Mr. George Kostreba Sr., of Versa Care Centre and formerly of 953 Huron Avenue, passed away on April 1, 2001 at the age of 96 years in the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, McKellar site, after a brief illness. George immigrated to Canada in the 1930’s from the Ukraine and settled in Thunder Bay where he lived until his passing. He was employed with the City of Thunder Bay Transit Department until his retirement. George’s main interests were his home and family and he immensely enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren. He always looked forward to the summer months, planting and tending his garden. Predeceased by his wife Dora in 1964, George is survived by his son George Jr. (Dorothy); granddaughter Cheryl (Butch) and two grandsons: Joseph (Tammy), and Brian (Linda); 3 great gradchildren: Jordan Wolkowski and Kaitlyn and Joshua Kostreba.
A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning, April 3rd, in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Randy Boyd of Trinity United Church officiating. Interment will follow beside his wife in Riverside Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.

Vaillant, Alec
April 03, 2001
Mr. Alec Vaillant, age 76 years, a resident of 3250 Oliver Road, passed away unexpectedly in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - McKellar on Saturday, March 31, 2001.
Born in Baird, Ontario, he was a lifetime resident. Alec served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. For many years he owned and operated a beef farm and “Alec Vaillant Landscaping and Back Filling”. He was employed as a foreman for Mayotte Construction for thirty-five years, retiring in 1982. He also enjoyed fur trapping and especially caring for his garden.
Alec is survived by Geraldine, his wife of fifty-three years; two daughters: Denise Vaillant of Thunder Bay and Brenda (Brian) Eamer of Durham, ON; two sons: Bryan (Brenda-Lee) of Ajax, ON and Mark (Norma) of Murillo; thirteen grandchildren: Jenifer Wright, Jeff Wilson, Jacquelynne Skinkeldam, Allan and Justin Boyds, Becky, Melanie and Isaac Eamer, Nolan and Mitchel Vaillant, Cody, Nathan and Erin Vaillant; five great grandchildren; seven sisters: Ada (George) Lemay, Doris (Richard) Hill, Helen (Tom) Hogan, Agnes Teskey, Patricia (Roger) Yurick, Evelyn Glen, all of Thunder Bay, Lorraine (Sam) Sweeny of California; five brothers: Reggie (Nan), Lorne (Eleanor), Leonard (Marilyn), Clifford (Wendy) all of Thunder Bay, Orval (Eunice) of California. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Alec was predeceased by his parents Dona and Adele.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 5th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, Townline Road, celebrated by Rev. Henryk Augustynowicz. Interment will follow in the Family Plot, Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, April 3rd from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. Prayers will be offered on Wednesday, April 4th at 7:00 p.m. in St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in Alec’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to the Canadian Diabetes. Association.

Halford, Francis
April 03, 2001

Mr. Francis (Frank) Thomas Richard Halford Sr. in his ninetieth year, passed away in St. Joseph's Care Group on Monday, April 2, 2001. He had been employed as a machinist for more than 40 years at the Port Arthur Shipyards, retiring in 1971. He is survived by his daughter Carole Anne Halstead (Don), son Frank (Jackie), six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was predeceased by his wife Marguerite and son Donald. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 4th at 1:30 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Gwen Ament officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be for 1 hour prior to service time. As expressions of sympathy memorials to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

JONES, Jeffrey, D.C., QME

passed away in his 33rd year on March 24, 2001 in Santa Rosa, CA. Beloved son of Lloyd and Helen Jones of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada who were with him when he passed away; adored brother of Cameron Jones and his wife Susan of Dryden, Ontario, Canada and friend of Annick Custeau. He was a graduate of Westgate High School where he was recognized as an Ontario Scholar. In 1991, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree at Lakehead University, with 1st Class Standing. He received the Dean of Arts and Science Medal, the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal and the Biology Dept. Prize. In November of 1994, he graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic graduating 2nd in his class. He received the Scholastic All-American Collegiate Award and was on the Dean’s Honor Roll each year. At the time of his death, he was working as a Chiropractor at the Synergy Medical Group in Santa Rosa. Sports were always an important part of his life. He played baseball and soccer but his first love was ice hockey. He was a goalie, playing at various levels of competition but mainly on traveling AAA teams. He traveled extensively in the U.S. H.L. In Santa Rosa he coached Youth Ice Hockey and Youth Roller Blade Hockey, whose teams won a number of championships. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley United Church, 130 North Brodie St., Thunder Bay with Rev. Jennifer Uhryniw officiating. Private inurnment. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 920 Tungsten St., Thunder Bay, Ontario P7B 5Z6 or the Northwestern Health Services University, 2501 West 84th St., Bloomington, Mn., 55431-154 or a charity of your choice.

