Helmer Wilfred. Born December 5, 1916 in Port Arthur, Ontario, passed away peacefully October 20, 2001 in Chilliwack General Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Survived by Mary his loving wife of 63 years, daughter Gail (Tim) Hutchison, sons Ken (Audrey) and Peter (Kym), 5 granchildren and 1 great grandchild. A past master of Dunbar Lodge, Vancouver, member of Mount Zion Lodge, Chilliwack and life member of the Gizeh Shrine Temple. No service by request. Cremation. In memory of Helmer donations may be made to Gizeh Transportation Fund for Children.

MARGARET JEAN KYDD (nee Hoard)

October 9, 2001
Margaret was born icon November 9, 1947 in Fort William. She made her home in Winnipeg about twenty years ago. She is survived by brother Ronald Hoard, sister Beverly Lamoureux. Four children Joey, Angie, Mike and Kevin and their spouses. By Kelly and five grandchildren. Her good friend June Craig. Many other relatives. Cremation has taken place. As Margaret requested there will be no service.

Netemegesic, Theresa

Sept. 29, 1934 - Oct. 24, 2001

Mrs. Theresa Netemegesic, age 67 years, passed away in St. Joseph's Care Group on Wednesday, October 24, 2001. Born in Gull Bay she lived there her entire life until her illness forced her move to Thunder Bay. Theresa's family was her main interest. She enjoyed the outdoors, her games and travelling. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Nick, daughters: Cecilia (Steve), Victoria (Albert), Kathleen (Melvin), Martina (Wayne), Loretta (Al) and Ramona (Corey), sisters: Madeline King and Edna Wigwas, brother Peter Wigwas, brother-in-law Phillip Netemegesic, aunt Susan King, 35 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives in Winnipeg, Regina, Thunder Bay, Armstrong and Gull Bay. She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Martina Wigwas, daughters Beatrice and Florina, son Geno Paul and sons Roger and Nicholas in infancy, sisters Lena Kwissisens and Marie Sasiens and aunts Isabel Pitchigabow and Alice Belmore. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 27th when family and friends will gather in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Gull Bay, for Requiem Mass beginning at 3:00 p.m. celebrated by Rev. Larry Kroker S.J.. Interment in Gull Bay Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held on Thursday (this evening) from 7-9 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with the Prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Canadian Diabetes. Association would be appreciated.

Santarossa, Carolina
December 11, 2001

Mrs. Carolina Santarossa age 81 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died in TBRH McKellar, on Monday December 10, 2001. Born in Pasiano Italy, She emigrated to Canada settling in Fort William marrying Adelino Santarossa who predeceased her in June of 1986. Carolina had worked at Buset’s Grocery Store prior to retiring. She loved to work around the house especially in her garden. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Venet Society and St. Casimir’s Church. Carolina is survived by sister-in-law Lise Piccinin, Shawinigan Quebec. Nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive here and in Quebec. Besides her husband Carolina was predeceased by her parents and brothers Vilmo and Marcello. Funeral services will be held on Friday December 14, 2001 when friends and family will gather for Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. in St. Casimir’s Church celebrated by Rev. George Zebrowski ofm. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Prayers will be offered on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends desire memorials to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
A tree will be planted in memory of Carolina Santarossa in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 23, 2002.

Bailey, Richard
December 10, 2001

Mr. Richard Albert "Ab" Bailey, age 72 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died in TBRH McKellar, on Saturday, December 8, 2001. Ab was born icon and raised in Port Hope. He came to Fort William in 1947. He married Dolores McMaster in Fort William in March of 1949. Ab worked at Bowater retiring in 1993 from the Woodlands Division. In his younger years he was a member with the Sea Cadets. Ab loved golf and played regularly at Municipal Golf Course with his golf partners Dino and Bob. Ab always enjoyed hockey and especially watching local hockey. He also loved to watch his grandchildren participate in their sports. Ab is survived by his wife Dolores "Dolly", his children Glenn (Joan), Paul (Becky) and Janet, all of Thunder Bay, grandchildren Lauren, Michael, Karyn, Tessa, Paul Jr. and Ann-Marie and sister-in-law Jean (Jack) Goodfellow of Winnipeg. Nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. He was predeceased by his parents Absolam and Grace Bailey and two brothers Reginald and Robert. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place and friends may visit with the family on Wednesday December 12, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel. A private family interment service will follow later in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials to a charity of choice would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Mr. Ab Bailey in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 23, 2002.

