VILIS ANSONS Suddenly, on the morning of Friday, August 6, 2004 Vilis Ansons passed away while doing what he loved - playing tennis at Victoria Beach. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 25 years and best friend Peggy; daughters, Tamara and Stacy; and his furry friend Lucky. He will also be missed by his sons, Harald and Alan and their families. Born in Riga, Latvia on January 24, 1926 Vilis received his Registered Psychiatric Nursing Degree in 1953 in England. In 1956 Vilis moved to Canada to work at the Selkirk Mental Hospital. Following this, he worked at Stony Mountain Penitentiary for 27 years and then at Tuxedo Villa before retiring in 1998. Vilis loved all sports and his competitive nature was evident both as a participant and as a spectator. He was especially fond of playing tennis, badminton, and chess. Vilis was proud to be a National Umpire for badminton. He was a dedicated father who spent many hours watching his daughters play various sports and even kept personal stats at their volleyball and basketball games. Vilis also loved to travel, and was thrilled to attend Wimbledon with Peggy in 1979 and especially proud to return with his family to his homeland Latvia in 1997. The family is eternally grateful for the quick response and noble efforts from the fellow tennis players, the Victoria Beach community, and the Victoria Beach and Pine Falls medical staff. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 10 at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor with Burial service to follow at the Victoria Beach Cemetery on Thursday, August 12 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial tributes can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or the Victoria Beach Tennis Club, in care of 201 Waverley St., R3M 3K4. PATRICIA EVELYN CLARKE At 2:10 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2004 Patricia Evelyn Clarke passed away, at her side, amazed at her courage and grace were her husband, three children, father and mother. Pat was born icon on November 11, 1947 at the Womens Pavilion in Winnipeg. Pat is survived by her beloved husband of 35 years, Robert; three children, Catharine (Wilfred), Colleen (Darcy), William (Lisa); grandchildren, Tosh, Tiernen, Taggert, Sam, Maggie and Easton; father and mother, Duncan and Mildred Smith; twin sister Pam (Dennis); sister Ginny; brother Gary (Carol); and predeceased by younger brother Grant (1983). Pat was a devoted wife, mother, and gramma, she lived her last 10 years in Gimli and was active in curling, bowling and favourite hobby quilting. Her ever present smile, warmth and generosity drew people to her. The Gimli Hospital must be recognized for their exceptional care. Heartful gratitude to Dr. R.C. Patel and special nurse Julie Kumps for all of their care, kind words and support. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Horizons 55+ Seniors Centre in Gimli, MB. BARRIE CLUBB It is with profound sadness and regret that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, and grandpa, Barrie Clubb, aged 69 years, of Morris, at the Morris General Hospital on Saturday, August 7, 2004, after a long and valiant struggle with emphysema. His memory will forever be cherished by his wife of 47 years Vivian; daughters, Jo-Ann (Kim) Lewis, Heather (Fred) Peters, Michelle Boron (Tim Stapleton); grandsons, Steven (Jeryn) Peters and Michael Lewis. Barrie was born icon February 18, 1935 and raised in the Broadview area, and lived there most of his life. He was elevator agent in Brandon, drove truck for H.W. Construction in Morris, and highway transport for Abe Derksen (Reimer Express Lines). He decided to spend more time closer with his family, and began working for Lou Boaler Shell Agent. Barrie then purchased the Shell Bulk Agency from Lou Boaler, and remained there for many years. Barrie was very active in the community and truly enjoyed it. He was one of the original financial backers for the purchase of an ambulance for the town of Morris; a volunteer ambulance driver for many years; and volunteer fireman for 35 years for which he received a gold watch and ring. A position he cherished was being a Town Councillor for 16 and a half years. He served with the Morris Lions Club for many years as secretary and president. Barrie was predeceased by his parents, Ross and Bethe Clubb; brother James; and infant sister Iris. In accordance with Barrie's wishes, cremation has taken place and there is no formal service planned. A private celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Barrie has left us with a legacy of inner strength, perseverance, warmth, and love. His memory will live on in our hearts forever. DOREEN DARTNELL Doreen Dartnell passed away peacefully with her family at her side at St. Boniface Hospital on August 5, 2004. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, of 63 years Clint; her sons, Terry (Carol) and Michael; sister Edna; grandchildren, Jenean, Michael, Lindsey, Erin and great-granddaughter Kyla. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Matilda Luney; sister Jenny; brothers, Robert, William and John (Jock). Born in Transcona, MB on December 18, 1915 where she attended Central High School until she left to work at Eaton's where she met Clint whom she married in Esquimalt, BC on February 4, 1941. Doreen was a very determined person which enabled her to overcome a 30 year long fear of water, caused by a near drowning accident in 1941, by completing all levels of Red Cross swimming. This led her to become a qualified swimming instructor at the South Calgary YMCA where she taught swimming to children, six months to two years old, "The Water Babies". Her interests were many and varied including knitting for the Manitoba Craft Guild, yoga, ceramics, jogging and swimming. Doreen loved people and her genuine warmth and compassion touched everyone she met throughout her life. The family would like to extend their warmest thanks to the staffs of Concordia, Grace and St. Boniface Hospitals for their exceptional comfort and care. Antonio was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Ligia Ezaltina Soares; his brother Manuel de