DR. PETER LEITRANTS

Died on Jan. 17th, 2001 at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. Peter was inflicted with a rare and lethal illness. The staff at Thunder Bay Regional Hosp. McKellar and the HSC did the utmost to save the life of this wonderful man. Peter practiced as a gastroenterologist/internist in Thunder Bay since 1984. He loved medicine and felt a strong committment to his community and colleagues. He is survived by his wife Lisa, two sons Colin and Cameron, his mother Anna Leitrants, parents-in-law Arnold and Jean Klayh, brothers-in-law John Barry, and Keith, sisters-in-law Karen, Bonnie and Erica, cousins Charles, Erika, May, Eva and Marita and many nieces and nephews. Peter was a kind, generous man. He was in love with the pursuit of knowledge and was a deeply spiritual man. His loss will be felt deeply by all who knew him. May we find the strength to carry on in the practical and reasonable manner he did. Watch over us from heaven Peter. Many thanks to the staff at McKellar Hospital: Dr. Almond, Dr. Hamid, Dr. Holtby, Dr. Weeks, also Dr. Hargadon, and Dr. Fidler. A special thanks to Dr. Stuart Holtby who tirelessly supported Peter’s family in this time, and made many accurate and difficult decisions. Thanks to the medical staff at the HSC: Dr. Z. B. Shouty, Dr. C. Peschken, Dr. G. Eschun and Dr. Peter Warren who fathered us through this painful process. As well, may the many wonderful people of the community of Thunder Bay know just how much Peter’s family appreciate the incredible caring and generosity they have shown to us. We would kindly appreciate donations to the new Thunder Bay Regional Hospital in lieu of flowers. Funeral Services for Peter will be held January 24th at 1 p.m. at First Christian Reformed Church on Cooper Rd. 8 km West of Thunder Bay Mall off Arthur St.

McGAULEY, Angel Christina (nee) Cavanaugh

27 years, on January 13, 2001, at Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital. Loving mother of Lucretia. Wife of Rodney. Beloved daughter of Lucky and Ron Cavanaugh of Windsor. Memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2001 11:00 A.M. in the Gym at Dennis Franklin High School (Northwood High School) - Churchill drive side. Memorial Tributes to “The Lucretia McGauley Trust Fund”, kindly make cheques payable to Ronald Cavanaugh.

GOTRO

Mrs. Geanetta (Jean) Gotro, age 97 years, a resident of Bethammi Nursing Home, passed away at her residence on Friday, January 19, 2001. Born in Walford, Ontario, she was raised in Spanish, Ontario and lived most of her life in the Sudbury District, she moved to Thunder Bay in 1979. Jean loved the arts, and in her earlier years enjoyed spending her free time painting. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her two sons; Gerald (Shirley), Sydney, B.C., Lloyd (Jacqueline), Kelowna, B.C., daughter; Marilyn Gotro, Thunder Bay, five granchildren; Karen Cayen, Vancouver, B.C., Lynn (Mike) VanDenElzen, Kelowna, B.C., Mark Gotro, Kelowna, B.C. Mark, Darren, and Brian Gotro, Kelowna, B.C., and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Frederick (1979), one brother, and six sisters. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Joseph's Heritage, officiated by Rev. J.C. Philippe. Interment at Riverside Cemetery. Should friends desire donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Thunder Bay would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street.

ELFRIEDE JOSEPHA KIMMERLE

Oct. 17, 1929 to Jan. 18, 2001

After a lengthy and well fought battle with cancer, Elfriede left us on January 18. With heavy hearts we said our good byes and watched Mama slip away from us. The knowledge that Mama is no longer suffering makes this passage easier to accept. Our hope is that Ludwig & Elfriede will reunite to continue their journey together. Elfriede is predeceased by her husband Ludwig and survived by her children; Ludwig Kimmerle Jr. & wife Fiona Gordon, Viktoria Kimmerle & husband Kevin Kalyta, Sylvia Kimmerle and granddaughter Viktoria Kalyta. Friends are invited to join family at the Zero-100 Motel in Marathon on Friday, January 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wilson Memorial General Hospital in Marathon or The Northwestern Ontario Cancer Clinic.

