DOUGLAS WILLIAM LYLE HARTMIER It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of our dear brother on August 8, 2004 at the age of 46 years. Douglas is survived by his two sisters, Lynne and Susan; brother Cliff; sister-in-law Deanna; niece Damara; three nephews, Justin, Chris and Cord; many friends and acquaintances. Douglas will be missed by the congregation of Waves of Glory Full Gospel Chapel located at 364 Furby St., and the many people he worked with and served at the weekly soup kitchen sponsored by the Chapel. He will also be missed by the staff and patrons of the Portage and Sherbrook McDonald's location. His life's passion was music and was considered the best locally on the bass guitar. JONATHAN HOFER February 5, 1926 - August 10, 2004 On Tuesday, August 10, 2004, Jonathan Hofer passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 78 years. Jonathan was a loving man who lived life with passion. YVONNE M. HORNICK March 26, 1911 - August 10, 2004 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Yvonne at the age of 93 on August 10, 2004 at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, MB. She will be sadly missed by her six children, Gail (Steve) Yeryk, Gerald (Shirley) Hornick, Marina (Louis) Toupin, Jenny (Amile) Stelmack, Noella (Walter) Wychnenko, William (Dianne) Hornick; 27 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister Elise (Edward) Harel; and brother Roger (Terry) Gomien. She was predeceased by her loving husband William, one great-grandson Joshua, mother, father, five brothers and three sisters. Mom's greatest joy was always her children and their families. Mom gave unselfishly of everything she had, but the greatest gift of all was the love she shared. She touched the lives of so many people. The pallbearers will be grandsons, Mark Yeryk, Jason Hornick, Keith Toupin, Terrance Stelmack, Trevor Wychnenko, and Bradley Hornick. The family would like to thank the staff of Bethesda Hospital for their care and support. MURIEL JENNIE McCONNELL October 7, 1916 - August 10, 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear and precious mother Muriel ("Lou") Jennie McConnell (nee McLaughlin). After years of ill health that she faced with courage and an indomitable spirit, Mom passed away peacefully on August 10, 2004 at the Deer Lodge Centre. She was held in the prayers of many both near and far and was surrounded by her family's love. She was born
in Winnipeg on October 7, 1916 and at the age of one, moved with her parents, Norval ("Mac") and Jennie McLaughlin to the United States. Her early years were spent in the towns of Akron, Canton and Sandusky, Ohio, then, York and Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. While in the U.S., Mom experienced with excitement the joy of becoming a big sister to her brother John ("Bud") Earl and sister Beverly Jean. When Mom was 12 years old, the family returned to live in Winnipeg. Mom's amazing memory and her gift as a story-teller meant that we often heard tales of the neighbours, friends and experiences of those early years both in the U.S. and in Winnipeg. We loved to hear the stories Mom told about growing up in the community of St. Vital. She conveyed to us also her vivid memories of her family's experiences during the 1950 Winnipeg Flood. She shared with us many fond memories of neighbours, friends, classmates and teachers at Norberry and Glenwood Schools and of the special Aunts, Uncles and cousins whom she loved so much. As a child, Mom's memory was honed by the many poems she memorized for her award winning recitations in competitions. Mom never forgot these poems and her memory continued to amaze us all. The church was a very important part of Mom's life. As a girl and young woman she was active at Regent's Park United Church as a member and leader in CGIT, Young Peoples and their Dramatic Society. As a young woman, following the death of her father, Mom worked at the Canadian Wheat Board in the Coding and Checking Department. She made good friends there and spoke fondly of those years. On a summer holiday at Clear Lake, in 1950, Mom met our Dad, William Hugh McConnell and they were married on September 8, 1951. In their early years of married life as their children came along, they made several moves within Winnipeg to homes on Downey, Minto and Clifton, before moving to the house they built at 44 Garnet Bay. There they stayed, and raised their daughter Kathleen; son Ron and daughter Lorna. We remember how Mom and Dad together faced the joys and sorrows, challenges and celebrations of those years with courage, commitment, enthusiasm and love. We were blessed to always know without doubt Mom's love for us, demonstrated in many creative and compassionate ways. Being a loving wife and mother was Mom's first calling in life and her greatest joy. Many other children have also been touched by her motherly affection and care. Most especially, she always said she had "two other children", Jay and Courtney Ross, whom she had cared for when they were small and for whom she remained their special "Aunty". Mom's ever-expanding circle of love grew to include her daughter-in-law, Michele