Louis E. Battiston

August 1st, 1926 – March 28th, 2001
Mr. Louis E. Battiston, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, March 28th, 2001 in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital – McKellar Site. Louis was born icon and raised in Fort William. He served his country in the Canadian Army during WWII. He moved to Kenora with his family and founded Lakeside Printing & Publishing and then moved back to Thunder Bay in 1971 where he worked until his retirement. His memory will be cherished by his wife of 49 years, Clara (nee: Lark), sons Arthur Douglas of Toronto, Murray Louis (Shevaune) of Kelowna, B.C., 3 brothers, Roland, Lee and Benny, 2 sisters, Vilma (John) Mauro, Delia Littlefair and many nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue. A memorial mass for Mr. Battiston will be held on Monday, April 2nd, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Dominics Church with Reverend Dan Lapolla officiating. Interment in Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Kidney Foundation or the Northwestern Ontario Cancer Research Foundation, Mended Hearts or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.

Anderson

Ann (Anna) Anderson, age 92 years of Apt 102, 30 Secord Street, passed away peacefully in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - Port Arthur General site on Thursday, March 29, 2001. Born in Austria, she came to Canada to Hurkett in 1913 with her parents and sister and to Port Arthur in 1926. She was married here in 1934 to Everett Anderson. Ann was predeceased by her husband Everett in 1979 and sister Elizabeth Anderson (Edwin) in 1982. Her family and home were her main interests plus her much loved trips to the camp at Keego, Picnic Lake in White River, the island at Lake of the Woods and family gatherings at Trout Lake. Her memory will be deeply cherished by her daughter Katherine Macey (Ron) of Thunder Bay, her sons Carl Anderson (Marilyn) of Winnipeg, Ed Anderson (Joyce) of White River and her special nieces Margaret Pederson (Eiler) and Elizabeth Thomson (Charlie) both of Thunder Bay. Grandma (Nanny) will continue to live in the hearts of her 8 grandchildren Erik, Signe, Kristan, Dale, Mark and Tara, her 6 great-grandchildren and her numerous nieces and nephews. According to Ann’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Morris Jacob Cades (Moe)

Born March 22nd, 1935
passed away in the evening of Thursday March 29th, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Hospital at the age of 66. He was born icon in Cochrane, Ontario and moved to Port Arthur shortly afterwards. He grew up on Pearl Street where he spent the majority of his time honing his baseball skills and raiding gardens. He attended St. Andrews School, P.A.C.I and later graduated from instrument mechanics from Foxboro, Mass. During his adult life he was employed as an instrument mechanic at Provincial Papers for about 40 years. During that time he displayed his admiration for sport. His favorite teams being Brooklyn Dodgers, Montreal Canadians, Green Bay Packers and Boston Celtics. His skills for retention were used on numerous occasions regarding players, dates, games and statistics for which he continued to test himself, friends and family. Outside of work and during his retirement his idle time was spent with his family, helping to build, design, erect, and demolish all kinds of household renovations at his own home, sister Anne’s, daughter Lori’s and son Chad’s. Other times were spent celebrating life, be it going to Minneapolis to enjoy a ball game, taking family out to eat, coming to family dinners, going to the casino with his sister, and most importantly spending time supporting or providing for his grandchildren in their sporting and schooling endeavors. Predeceased by his mother and father Katarina and Jacob and brother Wilfred Turgeon. Survived by sister Anne Turgeon, daughter Lori Kruger (Mark), son Chad (Charmaine), their mother Donalda (Addie), nephews Wayde (Bonnie, Jason, Catherine, David), Glenn (Sherry), grandchildren Cash, Chase, Madison and Mckenna. As per his wishes cremation has taken place, a celebration of his life will be at Everest Funeral Chapel Tuesday April 03rd, 2001 at 2:00 pm Visitation at 1:00 pm. If people so desire in lieu of flowers a donation to Children’s Wish Foundation would be appreciated.

