GAIL GLESBY

GAIL RENEE GLESBY On Saturday, October 23, 2004, Gail Glesby found inner peace and happiness. Gail was born icon on November 2 1958, in Bemiji, MN. She was a gift from God to Stan and Lori Hendrickson. Gail was raised in International Falls, MN where she shared numerous memories with her sister Heidi and best friend Shannon. She later chased her "Rock Star" Bradley Beauchemin to Winnipeg, when in 1977 they were married. In 1980 they had a baby girl named Ashley Marie. In 1983 she found love for a second time with Raymond Glesby. They married in 1984 and were blessed with her "sonny boy" Dylan Ray in 1985. Following that Gail moved to St. Malo, where she met many friends and shared some more special memories. She then chose to move closer to her family and resided in Fort Frances for the next eight years. She once again left her impression and memories on numerous different friends. She just recently moved back to Winnipeg to be with her children and grandchildren who were her drive in life. Gail had a lot of friends, not a surprise to anyone. Her vibrant personality and sense of humour attracted people to her. She was known to be a "little" ball of life always chatty and laughing. Gail is survived by son Dylan; daughter Ashley (Martin); grandchildren, Austin and Samara; parents, Stan and Lori Hendrickson; sister Heidi (Gary); nieces, Cassidy and Kylie; and special friends, Sharon (Kelly), Darlene, Julie and Frankie. Gail will never be forgotten and a little piece of her will live on in her children and grandchildren. We would like to thank the nursing staff on GA4 at Health Sciences Centre. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. FREE BIRD If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be travelling on, now. There's too many places I haven't seen And if I stay here with you, now Things just wouldn't be the same Well I'm as free as a bird now, And a bird you can not change. Lord knows I can't change. NELLIE HERDA

NELLIE MARY HERDA (nee WITKO) On Saturday, October 23, 2004, Nellie Mary Herda, of Cook's Creek, MB, died in St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, after enduring several years of declining health. She was 91 years old. Nellie was predeceased by her husband Joseph Lawrence Herda in 1991 after nearly 60 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her parents Andrew and Anna Witko; and her brothers, Frank, Tom, Kaszmir, Michael and Ted. She is survived by her daughter Irene (Ron) Stevens of Selkirk, MB; and two sons, Jim (Audrey) Herda of Cook's Creek and Douglas (Dang) Herda of Kemptville, ON; six grandchildren, Judy and Chris, Karen, Susan and Lori and Jason; six great-grandchildren, Etta, Skyla and Colton, Ryan, Mathew and Luke. Survivors also include her three sisters, Frances Szalanski of Kenora, ON, Alma (Bill) Horodyski and Steffie Melnyk, both of Winnipeg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born January 13, 1913, Nellie lived on the family farm one mile west and one-half mile north of Garson and attended Garson school. She married a neighbour Joseph Herda, November 17, 1931. After spending several years on rented land in the Mayfield and Cook's Creek areas, the young couple were finally able to purchase an 80-acre farm at Cook's Creek where they established themselves for the rest of their lives. In addition to the farm, Joseph operated a threshing machine and a truck hauling gravel, grain, livestock and cordwood. He later became a licensed transfer operator before establishing in 1948 a service garage and an implement and car dealership in Oakbank, MB. All this while, Nellie tirelessly devoted herself to raising her family, maintaining the household and farm and supporting St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church which she attended regularly all her life. She took great pride in her garden, particularly the flowers. Nellie approached these tasks with a disarming smile, denoting an ability to look always on the bright side of life. To the end, never losing this buoyant disposition, she bore without complaint the mounting infirmities of age and ill health, fearful, as always, of imposing on others, yet ever grateful for small favours rendered. After the children had left home and Nellie was afforded some leisure time, she took up oil painting. Soon her house and those of her children were enlivened with her works from nature, especially of delicate flowers and brilliant leaves. She also enjoyed the companionship of working many summers in the restaurant at Elmhurst golf course. Her son Douglas, former RCMP officer, now retired, provided Nellie the opportunity for travel during the 1980s and early 1990s when he was posted as the RCMP liaison officer to Canadian Embassies and High Commissions in South East Asia. With her husband Joe, while he was still living, Nellie was able to visit Douglas at his postings in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. With her cousin Theresa Bodner, Nellie also toured extensively by bus throughout Canada and the United States. The family wishes to thank the many individual persons in her community and in the health care field who have supported and sustained Nellie during trying times. Special thanks are offered to the following: first, to those staff members of the emergency department and of Ward 5E of the St. Boniface Hospital who provided superior and dedicated service to Nellie while she was a patient in their care; second, to the staff of Misericordia Hospital who provided personal care; and third, to those who provided the opportunity for Nellie to engage in uplifting social activities in her own community. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, October 27 (tonight) at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Cook's Creek. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 28 at 10:30 a.m., also in the church with Father Boguslaw Wardzinski officiating. Interment to follow in the Parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 6 - 200 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, would be gratefully appreciated. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

ELIZABETH LAWLER

ELIZABETH MARGARET (BETTY) LAWLER It is with deep sadness that the family of Elizabeth Lawler announces her passing on October 24, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg. She celebrated her 80th birthday in March with many of her dear friends in attendance. She is survived by her husband Herbert and five children, John, David (June), Ann (Fred), Elizabeth (Rob), Jane (Jamie); and six grandchildren, John and Andrew Lawler, Fraser, Gordon and Robbie Bruce and Riley Black. Betty's love and study of painting began at the age of seven with lessons from Andre Bieler of Queen's University. Later in life, she returned to university and attained her B.F.A. at the School of Art, University of Manitoba. She was an accomplished artist and became a member of the Manitoba Society of Artists exhibiting her work in several shows. Her other love was reading and Betty poured through books of every kind at astonishing speed. Betty had many dear friends during the nine years she and Herb lived in London, ON, and enjoyed her volunteer years with the Maycourt Society. Among her many interests in Winnipeg, including her wonderfully full social life with her dear friends (her children always remarked that she did more in one week than they would do in a year), she was part of the Women's Committee of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Antiques Association. She was always thinking of others and has inspired many with her warmth and generosity. Some of her fondest memories were of her summers at Heming Lake in Northern Manitoba and at Lake of the Woods. Hosting cocktail parties, sewing, knitting, painting, baking - always a project on the go. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends for her cheery personality, wonderful sense of humour, great wit, strong spirit and her genuine interest in her friends. She adored her grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. A private gathering of close friends will be held in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Association would be greatly appreciated. This poem by Connie Ford, political activist, was found in Betty's diary - Most of us die slowly bit by bit, In some the body first, In some the wit, May my tongue last me right beside the pit that singing still, I tumble into it.
