MAURICE BELLERIVE

July 23, 2004

MAURICE "MOE" BELLERIVE It is with overwhelming sorrow that we announce the loss of our husband, father, and grandfather Maurice on July 20, 2004. His wife Clotilde and granddaughter Jacqueline were at his side, at the St. Boniface Hospital at the time of his passing. His memory will be cherished by his wife Clotilde of 54 years; his children, Roger (Amy), Lorraine (Tony) Compayre, Diane (Clifford Paddock) and special "daughter" Irene (Dan) Davie. He is survived by one sister Anita Sorobey and several nieces and nephews. Maurice was born icon on August 18, 1924 in Ste. Elizabeth, MB and later moved to St. Boniface. As a young man, Moe served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. His need for adventure led him to Churchill, MB in 1949 to work for the Foundation Company. In 1950 he married Clotilde Cloutier and returned to Churchill where they spent the first 35 years of their marriage. During his years in Churchill, Moe was an active community member, involved in many organizations including the Royal Canadian Legion, Churchill Curling Club, Lions Club and serving several terms as a Town Councillor. In 1984 he retired from the Department of Transport and moved to Rocky Lake to build a log cabin and retirement home where there was plenty of open space, lots of fishing, and always someone in need of his advice. Moe, affectionately known as Moe-On-Call, Grandpa Gadget, The Old Timer and Mr. Fix-It, was a skilled tradesman who was known for his willingness and ability to help others at any time of day or night. He didn't believe there was anything that could not be fixed and rose to every challenge. His love of work was equalled by his love of play and his enjoyment of family, friends and neighbours. He enjoyed playing cards, watching sports, fishing, boating and golf. He was genuinely interested in everyone and everything. He liked to keep up with current news, events and issues and loved to engage in debates on any topic from technology to politics. Moe loved life and didn't waste a moment of his near 80 years. He is deeply loved and will be sorely missed. The family would like to thank the medical staff, especially Dr. Andrew Dickieson, at the St. Boniface Hospital MICU for their compassionate care during Moe's illness. She worked at the Chocolate Shop, The Pancake House at Polo Park for 17 years and Metro Drugs. Bett stopped working when Albert got sick and after his death, she found joy in spending time with her three young grandchildren. Claire, Milo and Ellen will cherish the memories of afternoons with Grandma. She loved family get-togethers and every gathering was cause for celebration. Bett loved to travel, whether it was enjoying boat cruises with Albert, camping with her girls, or taking weekend jaunts with their friends to country fairs. All who met her saw a woman who loved life, who enjoyed good food and friendship and music. Many will remember Bett as the first one up on the dance floor. She continued to dance and sing with the staff at West Park Manor, her home for the past seven years. A Celebration of Bett's Life will be held on Monday, August 9 at 5:00 p.m. at West Park Manor, 3199 Grant Ave. Her remains will be taken back to Scotland and laid to rest beside those of her husband, Albert. Shona and Sandra are grateful for the kindness, respect and compassion Bett received from her extended family at West Park. They would also like to acknowledge the support and friendship of Mom's friend Helma in Vancouver and of Di and Jimmy Stuart in Scotland. The cards and letters never stopped coming even when Mom was no longer able to appreciate them.
