MARGARET REDSTON

July 16, 2004

MARGARET REDSTON (FINLAY) 1934 - 2004 After a valiant battle with cancer, during which her weapon of choice was often sly humour, Margaret died Saturday, July 10, 2004, surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Marg's fighting spirit had a firm grip on life until the very end - always finding a way to communicate as we reminisced, read aloud and shared laughs. Marg is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband John; her daughters, Elizabeth (James Gamble), Nancy (Gordon Sumner) and Jennifer (Dan Davies) and her precious flock of grandchildren - Adam, Mallory, Allyson, Eric, David, Jonathan, Katie, Maggie and Olivia. She is survived by her siblings, Malcolm Finlay (Chichester, England) and Sheila Rogers (Kingston, ON). Margaret had the good fortune of marrying her best friend's little brother (and celebrating their recent 45th anniversary at a wonderfully large yet intimate party). John's siblings, Sheila Mahood (Kingston, ON), Peter Redston (Connecticut) and Marcia Barr (New Mexico) were Marg's beloved second family. Although always humble about her skills as an artist, Marg's watercolours and raku pottery warm the homes of her appreciative daughters. Marg's eye for colour and her love of nature took hold in a wonderful garden where her standard poodle, Kia, continues to rule all he surveys. Marg's compassionate spirit and her detail-oriented, systematic brain, served her well in a rewarding healthcare career. She graduated in nursing from Kingston General Hospital with first prize in anatomy and trained in public health at the University of Toronto. Marg worked in community health for a short time in New Brunswick before she and John put down roots in Winnipeg. After a hiatus to have children, Marg rejoined the workforce with the Victoria Order of Nurses and later served in Manitoba's Health Department until her retirement in 1997 as Acting Executive Director of the Long Term Care. Her long-term focus also extended to the many friendships she cultivated and valued so dearly throughout her life. She was a strong advocate of volunteerism and drew energy from the many committees she served on, her favourite focus and community being the Unitarian Church. Marg's family is eternally grateful to the extraordinary care and compassion of Dr. Roland Hayward. Margaret always looked forward to his daily 5:00 a.m. hospital visits (including Christmas Day). Thanks also to the Victoria General Hospital Oncology Unit and fourth floor nursing staff. A celebration of Margaret's life will take place Thursday, July 22 at the Unitarian Church, 603 Wellington Cres. at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Margaret requested donations be made to the Unitarian Church Building Fund, 603 Wellington Cres., Winnipeg, MB R3M 0A7 or the Victoria Hospital Capital Campaign, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 2E8. Condolences may be emailed to condolences@nbardal.mb.ca. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200

JOHN ANDERSON

July 17, 2004

JOHN RUSSELL ANDERSON John Russell Anderson of Princess Harbour, MB passed away accidentally July 3, 2004. He was born icon April 5, 1975. He attended the one room Dolly Magnusson School completing Grade IX in 1988. At an early age it soon became apparent that this young man was a "people person". With his wonderful smile and outgoing personality he made friends wherever he went. His favourite summer job was "loggin-in" the pleasure yachts which tied up at the dock every summer. He would keep a watch toward West Doghead and the moment he saw a yacht on the horizon he was on his way to the dock, log-book in hand. When he reached the age of ten he began attending the Native Ministries Summer Camp. He really enjoyed the experience and once he was too old to be a camper he became a counsellor. He enjoyed his work with the young campers. Once he entered the work force he would take a weeks holiday to attend the camp. After completing Grade IX at Princess Harbour he enrolled at St. John's Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg, graduating from Grade XII in 1991. John was not certain which career path he should follow. His love of airplanes led to the Winnipeg Flying Club where he obtained his private pilot's licence. With the lay-off of many experienced Air Canada pilots he decided that the job market for young pilots would be very limited. He headed north to Berens River where he worked with Georgina and Jack Clarkson at the North Country Lodge. While in Berens River he met Edward Kemps. During the winter he worked in the bush with Ed Kemps Loggers. Edward became John's "other brother" and a lifelong friend. He spent a summer on the MS Mukatawa working with Captain Mike Potoski hauling freight to Berens River and Poplar River. At the end of the open water season John decided to enroll in the Reimer's Driver Training Program to obtain his Class 1 licence. His first trucking experience was with Reimers. Later he drove for Harold Olafson's Trucking. Not quite sure this was his niche he joined Captain David Stephenson and Engineer Ron Spring as a deck hand on the MS Edgar Woods Ferry which sailed from Island View to Bloodvein and Princess Harbour. That winter he hired-on with Riverton Transport hauling freight. In the space of two weeks he managed to hit a moose and a deer. He did mention that he was more successful hunting with the truck than with his rifle. The mechanic wasn't too impressed! After a second season on the MS Edgar Woods he decided that commercial trucking really was what he wanted to do. He drove for TCT, Atlas Cold Storage and, at the time of his death was driving for Payne Transport working with Pandher Transport. His routes took him through Canada and the US. John had the unique ability of making an extended family wherever he went. He often referred to one of his dispatchers at Payne Transport "Mother Kathy with a touch of Roseanne on a bad day!". Then he would chuckle. His fellow truckers were his "buddies". He called home daily to let us know his whereabouts and his destination. If there were any problems or frustrations we heard about them as well. We'll miss his cheery "Hi-Ho! How's it going?" John was a very special person who gave his love and his time to the people he cared about. His family was very important to him. He always made a special effort to be there in the good times, the bad times, the glad times and the sad times. John never liked or used the word "good-bye" - just a hug and "See Ya"! So we won't say "good-bye" John. Just "See-Ya, Bud!" John is survived by his parents, Brenda and Ed; brother James of Vancouver, BC; many close relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Gwen and Frank Malyon of Glenboro and Cara and Olaf Anderson of Princess Harbour. Following cremation, a memorial service for John was held July 8 in the Riverton Recreation Centre. A donation in John's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes. Association, #102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6, or to a charity of choice. BARDAL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIUM 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474 Condolences: www.bardalfuneralhome.com

IRENE ANTYMIS

July 17, 2004

She will be lovingly remembered by her son Raymond Antymis and wife Linda, daughter Linda Paul and husband Harold, daughter Darlene Gordon and husband George of BC; her grandchildren, Cindy Fernandes and husband Alex, Darren Paul and Christine Brown, Russell Antymis and wife Kathy, Daria Nowell and husband Chris; her great grandchildren Danielle, Jessica, Nicholas, Sarah and Jennifer; and her sisters, Anne Hlady and Ella Hlady, sisters-in-law, Pearl Antymis, Alice Cronk and husband Eddy. The happiest days of her long life were the retired years spent with John at the cottage in Belair, the annual trips to BC to visit her daughter Darlene and husband George, and all the special moments spent with family and friends. Her family loved her Ukrainian cooking and she loved to share it. Irene was always a vibrant and energetic woman, who in her later years continued to enjoy gardening and a game of bingo, cards or carpet bowling with her many Lion's Place friends.