LIDA KOWALENKO

It great sadness the family announces that Lida Kowalenko, age 76 years, passed away in hospital on Thursday, March 29, 2001. Lida was predeceased by her son Michael and husband John. She is survived by her daughter Vera (Fred) and grandsons Stuart, Steven and John (Jennifer), and great-granddaughter Amber. In respect of Lida’s wishes, cremation has taken place & interment services will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at 12 noon at Riverside Cemetery with Rev. Randy Boyd officiating. Laudadio, Vincent
April 02, 2001

On Sunday morning April 01, Vincent Laudadio age 61, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Rogliano, Cosenza, Italy on April 5, 1939, Vincent came to Canada in 1951. He completed his education here in Thunder Bay, culminating with a diploma from Confederation College. Vincent was well known in Thunder Bay as the owner of Mr. Vincent’s Hair Styling for Men where he specialized in hair replacement. His main interest was his family and the many wonderful years spent at their summer cottage at Loon lake. Other interests included music (he played for 35 years with the Vic Arnone Combo, and sang in the Italian Choir at St. Anthony’s), photography and world travel. Vince was a life member of the Italian Cultural Centre and the Thunder Bay Barber’s Association, as well as a founding member of the White Fox Inn. Vince is survived by his loving wife Harriet, his daughter Lisa in Thunder Bay, Dyan (Steve) Jacobson in Rochester, Minnesota, son Carl in Antigonish, Nova Scotia; two brothers Joe (Joan) in Thunder Bay and Anthony (Angelina) in Toronto, in addition to brother-in-law Glen Nymark in Vancouver, three nephews Ron (Lana), Cary and Jason in Toronto, niece Joanne Laudadio in Thunder Bay, and numerous other relatives. Vince was predeceased by his parents Carlo and Maria. Funeral services for the late Mr. Vince Laudadio will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2001 leaving the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma, at 8:50 AM to St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church for Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM celebrated by Fr. Lino Santi. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be on Tuesday after 6:00 PM in the EVEREST CHAPEL, with prayers being offered at 7:00 PM.
At Vincent’s request memorial donations for friends who desire can be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses, or the Northern Cancer Research Foundation.

Hopkins, Allen George
April 02, 2001
Mr. Allen George Hopkins, age 51 years, a resident of 424 Marion Street, passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospice on Sunday, April 1, 2001 with his family by his side.
Born in Fort William he attended Westmount Jr. High and Northwood High Schools. In his younger years, Allen was a small motors mechanic with Mars Marine, Stationary Engineer with the Board of Education, and in 1974 was employed in the automotive industry - eventually owning Topline Suzuki and later Tryem Auto Sales until ill health forced him to close in the fall of last year. He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge - Connaught and Hill City Kinsmen. He enjoyed fishing, camping and his motor home - especially with his family. Allen will be long remembered for his great sense of humour.
He is survived by his wife Sharon; four sons: Trevor (Tracy) of Thunder Bay, Jamie (Tammy) of Winnipeg MB, Jason (Pirjo) and Bill, all of Thunder Bay; two daughters: Rhonda (Serge) Turbide of Beardmore, Sherri of Thunder Bay; two grandchildren: Cole Turbide and Maya Hopkins; parents Melvin and Lois Hopkins of Thunder Bay; three sisters; Linda (Russ) Waldon, Penny (Glen) Hurley, Wendy (Al) Zelleweger; brother Donald “Hooper” (Lorraine), all of Thunder Bay. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his grandparents: Allen and Dorothy Hopkins, George and Ethel Corbett.
Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 4th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany.
Interment will take place in the Family Plot, Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in Allen’s memory to St. Joseph’s Hospice or to the Canadian Cancer Society.