SOLOMON

Mr. George (Sluggo) Ernest Solomon, age 47 years, a resident of Fort William First Nation, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Monday, April 2, 2001. George was born icon and raised at Fort William First Nation. He completed his education in Thunder Bay. George worked most of his life as a laborer and roofer. George’s main interest in life were his children and grandchildren. George touched the lives of the children who were a part of his life, his children, nieces and nephews. George enjoyed just being at home and visiting with friends and family. George is survived by very special friend Rita Paalosari, children Cherie, Jody, Michael, George Jr., and Tom. Grandchildren Jessica, Nicholas, Cheyenne, Brianne, Dylan, Wynter, Garrett, mother Dorothy Comstock, brothers Roger, Philip, Morris (Karen), Bill (Giselle), sisters Dixie (Leo), Rochelle (Allan), Lorraine, Arlene (Paul), Susan (Peter), numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. George was predeceased by his father George Solomon Sr., and stepfather Ed Comstock, brother Tom Solomon, uncles Frank, Harvey and Lyle Charlie Sr., Frank, Austin, Gordon, Ralph and Philip Solomon, aunts Marie and Natalie Solomon. Funeral services will be held on, Friday, April 6, 2001 in the St. Anne's Mission Church at 10:00 a.m. when family and friends will gather for Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Rev. Larry Kroker S.J. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Prayers will be offered on Thursday April 5, 2001 at 8:00 p.m., in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends desire, memorials to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
A tree will be planted in memory of George Solomon in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 23, 2002.

NEILL

Gwen Neill, age 85 years, resident of Versa Care and formerly of 60 Gordon Ave., passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 3rd, 2001. Gwen was born icon in the Thunder Bay area, and she graduated from the Salvation Army Bible College in 1940. She was an Officer in the Salvation Army until her marriage to Wilbert (Bert) Neill in 1948. She was predeceased by her parents and husband. Gwen is survived by her daughter Nancy and husband Bill McLean, her grandson Will McLean, her sister Vira Gates of California, and her niece and nephews in the United State. A memorial service will be held at the Travelodge Hotel Airlane Friday, April 6th at 2:30 pm in the Tiberio “A” room with Capt. Rick Pollard officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army, or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Pelto, Florentine

Mrs.Elsa Florentine Pelto of Murillo, passed away peacefully with family by her side in hospital on Wednesday, April 4, 2001. Born November 7, 1901 to Kaarl and Frederica Blomfeldt in Helsinki, Finland, she came with her parents to Canada in 1903, settling in Nolalu. Elsa married Walter Henrik Pelto in 1919 and they made their home in Nolalu where their daughter Violet was born. They moved to Marks Township and Milja Aileen was born icon in 1941. They moved to Murillo in 1968. Elsa’s interests were family, gardening and knitting and her trips to town on the Thursday bus. A member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Survived by daughter Milja MacFayden of Murillo; grandchildren Aileen Belanger of Thunder Bay, Lisa Potter (Phil) and Keith MacFayden of Murillo; great-grandson Benjamin Belanger of Thunder Bay. Predeceased by her husband Walter in 1972, daughter Violet in 1943, sisters Aino who died at one day old, Signe Dolk of New York, Hilda Hongisto of Hillsport, Ont., brother Kaarl of Thunder Bay, nepher Gordon Blomfeldt and niece Thelma Klos. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Elsa Florentine Pelto will be held on Friday, April 6, 2001 at 11:00 AM in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1770 Oliver Road with Pastor Nephtaly Dorzilme officiating. Removal will be made from the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma to the Church one hour prior to service time. Interment will be in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be on Thursday evening from 7:00 PM in the EVEREST CHAPEL. Donations to the Seventh-Day Adventist Disaster Relief Agency would be appreciated.