O'Brien, Lorrain
January 22, 2001

Mr. Lorrain Jospeh (Larry) O’Brien age 75 years, a resident of Spruce Court, passed away peacefully at McKellar Hospital after a brief illness on Friday, January 19th, 2001. Larry was born icon in Quadeville, Ontario on June 7th, 1925 and received his education there, coming to Northern Ontario in 1946 where he worked as a scaler for the Department of Lands and Forests in Caramat and later as a stationary engineer at paper mills and hospitals in Marathon and Sault Ste. Marie. Larry was Business Manager for the Service Employees International Union 268 for 25 years until his retirement in 1989. After retiring Larry enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing and spending time with his family and his loving pet Mikey. He is survived by Margaret his wife of 52 years, sons: Kevin (Gerin), Donald (Susan) of Edmonton (enroute) Wayne of Ottawa (enroute) and grandchildren: Tyler, Carly, Nancy and Meagan, as well as brothers: Basil, Sylvester, Jim and sister Anicita. Predeceased by his parents Nora and Thomas O’Brien. Numerous other relatives also survive. A special thank you to Dr. Sacevich and the staff of 4 South McKellar for their caring and support. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Dominic’s Church with Rev. Daniel Lapolla C.S. officiating. A private family interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date. If friends so desire donations to the Care Beyond Compare Campaign or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Kondreska, Donna Marie

KONDRESKA

Mrs. Donna Marie Kondreska age 53 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died on Saturday January 21, 2001. Donna had lived here all of her life and for the past 25 years worked for the MNR at several different positions, most recently at the Fire Center. She was married to Edwin Kondreska on February 15, 1975. She enjoyed needlepoint, cross stitching, candle making and her pride and joy her Maltese Krispin and Kassandra. She is survived by her husband Edwin, mother-in-law Julie Kondreska, sister-in-law Valerie Victor and her husband Paul, nephew Cory Victor and his wife Stacey, very good friends Cybil Johnson, Alan and Rhonda Chernosky, Diane Lemieux and Beatrice Wideman. She was predeceased by her parents Reid and Ester. Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 24, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dan Lapolla c.s. of St. Dominic’s Church officiating. Services will be complete in the chapel. If friends desire memorials to the Pet Trust, University of Guelph.

A tree will be planted in memory of Donna Kondreska in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual Dedication service Sunday, June 24, 2001.

McGAULEY, ANGEL CHRISTINA

The McGauley family would like to express their extreme sadness of the loss of their dear wife, mother & daughter-in-law Angel aged 27 who passed away peacefully Saturday, January 13, 2001 after a brave battle against cancer. Born May 13, 1973 to Ron and Lucky Cavanaugh. She graduated high school in 1990 then later moved to Thunder Bay where she met and married her husband Rodney in 1996. The two then began their family with the birth of their beautiful daughter Lucretia, April 6, 2000. Angel was a very strong willed young lady who enjoyed spending time with her two cats, their dog Diggem, camping, sunbathing, dancing, reading and learning new things and mostly spending time with her family and friends. Angel was loved by many and has left a lasting impression on us all. Although she has been called away form us so early - she has left us with so much - She will live on in our hearts and especially in the beautiful gift she has given us. Her daughter Lucretia. Survived by her husband Rodney McGauley Jr., and daughter Lucretia of Thunder Bay, mother and father-in-law Marlene and Rodney McGauley Sr. of Thunder Bay, sister-in-law Tammy McGauley (Dayna) of Thunder Bay, brother-in-law Robert McGauley (Nikol and Jesse of Thunder Bay), mother and father Lucky and Ron Cavanaugh of Windsor, brother Scott Cavanaugh of Ottawa (and his two children of Windsor), grandmother Daisy Cavanaugh of Windsor and many more family and friends. Out of lack of respect for Rodney and his family, a memorial service was quickly held on Sunday January 20, 2001. The McGauley family would like to apologize to all that were unable to pay their respects due to such short notice. Thank you all so much for all the phone calls, gifts, visits & for all who were with us in Silent Prayer. It will always be remembered. In lieu of gifts, the McGauley family asks that donations be made to the Cancer Society in memory of Angel.

