MURIEL McCONNELL

August 13, 2004

MURIEL JENNIE McCONNELL October 7, 1916 - August 10, 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear and precious mother Muriel ("Lou") Jennie McConnell (nee McLaughlin). After years of ill health that she faced with courage and an indomitable spirit, Mom passed away peacefully on August 10, 2004 at the Deer Lodge Centre. She was held in the prayers of many both near and far and was surrounded by her family's love. She was born icon in Winnipeg on October 7, 1916 and at the age of one, moved with her parents, Norval ("Mac") and Jennie McLaughlin to the United States. Her early years were spent in the towns of Akron, Canton and Sandusky, Ohio, then, York and Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. While in the U.S., Mom experienced with excitement the joy of becoming a big sister to her brother John ("Bud") Earl and sister Beverly Jean. When Mom was 12 years old, the family returned to live in Winnipeg. Mom's amazing memory and her gift as a story-teller meant that we often heard tales of the neighbours, friends and experiences of those early years both in the U.S. and in Winnipeg. We loved to hear the stories Mom told about growing up in the community of St. Vital. She conveyed to us also her vivid memories of her family's experiences during the 1950 Winnipeg Flood. She shared with us many fond memories of neighbours, friends, classmates and teachers at Norberry and Glenwood Schools and of the special Aunts, Uncles and cousins whom she loved so much. As a child, Mom's memory was honed by the many poems she memorized for her award winning recitations in competitions. Mom never forgot these poems and her memory continued to amaze us all. The church was a very important part of Mom's life. As a girl and young woman she was active at Regent's Park United Church as a member and leader in CGIT, Young Peoples and their Dramatic Society. As a young woman, following the death of her father, Mom worked at the Canadian Wheat Board in the Coding and Checking Department. She made good friends there and spoke fondly of those years. On a summer holiday at Clear Lake, in 1950, Mom met our Dad, William Hugh McConnell and they were married on September 8, 1951. In their early years of married life as their children came along, they made several moves within Winnipeg to homes on Downey, Minto and Clifton, before moving to the house they built at 44 Garnet Bay. There they stayed, and raised their daughter Kathleen; son Ron and daughter Lorna. We remember how Mom and Dad together faced the joys and sorrows, challenges and celebrations of those years with courage, commitment, enthusiasm and love. We were blessed to always know without doubt Mom's love for us, demonstrated in many creative and compassionate ways. Being a loving wife and mother was Mom's first calling in life and her greatest joy. Many other children have also been touched by her motherly affection and care. Most especially, she always said she had "two other children", Jay and Courtney Ross, whom she had cared for when they were small and for whom she remained their special "Aunty". Mom's ever-expanding circle of love grew to include her daughter-in-law, Michele Kines and son-in-law Larry Robinson and she was thrilled to become "Nana" to Larry's daughters, Allison and Shannon. It gave her great joy to do whatever large or small thing she could for them, and each of them in their own way brought much comfort and joy into her life. The church and her faith remained an important part of Mom's life. At Fort Garry United she taught Sunday School, was a member of the UCW and was often asked to lead the devotionals and to share in leading services for residents in the care homes. Following the death of her husband Hugh on December 31, 1998, Mom remained in the family home on Garnet Bay for over two years before moving to the Westhaven in St. James. Although her health was declining, Mom took part in many activities at the Westhaven with her typical enthusiasm, playfulness and spunk. She made some good friends among both residents and staff. Mom especially appreciated, as do we, the particularly caring nurses who visited her through Home Care while she was at the Westhaven. Her final months and weeks were spent at the Grace Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre. The aids, nurses, doctors and other staff there who were especially kind and caring to Mom have our gratitude and thanks. Predeceased by her beloved husband Hugh; her father Norval; mother Jennie and brother Bud, Muriel is survived by her daughter Kathleen; son Ron and daughter-in-law Michele Kines; daughter Lorna and son-in-law Larry Robinson, Allison, Shannon; her sister Bev and brother-in-law Bert Butcher; sister-in-law Pat McLaughlin and nieces and nephews. As Mom so loved and cared for us all, we know that God loves and cares for her now and that together with Dad she is at peace in God's tender and eternal care. Friends and family are invited to the services in memory of Muriel McConnell and celebration of her life. These will begin with a procession from Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd. at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 13. Immediately following interment, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Garry United Church. Donations in memory of Muriel McConnell may be made to Fort Garry United Church or to the Manitoba Lung Association. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211