Kingston, Deborah
December 10, 2001

A friend to everyone and a trusting, giving soul, Ms. Deborah Lee Kingston passed away peacefully in hospital on Sunday December 9, 2001 at the age of 46. Debby will be sadly and lovingly missed by her family and friends; her son Joshua Lucier of Thunder Bay, her mother Beth Kingston of Red Rock, her siblings Donald (Sylvia Nordstrom) of Thunder Bay, Heather (Jean-Guy) Lagrange of Kaministiqua, Mary (Ron) Pickering of Zephyr, Ontario, Victoria (Adrian) Murphy of Toronto, David (Bonnie) Kingston, of Nipigon, Richard (Shari) Kingston of Red Rock, and Cindy (Eugene Lapointe) Kingston of Keewatin. Many nieces, nephews, and close friends on Heron Street and area also survive. Debby was predeceased by her father Clifford (Gus) Kingston in 1988 and her nephew Mathew Lagrange in 1994. Cremation has taken place and a private family Memorial service will take place in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma, at a later date. The interment of the ashes will take place at a later time in the Nipigon Cemetery. If friends so desire donations made to the Red Rock United Church or the Christian Community Centre at 132 Dease Street would be gratefully appreciated. A donation in honour of Ms. Deborah Kingston has been made to the Christian Community Centre by Everest of Thunder Bay.

Thomas “Leroy” Koskitalo

Aug. 11, 1943 – Dec. 7, 2001
Leroy Koskitalo passed away suddenly in hospital on Friday, December 7, 2001. He was born icon August 11, 1943 in Thunder Bay and grew up here. After attending Queen’s University, Leroy worked for many years on Civil Engineering projects throughout the Kingston area of Ontario. In 1995 he returned to Thunder Bay and became our family’s “Happy Handyman” and left for us many examples of his fine and enduring handiwork. His kind and gentle nature endeared him to us all. Leroy will be dearly missed by all who came in contact with him for his willingness to help others. He is survived by his mother Helen, his brothers Leslie (Lavonne) of Vancouver, Lloyd, Lorne (Lenore), his sister Lorraine of Thunder Bay, his brother Leonard of Toronto and his sister Lois of Dryden. Leroy is also survived by his nephews Daniel (Lisa) and Wayne, his nieces Lynn, Jill, Tiera, Danielle, Lindsay and Michelle. Also survived by his Aunts Elsie Koskitalo and Evelyn Kieri. Leroy was predeceased by his father Olavi in 1972 and his uncles Osmo Koskitalo and Bill Kieri. Cremation has taken place and at Lorne’s request there will no funeral service. A private family interment will take place at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery.

Sister M. St. Romuald (Marguerite Joyce)

