Marion Russell

MARION RUSSELL (nee BOOTH) On Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Oakview Personal Care Home, Marion Hazel Russell, most precious and dearly loved wife of John S. Russell. Born on June 7, 1924, in Winnipeg, the only daughter of Charles Henry Booth and Violet Mildred (Whitley) Booth, Mrs. Russell was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg. She was educated at Riverbend School for Girls (now Balmoral Hall), the University of Manitoba (Bachelor of Arts), and the University of Toronto (Bachelor of Library Science). Prior to her marriage she was a Reference Librarian at the University of Manitoba and later at St. James-Assiniboia Public Library. Mrs. Russell was active for a number of years at the University Women's Club and was a devoted member of St. John's Cathedral (Anglican) for 25 years serving on the Chancel Guild, in the Anglican Church Women, on many committees and as a regular reader at the Services of the Church. Of recent years, until prevented by ill health, she attended St. Luke's Parish. Marion will be remembered by all who knew her for her elegance, gracious manner and kindly ways, but especially for her service to others unstintingly given. Ever patient under difficulties, she waged her long struggle with Alzheimer's disease to the end with courage and fortitude never losing the pleasant smile she had for everyone. She is survived by her loving and sorrowing husband Jack; and by her brother Glenn (Phyllis) of Edmonton; sisters-in-law, Mrs. John R. Morton (Dolores) of Winnipeg, and Mrs. G. Harold Sharp (Mary) of Montreal; brothers-in-law, Ronald (Carol) and Gerald (Mary Ann) Russell of Winnipeg; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; and by many close and dear friends who were so supportive and helpful throughout her illness. Thanks is also expressed to the staff of the second floor of Oakview Place who were always so kind and caring of Marion. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, November 20 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Luke's Anglican Church, 130 Nassau St. N., with the Rev. Robert Brownlie officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. Sheila Shaw

SHEILA SHAW Peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre, Sheila passed away at the age of 74. Predeceased by her husband, Clifton (1984), Sheila will be sadly missed by her sister Claire Hutchinson; her children, Mike (Theresa) Shaw of Scottsdale, AZ; Deb (Ron) Jantzen of Abbotsford, BC; Robert (Chris Krawchenko) Shaw; and Clifton Bruce (Miriam Unruh) Shaw of Winnipeg; and by the grandchildren she adored, Erin, David, Zoe, Douglas, Mike (Miranda), Andrew, Benjamin and Liam; and remembered by many nephews, nieces and friends. Sheila was smart, gracious, classy and always had great style. She was a voracious reader, loved a good crossword and had a wicked wit. She liked to travel, to garden and spent many good times at the family cottage at Royal Lake. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Sheila's life will be held at the Winnipeg Squash Club, 275 Stradbrook, on Friday, November 22, 2002, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Many thanks to Dr. Norma Klassen, Dr. Unruh and the staff at Riverview. Beverly Singbeil

BEVERLY GRACE SINGBEIL 1934 - 2002 Beverly Grace Singbeil passed away suddenly at her home in Calgary, AB on Thursday, November 14, 2002 at the age of 68 years. Bev was born icon and raised in Winnipeg, MB where she met and married the love of her life Donald Singbeil in 1953. After moving to Calgary with her family in 1968, she took Journalism at SAIT, fulfilling her dream of becoming a writer, photographer and editor of various papers and magazines. She later became the Social Co-ordinator at the Nifty-Fifties Club. Bev always took tremendous pride in the family that she built, loved and cared for them unselfishly. She will be dearly missed by all those that had the grace to know her. Bev is survived by her two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce and Karen, and Kenneth; grandchildren, Jessica, Hunter, Cole, and Shane; brother Sivert Jonsson; and her beloved poodle, Soot. Beverly was predeceased by her husband Don; sisters, Bernice and Doreen; and her brother Sonny. Cela Sopiwnyk