SAVELA

After 63 years of love, family, friends and a lifetime of cherished memories Barbara Savela’s family wishes to announce her peaceful passing on Sunday, April 29th. Barb was born icon on September 14, 1937 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. As a child she moved to Thunder Bay. Here she met, fell in love with and married her sweetheart Doug Savela. Together they raised and shared their lives with five children and eleven grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by Brad (Lynne) Amanda & Geordie - Thunder Bay, Karen (Bob Hedley) Erika & Trevor - Brandon, MB, Dawna (Brad Chase) Carly, Cassy & Hannah - Thunder Bay, Andy (Doreen) Robert, Travis & Mackenzie - Thunder Bay, Kristi (Rob Tella) & Emily - Kenora. She is survived by seven siblings. Barb was an active and faithful member of the Thunder Bay Free Methodist Church where she will be truly missed by her church family and close friends. Thanks so much to all for your prayers, concern and support. Barb will always be remembered as a truly caring and special person who graciously responded to the needs of others. She spent her time enjoying her family, special friends and took pleasure in camping, traveling and being with people. A special thanks to Drs. Fulford, Perales and Tsianou and to all of her nurses for your compassionate care. A very special thanks to the VON and the home care team. A sincere thank you to the staff at The Sisters of St. Joseph Hospice Care Unit. A celebration of Barb’s life will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, 1:00 p.m. at the Thunder Bay Free Methodist Church, 920 Sprague Street with Pastor Andre Korstanje officiating. SOBKOWICH

Mr. Stanley John Sobkowich, 69 years, of Dorion, Ontario passed away Friday, May 4, 2001 at the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, Nipigon, Ontario. Stan worked at the Dorion Fish Hatchery for 30 years before he retired. He loved gardening, enjoyed woodworking and photography and loved animals and wildlife. Predeceased by his parents - Marie and John Sobkowich and by his son Robert; he is survived by his son Ed (& wife Barbara) of Murillo, Ontario, by three grandchildren - James, Shannon and Christopher, by one sister Lois Grocholski of Winnipeg, Manitoba, by five brothers - Ed (& wife Eileen) Sobokowich of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Louis (& wife Susan) of Pearl, Ontario, Jim of North Bay, Ontario, Reg (& wife Wynemia) of Thunder Bay, Ontario and Elmer (& wife Helen) of Dorion, Ontario. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Resting at the Elliott Funeral Home Ltd., Nipigon where friends may call from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M. on Monday, May 7, 2001 and at the Dorion Community Centre (School) from 10 A.M. until 11 A.M. on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at 11 A.M. at the Dorion Community Centre with the Rev. D. Gilroy of Grace United Church officiating. Interment will be in Dorion Mountainside Cemetery. Friends so wishing may make donations to the Diabetes. Association or to the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital.

ILIJOW

Mr. Stanley Ilijow, 64 years, of Nipigon, Ontario passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 8, 2001 in Saginaw, Michigan. Stan worked for Norampac in Red Rock before he retired. He was a member of the B.P.O. of Elks, Lodge #337, Nipigon and a member of the Church of Annunciation, Nipigon where he often served alter or read. Stan was a Chicago Blackhawks fan and enjoyed watching his grandson Troy play hockey. He was instrumental in setting up a committee to return minor hockey to Nipigon. Stan was President of the Nip-Rock Rangers for many years. Predeceased by his parents - Annie and Walter Ilijow; he is survived by his wife Marline of Nipigon, by one daughter Gloria (& husband Blair) Tennant of Nipigon, by one son Daniel (& wife Louise) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, by four grandchildren - Tara and Troy Ilijow and Michael and Marlo Tennant, and by his beloved pet Peaches. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2001 at 11 A.M. at the Church of the Annunciation, Nipigon with Father W. Chochrek officiating. Interment of cremains will be at a later date in Cliffside Cemetery, Nipigon. Friends so wishing may make donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. Arrangements are in the care of Elliott Funeral Home Ltd., Nipigon.