PENNER

Mrs. Micheline (Mikey) Penner, a resident of Walsh Street, passed away at her residence, on January 19, 2001. Born in Ottawa, she moved to Emo as a child and then to Thunder Bay.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband Orval (Bobo), son Dr. Darrell Penner (Barb) - Calgary, daughters; Darcee McKinnon (Mark) and Deenna Penner, Grandchildren; Christy and Thomas Mckinnon and Jesse and Reilly Penner. She was predeceased by her parents Dr. William George Boyle and Germaine Boyle. At Mikey's request there will be no service. Arrangements entrusted to the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street.

NEIL LANDON McKAY

Neil Landon McKay, August 24, 1911-January 18, 2001, passed away at Sarnia General Hospital. After 36 years with Ontario Hydro, he retired as the provincial line coordinator. Then he proceeded to act as a consultant for Jamaican Power, and then later for the Churchill Falls Power Corporation. Neil is survived by his loving wife Evelyn (Cole) McKay, Box 924, Corunna and his children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchild, Neil Cole McKay (son) and wife Beverley, their sons, Adam McKay and fiancee Cyndi Stinson, Jeff McKay and wife Michelle and their daughter Hannah (Neil’s first great-grandchild). All reside in Alberta. Heather (McKay) Penman (daughter) and her husband Brian and their sons Jason and Stephen Penman; all of Milton, Ontario. Gavin McKay (son) and wife Doreen of Bangkok, Thailand. Wallace McKay (son) and wife Julie and daughter Rhonda (McKay) LeGros and husband Robert LeGros; all of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Survived by his sisters Gwen (McKay) Chapman of Rochester, New York, Ann (McKay) MacDonald of London, Gladys (McKay) McCrank of Calgary and Marion (McKay) Scott of Stratford. He was predeceased by his brother Malcom and his sister Helene (McKay) Lortie. A private family funeral service was held from D.J. ROBB FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, January 20th. Sympathy may be expressed through memorial donations to the Victoria Order of Nurses or the Lambton Hospitals’ Foundation.

SPILLETT

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear mother and friend Lillian Spillett, age 80 years. She passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - McKellar Site on Wednesday, January 17, 2001. Lillian was born icon in South Braintree, Massachusetts September 22, 1920 and moved to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia as a young girl. Here she lived with her parents Henry and Nellie Mason on a small farm and orchard. She was working at a Bakery in Halifax when she met her future husband Earl, who was serving on the HMCS Matapedia, a corvette as an able bodied seaman. They just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on December 03, 2000. Lillian was employed for 20 years at the Ministry of Natural Resources Forest Station retiring in 1981 as part of the ‘Old Gang’. She worked, raised her family and kept a lovely home. She loved the outdoors enjoying camping, fishing, hunting, hiking and picnics and always took great pleasure out of these activities. The small things in life mattered the most to her. She was an extremely generous person and would do anything to help someone in need. Lillian is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Earl; four daughters Sandra Walters, Shirley (Norm) Syrja, Sharleen (Brian) Warren and Brenda (Jim) Ovenstone, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held at Wesley United Church, 130 N. Brodie Street on Wednesday, January 24th, at 11:30 a.m. officiated by Rev. Jennifer Uhryniw. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be welcome by the Faye Peterson Transition House or a charity of your choice. Mom’s gracious journey of life has ended and may she now find everlasting peace with our Lord and Saviour. Until we meet again dearest mother.

BAKER, JAMES DONALD

Jim passed away at home early Sunday morning, January 14th, peacefully and unexpectedly. Born on October 30, 1950, he was the eldest son of Virginia and Don Baker of Thunder Bay, Ontario. He is also survived by brother Richard of Toronto, Ontario, sister Kathy Lebel, her husband Richard, (Nolalu) and nephews Aaron, (Barrie, ON), Adam and Peter (Thunder Bay). He is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He lived the early years of his life in Port Arthur (later Thunder Bay) attending primary and secondary schools there and graduating from P.A.C.I. He later attended the Montana School of Mines in Buffe, Montana. He was a star high school football player in Port Arthur, assisting the P.A.C.I. Redmen in an undefeated season in his junior year. In the early 1970’s, Jim moved to Nova Scotia. He quickly came to love the Annapolis Valley and made his home on the North Mountain. With innumerable friends in Kings County, he lived his life there as an invaluable member of a large and vibrant community of artists and musicians. He was an active participant in the lives of all his friends and was also held in high regard by the children who knew him. He was a talented woodworker and instrument maker, displaying creative vision in all that he did. He was a central figure and lap steel player in the electric and promising band “Rural Deliver”. He’ll be sorely missed by his bandmates, Harry, George, Brian and Allan, as well as all his many friends. He continues to be a positive influence to that community, who all remember a very kind friend. Following Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A musical service has taken place at the Burlington Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Serenity Cremation and Funeral Specialists Inc. of Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