Mary was predeceased by her cherished husband of 63 years, Edward; her parents, Thomas and Alice Hutniak; infant daughter Violet and baby Edward; sister Nellie Mroz; twin brothers, John and Fred Hutniak; brothers-in-law, Paul, John, Bill, Edward and many of Ed's family. Mary was born icon in Brokenhead, MB on December 5, 1913. After moving to Allegra, Mary attended Bonar-Law School, and eventually met Edward, the love of her life. She was proud of the fact that she was baptized and married at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, which is now a part of a heritage museum in Beausejour, MB. Mary was a model for faith and resiliency, optimism, and above all, family. Working side-by-side with Dad, Mom's home was her castle, and she lovingly drew everyone into it. All special days were celebrated there, and with her boundless love for children - young and old, related and neighbouring - she truly showed us what "God's family" means. With a strong sense of faith, Mary became a founding member of the C.W.L. at St. Thomas RC Church in Allegra, and received her 25 year pin from St. Anthony of Padua Church in 2003. Mary loved to learn and was ever thankful to Uncle Mike for teaching her how to read and write Ukrainian, a skill she used to bond her family with those in the Ukraine. Her trips to Russia, the Ukraine, Hawaii, and the Caribbean created her love of culture, which was further extended through Folklorama and her caring Home Care ladies from Ethiopia, "The Islands", etc. Thanks Cindy, Elainie, Joan, Patricia, et al. Our family joins Mary's wishes in thanking Dr. Szajkowski for his long standing care of Mom; Fr. Terry, and Fr. Nestor and Stella for their visits, masses and blessings. We thank Eleanor, Eddie, Barbara and Alice for their frequent calls and chats; Fr. Nestor and Fr. Dado for the sacramental rites and prayers; and the wonderful staff of Seven Oaks Hospital, Third Floor, Unit 5 for their gentle compassionate care for Mom. She is survived by her daughter Anna Marie; son Joel and his children, Tristan, Elysha and Jenna-Marie and their mother Nielle; son Leif and daughter-in-law Aggie and their children, Zachary and Emily; and their father Edward. Mom was born icon and raised in Riverton where other than time spent in Winnipeg, B.C. and the Yukon, she spent most of her 66 years. Her family was the most important part of her life. She loved us unconditionally and treasured us as we were. She especially loved her grandchildren and she loved being a grandma! She gave lots of hugs and kisses and often told them "Grandma loves you!" Mom was a very talented lady. Like her mother Mary, there was nothing that she couldn't cook, bake, sew or knit! She absolutely loved cooking and everything tasted great. Grandma's cookie jar was always full and we never left home without a care package of mom's goodies. She was an extremely talented sewer, a craft she learned from her mother on the old Singer treadle sewing machine. She was an especially creative knitter and made many one of a kind sweaters without using a pattern. Mom's other passion was reading. She loved books and she encouraged us all to read. We will remember her loving manner, her ready smile, her sense of humour and her love of music. We were blessed to have her and we will miss her so much. We love you. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 14 at 12 noon at the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church in Riverton with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. Interment at the Riverton Cemetery followed by coffee reception at the church. SOPHIE SZCZERSKI

