Richard Harris

RICHARD JAMES HARRIS Suddenly, at his residence, on Sunday, July 29, 2001, Richard Harris passed away at the age of 66 years. He is survived by his children, Wayne (Gertie), Blaine, Darryl, Dawn Flett (Ivan), Donna Kirby (Wallace), and Brian; and their mother, Hilda Harris. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, one great-grandson, and numerous brothers, sisters, relatives and friends. Richard enjoyed his many years of driving for Crescent Fruit and Duffy's Taxi. He was particularly fond of his children and grandchildren. His friends will miss him at the various coffee shops he frequented. Those who loved Richard are welcome to attend a celebration of his life to be held at the Kateri Tekawitha Aboriginal Catholic Parish, 794 Ellice Ave. on Thursday, August 2 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a wake service. Funeral services will be held at the same church, the next day, Friday, August 3 at 10:00 a.m. Interment of Richard's cremated remains will take place in Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave., following the service. Sam Hasiuk

SAM HASIUK It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our precious father, Gigi and great-Gigi, Sam Hasiuk, with his devoted son-in-law Dan by his side, Sam went to his eternal rest on Saturday, July 28, 2001. Sam was born icon in selo Sokola, povit Mostyska, W. Ukraine on August 24, 1903, son of Ivan Hasiuk and Pelegia Kureletz. At the age of 26, Sam left his family and his beloved Ukraine with the hope of bettering his life. He arrived in Canada in April 1930. It was in Winnipeg that he met and married Mary Hasiuk (Kozowy). Together, they shared 55 years of happy marriage. Sam held many jobs during his life. He was a very hard worker who believed that physical labour would keep you alive and healthy. He was an employee with the City of Winnipeg Transit until his retirement at the age of 66. Sam was a very religious person whose faith sustained him throughout life's challenges. He was thankful to God for each new day and felt very blessed by the long life God had granted him. Sam was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church and St. Joseph's Seniors Club where for many years, he served as President and Treasurer. Sam enjoyed the simple pleasures of life being with family, singing, gardening, and building. Sam was predeceased by his beloved wife May in 1991; his dear daughter Stephanie on June 25, 2001; brothers, Stefan, Mychailo, Mykola; and sister Maria. Sam's memory will forever be cherished by his sons, Jerry and daughter-in-law Evelyn, Ted and daughter-in-law Jan; son-in-law Dan Mitchler; grandchildren, Carol (John) DiGregorio of Palm Harbour, FL, Greg (Sandra), Mary-Ann and Patricia Mitchler, Laura and Lisa Hasiuk; great-granddaughters, Amanda and Angela DiGregorio of Palm Harbour, FL; cousins, Ivan, Kateryna, Stefan, and Olha of Ukraine. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 1 at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. Divine liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 2, also at the Church with Very Rev. J. Sianchuk, C.Ss.R. officiating. Interment to follow in Holy Family Cemetery. We will all miss Sam's wisdom, advice, strength, sense of humour, and zest for life. William Hlatkey