SYKES

Mrs. Jessie Mary (May) Sykes (Forrest) aged 91, passed away peacefully in Pioneer Ridge Home for the aged, Thunder Bay, Ontario on Monday, March 26, 2001. Born in Fort William, Ontario, May was raised in Hymers, Ontario and educated in the Thunder Bay District. Predeceased by her husband Gerald, brothers John, Jim and David and sister Moira. May is survived by her daughter Kay, husband Robert, their four children and seven grandchildren; her son Michael and wife Jan; her sister Betty McCutcheon, sisters-in-law Elaine Forrest, Margaret Forrest and Mimi Forrest and nieces and nephews. May and Gerald married in 1931 and spent the first eight years of their marriage in Kaministakwa (Dog River) and moved to Geraldton in 1939. In 1955 they returned to Port Arthur and May was involved with the Port Arthur Curling Club, Hymers Fair, and numerous bridge clubs. May enjoyed gardening, reading and bird watching and was a member of St. Paul’s United Church. Special thank you to May’s niece Patricia Forrest and the staff of Plaza 3, Pioneer Ridge for their kind and loving care. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date.

Declan M. Barry, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Declan Barry died peacefully in the early hours of Friday, March 30, 2001, with his loving wife and friends by his side. Declan was born icon in Cork, Ireland, in 1946 and received his education at Presentation Brothers College and the University College Cork – National University of Ireland. He left Cork to accept a post-doctoral fellowship at Cambridge University in England. He then moved to Exeter to work with English Electric as a Senior Design Engineer developing new satellite communications technology. Wanting to make better use of his education and industrial experience, Declan moved into academia and accepted a position with the Department of Industrial Technology at the University of Bradford in England. Lakehead University was fortunate to have attracted Declan to its Faculty of Engineering in 1980, where he served the university and the students admirably until his retirement in September 2000. Declan valued highly his dual role as engineer and professor. He made every effort to convey a sense of ethics and history in all that he taught, to the great appreciation of his former students. Declan was an extremely intelligent, knowledgeable man, but, far more importantly, he was a kind, honest, and generous soul who had diverse interests and talents. He was the President of the Cambrian Players for two years and participated in many productions as both actor and director. He also worked professionally for Magnus Theatre, having possessed an absolutely classic Shakespearean voice. Declan will be sadly and forever missed by his wife, Nanci MacIvor; his children, Amy Kate and Fergus (of Bingley, England); and his brother, Aidan, and Aidan’s family (of New Hampshire). Declan is survived by his mother, Tess (of Cork, Ireland), and was predeceased by his father, Cornelius, and his favourite uncle, Bartholomew Britton. A service in memory and celebration of Declan’s life will take place at the Blake Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 2, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
A tree will be planted in memory of Declan Barry in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday June 23, 2002.

Myrna Lori Kay Roberts

September 27th, 1971 – March 29th, 2001
Lori Roberts passed away peacefully after a lengthy battle with cancer, on Thursday March 29th, 2001 in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital – McKellar Site.
Lori was born icon in Springdale, Newfoundland and was raised and educated in Roberts Arm, Newfoundland.
She moved to Marathon at the age 19 years for employment and later moved to Thunder Bay in 1997.
Lori will be lovingly remembered by her husband Dwayne, parents Fred and Ruth Colborne, Barbara and Jerome Roberts, her twin sister Lisa of Marathon, Denise (Wade) Budgull of Marathon, brother Mike (Pam) of Alberta, nieces Monica and Ericka, nephews Warren, Tyler, Ashton & Tristan, sister-in-law Lori-Lyn (John) Oliveira of Manitouwadge.
Memorial donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Funeral services for Lori will be held in Roberts Arm, Newfoundland.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue (623-3433).
