LAURENT (LARRY) MARCOUX It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Laurent G. Marcoux on Friday, August 6, 2004 at the St. Boniface Hospital, after a lengthy illness. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 50 years, Jacqueline; and five children, Laurent Jr. (Lise), Michel (Cheryl), Jocelyne (Serge), Alain and Guy. He will also be remembered by his sister Blanche Sicotte; his sister-in-law Marcelle; and his brothers, Omer (Jeanne) and Lucien (Therese). He dearly loved his grandchildren, Pierre, Andre, Manon, Joelle, Philippe, Tomas, Tessa, Dominique, Janelle and Maxime. His greatest joy was family life at the cottage on Falcon Lake surrounded by the laughter of the grandchildren. He was deeply committed throughout his life to community service, with a keen interest in health and education. He was a charter member of the Cancer Foundation of Manitoba and served on the Advisory Board of the St. Boniface Hospital. He was Chairman of the St. Boniface and Misericordia Schools of Nursing. He served for a number of years as a member of the School Board for the St. Boniface School Division and was a Director of the Family Bureau of Winnipeg. He made a significant contribution to the French speaking community of Manitoba, serving as President of the Association des Commissaires d'ecoles francaises du Manitoba, as a Director of both CKSB la radio-francaise and the Fondation CKSB. He was also a founding member of the Club des hommes d'affaires de langue francaise du Manitoba. A lawyer, senior partner in the law firm of Marcoux, Betournay, Labossiere, he was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1969 and later appointed by Prime Minister Trudeau to the Board of Directors of the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation of Canada. He was also an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3158. He was husband, father, brother and friend, he will be remembered as a kind, loving and compassionate man. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society Canada - Manitoba Region, 204 - 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the Saints-Martyrs-Canadiens Roman Catholic Church, 289 Dussault Ave., presided by Fr. Marcel Toupin. ROY DENNIS MELANSON January 4, 1934 - August 6, 2004 Roy was born icon in Digby, NS, lived in Winnipeg, and the last 30 years in The Pas, MB. Roy worked for Wilkinson Trucking and Lake Shore Landscaping. Roy retired in 2002 so he could enjoy more hunting and fishing. Roy was predeceased by his son Dennis Melanson. Roy leaves to mourn, his companion Fran Gryba; his children, Dwight (Calgary, AB), Dean (Jacqueline), Dave (Peter), Lucy, (Chris) Markwick, Paul, Marc (Michelle), Bridget all from Winnipeg, MB; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; Fran's daughters, Irene (Leo) Lemaire, The Pas and Sandra (Terry) Parlow of Brandon, MB. Also survived by Emma (Allard) Melanson, Linda, Debbie, Shane and Catherine and his mother of Digby, Lucille Amero Barton. A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, August 10 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas with James Hemauer presiding. NELLIE (BILLIE) TAYLOR MILLAR (nee STEWART) January 16, 1925 - August 6, 2004 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Nellie (Billie) Taylor Millar on August 6, 2004. Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Holy Family Nursing Home. Mom was predeceased by her husband Alex in July of 1993 and her only daughter Gladys, in June 2000. She was also predeceased by her parents; stepmother and by many brothers and sisters. Now she will be united with them all. Mom will be mourned and sadly missed by her son Jim and his wife Sheila; sisters, Margaret Nielsen and Nessie Salmon; many nieces and nephews especially Lloyd and Joyce Wood, Kay and Raymond Bourgeois. Mom also had one brother in-law Watt (Ruby) Forbes and one stepbrother and four stepsisters. Mom was born icon in Rathen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and her family immigrated to Canada in 1928 to farm in Beulah, MB. She served in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during the Second World War. She married Alexander Millar on February 7, 1946. Mom worked very hard all her life. She was a supervisor for Chicago Kosher, Schneider's Meats and then Weidman Foods for over 30 years. As if working full time and raising her family wasn't enough work, Mom was very active in her community with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #141, the Branch #141 Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years and the F.O.E. Aries #23 Ladies Auxiliary for 35 years. Mom