LEO ARNAL Peacefully on October 26, 2004, Leo Arnal passed away at the age of 77 with his family at his side. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Stella; children, Real, Paulette (Lyle), Ginette, Dan (Lori), and Marcel (Brenda); grand-children, Kim, Marc (Dominique), Andrew (Sarah), Whitney, Allyson, Travis, Kaitlyn, and Tanner; great-grandchildren, Austin, Zachary, and Kaylen; as well as many brothers sisters and treasured friends. Born and raised in Fannystelle, Leo devoted his life to farming and hard work. He leaves behind a legacy of strength and courage that continues to inspire his family whom he loved so much. REV. MARTIN BALAGUS

REV. MARTIN BALAGUS Fr. Martin Balagus entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 24, 2004 in Sudbury, ON at the age of 75. Fr. Martin (Johnny) was born icon in Winnipeg on October 7, 1929. He attended St. Nicholas School and St. Nicholas Church where he served as an altar boy. At age sixteen, he entered the Basilian Fathers Novitiate (Ukrainian) in Mundare, AB in September 1945. After completing his novitiate, Fr. Martin continued his education in Basilian monasteries at Grimsby, ON, Glen Cove, Long Island, New York and finally at the Gregorian University in Rome for his Theological studies. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on October 20, 1957 in Rome by Metropolitan Maxim Hermaniuk. After returning to Canada, Fr. Martin received his Licentiate in Philosophy at the University of Ottawa and for a period of time taught at the Basilian College in Toronto. Fr. Martin went into Pastoral work serving the Ukrainian Catholic communities in Alberta and St. Mary's Parish in Vancouver, BC. He returned to eastern Canada and was accepted into the Archeparchy of Toronto by Bishop Borecki and served in parishes in Windsor and Hamilton. Fr. Martin then became Resident Pastor of St. Michael's Church in Coniston, ON and Assistant Pastor of St. Mary's Parish in Sudbury for nearly thirty-five years. On September 7, 2003 an appreciation dinner was held by his parishioners on the occasion of his retirement. Fr. Martin is survived by his brother Mickey (Dmetro) of Toronto; sister Ollie; brother Willie (Margaret); sister Marianne (Paul Smith); and sister-in-law Anne; all of Winnipeg; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, Ksenia and Peter; sister Anne and husband Stanley Masik; brother Joseph; sister-in-law Christine; brother-in-law Al Miller; and his niece Judy Davis who passed away on October 20, 2004 in Colorado Springs, CO. Divine Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 29 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. BERNICE BOND

MYRTLE BERNICE BOND (nee ALBRIGHT) Bernice Bond, formerly of Winnipeg passed away peacefully at the Beausejour Hospital, Beausejour, MB on October 24, 2004. She was born icon in Emerson, MB on October 16, 1915, daughter of Harold Ludlow and Stella Albright. She was predeceased by her dear husband Frank; her parents; her brothers, Bill, Gordon and Dana; as well as many others of her family and her friends. Bernice graduated from Brandon College and later earned her Masters of Education degree from the University of Manitoba. She taught in several schools before coming to Kelvin High in Winnipeg and was asked to transfer to Chrischill High School when it opened later. There she worked for many years as a well-known and beloved Sr. English teacher until her retirement in 1975. She will long be remembered by her sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews, and their families. We wish to thank the caregivers at Stony Plains Personal Care Unit for brightening the last years of her life with their cheerful kindness and caring, and also the Beausejour Hospital for their help and concern. The Lord lift up His countenance upon her and give her peace. JOHN BOUMA John Bouma, aged 67 years, passed away at Minoru Residence, Richmond, on October 26, 2004. MARIE-ANGE CADIEUX (nee BRETON) Our beloved mother passed away peacefully at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home on Saturday, October 23, 2004 surrounded by her family, at the age of 98 years. She is survived by one daughter Laurette Tetrault (Norbert) and three sons, Maurice (Marie), Jacques (Roberta) of Ottawa and Brunel (Carol); 11 grandchildren, Monelle, Carmen, Lynn, Ronald, Elaine, Laura, Jean-Jacques, Daniel, Nicole, Marc, Joel and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Annette (Tom Cadieux) of Montreal. She was predeceased by her husband Eudore in 1979; her mother Marie-Anne Barnabe; her father, Narcisse Breton; sisters, Flora and Yvonne Robert; brothers, Albert and Wilfrid. Mom was born icon in Letellier on November 12, 1905, taught school in rural Manitoba until she married Dad in 1935. Mom remained active in local activities such as CWL until she moved to St. Boniface in 1978. There she enjoyed many Sunday brunches with her friends, and spent leisurely hours playing cards and doing cryptograms. A funeral mass will be presided by Fr. Marcel Toupin on Saturday, October 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Sts-Martyrs-Canadiens, 289 Dussault Ave., Windsor Park, Winnipeg, MB. KENNETH CAMPION