CELA SOPIWNYK Quietly and peace-fully on Saturday morning, November 16, 2002 at the Vita Hospital the angels came and took Cela home to be with Jesus. Cela was born icon on February 22, 1933 at the McDonald homestead in St. Andrews, MB and was one of 10 children. Our precious Cela will be lovingly remembered and survived by her husband Nick of 45 years; three sisters, Mildred, Laura, Edna; numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, godchildren and countless friends. Cela was predeceased by her parents, four brothers, two sisters, three brother-in-laws and one niece. She was employed by Eatons in Winnipeg for many years, later giving up her job and supporting Nick with love, strength and encouragement in his journey through his career in Winnipeg, Cache Creek and Steep Rock and then retiring at Vita. Her passions were animals, nature, flowers, music, reading, Free Press Crosswords and CJOB. She was a people person and her warm friendly conversations and mannerism won her many friends wherever she went, thus creating endless flow of friends and acquaintances. Cela will forever be remembered as someone with a kind, compassionate and generous heart and always willing to help anyone in need. Cela's love of children is evident in her personal selection of active pallbearers which are her nieces and nephews; Donna Johnson, Elsie Picklyk, Gary Krivak, Keith Larter, John Sopiwnyk and Ken McDonald. JESSIE (JOSEPHA) STOROZUK Jessie (Josepha) Storozuk, went home to Jesus on November 17, 2002, at the Maples Personal Care Home at the age of 93 years, 7 months. She was born icon on April 5, 1909. Jessie and her predeceased husband Peter farmed at Shortdale until their retirement in 1966. They moved to Winnipeg shortly after. Surviving her are her children, Walter (Helen), Stan (friend Olga), Russ (Vera), Mary (Eric) Lahofer, Ethel (Jim) Krichkowski, Ollie (Edwin) Wiebe, and Elaine (Dave) Dromereski; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; brother Philip; and sister Sophie. She will join her family members, husband Peter, infant daughter Sophie, parents, Mykita and Elizabeth Ewasuik; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; brothers, Alex, Mike and Bill; sisters, Ann and Mary. The family would like to thank the staff of Maples Personal Care Home for their care and compassion for Mother over the past 20 years. A Celebration of her life (funeral service) will be held on Wednesday, November 20 at 10:00 a.m., with viewing between 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment will follow in Garry Memorial Park. MABEL TAYLOR Peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2002, Mabel Taylor passed away at Golden West Centennial Lodge at the age of 97 years. Mabel was predeceased by her husband Norval in 1991. Left to cherish her memory are son James and wife Marlene of Winnipeg and their children, Shauna (David Weise) and Gary of Vancouver; son Douglas and wife Audrey and their children, Kelly (Sherry), Tracy and Morgan of Sacramento, CA. ZOFIA WROBLEWSKI Zofia Wroblewski, aged 79 years, passed away in hospital on November 16, 2002. Zofia was born icon on February 19, 1923 in Poland. She immigrated to Winnipeg in 1950 with her husband and children. She is survived by her two sons, Fr. Jozef of Wainwright, AB and Ted (Susan) of Lorette, MB. Her husband Jozef predeceased her in February, 1998. Many thanks to Dr. S. Kowalski and staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their care and support. MORRIS ARTHUR ROY ZASTRE On Monday, November 18, 2002, at the Misericordia Hospital, Roy Zastre, beloved husband of Alice passed away at the age of 81 years. Besides his wife Alice of 56 years, Roy leaves to cherish his memory his son Erroll and wife Judith and their children, Matthew and Ruth. MARION MARGARET "PEGGY" BANNISTER (nee PRINGLE) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peggy Bannister of Brandon, MB on January 27, 2003. Peggy was born icon on July 29, 1911 in India, in the foothills of the Himalayas and successively moved to Egypt, Scotland and eventually Canada at the age of 12. In Canada, she first lived in Alberta and then her parents homesteaded in the Peeceville area of Saskatchewan. She was married there to Clifford Bannister and moved to Brandon. Peggy was very involved with family and loved her garden and plants, particularly her flowers. She is survived by her brother Norman Pringle of Winnipeg; son Ronald Bannister and his wife Dianna Marie of Winnipeg; grandson Mark James Bannister, his wife Trina and their children, Luke Thomassen and Gillian Stephanie of Winnipeg; granddaughter Donna Lynne Raynor, her husband Derek Ashley and their children, Dante Ashley Tahj and Dayah Dianna Donna of Winnipeg; as well as by many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Clifford; and brothers, Joe Pringle and Allan Pringle. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, at 1:00 p.m. at Brockie Donovan Funeral Chapel, 332 - 8th Street, Brandon. George Bird

GEORGE HENRY BIRD George Henry Bird passed away on Friday, January 24, 2003 at Seven Oaks Hospital, Winnipeg. George is survived by his much loved wife Ethel, his brother Jim Bird, his sister-in-law Evelyn Lindquist and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his sisters, Winnifred Bird, Constance Bernhard and Jean Duncan. George was born icon July 14, 1918 in Winnipeg and spent his early life in Elmwood. He served his country with distinction in World War 2. A member of the Third Division Corp Signals, he participated in the D-Day invasion for which he was awarded the military Medal. Following his return to Winnipeg George began his career in the transportation industry, ultimately working for many years with Kingsway Transport until retirement. He was a member of Acacia Lodge, AFAM, GRM; Scottish Rite of Freemasonary; and Khartum Shrine Temple. George was a lifelong supporter of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, an ardent sports fan and an avid golfer. He spent many enjoyable summers at Matlock where he and Ethel made and enjoyed many friends. Special thanks to Dr. Meyrowitz and the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 30 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance. ELIZABETH BULLEE Surrounded by family, Mom passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2003. Predeceased by her loving husband, Fred, in 1977, she is survived by her four children, Bill (Dorothy) Bullee of Saskatoon, SK, grandchildren, Erin and Jill; Jan (Gord) Wickware of Victoria, BC, grandson Randy (Sherrie), great-grandchildren, Tyler and Scott and granddaughter Carolyn (Stefan) Picucha; Barb (Ed) Labossiere of St. Adolphe, MB, grandchildren, Lisa (Richard) Iwabuchi, Paul, Kyra and Sara; Marilyn (Brian) Fraser of Winnipeg, MB grandchildren, Blair, Alison and Colin; and four sisters; Florence Douma-Bissett, Tienie Paulusma, Florrie Van Caeyzeele, and Ella Trick; and many nieces and nephews. Mom was born icon on January 8, 1914 in Balk, Holland and immigrated to Canada in 1929. She married Fred in 1937 and lived in St. Norbert where they operated a market garden until 1974. Mom was a warm and loving person who greatly enjoyed both family and friends. She died as she lived her life, with great dignity. Special gratitude is extended to Mom's caregivers at Golden Door Geriatric Centre who treated her with compassion and respect throughout the last nine years of her life. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, January 29, at 2:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St. with Rev. Russell Wardell officiating.