FISKAR

Mrs. Frances Fiskar, age 84 years formerly of 33 Walkover St., died at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, McKellar site, at 05:15 am Monday, April 2, 2001, after a brief illness. Born in Port Arthur on 01 August 1916 to Anna and Emilio Campigotto, she attended St. Joseph’s School. During WWII she was one of the “Rosie the Rivetters” at the Canada Car aircraft plant. She had also worked at the Hodder Avenue Hotel, Prince Arthur Hotel and at Chapples Store. She was married in 1958 to the former William Fiskar, who predeceased her in 1976. She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony's an Corpus Christi parishes. She was predeceased by her parents, by a sister Fortunata Tommasini in Italy, and a sister Edith Sonego and brothers Arthur and Orlando Campigotto of Thunder Bay. She is survived by a sister-in-law Assunta Campigotto of Thunder Bay, nephews Gelindo and Luigi Tommasini of Niagara Falls, several nephews and nieces of the Campigotto families in Thunder Bay, Beamsville, London, Vancouver, Pennsylvania and other areas, nieces Barbara Seeley of Newmarket and Mary Ann Boulter of Thunder Bay. Also surviving is a step-daughter Sandra Groccia of Thunder Bay and a step-son David Fiskar of Vancouver. Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Frances Fiskar will be held at Corpus Christi R.C. Church on Thursday, April 5, with family and friends gathering at the Church at 11:00 am for Funeral Mass celebrated by Rev. P.M. Stilla. Interment of ashes to follow in the family plot at St. Andrew's Cemetery. Prayers will be offered at 7:00 pm Wednesday, April 4 at EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL with visitation for friends after 6 pm Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, donations to Corpus Christi Church or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

SMITH

Mr. George Henry Smith of Vickers Heights passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the age of 81 years at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, McKellar site after a brief illness. George or “Harry” as he was fondly know to his friends and family, was born icon - Fort William to Isaac and Artiemace Smith. At the age of 12, the family moved from Selkirk Street to Vickers Heights, where he happily lived the rest of his life. Harry joined the Royal Canadian Army, 4th Field Ambulance Medical Corp on his nineteenth birthday and proudly served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Mediterranean during World War II. After the war, he met and married Natalie Ruby Marak. They made their home on North Victor Street in Vickers Heights and raised three children: George, Douglas and Dorothy. Harry worked as a Grain Inspector for the Board of Grain Commission for 31 years until his retirement in 1981. Harry’s happiest times were spent with his family, in his garden, going for a drive in his car and taking care of his beloved cat “Pissou”. He was predeceased by his patents and his brothers Lorne and Russell and his wife Natalie (in July 1999). He is survived by sons George (Delores) of Fall River, Nova Scotia; Doug (Sheila) of O'Connor Township, Thunder Bay and daughter Dorothy (Randy) Germain) of Oliver Paipoonge, Thunder Bay. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kristin (Mike) and Andrew Smith of Nova Scotia and Stephanie and Daniel Germain of Thunder Bay. As per Harry’s wishes, cremation has taken place with interment at a private family ceremony at Mountain View Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The family will meet and share happy memories on Thursday, April 5, 2001 from 7 to 9 pm at the Vicker's Heights Community Centre, hosted by the Vickers Heights Women’s Institute. If friends so desire, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or any local charity of their choice will be appreciated by the family.