Sister M. St. Romuald (Marguerite Joyce) died peacefully following a lengthy illness, Sunday evening, December 09, 2001, in the Infirmary of St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay, Ontario. Born in St. Andrew’s West, Ontario, Sister St. Romuald entered The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peterborough in 1927 and became a founding member of The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste Marie in 1936. An educator, Sister St. Romuald, ministered mainly in Thunder Bay, Ontario as both teacher and principal and later as a Librarian and Library Consultant with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board. As well, she spent brief periods teaching in Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay. Following retirement Sister St. Romuald remained in Thunder Bay and served as Sacristan at Avila Centre. She moved home to St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay in 1977 where she assisted in the school library of St. Joseph’s College as well as in the Motherhouse Library. She later taught catechism classes in Thunder Bay for several summers. Sister remained active despite her failing health. She loved to reminisce about her early years. Her family was always very important to her and she always enjoyed their visits. Sister St. Romuald was predeceased by her parents William and Mary Catherine Joyce as well as seven brothers; Emmett, John, Gerald, Bernard, Romuald, Benedict and Sylvester; and four sisters; Nora, Veronica, Ola and Rose Marie. Sister is survived by three sisters, Clotilda Morris, Ursula Joyce and Pauline Joyce as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Sister St. Romuald’s body will be received in the Holy Family Chapel, St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2001. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel, on Thursday, December 13, 2001. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Bay.

Doyon, Lucien Joseph Henri
December 11, 2001

Mr. Lucien Joseph Henri Doyon, age 71 years, a resident of Banning Street, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - General following a brief illness, on Friday, December 7, 2001 with family at his side. Lucien was born icon in Frampton, Dorchester, Quebec. A bush worker by trade, he was employed by Domtar in Beardmore and Great Lakes in the Thunder Bay District, taking an early retirement due to a back injury. Lucien’s main interests were his home and family.
He is survived by his two daughters: Rachelle Doyon and Sherry (Pat) MacDonald of Thunder Bay; two grandchildren: Patrick and Stevie; two brothers: Gerald of Thunder Bay, Mion of Montreal (here); two sisters: Irene Rousseau of Montreal, Simone Doyon of Dorchester, Quebec. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and other reliatvies. Lucien was predeceased by his parents; two brothers: Leonard and Robert.
Private Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, December 11th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Deacon Charles Johnston of Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic Church. Interment took place in St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends were held on Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Harbourview Funeral Centre. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Lucien’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Vase (Pessotti), Norma A.
December 11, 2001

Norma A. Vase, 78, of Black River Falls, died Monday morning, December 10, 2001 in Black River Memorial Hospital. The former Norma A. Pessotti was born icon on October 19, 1923 in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario, Canada to Annibale and Catherine (Brescacin) Pessotti. She was raised in Thunder Bay and married Gordon Vase on August 30, 1958 in Thunder Bay. The couple first lived in Atikokan, Ontario, Canada until moving to Black River Falls in 1974. Prior to her marriage, Norma was employed at the Times Journal and Canada Car, both in Thunder Bay. Norma loved to babysit for her grandchildren. She also was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loved baseball. Survivors include her husband, Gordon, a daughter, Roberta “Robbie” (David) Lamps, of Woodbury, MN; a son, Darren (Mary) Vase, of Black River Falls; 3 grandchildren, Dominic and Dawson Vase, and Zoe Lamps; a sister, Elda Pessotti, of Thunder Bay; and 2 brothers, Leonard and Rino Pessotti, both of Thunder Bay and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls. The Rev. Fr. Mark Walljasper will officiate. Family and friends may call at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 P.M. and at the church on Thursday from 9:30 A.M. until services. There will be a public prayer service at 8 P.M. Wednesday in the funeral home conducted by Deacon Ed Schaper.

Powell, Geraldine Ruth

August 9, 1928 – December 11, 2001
Geraldine Ruth Powell, aged 73 years, resident of Kakabeka Falls passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital peacefully on Tuesday morning December 11, 2001 after a brief illness. Geraldine was employed by CNR starting as a messenger girl at the age of 16 and continued to work for 40 years in various departments, retiring in 1984. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Survived by daughter Leslie Mahon (Bill), son Ross Powell, Eric Hopkins, Bear, grandchildren Lindsay, Fraser, Keira. She is predeceased by husband Richard and mother Molly Bingham. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the local humane society would be appreciated by the family.