August 13, 2004

WIESLAWA ZOFIA (SOPHIE) SZCZERSKI Finally free of her limitations and frailties of age, our Mama, Babci and friend peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2004. Sophie was predeceased by her parents and husband (1996). She is survived by her three children and six grandchildren: daughter Benna (Sandy) Thornton-Trump; sons, Ed (Doreen) and Tom (Yvonne) Szczerski. Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren, Ian (Marcella) Thornton-Trump, Ellowyn (Jason) Nadeau, Carl, David, Michael and Andrea Szczerski. Born on January 2, 1923 in Janow Lubelski, Poland, Sophie was the only child of Maria Lodzia-Michalska and Kazimierz Dybczynski. She was educated at home until at the age of 14, when she left home to attend the Urseline Convent in Lublin, Poland. During her time in school and living in an occupied Poland, she developed fortitude of spirit that would become a defining characteristic throughout her life. Sophie met Mihal Edward Szczerski during the war and they were married in 1942. Circumstances of war caused numerous separations until 1949 when Sophie and her daughter arrived in Canada via Halifax at the now famous Pier 51. Making her way in February to Winnipeg, the newly reunited family finally settled in the Fort Rouge area and bought a house on Nassau Street, which was home for many years. Sophie and Edward had two sons to add to their family: Edward and Tomasz. Sophie worked for many years at Quinton's Cleaners before she left for a career at Manitoba Telephone System. She worked in the Directory and Traffic Departments, retiring in 1987. Her joy was to walk with her dog, Brandy and explore the neighborhoods she lived in. In her recent move to Catherine Place, she felt the sharp loss of having to give up her little four-legged friend, whom she missed deeply every day. Before her loss of vision she greatly enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, knitting, sewing, reading and before it was deemed unhealthy, sun tanning! Her loss of vision in recent years restricted her activities, yet it did not diminish her spirit or interest in the world. She had a sharp mind and loved to engage her visitors in stories from the past and news in the present. She had an opinion on everything and was not shy to share it with others! The family wishes to thank Dr. R Hayward for his long continued care and express our appreciation for the compassion of Dr. Mowat and the staff of the Emergency Unit of the St. Boniface Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be said at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. on Wednesday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Missionaries of Charity, 167 Aikins St. or the Heart and Stroke Fund. May Dad and Mama be reunited and rest in peace. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 McGillivray Blvd -1-877-230-0438

JEAN BARNSON

August 14, 2004

JEAN BARNSON March 10, 1915 - August 11, 2004 Quietly while tending her flower garden, Jean, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother slipped away to join her life partner, Kully. Born, raised and educated in Winnipeg, Jean met her husband Carl while working in her father's restaurant (Stan's Cafe) on Eveline Street in Selkirk. Jean and Carl were married on February 19, 1936 and worked closely together for the next 62 years. They started out in the carpentry business, then owned and operated Carl's Grocery on Main Street, Selkirk for 18 years and then built and renovated houses until their retirement in 1980. They knew and worked with many of the Selkirk residents in those years. Having a green thumb, house plants and gardens flourished under Jean's nurturing care. She enjoyed tending her multi-coloured flower beds, raspberries, strawberries, apple and plum trees until this year when failing health and poor eyesight prevented her from doing so. Her family was the central core by which her life revolved. Generous with her time and advice, she was sought out for her business sense and sage wisdom. She looked forward to her weekly phone calls from her daughter-in-law (Vickie), grandchildren, and daily call from friend Leona. She eagerly anticipated summer visits from out of town family. Visiting relatives were often treated to hands on experience in plumbing, electrical work, shimming doors, roof tarring or lawn mower repair. No one left without attaining at least one of these skills. When she could no longer participate in these activities, she could accurately instruct others to do so. Quilting hand carded woolen quilts and knitting sweaters for her family was Jean's winter project. Timmy, her canary, kept her company between visits from family. Mentally alert and physically active, Jean preferred to shovel snow in winter and mow her own lawn to keep fit (seldom heeding her doctors advice to "slow down"). Despite her failing eyesight Jean remained in her own home as her own independent spirit dictated. Accepting assistance from Home Care since June, Jean was particularly fond of Bertha and Karen for their kindness. Predeceased by her husband Carl (Kully) in 1998; daughter Vi in 1999; grandson Benzie 2003; sister Minnie; and brothers, Stan, Nick, Danny and Johnny. Jean leaves to mourn her sons, Bob (Vickie) and Art (Donna) and son-in-law Walt Cook; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Barney Barnson (Carol) Clay, Cody, Clint; Valdeen Short (Gene) Reese; Jim Barnson (Marjke) Erika; Cindy Barnson Craig, Lee, Bailey; Carl Barnson (Christine) Scott, Daniel; Bill Cook; Tracey Cook; Tammy Topp (Brian) Paul, Ashley; Christine Cantor (David) Joash, Avniel, Shoshana; Brent Barnson. Nieces and nephews: Ralph Larson, Gordon Barnson (Lorraine), Betty Hart (Colin) Joyce Fore, Wayne Martin (Dianne) and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Cremation as per Jean's wishes has taken place. A Memorial Service to celebrate Jean's life will be held on Tuesday, August 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, MB. Interment to follow in the Lutheran Cemetery. She will be sadly missed. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