SYMONIK

Peter James Symonik, C.D., passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 31st, 2001 in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. Jim was born icon in Fort William, Ontario on the 24th of February, 1938. He attended the former Central School in Fort William and completed his high school at Fort William Collegiate. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a diploma in Education from Lakehead University. He taught elementary school from 1970 to 1974 at Ogden, McKellar Park and Isabella schools. In 1975 be began a 27-year- long career at CBC Radio in Thunder Bay as a reporter and eventually senior news editor. He was a member of the Sea Cadets and 66 Air Cadet Squadron. This led to a lengthy career in the Canadian Forces Reserves where he attained the rank of Major. For many years he was the public affairs officer for the Thunder Bay Militia District Headquarters. For his service, he received the Canadian Forces Decoration. As well, to honour his contribution to the military, in 1990 he was invested into the Order of Saint John by the Governor-General in Ottawa. Over the course of his duties as an information officer he toured armed forces bases across Canada and in Europe. His love for radio began as a disk jockey in 1958 at CKPR Radio and as a host of a country and western show, he went by the name of “Peter James”. It was during these early days when he met the love of his life, Carole. She sang and he swooned. They were married on July 20th, 1963. Jim became a well-known personality in the city’s early radio days working at CKPR, CFPA and CJLX. He returned to radio when the CBC opened a radio station in Thunder Bay in 1975. He became part of the original news room and was a mainstay of the news service. He was a ham radio enthusiast and a member of the local club. He was a gifted photographer who won many local awards and was a proud member of the Canadian Media Guild as well as the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 and the Canadian Officers Association. He was predeceased by his parents Mary (1971) and Paul (1975) Symonik and his brother Bob (September, 2000). His memory will be cherished by his wife of 37 years, Carole (Golphy) daughters Susan (Halifax), Sandra (Toronto) and Sharon (Toronto), sister Barbara Miller of Winnipeg and cousins in Thunder Bay and Saskatoon and nieces and nephews in London and Winnipeg. A visitation will be held for friends on Wednesday evening at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue between 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Funeral services for Jim Symonik will be held on Thursday, April 5th, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home with Reverend Barry Wheaton officiating. Interment at Mountain View Cemetery.

DECK, LARRY WILLIAM

Larry William Deck passed away at the age of 52 in Victoria Hospital with his wife at his side on Saturday, March 24, 2001 following a brief illness. During his illness, members of his immediate family traveled to Victoria to be at his side. Larry was born icon and raised in Thunder Bay before moving to Nanaimo, British Columbia in 1992. As a teen, Larry was proud to have served as Drum Major in the Admiral Craddock Sea Cadet Corp band. Larry also served in the Naval Reserve and was briefly stationed in South America. Larry was employed by Great Lakes Forest Products for many years before becoming self-employed operating a cleaning service and acting as a property manager. Larry is survived by his wife Gloria, his children Larry William Jr. and Adrienne (Tim) Spivak and two grandchildren, Ashley and Travis Spivak who will miss their Papa. Larry is also survived by his parents, William and Christine Deck, two sisters, Lenore (Jim) Northcliffe and Brenda (Mike) Stirrett. Larry is also survived by stepchildren Rene and Holly Longpre (Aaron) and her son, Austin, and mother-in-law Gladys Rissanen as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Larry was predeceased by his younger brother Benjamin and his special friend and cousin Richard Roberts. Larry touched many lives in Nanaimo through his volunteer efforts with CVI Crisis Centre. He was a working board member of the Nanaimo B.C. Schizophrenia Society and he advocated for the rights of people with mental illnesses. Larry co-founded H.A.R.T., an organization that helped girls living on the street. Larry was a talented artist, drawing at every opportunity. Immediate family attended funeral services in Nanaimo on Friday, March 30th. Larry has been cremated and will be interred with his brother. Private family interment will follow at a later date. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Larry’s life at the Oliver Road Recreation Centre (lower hall) from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 8th. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Diabetic Association would be appreciated.

LAWSON

Margaret (Margie) Lawson passed away peacefully in Bethami Nursing Home on Monday, April 2, 2001. Born in Fort William on February 2, 1910, Margie worked at Matthew’s Drygoods Store before marrying Russell Lawson. She and Russ spent their retirement years wintering in Texas and at their “ranch” with family and friends during the summer. Margie is predeceased by her parents, William and Margaret Johnston, her sisters Helen Hedge and Elizabeth Marshall, and her brothers Thomas and Cullum. She is survived by her sisters Hazel Eaton (Don) and Colleen Valiquette (George) and her sister-in-law, Audrey Johnston and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday April 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Heritage Chapel. Private internment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Bethami Nursing Home would be appreciated. Margs family wish to thank the dedicated people of Bethami who cared for Marg during her thirteen year stay - we always felt she was given special attention.