Kines and son-in-law Larry Robinson and she was thrilled to become "Nana" to Larry's daughters, Allison and Shannon. It gave her great joy to do whatever large or small thing she could for them, and each of them in their own way brought much comfort and joy into her life. The church and her faith remained an important part of Mom's life. At Fort Garry United she taught Sunday School, was a member of the UCW and was often asked to lead the devotionals and to share in leading services for residents in the care homes. Following the death of her husband Hugh on December 31, 1998, Mom remained in the family home on Garnet Bay for over two years before moving to the Westhaven in St. James. Although her health was declining, Mom took part in many activities at the Westhaven with her typical enthusiasm, playfulness and spunk. She made some good friends among both residents and staff. Mom especially appreciated, as do we, the particularly caring nurses who visited her through Home Care while she was at the Westhaven. Her final months and weeks were spent at the Grace Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre. The aids, nurses, doctors and other staff there who were especially kind and caring to Mom have our gratitude and thanks. Predeceased by her beloved husband Hugh; her father Norval; mother Jennie and brother Bud, Muriel is survived by her daughter Kathleen; son Ron and daughter-in-law Michele Kines; daughter Lorna and son-in-law Larry Robinson, Allison, Shannon; her sister Bev and brother-in-law Bert Butcher; sister-in-law Pat McLaughlin and nieces and nephews. As Mom so loved and cared for us all, we know that God loves and cares for her now and that together with Dad she is at peace in God's tender and eternal care. Friends and family are invited to the services in memory of Muriel McConnell and celebration of her life. These will begin with a procession from Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd. at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 13. Immediately following interment, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Garry United Church. LOUIS ALVIN OSIOWY May 24, 1931 - August 9, 2004 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear brother Louis, surrounded by the love and presence of his sisters, Helen and Myrtle, on Monday, August 9, 2004, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC at the age of 73 years. Louis leaves to mourn his passing brother Henry, Beausejour, MB; sisters, Jean Crosby (Everett), Whitby, ON, Myrtle Osioway-Thorburn, Winnipeg, MB, Helen Oshiro, Plainsboro, NJ, USA; nieces and nephew, Debbie Whitley (Dave), Dave Crosby (Janet), Karen Smith (Chris) and their families of the Oshawa area, Tanis Oshiro, New York City, NY and Carla Oshiro-Hsin (Ernie), San Francisco, CA; cousins, Stanley Chura (Olga), Beausejour, MB, Eve Ora, Santa Barbara, CA and Steve Chura (Ann), Port Colborne, ON; as well as generations of relatives. Born in Eastdale, MB, Louis lived and worked for several years in Kenora, ON. He loved The Lake of The Woods area. Later moving to Victoria, BC, the city he loved for the quiet and peaceful beauty of the land, ocean, mountains and friendly people. Louis worked for ABC Electric until his retirement. Though he physically stumbled many times from the crippling effects of Polio, he never fell in his life's journey of accomplishments. Struggling with Parkinson's Disease for years, he never questioned why his earthly journey was often long and painful. His strength and determination, his Faith in God and with God always by his side, he lived a happy and exemplary life. Mass Of The Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, August 14 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Beausejour, MB with Rev. Fr. Owen Steeves presiding. Interment will follow in St. Mary Roman Catholic Cemetery. WILLIAM CURTIS PIPER It is with deep sorrow we announce that William Curtis Piper our beloved father, grandfather, brother and son passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness, with family at his side at the Grace Hospital on August 9, 2004. He was predeceased by his father William Piper on May 24, 1990. Curtis will be mourned and sadly missed by his sons, Vincent (Kelly) and Shawn; daughter Cindy; grandchildren, Travis, Brandon, Michael, Ryan and Jacob; brothers, David and Ronald; sisters, Bonnie, Janet, Julie and Karen; and dear mother Evelyn Piper; and many nieces and nephews. in St .Thomas, ON and moved to Winnipeg in 1956. He loved working on old antique cars in his early years and also enjoyed collecting coins and was very proud to show them to family. He loved his family and sent gifts to his grandchildren on their birthdays. He had a fond affection for his dog Nicky. He enjoyed his job of being a courier for Direct Express and continued working throughout his illness. ARTHUR PODJAN October 7, 1926 - August 8, 2004 Peacefully on Sunday, August 8 at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home Arthur Podjan passed away at the age of 77 years. Art was predeceased by his young brothers Henry and Theodore; daughter Carolyn; wife Hazel; son Edward; as well as sisters, Helen (Dot), Elsa; and brother Ernie. He was born