KENNETH CAMPION It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother and uncle, Kenneth Elbert Campion, aged 85 years, at the Selkirk General Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2004. Ken lived his entire life in Old England. He was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Clements Anglican Church, where he served as Sexton, (Grounds-keeper, grave digger, custodian and bell-ringer), until his recent retirement. Ken leaves to mourn his passing his brother Marshall and sister-in-law Lucille and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Sarah Campion; his brothers, Chester and Ronald and his sister Bonnie. Ken's great-nephews will be his pallbearers. The viewing will be held on Friday, October 29 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Gilbart's Funeral Home, Selkirk. Funeral services will be held in St. Clements Anglican Church on Saturday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Canon Godfrey Mawejje officiating. Interment to follow in the churchyard cemetery. NORMAN CLARKE

NORMAN GEORGE CLARKE On October 25, 2004 Norm passed away after a brave battle with Alzheimer's. Norm is survived by his beloved wife Florence (Dolly) who was his steadfast caregiver over the past years during his illness. He also leaves to cherish his memory his children, Heather (Tom Frain) and Gregory; special granddaughter Julia Frain; sister Elsie Pennie; brother Jim Clarke; special friend Sean Ross; brother-in-law Howard Smith (Evelyn); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Elizabeth Clarke. Norm was born icon on November 25, 1928 and raised in Brandon, MB. Norm was a splendid dancer and met Dolly Smith at Clear Lake at Danceland. They married in 1956. In 1963, with their two children, they moved to Winnipeg. Norm was involved in the automotive industry for most of his career where he made many long term friends. Fraternally, Norm was initiated in the Red River Lodge in 1965. He was a past active member of the Valley of Winnipeg A & ASR Lodge, attaining the highest order of the 33rd degree in Scottish Rite. He was involved in the Khartum Temple Pipes and Drums and the Khartum Arabian Horse Guard with his beloved horse Surtaff. More recently, Norman was a Mason with the combined Lodges of Red River and Charleswood. Norm was invited to be a member of the Royal Order of Scotland in April 1998 and was a member of the Cameron Highlanders Pipe Band for many years. These organizations provided many deep lasting friendships and memorable fun times. Norm loved his family deeply and was a wonderful father. He was very involved with his children in an era when most fathers were not. He could often be found on the skating rink or toboggan hill, camping with Boy Scouts, teaching his son to drum and ride the horse or even chasing fire trucks with Heather when she was a toddler. He was proud of his children's accomplishments and was always there to encourage them with support in their education and career endeavours. Upon retirement, Norm and Dolly walked many miles a day and took up golf while enjoying their extended summers at the cottage in Clear Lake. Norm also enjoyed travelling the world with the Massed Pipe Band to the Silver Broom and the Rose Bowl Parades. The winter months found Norm and his wife spending time travelling to Maui, Hawaii and Coolangatta, Australia. His quick wit and charm were enjoyed by all. We will miss him. TONY COLLINS