HENRY LEON

Henry Leon passed away on May 10, 2001 at the age of 83. Henry attended Hillcrest High School and served as Leading Seaman in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to Port Arthur. He married Margaret Berglund and built a home on College St. Over the years, as family needs changed, he built two subsequent homes on Masters Street, a summer camp on Shebandowan Lake, a subsequent summer camp on Reta Lake and finally a retirement home at Sturgeon Bay. For most of his working career he was employed as a carpenter and/or construction contractor, with the exception of a 15 year stint as a construction supervisor with the Dept. of Indian Affairs. Henry loved gardening, reading, woodworking, cooking and fishing. He was rarely idle, and was always working on an interesting project such as growing mushrooms in the basement or making apply champagne. He had an especially soft spot when it came to the care and feeding of the then family pet, be it a cat or dog. His family will remember him for the way that he quietly gave of his time and expertise in support of projects for family and community members. They are surrounded by the furniture and other things that be built for them and the tools that he left behind. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Wilma Leon, his brother Albert and his sister Rose Leon. He is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughters, Jeanne Killens of Thunder Bay and Linda Leon (Alison) of Calgary, his sons, Brian (Linda) of Winnipeg and John (Irene and Matthew) of Thunder Bay, his sister Mary Tocheri of Thunder Bay, his brother George (Betty) Leon of North Burnaby, B.C., his grandchildren, Genevieve Killens, Margot Killens, Rebecca Killens and Blair Leon and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service, with Pastor Daniel Repo officiating, will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Thunder Bay at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to either the Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or The Parkinson Society of Canada.

Gale, Franklin

Mr. Franklin Gale, father of Nicole, Kala and Kelly Gale lost his life to a boating accident on May 20, 2001. Frank will be missed by many family and friends. His dedication to fatherhood will always be in the loving memories of his precious daughters. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 29th at 11:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Canon John E. Jordan officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be for one hour prior to service time.

Barrett, Ralph

Mr. Ralph Edward Barrett, age 79 years, a resident of 166 Matthews Street, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Port Arthur General on Thursday, May 24, 2001 following a brief illness. Born in Port Arthur he was a former resident of South Gillies and had lived in Thunder Bay for the past 60 years. Ralph was a member of Branch #5 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Rural 60 Plus, Canadian Snowbird Association, Quarter Century Club and he was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He worked with the CN Railroad, Oscar Styffe Ltd., and the L.P.H. for thirty years until his retirement in 1982. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Audrey, sons Edward of Marathon and Dale of Sarnia, brothers Cyril (Alice) and Everett (Sylvia), sisters: Doris O'Conner (Jim), Jean Sitch (Ray), Leta Cherwonick (Pete), Irene Fox (Eric), Vera VanRiper (Jack), Thelma Felbel (Leonard), Hazel Kaus (Herbert), Winnie Byington (John Russel) and Sharon Holowach (Harry); grandsons Richard and Jeff,granddaughter Summerlee, daughter-in-law Debbie and brother-in-law Kurt Stajkowski as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Esther Stajowski. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 29th at 1:30 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Millie Wauhkonen of Agape Christian Assembly presiding. The members of Branch #5 of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold their service of tribute in conjunction with the service. Private family interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation for friends will be held on Monday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Chapel. As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Branch #5 Legion Building Fund would be appreciated.

Kirstuik, Irene
May 28, 2001

Kirstuik, Irene passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, McKellar Site after a brief illness on Thursday, May 24th, 2001 at the age of 77 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her family; William (Anne) Kirstuik of Yorkton, Sask., Percy Kirstuik of Edmonton, Cecillia Denesyk of Theodore, Sask., Kathleen (Fred) Procyshen of Thunder Bay and Betty (George) Karpuik of Thunder Bay and several nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by her parents, 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Funeral services for Irene Kirstuik will be held in Yorkton, Saskatchewan pending completion.

MAUNU

With our deepest sorrow we announce that our precious daughter Krista Anne Maunu passed away peacefully in McKellar Hospital on the afternoon of May 29/01. She brought great love and happiness to all she met in her short life. She will be greatly missed by her dad Wayne Maunu and mom Donna Bates, her big sister Alina Bates, and predeceased by her sister Hayley Lauren Maunu, her grandparents Allan and Raili Maunu, Don and Yvonne Bates, her uncles Donnie Bates, Rey Erickson, Jon Ogden, her aunts Charlotte Bates, Tanya Erickson, Teena Maunu, also great-grandmother Helmi Ranni, and great-grandparents Unto and Ivy Maunu. Also survived by numerous other relatives. Funeral services fro the late Krista Anne Maunu will be held on June 4, 2001 at 2:00 PM in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverly Street at Algoma, with Rev. M. Diegel officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be on Sunday evening from 6:00 PM in the EVEREST CHAPEL.