WILLIAM (BILL) HLATKEY Peacefully, on July 29, 2001, Bill Hlatkey, age 76 years, went to his eternal rest. Bill was predeceased by his parents; two brothers Nick and Mike and his sister Jean. He is survived by his daughters, Valerie (Tom), and Joanne; grandchildren, Tammy (Brent), and Sandy (Ray); two great-grandsons, Cole and Jack; brothers, Steve, John (Florence), and Peter; sister Anne and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his special friends Darlene, Nick, and Helen of Tyndall, MB. Bill was born icon in Stead, MB. He came to Winnipeg at an early age and worked at various jobs and eventually worked in construction until he retired. Bill was a kind and generous person and had a good sense of humour. He enjoyed playing cribbage with friends and family and enjoyed life to the fullest. Special thank you to Dr. Zeiler and to the other doctors that were involved and a very special thank you to the nurses and staff for all their compassionate care and kindness to Bill. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with viewing one hour prior to the service. Rev. Deacon Nick Kohuch will be officiating. JEANNETTE NANCY JOHNSON Jeannette Nancy Johnson, born icon October 23, 1930 in Winnipeg, MB and passed away peacefully July 29, 2001 at Langley Memorial Hospital, Langley, BC. Jean was a wife, mother and grannie who loved to go on outings and to spend time with her family. Jean will be reunited with her husband Thomas Jackson, first daughter Patricia Rose Renfrey and fourth son Glen Charles who predeceased her. Jean will be held in the hearts and memories of her children and their spouses, Dianne (Don), Nancy, David (Rena), Edward (Holly), Gary (Gwen) and Wayne (Angela); eight grandchildren, Jeanette (Jesey), Kimberley, Cody, Coby, Haley, Patricia, Charles, Philip (Hilary); and six great-grandchildren, Dakota, Dallas, Eric, Autumn, Jesse, and Noah. We love and miss you. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 2 at Henderson's Funeral Home, 20786 Fraser Hwy., Langley, BC. Interment at Surrey Centre Cemetery. EMANUELA (MARY) KELM Peacefully, on Sunday, July 29, 2001, Mary Kelm passed away in Calgary, AB with her daughter Adele by her side. She was born icon February 18, 1906 in Poland. She immigrated to Canada in 1927 and married Edmund Kelm January 25, 1930. She supported her husband in all of his business adventures. She was dedicated to her family and lived to make a secure, and happy life for her children. She enjoyed gardening and was known for her green thumb. Mary's other hobbies included knitting and sewing. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her husband Edmund; her son-in-law Hudson Lytle; her daughter-in-law Lorraine Kelm; her brothers, Edmund and Reinhart and her sisters, Olga, Lydia and Aurelia. She is survived by her son Arthur and his wife Mary; her daughters, Adele Lytle, and Eleanor and her husband Barry Presunka; grandchildren, Bradley and Garry Kelm. Diana Meister, Linda and Greg Lytle, Lorraine Rohs and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly Ave. with viewing one- half hour before the Service. Pastor Paul Gehrs will officiate. DAVID J. KITZAN Suddenly on Friday, July 27, 2001, David J. Kitzan passed away. David is survived by his children, Melissa (Randy), Charissa, Michael (Jennifer); five grandchildren, Alyssa, Cory, Cierra, Kianna and Leah; and best friend Ollie. Cremation has taken place. Stanley Klasz

STANLEY KLASZ On Sunday, July 29, 2001, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, Stanley, aged 73 years, passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Stanley will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Maryann (nee Pulak); children, Sonny Klasz (Maryanne), Janice Moeckel (Paul), Janet Toews, Michael Klasz (Angie); grandchildren, Stanley, Carrie, David, Janelle, Lauren, Alex, and Marissa. Stanley also leaves to mourn his sisters, Rose (Joe), Janet of Toronto; his brother Fred (Jean); sister-in-law Jean; his father-in-law Arthur Pulak; his sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Pulak of Toronto, Florence Pulak of Brandon; brother-in-law Joe Pulak (Mickey) of Thunder Bay; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Stanley was predeceased by his mother Eugenea and his father Peter; sisters, Frances Smith, Olga Serafin; brother Joe; mother-in-law Annie Pulak and brother-in-law Art Pulak. Stanley was born icon April 30, 1928, in Winnipeg. He was employed at Burns Ltd., for 40 years. He retired in May of 1993. After his retirement Stanley worked on his hobby farm in East Selkirk, which brought him great enjoyment. Stanley was a quiet and private person, but those close to him enjoyed his sense of humour, and his great storytelling. He was a devoted, and giving husband, father and grandfather. Prayers will be said on Friday, August 3, at 7:00 p.m., at Knysh Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main St. Divine liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, August 4, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Andrews Ukrainian Catholic Church, 160 Euclid Ave., at Maple Street. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. The family would like to express its heartfelt thanks, to the Cancer Care staff, at the Health Sciences Centre and The Palliative Care staff on the eighth floor at the St. Boniface General Hospital for their care and compassion. Gordon Macmillan

