon Purdue Collegiate and then graduated from Sheridan College. He was employed with various transportation companies including Canadian Pacific Intermodal Services where he became disabled as a result of a work related injury in 1984. Mitch has lived in Toronto, Hamilton, Owen Sound and London, ON since his accident. His life was difficult and often lonely after his injury, but he was always a loving and compassionate man who cared a great deal for all his family. He is also survived by his grandmother Clara Frantz of Selkirk, MB; his aunt Mary Ellen Wilks (Ken) of Winnipeg Beach, MB; his uncles, Verne Frantz (Maria) of Sardis, BC, William Murray (Denyse) of Birds Hill, MB and many cousins. MARIA NICKEL
MARIA NICKEL Peacefully, on Thursday, October 14, 2004 our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Maria Nickel, passed away at the age of 94 years. Maria was born
June 19, 1910 in Osterwich, Ukraine to Johann and Margareta Dyck. She married Heinrich Nickel in 1931 and gave birth to two sons, Abram and Heinrich in Franzfeld, Ukraine. Maria's husband passed away in 1938, after which Maria moved her family to Germany. She was separated from her eldest son Abram in 1945. She and her son Heinrich moved to Paraguay in 1948, immigrated to Canada in 1955, and eventually settled in Winnipeg. They were joyfully reunited with Abram and his family in 1972. Maria worked for nineteen years in the garment industry until a severe case of meningitis caused her retirement in 1964. Maria went on to become a resident of Kingsfordhaus where she made many friends and always remained a strong member of the Mennonite community and church. She will lovingly be remembered by her two sons, Abram (Helen) and Henry, her niece Tina (Peter) Dyck whom she helped raise from a young age, as well as her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Maria had a very special bond with her three grandchildren from Winnipeg - Kristin, Robert and Kathryn (children of Henry and Evelyn Nickel), who she sometimes referred to as her "kids". That special bond will live on in their hearts forever. Oma, we love you and we miss you. Always. CHARLY J. NOVOTNY "CHIEF" On Friday, October 15, 2004 at Health Sciences Centre, Charly, aged 77 years, beloved husband of Emilie Novotny. Charly will be missed more that words can say by his three children, Jude (Rick), Charlie Jr. (Tannis), Monica (Derrick); and four grandchildren, Nolan, Owen, Charlotte and Bianca; as well as nephews and nieces. Charly was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Mary; brother Hank; and brother and best friend Ben. Born in Frank, AB, on July 21, 1927, Charly moved with his family to Winnipeg where they lived and farmed until 2002. Charly and Emilie enjoyed snowbirding in Arizona with Ben and Marj, meeting many new friends along their way. Dad insisted on a last road trip in October 2003 which took them to Halifax, NS where they enjoyed three months with Monica, Derrick and the girls. They returned home via the US and enjoyed a short stay in Florida. Their last trip was to Victoria, BC in April 2004 with Lil and Bob and enjoyed the warmth, greenery and beautiful flowers. "Chief" was a loving and dedicated husband, father, deda, uncle and friend, with a wonderful sense of humour, mischievous smile and passion for life. He will be sadly missed by all. At Charly's request no service will be held. A private gathering will take place at Christmas. We would like to thank family and friends for their support during this difficult time. CORRECTION TEXT ADDITION MIRA SHEFF Mira Sheff passed away on August 27, 2004, in St. Boniface Hospital. She was a beautiful, selfless person who exuded goodness and kindness and devoted her life to her family and her belief in G-d. Mira was born
in Slonim, Poland. When the Nazis invaded Slonim and murdered her parents and sister, she was saved by a gentile couple who gave her a home and a job in a restaurant on the Russian border. During the war she met the love of her life, Joseph Sheff, whom she had known while in Slonim. They married in Austria in 1945 and came to New York in 1948. They settled in Perrineville, NJ, where they owned an egg farm. Along with her husband Joseph, a kind and gentle man, she devoted her whole being to raising their daughter Sylvia, their pride and joy. MIRA AND HER FAMILY MOVED TO BELMAR WHERE JOSEPH AND SHE OWNED AND OPERATED AN AMUSEMENT BUSINESS. In 1978, Mira and Joseph moved to North Lauderdale, FL, where Mira continued to reside after Joseph passed away in May 1979. When Sylvia married Perry, her bashert in 1983, Mira spent her winters in Florida and summers in Winnipeg. Mira was a kind and loving person whose radiant smile reflected the generosity of her spirit, and everyone who had the privilege of meeting her found themselves enriched by her endless desire to give. Her fine-honed intuition was always attuned to the happiness of others, from welcoming children to the amusements to bringing together her daughter and future son-in-law. Despite the tragedies of her early life, Mira was always focused on the joy of building the future, instilling her family with a deep sense of religious values that would have made her own parents proud, and ensuring that religious values and values of loving kindness continued with her grandchildren. She was a woman who rebuilt the world. Mira is survived by her devoted daughter Sylvia Schulman and husband Perry; and her grandchildren, Brendan and wife Dara, Justin and Marlon. Mira rests beside her husband Joseph in Menorah Gardens in Fort Lauderdale. Funeral services were conducted by Rabbi Michael Gold of Beth Torah Synagogue in Tamarac. Mira's family wishes to express its gratitude to the doctors, nursing staff, assistant nurses and orderlies of St. Boniface Hospital as well as caregivers, Viole Longara, Victoria Saromo, Joy Bautista, Josie Baptista and the staff of the Home Care Program for their exceptional care.