TONY COLLINS Mr. Tony Collins, aged 67 years, beloved husband of Phyllis of Lac du Bonnet, MB passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at his home. He is survived by his wife Phyllis; his brothers, John (Flo), Billy (Marge) and Robert (Jackie) all of Wales; also nieces and nephews. He was employed as a correctional officer at Milner Ridge for over 10 years retiring in 2002. He served in the British Army in the Persian Gulf, Africa; the Suez Canal and Cypress. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, Park Avenue East, Beausejour, MB with Rev. Louis Pellissier officiating. DAVID DARRACH

DAVID RUPERT DARRACH On Sunday, October 24, 2004, Dave passed away at the Grace General Hospital at the age of 76 years. He is survived by his wife, Beth, of 52 years of marriage; children, Bruce (Diane), Ian (Carol), Scott (Ingrid) and Allison Sutton (Bob); seven grandchildren, Amanda, Kevin, Scott, Owen, Chaz, Sean and Leah; and his brother Peter (Doli). Dave was predeceased by his parents; and his sister Margaret (Peggie). On July 29, 1928, David was born icon to Rhoda and Milton Darrach in Isaac's Harbour, NS. He attended school in Halifax spending summers at his family home in Herring Cove, NS. After completing grade 12, he took an accounting course in Halifax. He then served three and a half years with the RCAF. Dave was employed as a Cost Accountant for several Winnipeg firms before forming his own company, Darrach Business Systems, in 1968. A Celebration of Dave's Life will be held on Friday, October 29 at 1:30 p.m. in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Dr. Interment will take place at a later date. DONNA ANN DESMARAIS (WOOD) (nee GIESBRECHT) October 14, 1941 - October 24, 2004 Peacefully on Sunday afternoon, Donna passed away at the Grace Hospital with her daughter by her side. All the living family members that remain on the earth are, her husband Fernie; daughter Kim (Ernie) and their son David; son Curtis (Gabriella) and their children, Avila, Xavier and Sasha; sister Barbara (Walter) Reimer; brothers, Bob (Cindy), Gary (Carolyn); nieces and nephews, Michael, Neil, Kelly, Holly, Jonathan, Zachery, Krystle, Kara-lynn; the children of her nieces and nephews, Shawn, Tyler, Jordon, Alex; and Fernie's children, Bob (Nancy) and their son Paul, and Karen (Bernie) and children Kristen and Stephanie. Donna grew up in Carmen, moved to Winnipeg at the age of 19 and married Curtis Wood at the age of 23. She worked at various Manitoba government jobs and sang in the Manitoba Government Choir. In 1971, Donna moved to White Rock, BC where she stayed until 1981, when she returned to Winnipeg and continued working with the government, with the last department being the Law Courts. Donna and Fernie were married in 1991. We celebrate her life. It wasn't fair that she went first because we wanted to be there first to greet her with open arms. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital for their care and compassion. A prayer service will be held on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Temple in the Buntaine Chapel, 400 Hargrave St., with Pastor Bruce Martin officiating. HELEN DOUGHIE Peacefully, at her home, Helen passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at the age of 81 years. Helen is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Malcolm; daughters, Diane Church (Wayne Yantke) and Debbie (Aldert) Walstra; grandchildren, Tracy (Jeff) Manchen, Chris and Curtis Walstra; great-grandson Ethan Manchen; sister Dorothy; other relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Annie Hughes; brother Syd; and sister Jean. Helen was born icon and raised in the Elmwood area. After marrying Malcolm, they raised their family in North Kildonan. She devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. Helen will be sadly missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank all the staff of the Palliative and Home Care programs. NORA GIESBRECHT 1925 - 2004 Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, Nora Giesbrecht passed away on October 26, 2004 at Concordia Hospital at the age of 78 years. Nora is lovingly survived by four sisters, Susan Dyck, Mary Giesbrecht, Nettie (John) Voth, and Hilda (John) Dueck; three brothers, Abram, Peter (Anne) and Gordon (Phyllis). Numerous nieces and nephews also cherish her memory. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 E. at Navin Road with viewing one half hour prior to service. Interment will follow in Green Acres Cemetery. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Caners and the nursing staff on the 3rd floor at Concordia Hospital for their compassion and care.