in Southern Manitoba but soon realized the North was were he wanted to be. His journey led him to locations that included Flin Flon, Snow Lake and Thompson. While in the North he was an avid outdoors person who enjoyed fishing and going to the cottage whenever he could. He and his beloved wife and companion Hazel were inseparable through thick and thin until her passing. One only needed to be around the two of them briefly to see how much they truly loved each other. His life was also enriched by his son Edward, daughter Carolyn and his five granddaughters, Darlene, Alana, Pamela, Lisa and Andrea. Art's mechanical and electrical aptitude led him to work in the automobile and heavy equipment repair field. He was employed at several northern service stations as well as operating his own business in Snow Lake, MB. He loved his work and never hesitated to take on a challenge. Art enjoyed "humming" while he worked and his fellow workers soon realized that the intensity of the humming was a clear indication of the difficulty of the task. Later Art went to work for Fort Ignition of Thompson where he finished a very successful career. Arts love of small town living continued when he retired to Boissevain, MB. After setting up housekeeping with his sister Elsa for a short while he welcomed a long time friend and companion into his life, Wilda Lamoureux. Art and Wilda moved into a new condominium together while in Boissevain and later shared a room at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home where Wilda still resides. Art was a member of the Elks Lodge and was an Exulted Ruler. He also was a dedicated and proud Free Mason and Shriner. To know Art was to love him. His respect and caring for others was very evident as he never had a negative word to say about anyone. Sincere thanks to all the staff at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home for their caring support. A celebration of his life will be held at the Wereschuk Funeral Chapel, 447 Selkirk Ave., Winnipeg, on Thursday, August 12 at 2:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place and he will later be laid to rest with his wife Hazel in Thompson, Manitoba. IAN BARCLAY STUART It is with love and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather, Ian Barclay Stuart on August 9, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. Ian died peacefully with his family by his side and surrounded by love. Left behind to cherish his memory are his devoted wife Loretta; children, Sandra, Kim and Kelly (Brent); as well as grandchildren, Alyssa, Taryn, Brett and Taylor; brother Alan and numerous relatives and very close friends. Ian was born
in Winnipeg on October 31, 1931 and spent most of his early years in River Heights and summers at Victoria Beach. Everyone knew Ian was an honest, hard working man even as a young boy delivering telegrams, selling newspapers or working at his family owned business at Western Packers Meat Plant. He later settled in a career at MTS and retired after 42 years of service as a Manager of Network Engineering. MTS is also where Ian met his wife Loretta and August 10, 2004 he would have celebrated his 42nd wedding anniversary. Ian was a chartered member of the Fife and Drum and was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Free Masons, Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Unit 283. Ian was also Manpower Chairman for the Khartum Shriners, Circus Management. Ian enjoyed family vacations and went on many road trips. Ian spent most of his summers at Falcon Lake and winters were spent travelling South to warm destinations or visiting his daughter Kelly (Brent) in Chicago or Florida. Ian was also known for his love for cars and love for animals including his family pets and especially enjoyed going out for breakfast with all his friends. NICK TOKER Peacefully, on August 5, 2004, Nick Toker, aged 72, passed away at Vista Park Lodge. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Nellie; his parents Ann and John, and sister Pearl. Left to cherish his memory are his stepchildren, Sylvia Markewich, Florence (Bill) Schumaker and Albert (Leona) Markewich; brothers, Fred (Helen), Mike, Peter (Doris), Bill (Rose) and Edward (Ollie); sisters, Mary (Bill) Wonchak and Lena (Ed) Megaga and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and extended family. Nick was born
in Ispas, AB and moved to Winnipeg in 1953. He was employed by Winnipeg Hydro from April 1954 until his retirement in March 1993. He served in various capacities with the Winnipeg Hawkeyes Football Club for over 30 years, and called bingo for the St. Andrews Social Club on Euclid Avenue for numerous years. Nick and Nellie made many trips over the years to Alberta and Kelowna, BC to visit with family. He enjoyed calling bingo, playing cards, watching sports on T.V. and looking after his yard. Nick will always be remembered and missed by all who knew him. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Reception will follow in the Glen Eden Reception Centre. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
