JAMES BECK

JAMES BECK January 1920 - November 2004 On November 29, 2004, James Beck went to be in the presence of his Lord. Left missing him are his wife of 52 years, Ethel (nee Davie); his children, Robert Beck and Beryl Baldwin (Allan); the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Joanna and Josiah Baldwin; sisters, Eleanor Beck and Nancy Brisebois (Alf); as well as his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Bill Rankine, Neil Rankine and Hugh Rankine; and his sister, Fanny Swan. Jim was a man of peace. In 1938, he joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and served for the duration of the Second World War. When he came home, he worked at Canada Post until his retirement, after which he went to work for Reed Stenhouse. He finally retired in 1986. Jim was also a man of faith. He lived out his Christianity daily. He was a truly godly example of a "servant" to all who witnessed his life. He was willing to do whatever needed to be done, quietly and without recognition. We would like to thank the nurses and doctors of both Concordia and St. Boniface Hospitals, as well as the ambulance attendants, who treated Jim with both dignity and respect, for the compassion you showed. We deeply miss you, husband, dad, grandpa, brother, but we look forward to being with you again one day. Funeral to take place on Saturday, December 4 at 1:00 p.m. at Church of the Rock, 1397 Buffalo Pl., Winnipeg. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church of the Rock, 1397 Buffalo Pl., Winnipeg, MB R3T 1L6 or The Billy Graham Association, 20 Hopewell Way NE, Calgary, AB T3J 5H5. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715 Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca

EVYLIN BERGEN

EVYLIN AGNES BERGEN (nee EPP) 1923 - 2004 Evylin died peacefully on December 1, 2004 comforted by family. Throughout her later years Mom dealt stoically with a variety of medical challenges, including diabetes., stroke, partial paralysis, and the loss of the majority of her vision to macular degeneration. Whenever she acknowledged the frustration of her limitations, she would simply end with the statement, "Well, but so it goes..." Born on a farm near Laird, SK in 1923, Mom was one of 11 children. She is survived by her sisters, Rosella (Bergen) and Darlene (Bergman); and brothers, Orlando and Ronald. Mom married Jacob Bergen in 1942. Together they raised a family of four, Rodger (Nancy), Jim (Terry), Verginia (Monty Aldous) and Brian (Mary). Over the years, her family continued to grow to include nine grandchildren, their spouses and partners and five great-grandchildren. To her deep sorrow, her dearest love and best friend Jake predeceased her in 1999. Evylin and Jake lived in Fort Garry from the 1950s until Dad's death. Their neighbours were also their close friends, and their joint love of gardening made their home a summer spectacle of colour, and a neighbourhood source of fresh vegetables. Their home was a gathering place where unexpected guests were always welcomed and well fed. In addition to raising her family, Mom worked many years in the food services industry, primarily at Van Buren's Restaurant, which used to occupy the junction of University Crescent and Pembina Highway. Mom was a skilled seamstress and knitter. She also loved to read, loved to play the organ, loved to sing, and it was a great loss to her when her stroke robbed her of those abilities. For a time, the CNIB Talking Book Library partially filled that need. All those she touched throughout her life are going to miss her greatly. We wish to express our grateful thanks to Dr. R.J. Hayward, Mom's physician for many years, and to the caring staff on the third floor at Victoria Hospital. You made Mom's many visits as your patient as comfortable as possible. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 6 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Viewing will take place one half hour prior to the service. Interment and reception will follow. In lieu of the transient beauty of flowers, a donation to the CNIB, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or your favourite charity would express a lasting tribute. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715 Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca.

