SOPHIA KALICHAK Sophia Kalichak of Winnipeg, MB, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the Winnipeg, Victoria General Hospital at the age of 81. Sophia was born
on January 11, 1923, in Slater, MB to Julian and Anne Pawlicki. Sophia was united in marriage to Albert Kalichak in 1944 in Winnipeg. Together they farmed in Ashville, MB and raised three children, two daughters and one son. Her husband Albert and her parents predeceased her. After the passing of her husband, Sophia returned to Winnipeg to live out the remainder of her years with her daughter and son-in-law, where she was a member of Calvary Temple Church. Left to mourn her passing are her children, Beverley and husband Hector McDiarmid of Winnipeg, Sylvia and husband Roger Kolt of Portland, Oregon, son Gary and wife Debbie of Ashville, MB; grandchildren, Daryl Newis, Sholome Johnston, Crystall Klassen, Cassandra Kopatyko, Michael and Annaelia Prier. Funeral service will be held Saturday, July 3, 3:00 p.m. at Sneath Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin, MB. The family is very grateful for the prayers and support from the Pastoral staff of Calgary Temple. HELEN LUBY (nee ZIOLA) March 30, 1907 - June 29, 2004 Entered into God's protection, having lived a full life. Her hard work and stories of her homeland are valued by her remaining families. She was predeceased by husband John; daughter Jean and son-in-law Alphonse Korba. She touched the lives of many in the North End, both through her generosity from her bounteous garden and through her strength and exceptional work ethic. She learned a lot being the surviving eleventh child of Enufri and Florence Ziola. To celebrate her life, her immediate family includes daughters, Florence (Nes) Dudar, Julie (Don) Diakiw; grandchildren, Larry (Emery), Brian (Susan), Barry, Earl, Dale (Judy), Wayne (Cindy), Carolyn, Christine and great-grandchildren, Karly, Kyle, Tyler, Sarah, Brenden, Sean, Kirsten, Morgan, Rachelle, James and Jasmine. We thank all the staff at the Holy Family Home, St. Mary's Ward; Dr. Babick; and volunteers for their exceptional care and comfort. ROSE MANGIN (nee BOULET) July 7, 1907 - June 29, 2004 Our loving God has called His faithful servant Rose, to her eternal reward. Our lives were blessed by this special lady. Rose passed away at the Lorne Memorial Hospital in Swan Lake, MB on June 29, 2004 at the age of 97 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Madeleine Rheault, Arthur (Denise Beaulac), Irene Schaefer, Cecile Desrochers, Hubert (Colette Garand), Roland, Alice DeBaets (Herman) and Adrien (Patricia Vinet); 35 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Emerance Pelchat, Aurore Peloquin, Norbert, Emile, Felix and Rene Boulet and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert in 1954; son Norbert (2003); grandson Gerard Rheault (1983) and sons-in-law, Guy Desrochers (1986) and Arthur Rheault (1997), three sisters and two brothers. Widowed at an early age, her strength and passion for life were an inspiration to us all. Faced with the challenges of raising her family as a single parent, Rose persevered on. Her smile, quick wit and wonderful sense of humour were a reflection of her enthusiasm for life. Rose touched the lives of many people by her gentleness, her considerate and loving nature. The sparkle in her eyes, the glow behind her smile and the warm tone of her voice were contagious, as was her zest for life. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in the St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church, in Bruxelles, MB on Saturday, July 3 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing prior to service. Fr. CATHERINE T. MILLER On June 29, 2004 Kae passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospice. JASON PETER MUELLER Suddenly, on Monday, June 28, 2004, Jason Peter Mueller passed away at the age of 33 years. Our dear Jason will be cherished forever by his mother Lynn Isaryk (Bill); father Harry Mueller (Bobbie Marshall); sisters, Kimberley Mueller and Carrie Kulbisky (Gordon); nephew Ethan; grandmother Ursula Mueller; grandfather Norman Singleton; aunts, Gail Singleton and June Klassen (Terry); cousins, April, July and September; our extended family, Aaron, Amee, Terry, Michelle, David and Charlene; and his special lady Samantha Buffie. After graduating from Dakota Collegiate, Jason worked for several years at Dunn Rite Chicken, Motor Coach Industries and more recently graduated from Red River College with high marks and a bursary as a Developmental Care Worker. He worked with physically and mentally challenged young adults at Lifeworks, demonstrating the kindness that earmarked his life. A natural peacemaker, his Christmas parties were blessings that brought together people of all ages and walks of life. He was always willing to share his huge heart and kindness to all around him. Jason was a tremendous athlete, excelling in a number of sports, especially running, biking and hockey and like his paternal grandfather, he was a gifted handyman, his work always done with absolute perfection. Cards for special occasions were chosen or made with care and love. He leaves behind family, friends and fellow travellers from Alcoholics Anonymous who will miss him dearly. A Service celebrating the life of our dear one will be held on Saturday, July 3 at 3:00 p.m. in St. Alban's Anglican Church, 486 Rathgar Avenue at Osborne Street with Rev. Donna Ball officiating. SHIRLEY PETROFF 1936 - 2004 Peacefully on June 30, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Shirley Petroff passed away at the age of 68. She was predeceased by her husband Nick in 2001 and son Rick Jones in 1995. Shirley is survived by Bill (Deb) Jones; Jessica, Melissa and Aiden and their mother Sherry; Sheri (Darcy) Owen and their children, Anthony, James and Troy; mother Hazel Brackenreed. She will also be sadly missed by her extended family and friends. Shirley worked at MTS for many years and was also an Avon Lady. One of her favourite pastimes was watching baseball. Her grandchildren and her family were very important to her. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 5 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with a reception to follow. MARY ELLA SIDON (nee RUDOLPH) Peacefully following a brief illness, Mary Ella Sidon passed away June 27, 2004 at the Concordia Hospital with her family by her side at the age of 55 years. Left to cherish Mary Ella's memory are her children, Paul D. Sidon and Laura-Lee Sidon; grandchildren, Serenity, Paul and Valeria; siblings, Edward (Pat) of Courtenay, BC, Reuben (Barb) of Clairemont, AB, Bill (Peggy) of Portage La Prairie, MB, Frank (Lorna) of Winnipeg, MB, Kenneth (Debbie) of Winnipeg, MB and Anna (Ken) of Canmore, AB and sister-in-law, Marlene of Thompson, MB. She was predeceased by her husband Danny and parents, Amy and James and her brother Matthew. Mary was born
in Ochre River, MB on December 20, 1948 to Amy Smith, a war bride from England and James Rudolph, a P.O.W. and a veteran of Dieppe. She was the second eldest of eight siblings and a surrogate mother to the three youngest. In 1969 she married the love of her life and started a family. With her two children in school, Mary worked as a paraprofessional in education. Outside of work she volunteered as a leader for the Girl Guides of Canada. Mary's generosity was well known by family, friends and comrades at Archway Marketing Services. She was always willing to lend a hand or simply be a sympathetic ear. Dependable, Mary carried through with her commitments and was never late for work. With characteristic strength and courage she faced the hardest moment of her life. Surrounded by family and the friends whose lives she touched, she didn't suffer for very long and was quickly reunited with her loving husband. Sincere appreciation to Susan Demchuk, and Robert and Eva Brown and all her friends at work. Pallbearers will be Barb Ferreira, Susan Page, Rocky Low, Andrew Dalgleish, Frank Rudolph and Anna Rudolph. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Sts. DIANE ANDERSON On Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at 3:08 a.m., Diane Anderson (nee Gauthier) passed away at the Poseidon Personal Care Centre at the age of 79 years old. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 46 years, Norman Anderson of Winnipeg; daughters, Karen Anderson (Edwin Andreychuk) of Flin Flon, Judy Hilash (Dale/Chelsea Hilash) of Calgary; her son Kim Anderson (Thora/Garrett/Brayden Anderson) of Winnipeg; her brother Guy Gauthier of Cranbrook, BC; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom will miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her mother Marie Lucie Gauthier (nee Delisle), father Ismael Gauthier and brother Marcien Gauthier. Diane was born
in Pine Bluff, SK on February 27, 1925. Her family shortly thereafter moved to Thicket Portage and then to Sturgeon Landing, MB. It was there that she resided until she moved to The Pas, MB in 1939 to reside with the Nuns until 1946. She obtained her nurses training at the St. Boniface Sanatorium in Winnipeg (now St. Amante Centre) from 1946 to 1950 and attended St. Rose Manitoba Hospital from 1950 to 1953 for a postgraduate course in maternity. In 1954, she moved to Flin Flon, MB. In 1957, she married her husband of 46 years and moved to Creighton, SK until 1969 when they relocated to Flin Flon, all the while raising her children, while her husband (Norman Anderson) worked at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting for 42 1/2 years. She worked in the Flin Flon General Hospital from 1954 to 1971, when she was struck with cancer. After successfully combating the cancer she continued to be active in the community as well as the church, which she enjoyed and cherished immensely. She retired to Winnipeg with her husband in 1991, where she remained until she passed away. Diane was a deeply devoted wife and mother to her children. She had an incredible love of life and a great sense of humour. She spent much of her time in Winnipeg, enjoying her family and grandchildren and attended the High Steppers Club where she played numerous games of cards and bowled. She will be incredibly missed and lovingly remembered. A special thank you to all the nurses and staff on the 4th floor of the St. Boniface Hospital where she stayed from mid February until May 6, 2004. Also a special thank you to all of the nurses and staff at the Poseidon Personal Care Centre for their caring, love and compassion during her stay from May 6 until June 30, 2004. Memorial Service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on Monday, July 5, 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dean Andersen officiating. Interment to follow at a later date in Elm Creek