EVELYN GLADSTONE Peacefully, on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 Evelyn Gladstone passed away at Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 82 years. Evelyn will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Joe, her best friend and devoted husband of nearly 58 years; her daughter Frances (Jim); son Len (Arlene); grandchildren
, Adam, Talia, Ryan and Brett; and great-granddaughter Hayley. She also leaves to cherish her memory three brothers, Reg, Elmer and Glen Carther; four sisters, Pearl McCorquodale, Doreen Nicklen, Cora Moffat and Shirley Conners; as well as many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, George and Viola Carther; brother Telford Carther and sister Melba Thom. Evelyn led a very active, fulfilling life. Together with her husband Joe she travelled extensively, danced, bowled, curled, golfed and played tennis. Somehow in between she also found time to pursue her love of cooking and baking. In her travels with Joe they discovered the "aloha" of Hawaii and decided to make it their second home during the winter months. Throughout her life Evelyn had an active involvement in the community serving as President of the Rosh Pina Synagogue Sisterhood, President of Aliyah Chapter of Hadassah, and President of the Ladies' Golf Association of Glendale Country Club. Evelyn was kind and generous in all aspects of her life and gave tirelessly of her time. She was a source of strength, courage and devotion to both family and friends. Even as her health failed she remained the embodiment of great will and courage. Independence, strength and a sense of purpose characterized her life. Her passing leaves a huge void in our lives, but she will always be remembered with love. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and all the caring and supporting staff of 3 East at Riverview Health Centre. We also wish to express to our family and friends our gratitude for their unfailing kindness and support. Funeral services were held August 6, 2004 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue officiated by Rabbi Alan Green. Pallbearers were Adam McGinnes, Talia McGinnes, Ryan Gladstone, Brett Gladstone, Morley Chess, Zivy Chudnow and David Meyrowitz. ANNE ELAINE GOERTZEN April 2, 1922- August 12, 2004 Peacefully and surrounded by Ed, James, Joy, Lois, Sharon, and Tim; Mom completed her sacred journey on August 12, 2004. Over the last years, Mom continued to live life to its fullest while she faced the challenges of her illness. For Mom this included her family, music, gardening, travels, cottage, scrabble, volunteering, and life long learning. Mom has joined Dad in heaven and is lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren: Sharon, Ron, and Melissa; Lois, Gerhard, Jonathan, and Anna; James, Kathleen, Tyrone, and Aidan; Joy and Tom; Tim, Kendra, Brenley, and Delaney along with her companion and special friend Ed. Mom is also in the hearts of her sister and brothers: Marie and Leo, Ernie and Evelyn, Lawrence and Bunny and all of her nieces and nephews. Mom was born
and raised in Gretna, Manitoba. Her passion for teaching and learning began at Normal School and continued with piano lessons in her home, German school, and English as a Second Language. We were all very proud when in her 60's she graduated from the University of Manitoba with her Bachelor of Education. Mom was always teaching and learning whether that was new musical pieces on her recorder, Spanish for travelling adventures, new gardening techniques with Ed, or business acumen for Anne's Bed and Breakfast. She instilled the love of learning in her children and her grandchildren and was very proud and supportive of all their interests and achievements. Mom was a singer and a performer on the piano, organ, and recorders. She conducted children's choirs, performed in special recorder groups, and sang in Church, Oratorio and community choirs. She supported the careers of other musicians by fundraising and ushering through the Women's Committee of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Her love of music set the stage for the musical careers of all her children and grandchildren and she was their most admiring supporter at all of their performances. Mom's relationship with many of her friends and God were centred within the Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship. Mom and Dad were instrumental in the establishment of the fellowship as well as Moose Lake Mennonite Camp. The many activities and relationships that she developed through these associations were of vital importance to her. We will celebrate her life at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 16, (150 Bayridge Avenue in Fort Richmond, Winnipeg). A family interment will be held at the Mennonite Memorial Gardens. For Mom and Dad, the family cottage and Moose Lake Mennonite Camp were an important part of their lives and gave them many cherished memories. Mom loved and appreciated flowers. However, we would appreciate continuing support of Mom and Dad's education legacy through the Henry and Anne Goertzen Scholarship Fund (Care of Camps with Meaning, 200-600 Shaftesbury Boulevard, Winnipeg, R3P 0M4). Prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Thomson "In the Park," 1291 McGillivary Boulevard, Winnipeg. Our family wishes to thank the staff of the fifth floor of the Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care of Mom over the last few weeks including: Margaret, Pat, Jennie Elvira, Gundy, Jas, Frances, Cheryl, and Ken.