received many awards for her untiring work for the sick, elderly, disabled and underprivileged. The award she was most proud of was the Palm Leaf, which is the highest awarded given by the Royal Canadian Legion received in 1987. Mom was a very loving and generous person who always put others before herself. She had a great sense of humour and really loved children. She loved it whenever little ones visited her and when she still had her health, was only too happy to babysit for family and friends. A very special thank you to Homecare workers, especially Lilianne and Angie for their kindness, support and hard work. Also a very special thank you to the nurses and all the staff of the St. Francis Unit at Holy Family Nursing Home for your kindness, caring and compassion while Mom was in your care. An extra special thank you to June Moore, mom's favourite. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 11, at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. ROY NORMAN NESBY On August 6, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Roy Nesby, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 77. Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Helen; children, Thomas (Judy), Robert (Carol), Lynn (Don) and Terry; five grandchildren, Lisa, Karen, Lana, Tasha and Ryan; brother Russell and sisters, Gladys McIvor and Lois (Bob) Peterson; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Torger; mother Mabel; his siblings, Myrtle, Clarence, Richard and Violet. Roy was born icon in Transcona. He worked at Canada Packers for forty years as a Second Class Power Engineer until his retirement. He enjoyed carving, curling and baseball. Roy enjoyed travelling and loved to socialize with his friends in the community. The family would like to thank the hospital staff for their loving care and concerns they gave Roy. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, 847 St. Mary's Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King, as well, with Rev. Fr. Renato Pasinato officiating. Interment will follow at the Holy Family Cemetery. GERTRUDE (GERTIE) POIRIER (nee PELLETIER) Peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2004 Gertrude "Gertie" Poirier passed away at St. Boniface General Hospital with her family by her side. Besides her loving husband of 55 years, Ralph "Raoul", she leaves to mourn her two sons, Robert and Bernard "Berny" and his wife Marie (Deault) and grandchildren, Ronald, Natalie and Valerie; one sister-in-law Mrs. Juliette Pelletier. Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, Telesphore and Leda (Pedneault) Pelletier; as well as her brothers, Amedee "Jack", Gustave, Alfred, Jean-Baptiste, and Albert "Bert"; and sisters, Therese Marchand, Angeline "Toots" LaRiviere, and Sister Eva Pelletier (Soeur Gertrude-Marie, fdlc). Born in St. Boniface on May 19, 1915, Gertrude attended boarding school in St. Adolphe. As a young woman, she worked at Sovereign Life and Saskatchewan Wheat Pool where she made many lifelong friends including Marcelle (Rocan) Gaudry, Margaret Fraser and Gladys (Craig) Pavloff. In 1949, she married the love of her life, Raoul, and in her final days she always exhorted us to "look after her daddy". Being the youngest of the family, she was closer in age to many of her nieces and nephews, her welcoming spirit was always ready to accommodate one or more for supper at "Gertie's Inn." After Dad's retirement in 1981, Gertrude always looked forward to her daily breakfast at Salisbury House, where the staff were even more important to her than the meals. Gerturde and Ralph were able to take several trips to Florida and British Columbia, and in later years to Saskatoon to visit the grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of St. Boniface Hospital for their care and attention to Mom's needs, as well as Audrey and Dr. Jean Prenovault of Windsor Park Medical Clinic. Special thanks to her "angel", Wendy Hoffman. Prayers will be offered on Tuesday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. No. 1 East and Navin Road. Funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, August 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Precious Blood Church/L'Eglise Precieux-Sang, 200 Kenny St. (St. Boniface). Rev. Fr. Isaie Blanchette, o.m.i will preside. BLAIR DENNIS WILLIAM ROY Suddenly on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 in Winnipeg, MB, Blair Roy, beloved son of Maureen Roy of Portage la Prairie and William Roy of High Bluff, passed away at the age of 30 years. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and reception will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Herman Prior Centre, Royal Road North, Portage la Prairie. Blair attended Portage schools and graduated from Arthur Meighan High School. Following school he worked for his Dad and at various locations in Winnipeg. For the past several years, Blair was employed at Argus Industries in Winnipeg. Blair valued the strong bond that he developed over the years with his close friends. He was a whiz at computers and loved his cat Lochi. Blair was predeceased by his grandparents, Gladys and Charles Ainslie, and Myrtle and Ed Roy, as well as his uncle Robert Ainslie and aunts, Jean Archer and Lorraine Dark. Besides his parents, Blair is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Ben Haegeman; his nephew Dylan and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. JACK WILLIAM SHAPIRO Peacefully, and surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, August 6, 2004, Jack Shapiro, aged 75, beloved husband, father, zaida, brother, uncle and friend, passed away. He will be missed terribly by his wife of 47 years, Sheila; daughter Sandra; son Cory; his wife Goldelyn; three beautiful granddaughters, Elisabeth, Melissa and Jessica; brothers and sisters-in-law, Izzy and Shirley, and Harry and Ros; nephews and nieces, Paul Shapiro, Charlene and Harry Schwartz, Lori and Lyle Juravsky, Michelle and Michael Tessler and David and Toby Shapiro, and their children. He will be missed by his cousins, Oscar Schulman, Bill Schulman, and Sarah (Schulman) Kastner, with whom he grew up and maintained a close relationship despite living in different countries. He had a special relationship with Oscar's son, Jeff who will miss him greatly. He will be also be missed by family and friends, especially the "minyanaires", with whom he spent many mornings in prayer at the Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue. Dad was predeceased by two wonderful people, his parents, Ben and Esther Shapiro. Dad treated everyone he met with kindness and respect. For him, the family was his world. One of his greatest pleasures was cooking and having the entire extended family over for dinners on holidays. His steaks were legendary. He found a new youth in his granddaughters and spent many wonderful hours with them. Thank you to the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Health Sciences Centre (Unit GA4 and MICU) and at Seven Oaks Hospital (3 Unit 4 and Observation and Emergency) who worked tirelessly to take such good care of Dad, especially in this past month. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the Etz Chayim Synagogue with interment to follow at the Bnay Abraham Cemetery. Pallbearers are, Paul Shapiro, David Shapiro, David Shapera, Harry Schwartz, Michael Tessler and Howard Jesierski. Shiva will be observed at 30 Montcalm Cres. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to CancerCare Manitoba, The Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation or The Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre.

JEAN BERNICE SHUMILAK (HLADKI) (nee BUKOSKI) After a brief illness on Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the Beausejour Hospital, Beausejour, Manitoba Jean Shumilak, beloved wife of the late Kazmir Shumilak of Beausejour, Manitoba passed away at the age of 83 years. Jean leaves to mourn her passing children, Wayne Hladki (Pat), Rick Hladki (Irene Habing) and Carolyn Halowaty (Glenn); as well as her grandchildren, Peter and Kayleigh. Also surviving are sisters, Kay Krut and Minnie Surowich; by her brothers, Edward Bukoski, Johnny Bukoski and Cashmere Bukoski. She was predeceased by her first husband Peter Hladki in 1964 and by her second husband Kazmir Shumilak in 2003; as well as her parents Stanley and Caroline Bukoski; and her brothers, Stanley, Joe, Ted and Alfred; and her sister Pauline. Jean began working at the Beausejour Hospital shortly after her husband Peter passed away in 1964 and remained there until 1980. She loved gardening and her friends. She was especially proud of her family and her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Corder and the entire Nursing Staff of the Beausejour Hospital for the care and compassion shown to our mother during her stay, it will not be forgotten. Prayers will be said on Monday, August 9, at 7:00 p.m. from the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Beausejour, Manitoba. Funeral Liturgy will be Celebrated on Tuesday, August 10, at 10:30 a.m. also from St. Mary's with Fr. Owen Steeves presiding. Interment in the Parish Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darryl Krut, Jim Bukoski, Bernard Shumilak, Peter Halowaty, David Surowich and Brian Bukoski.