Cemetery. When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in the gloom-filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long and not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we once shared, miss me, but let me go. MARGARET AUDET (nee DICKSON) On Wednesday, June 30, 2004, Margaret passed away at age 90. She was predeceased by two husbands, John Klassen and Anatole (Andy) Audet and sisters, Mary, Rose, Theresa and brothers, James, Matt, Ed, George, Joe and David. Survived by son John "Jack" Klassen (Donna); daughter Roseann Masyk (Fred); grandchildren, Brad, Lauri (Tim), Michael and Jamie and great-grandchildren, Logan and Jackson. L. DORIS BAKER, Ph.D. On June 30, 2004, Laura Doris Baker passed away quietly after a long struggle with Parkinson's. She was surrounded in love by her family at the Fort Garry Care Centre. Born in Winnipeg on January 2, 1920, Doris was predeceased by her parents Howard and Edith Baker and her brother and sister-in-law Roy Baker, QC and Patricia Baker. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Beverley and Bishop James Allan, seven nieces and nephews and four great nieces and nephews. Dr. Baker received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education at the University of Manitoba and went on to receive her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Toronto. Her thesis traced the historical development of special educational provisions for exceptional children in Winnipeg, and is still being used as reference material at the U. of Toronto. As a young educator Doris worked in Flin Flon and Carmen Manitoba. Doris was a long time member of All Saints Anglican Church, Winnipeg. She was also proud of her United Empire Loyalist heritage. During her professional career she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Chapter. Her hobbies included photography , especially beautiful close-ups of flowers in all their glorious colours. She also enjoyed Scottish Dancing. Yorkshire Terriers, of which she had several over the years, held a special place in her heart. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 6, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at the Thomson Funeral Chapel, Broadway and Sherbrook Ave. The Reverend Jim Draper will be officiating. March 31, 1924 in St. Boniface. She worked at a variety of jobs until she met and married her husband Maurice and then moved to Quebec City for over 20 years. She was predeceased by her husband Maurice, four brothers, five sisters and Mom and Dad. She leaves to mourn her two sisters, Mary Krupinski and Beatrice Kappy and numerous nieces and nephews. EDMOND ROY BELL It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on July 2, 2004 at Pinawa Hospital, with his family by his side. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife Rita; his children, Lynn, Bill (Brenda), Caroline (Ken), Elly (Don), Ed (Pam), and Gwyn (Art); stepchildren, Fiona (Don) and Mark; brother Frank (Dot); and sisters, Jeanine and Frances (Howard); 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Frank (1955) and mother Josephine (1954); brothers, Jules, Joe and Bill; granddaughter Rosemary; daughter-in-law Wendy; and son-in-law Real. Ed was born
in Winnipeg on January 15, 1924 and grew up in the St. James area. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery (R.C.A.) on February 26, 1941 and went overseas seven months later with the 32nd Light Anti-Aircraft Battery. He was with Air Defence in England until 1944. D-Day, June 6, 1944, he went to Normandy and in May 1945 he participated in the Liberation of Holland. He returned to Canada in September 1945. He rejoined the Canadian Army on January 31, 1947 and served with the R.C.A. until March 3, 1971. During this time he served a year in Korea and three years with NATO in Germany. After his discharge from the Army he worked for Shaw Dental Lab for twelve years and ACE Auto Electric for three years. Ed was a 58 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion and served over 30 years as an executive member at various levels. He was President of St. James Legion, Branch No. 4 and Lac du Bonnet Legion, Branch No. 164. He was District Commander for District No. 5. Ed was awarded a life membership and the Legion Meritorious Service Medal by the St. James Legion and the Palm Leaf to the Meritorious Service Medal by the Churchill Legion. The long-term effects of kidney disease, diabetes. and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) eventually took their terrible toll on him physically, but they never broke his spirit. We would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who helped to take care of him over the many years of his illness with a special thank you to Dr. Spence, Dr. Nel and all the heath care workers in Whitemouth. Thank you also to the staff of Pinawa Hospital for their compassionate care and kindness during the last four days of Ed's life. Mere words cannot express our gratitude to his dear friends, Janet and Al, who provided so much support and help during his lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6 at Sobering Funeral Chapel in Beausejour with Pastor Don Reimer officiating. Friends may view from 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, prior to the service. Service will terminate at the chapel with cremation to follow. Friends may park at the Super 8 Motel adjacent to the funeral home.