BELLE

Mr. Violanti "Jack" Belle, age 87, a resident of Jasper Place, passed away peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital-Port Arthur Site on Tuesday, April 2, 2001. Jack was born icon in Italy and came to Fort William as an infant. As a youngster out of high school, he worked with his father in the construction field. During the war Jack started work at Can-Car (now Bombardier) and over the years was involved in the construction of airplanes, buses, rail cars, logging equipment, trailers and subway cars, retiring in 1972. Prior to moving to Jasper Place, Jack lived for many years on Oliver Road where he raised his family. He later spent his winters with May in Florida and his summers at Grandview Beach. Jack is survived by sons Robert (Arlene), John (Mary), Richard (Carol), Donald (Lori), Sudbury, and daughter Susan (Gary) Gall of Surrey, B.C., grandchildren: Lynda (Mike) Kaban, Gary (Tammy) Belle, Diane (Bill) Savor, Philip (Jackie) Belle, Karen (Bruce) Irving, David (Christy) Belle and Jason Belle and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are step-son Leonard (Carol) Elsey, step-grandchildren: David (Lorraine) Elsey, Dan (Sharon) Elsey, Michael (Tammy) Elsey, Joan (Marty) Gruben, Nola (Mike) Nigro, Bob (Cathy) Lazinski, Karl (Rose) Lazinski, Len (Cindy) Lazinski and numerous step great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Helen on December 20, 1974, a child in infancy, his second wife Minnie May on March 26, 2001, his parents Nicholas and Teresa, brothers John and Tony, sisters Amelia, Jessie and Lillie, granddaughter Lisa Belle, step-daughter Helen Kirby and step grandson Steven Elsey. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 5th at 10:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Scott Gale officiating. Inurnment of cremains to follow in St. Andrew's Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Alzheimer's Society or Pioneer Ridge Home For the Aged would be appreciated.

WINSLOW

Lempi Winslow passed away suddenly at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital – McKellar Site on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2001 at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Winslow was born icon in South Gillies on February 26th, 1920. She was raised and educated in the area and lived at her Oliver Road residence for 52 years. Lempi was a member of the Rural 60 Plus, lifelong member of the McIntyre Women’s Institute and Pinegrove United Church. She enjoyed her time spent with her two grandchildren. Her memory will be cherished by her children, Sharon (Jack) Carlson of Owen Sound (enroute), Fran Winslow of Thunder Bay, John (Wendy) of Thunder Bay, 2 great grandchildren Nancy Carlson of Sudbury (enroute) and Evan of Thunder Bay, sister, Impi Maki of Thunder Bay and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Frank (1991) and 8 siblings. Funeral Services for Mrs. Winslow will be held in Pinegrove United Church on Friday, April 6th, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Jack White officiating. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 S. LOVE

Doris I. Love (Durham) of Thunder Bay died suddenly, April 2, 2001 at her residence. She was born icon in West Fort William and spent her life in the Thunder Bay area until her death. She had worked at the Provincial Paper Mill until her marriage to Gilbert Love in 1939. She was a member of the 55+ and enjoyed doing Tai Chi and working in her garden. Survivors are daughter Barbara McKee (Bruce), a son Gregory Love (Linda), five grandsons and one great grandson. She was predeceased in death by her husband Gilbert Love and two sisters and one brother. Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, corner of Arundel and Leslie Avenue, Current River on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Ed Swayze officiating. Kirchen, Monica
April 03, 2001

Monica Kirchen passed away, with her family at her side, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Friday, March 30th, 2001 at the age of 54 years. Monica cherished the time spent with her family. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts, cooking and baking. She was highly active in the parent’s committee of 66 RCACS and volunteers and spent much time gardening. Monica was very proud of receiving her high school diploma, with honours, in 1998. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 31 years, Richard, her children, Richard (Tammy), Norma (Phil), Heather (Charles) Kerber, Ryan and Curtis, grandchildren, Michelle, Craig, Cadance, brothers, Donald (Mary) enroute, sister, Betty-Anne (Fred) Woods and Deloris Heck. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Irene and Michael Berzney. Monica was a friend and confidant to all who knew her. A memorial funeral service for Mrs. Monica Kirchen will be held at the Chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 4th, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Laura Greame officiating.