GORDON WILLIS MacMILLAN It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband and father, Gordon MacMillan on Sunday, July 29, 2001, at the age of 58 years. He was born icon on November 26, 1942 in Stonewall, grew up and attended school in Meadow Lea. On August 3, 1968 he married Irene Robertson, and they resided in Winnipeg until 1976 when they moved to Stony Mountain. At a young age, he worked at Federated Co-op in Winnipeg for two years, was employed at Christie Biscuits for 11 years, and for the past 23 years at Liquid Air Canada. He was an avid sportsman and very competitive in the sports he played, which included hockey for the Meadow Lea Hockey Team and baseball in Winnipeg. Gordon also enjoyed curling and attended many bonspiels, encouraging his two girls to participate in curling and baseball and attended many of their events. Gordon enjoyed his annual hunting trip with "the boys" to Dropmore, MB, and hunting in Meadow Lea with his dad, brothers, and nephews. He was a member of the Meadow Lea Gun Club, and the Winnipeg Gun Club, and was very proud of his trophy collection. Gordon very much enjoyed the outdoors, and over the years spent many weekends camping and fishing with his family. One of his greatest pleasures was dancing and having a good time with family and friends. Surviving besides his wife Irene, two daughters, Lori Irene (Darren) Thiessen and Lisa Mae (Shawn Slatcher); three brothers, Harvey (Eva), Bruce (Audrey), Angus (Joan; six sisters, Julia King, Caroline King, Edith (Ron) McFee, Evelyn Hiebert, Audrey (Art) McFee, Gwen (Eldon) Sargent; mother-in-law Violet Robertson; sister-in-law Ann (Jim) Denorer; sister-in-law Joan (Ted) Jenkins; brother-in-law Allan (Marlaine) Robertson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Elsie; father William; father-in-law John; brothers-in-law, Bill King, Donald King, and John Hiebert. Friends may call for viewing from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1 in the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall. William Markwart

WILLIAM (BILL) MARKWART passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 28, 2001 at the age of 71 years. He was predeceased by his mother Elizabeth in May 2001, daughter Louann, his father August, his brother George and his sister Irene. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marguerite, of 45 years, one son Laird (Charmaine) and granddaughter Denica, sisters, Shirley, Edith, and Leona; brothers, Lloyd, Ronald, and Leonard; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill was employed with Hertz Rent-A-Car for 47 years. He loved camping, country music, showing quarter horses and keeping the grounds at home and work well groomed. Bill recently moved into his dream house and was looking forward to landscaping the yard. Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Bill's wishes, no service will be held. Neil Mcleod

NEIL STEWART MCLEOD Following a brief illness, Neil Stewart McLeod peacefully passed away, with his son by his side on Monday, July 30, 2001 at the Grace General Hospital. Left to cherish his memory: his son Darwin (Jamie); grandchildren, Lindsay, Matthew; sisters, Eileen McLeod of Winnipeg, Vina ( Wilbur) Henderson of Morden; and numerous nieces and nephews. Neil was predeceased by his wife June; parents, William and Mary Elizabeth; brothers, Allister and Norman. Neil was born icon September 10, 1925 in Balmoral, MB. As a young man he moved to BC, where he found work in the mining sector. It was there he met June. Neil became active in the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Inc. Union, holding various positions including staff representative. He later worked for the U.S.W.A. in Vancouver, Calgary and until his retirement in Winnipeg. Neil and June were active in which ever community they resided. They could often be seen and heard at baseball games or political events, in support of the working person. He enjoyed hunting, but his first joy was golf. His golf buddies believe his ever present pipe, which he placed on the ground in front of his ball, to be a directional beacon. He was always in the fairway. A service of remembrance will take place on Friday, August 3, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley Street, with Reverend Don McIntyre officiating. Wilfred Mowat

WILFRED NORRIS MOWAT On Sunday, July 29, 2001 at his residence, Wilfred Mowat, aged 87 years of Oak Hammock, MB. Wilfred is survived by his sister Hazel (Norman) and their children, Ralph (Kathy) and family, Daniel (Diane) and family and Susan and family. He was predeceased by his parents, five brothers and three sisters. Wilfred served overseas in the Second World War as a Gunner. He was posted in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe. After returning to civil life on demobilization, Wilfred worked as a fisherman on Lake Winnipeg until the 1980's. He immensely enjoyed living in the quietness of the country with his pets, affectionately known as Dog and Cat. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Selkirk Ambulance Department, and the Selkirk Fire Department. A special thank you to Steve and Gwen who have been so wonderful to Wilfred over the years. Funeral service for Wilfred will be held on Thursday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m., in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk with viewing to be held one half hour prior to services.