Murray, Margaret
December 11, 2001

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Murray, age 82 years of Mount Forest Boulevard passed away peacefully on Monday, December 10, 2001 with her family by her side. Born and raised in Fort William, Margaret was married in 1940 to Walter Bithrey, who predeceased her in 1949. As a young widow, she worked at Kresge’s for 11 years to support her children. In 1963, she married Archibald Murray, who predeceased her in February 2000. Margaret’s interests centered around home and family-knitting, sewing, and especially tavelling and RV’ing with Archie. Her six grandchildren were her special pride and joy. Margaret will be remembered by: her children Brenda (Tom) Wright, Reg (Susan) Bithrey and Alice (Patrick) Gleeson; cherished grandchildren Craig and Kathryn Wright, Colin (Leslie) Cook-Bithrey and Trevor Bithrey, Sara Gleeson (husband George Rusnak) and Murray Gleeson; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law: Jean Ross, Rhoda McLaughlin, Violet Laakso and Evelyn Saunders. Margaret is predeceased by her sisters Vera Beck, Rita Mintenko, Evelyn Fratpietro and Viola Flint; brothers Wilbert and Harold Saunders. Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Murray will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. in the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James with Rev. David Sparks officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. in the chapel. If friends so desire, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
A donation has been made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in honour of Mrs. Margaret Murray by Everest of Thunder Bay.

James Bernard, on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at the Strathmere Lodge Home for the Aged, Strathroy. James Bernard Sullivan formerly of St. Catharines in his 85th year. Beloved husband of the late Alice Sullivan (1991). Dear father of John Sullivan & wife Wendy of Mount Brydges & Patricia Lang & her husband Robert of Thunder Bay. Grandfather of Colleen & Ian Sullivan & Alyson Lang. Will be missed by his brother Richard Sullivan of Tennessee, sisters Margaret McAnuff of St. Catharines, Josie Griffith of Vancouver & Betty & husband Bill Walsh of Toronto. Predeceased by sisters Violet Ozerkevich and Della McGill and brother Alfred Sullivan. Family will receive friends at the Patrick J. Darte Funeral Chapel, 39 Court Street, St. Catharine 905-685-6584 on Friday from 7-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Julia Church, St. Catharines, on Saturday, December 15, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. Cremation to follow. Sakiyama, Su
January 28, 2002

Mrs. Su (Sachiko) Sakiyama of Thunder Bay went to be with the Lord she loved, on Friday, January 25th, 2002. Su was born icon in Vancouver, B.C., later moving to Winnipeg where she met and married Min Sakiyama.
Together they moved to Fort William in the early 1950’s.
Su was predeceased by her parents, step mother and a son, Gregory, in infancy. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 50 years, Minoru, daughter Cindy, son, Gordon, son Steven (Cathy) and her precious grandchildren, Adam and Claire. She is also survived by sister Kiyo Yamada (Winnipeg), brothers Nagy (Fumi) Nishihara (Princeton, B.C.) and Jimmy (June) Nishihara (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Su was very active in her church, Westmount Gospel Chapel, devoting herself to serving, ministering to the needs of others, teaching Sunday School, and participating in the Ladies’ Bible Study. Prior to her illness she was an active member of the Fort William Country Club, and the 55 Plus Club of the Lakehead Japanese Cultural Association, especially enjoying the Karaoke group. She loved her sports - especially baseball. She was a great fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. Su supported all her children and grandchildren’s’ activities and was so proud of their achievements.
All who knew Su, loved her. We will never forget her sparkling eyes, her laughter, her love and generosity. Although her family and home were important to her, Su believed that her blessings were meant to be shared. She was generous of heart and was a Christian example to all who knew her.
A celebration of Su’s life will be held on Monday, January 28th, 2002 at First Baptist Church, 308 Red River Road at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Knight officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westmount Gospel Chapel or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the staff on 6th South McKellar Site for their compassionate care. We would also like to thank Su’s physicians for their kind professionalism: Drs. Malik, Davis, Fiddler, Weeks, Gamble, Biman, Gehman and their Residents.