Sousa; sisters, Maria Jose de Sousa, Eduarda Melo, Natalia de Sousa. He is survived by his children, Jose (Juanita) and Maria Natalia (Mark) Kaminsky; two grandchildren, Peter and Helena Kaminsky; sisters, Maria (Jose) Ferreira, Laura (Jose) d'Arruda; brother Jose (Helena) de Sousa; sister-in-law Gloria de Sousa; brother-in-law Herculano Melo; many nieces, nephews and other relatives in Canada, USA and Azores. ALEXIS EDOUARD GENDRON November 30, 1918 - August 6, 2004 On Friday, August 6, 2004 at St. Boniface Hospital, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully during his afternoon nap. He leaves behind his wife, Blanche (Poiron) of 59 years; his sons, Ronald and Shirley, and their children, Anita (Keith), Christine (Peter) and great-grandchild Landen, Chantal; and Gerald; his daughters, Simone and Claude Nicolas, and their children, Joel, Patricia and Julie; and Marie-Anne and Gary Shewchuk, and their children, Alex, Melanie, Meghan and Adam. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Rose-Anna and Arthur Gendron, and by his sister Amy Spiess. Dad enjoyed country life, but his health brought him to live in the city. He worked at Empire Sash & Door for many years and as well at St. Boniface Hospital. Thanks to all of you who visited Dad in the hospital. A special thank you to Dr. Smith, Dr. Silverman, Dr. Francois, the staff of 6E and chaplain Timothy Fenlon. Merci beaucoup Mme Tarko pour votre amitie envers notre pere. PHYLLIS GATLEY GRAHAM August 1902 - August 2004 At the Riverview Health Centre on Friday, August 6, 2004, eight days short of her 102nd birthday, Phyllis Gatley Graham, widow of George Percival Graham, passed away after a life well lived. Phyllis grew up at the foot of Cambridge Street, the third daughter of prominent Winnipeg dairyman Robert Jefferson and his wife Sarah. She was predeceased by her husband George (1965); three sisters, Dr. Dorothy Jefferson of Vellore, South India, Jean (Mrs. Robert Anderson) of MacGregor and Margery (Mrs. Maurice Gobert) of LeHabre. She leaves to mourn two sisters, Edith (Mrs. George Gobert) of Riverbend Dairy Farm, Winnipeg and Edna (Mrs. Charles Hotel) of Austin, and is survived by her son, Robert Jefferson Graham (Margaret) of Yorkton and their children, David Graham (Maureen), and Kathleen Weber (Brent) both of Yorkton, and Kelly Graham (Mila) of Calgary as well as her daughter Dr. Beverley (Bernard Zakaluk) and their sons, S. Jeff Zakaluk of Calgary, Graham (Mary Chalmers) and Robert (Sandra Willard) Zakaluk of Winnipeg. Phyllis also leaves eight wonderful great-grandchildren, Lisa and Robert Graham; Britanny, Jennifer, and Brooklyn Weber; Geoffery Graham; and Cristine and Paige Zakaluk. After completing high school, Phyllis became a teacher and taught in many one-room schools, including Grahamdale where she met and later married George who gave her the nickname Jeff. To this day, Phyllis is known affectionately as Aunt Jeff by her many surviving nieces and nephews. George and Jeff were avid bridge and cribbage players and, along with Ernie and Marge Goodison, spent many happy days at their summer cottage at Brereton Lake, built immediately after the Second World War. A memorial service in celebration of Phyllis's life will be held on Tuesday, August 10 at 1.30 p.m. in St. Paul's Anglican Church, 830 North Dr., Fort Garry. The family would like to thank the staff on CD3 at Riverview Health Centre for their kind and compassionate care, especially Dorene Rosmus, Patient Care Manager, Kelly, her attentive primary care nurse, and Angele, health care aide. LOUISE KERNATZ Louise Kernatz died Wednesday, August 4, 2004, after a fierce seven-month battle with cancer. She was surrounded by the love and presence of her family. Louise is survived by her husband of 37 years and best friend, Leon Pewarchuk; son and daughter-in-law Colin and Maria Pewarchuk, and her heart's delight, granddaughter Isabella Louise; daughter Kristen Pewarchuk and Gerhard Peters; her mother Edna Genyk; her three sisters, their husbands and children, Donna-Mae and Ed Burgener, Darren and Bruna Burgener and Adam Burgener and Megan Kelly; Gloria-Jean and Ed Pitts, Jeffrey and Heather Pitts and Jeremiah Pitts; Susan Kernatz and Blaine Massie, Erica and Andrew. Louise was born icon in Brandon, MB, on February 24, 1942. She grew up in East Kildonan and started her first career after university as a chemist. She had, however, a lifelong talent and passion for children and learning, and this led her to a career as an inner-city school teacher with the Winnipeg School Division. She was devoted to her students. She became involved with the Winnipeg Teachers' Association (WTA) to make a difference and to improve "The System." Louise served on and chaired many WTA committees, became the president of the WTA and earned its highest award, The Distinguished Service Award. Louise retired with Leon in June 1998 and together they built their dream home overlooking the Assiniboine River near Treherne, MB. She quickly became a part of her rural community. Louise and Leon's home was always an inviting oasis for all of her family, friends and neighbours. Above all, Louise had an unquenching curiosity about the world around her. She was a naturalist, gardener, outdoor explorer, birder, hiker, and was very passionate about natural prairie preservation. Louise loved her cottage at Caliper Lake, ON, and its setting in the Pre-Cambrian Shield. She had a keen interest in early Canadian history and particularly the explorers. From childhood, she shone as a natural leader. She understood the importance of ideas, of exploring them, and of sharing them with others. Louise's ever-present smile, warmth and generosity drew people to her. There will be a farewell service to celebrate her life on Wednesday, August 11 at 1:30 p.m. at The Caboto Centre, 1055 Wilkes Ave., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Louise's memory to either of her two favourite charities: World Vision Canada, One World Dr., Mississauga, ON L5T 2Y4, (866-595-5550), or the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON 1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, (204-787-4143).