THADDEUS CHARNE

THADDEUS (TED) LAWRENCE CHARNE Q.C. It is with sadness that we announce the accidental death of our father on Sunday, November 14, 2004 in Winnipeg, MB. Dad leaves to mourn and celebrate his life, his beloved wife Claire; children, Theresa (Fred Miller), Catherine (Larry Sheppard), Thaddeus Jr. (Sheila Frising); and grand-children, Dustin and Lauren Sheppard. Dad was predeceased by his father William John Charne in 1971 and mother Stephanie Gladys Charne in 1994. Born in Winnipeg, Dad spent his youth in Minnedosa and Winnipeg, as well as Edmonton, AB. He graduated from the University of Alberta, and the Manitoba Law School in 1949. He was a member of the Manitoba and Canadian Bar Associations and a lecturer for the Law Society of Manitoba's bar admission course. Dad was associated with Arnovitch and Leipsic as a Vice President and General Counsel, specializing in corporate and real estate law. In 1968 he was appointed by then Manitoba Attorney-General, the Honourable Sterling Lyon, Queen's Counsel on the Honour's List. In 1970 he became Vice President of St. Maurice Capital Corporation Ltd. and President of St. Maurice's real estate development subsidiary, St. Maurice Properties Ltd. In 1971 Dad assisted Commerce Capital Properties Ltd. to develop and manage shopping centres. In 1978 he purchased Commerce Capital Properties Ltd. and renamed the company, now known as First Commercial Management Inc. He also served as Director and Vice President of Eaton Bay Financial Services in 1979. Dad was proud of his accomplishment in forming the largest privately owned commercial property management and development company in Western Canada. In 2003 Dad sold First Commercial Management Inc. He was still not ready to retire and had recently reincorporated Commerce Capital Properties Ltd. and reacquired ownership and management of two shopping centres because he believed that life was worth living if one had a new challenge to face each day. Dad was a director of several Canadian corporations and community service organizations. He served on the church and finance committee of St. Mary's Cathedral. He was a director and member of the executive committee of the central region of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. He was a charter member and past president of the Serra Club of Winnipeg as well as a member of the Winnipeg Knights of Columbus Council 1107. In 1978 he travelled to Guatemala as part of Omni Child International. Dad had an active interest in the construction and establishment of St. John Brebeuf Church parish, church and school. He was instrumental in the relocation of the Convent of the Sacred Heart School from Westgate to Tuxedo. He was an Honorary Member of the Law Society of Manitoba, a Fifty Year Member of the Winnipeg Real Estate Board and a member of the International Council of Shopping Centres. Dad was also an Associate of the Faculty of Management at the University of Manitoba. He was also a member of the Winnipeg Winter Club and St. Charles Country Club. Dad was devoted to his family and throughout his life displayed fairness, integrity, vigor, fun, hospitality and community involvement. Dad's greatest joys involved his family. He enjoyed over 50 years of marriage with his one true love, Claire. Our happiest memories are of the love and companionship we shared during numerous vacations and time spent around Dad's pool house affectionately known as the "Taj Mahal." Dad had many friendships he treasured, both business and personal. Being an only child he valued all his relatives, always making an effort to "keep in touch". Dad was a great raconteur with an ability to tell stories that few could match. His hobbies were work and golf. He spent many hours perfecting his game on the greens at St. Charles Country Club. He was looking forward to the coming season and the chance to play pain free, following his second knee replacement surgery in September 2004. A funeral service and celebration of Dad's life will be held at St. John Brebeuf Church, Lanark and Fleet, with Msgr. Normand Chartrand P.A., Msgr. Ward Jamieson P.H. and Fr. Joseph Johnson S.J. officiating, on Monday, December 6 at 10:30 a.m. Prayers will be held on Sunday, December 5 at 5:00 p.m. at St. John Brebeuf Church. Active pallbearers will be Messrs: Darren Bean, Greg Mathews, Dick Ritchie, Peter Sharpe, Laurent Soret, Gerald Terry, and Blaine Harmen. Honorary pallbearers will be Messrs: Elmer Bergman, Ted Lismer, Ross Nugent, Dario Perfumo, Joseph Stangel K.S.G. and Dr. Jim McGoey. Internment to follow in the family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery. Funeral arrangements in care of Glen Eden Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Funeral Home. Flowers gratefully declined. Should friends so desire, contributions can be made to the Concordia Hospital Foundation, Thaddeus Charne Arthroplasty Research Fund, 1095 Concordia Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2K 3S8. During the past two years Dad had worked passionately to help create this new foundation to help others, whose quality of life would be greatly improved by knee or hip replacement. We love you and will miss you Dad. You will be forever in our hearts!

DORIS DAVIS

DORIS LILLIAN DAVIS It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Doris Lillian Davis on December 2, 2004 after a many-years battle with cancer and other health problems. To the very last day, Doris showed the lifelong vigor and tenacity that has carried her over the last 80 years. She leaves to mourn, Sid, her soul-mate and devoted husband of 58 years; sons, Stephen (Roslyn) of Winnipeg, Alan (Rosemary) of Calgary; and daughter Brenda (Don) of Connecticut, USA. Born in Edmonton, London, England on April 6, 1925, Doris, after war service with the R.A.F., married Sid, the love of her life in January 1946 and thence concentrated on being a loving, hardworking and conscientious wife and mother. Her ready smile and helping hand reflected her true generosity of spirit, and she was always "Nanny" to her six grandchildren, Amanda, Angela and Shannon in Calgary, Dereck in Winnipeg, Matthew in Steinbach and Bronwen in Connecticut. On October 15, 2004, it gave her great pleasure to hold in her arms her great-grandson Adison Davis, born icon to Dereck and Roxanne on October 14, 2004. Although for many years she was never without pain, she invariably had a pleasant smile and a warm welcome for everyone, and she often looked back fondly on the numerous happy days spent with Sid and friends at the North Centennial Seniors' Association. In the years Sid spent with D.N.D. Air Force, the family travelled extensively, especially while in Europe. Also, while living in France, Doris discovered her talent for oil painting and over the years produced numerous fine paintings, many of which are proudly hanging in houses in many parts of Canada and the United States, they are mementos of her happy life lived on two continents. The family wishes to extend grateful thanks to members of the Palliative Care staff who attended Doris during her last months, especially to Chris Carlyle, her special nurse; to Lorraine, her home helper; also to Dr. Colin Fletcher for his good advice and services. We are missing you so very much, Doris and the memory of your time with us will be in our hearts forever. For us, you were the light at both ends of the tunnel. Cremation has taken place and in accordance with Doris' wishes, no formal service will be held.