ELSIE JANET FRIEDA GRIFFITHS (nee PATON) December 31, 1910- August 9, 2004 The family of Elsie is deeply saddened to announce her passing, early Monday morning at Tuxedo Villa. She will be lovingly remembered by Reginald, her husband of 73 years; her six children and 13 grandchildren, Dorothy (Dave), her family Lois (John), Jamie (Jackie) and Ronnie (Monique); Mae, her family Donnie, Dawna and Dena (Rick); Tom (Alice) and son Neal (Lucile); Betty, her family Debbie (Lyle), Karen and Bryon; Doreen (Peter); Marjorie (Allen) and her family Kim, Kerry (Steve) and Pam; 18 great-grandchildren; and her nephew, Lawrence (Terry). She was predeceased by her parents, John (1943), Frieda (1966); brother Victor (1976); sister Violet (2002); grandson Warren (1984); and son-in-law Merv (1992). Elsie was born
in the Baie St. Paul area of Manitoba where she attended Belcourt and Allarie schools. In 1931, she married Reg and they took over the family farm, remaining there until their retirement to Oakville, MB in 1987. They enjoyed ten years there with old and new friends. In 1997, they moved to Charleswood to be nearer to their family. This year on June 10, they celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. For many years, Elsie was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church and secretary of St. Paul's ACW for 45 years. Together, Elsie and Reg were members of the Poplar Point Horticultural Society and the Belcourt Community Club. The family wishes to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for all the care and compassion Elsie received during the last 20 months of her life. Also many thanks to all her homecare workers over the last three years she was at home. Elsie was loved by all who knew her and she will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Monday, August 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment to take place at a later date. HAZEL IRENE HORKOFF Hazel Irene Horkoff passed away quietly in the Victoria General Hospital on July 5, 2004. She was born
in Roseau County, MN on March 20, 1910, the fifth of six children born
to the late Evan and Dena Ericson. She was predeceased by her brother and four sisters, her husband Sam Horkoff, and by her son-in-law Dave Trainor. Hazel was a quiet home-body, enjoying particularly reading and sewing. Her favourite activity was sitting in her own living room with her family around her. She loved children and trees, had a limited number of close friends and enjoyed pleasant relationships with everybody. She is mourned by her daughter Avonne Trainor; by her granddaughter Pat MacRae, her husband Murray and their daughters, Samantha, Elizabeth and Anna; by her grandson Joe Trainor, his wife Terry and their sons, John and Max; by a number of nieces and nephews in various parts of Canada; by Nancy and Bill Mitchell and their family; and by Kathryn Miles and her daughters, Lois Rose and Joanne McGregor. The family wishes to thank the staff and friends at Juniper House in Rosewood Village for the love and care shown Hazel during the last four years. Nancy and Gretha were particularly dear to her. Sincere thanks go also to the third floor staff of the Victoria General Hospital, whose kindness made Hazel's last month less difficult. She loved her doctor, Dr. Karen Boyd, and so do we all. in Neepawa, MB to Thomas and Annie Pryde and lived in Winnipeg all her life until 1992 when she moved to Toronto to be near her daughter. Before having her family, Lynda worked as a commercial artist and later in life was a long-standing member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club. She resided at Fudger House in Toronto for nearly six years. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Paulette Touby of Toronto (Mrs. Frank); son Paul Huebert of Winnipeg; her daughter-in-law Sylvia Huebert of Winnipeg; granddaughters, Terry Huebert of Saskatoon and Debra Huebert of Toronto; sisters-in-law, Mary Morrow of Ottawa and Kay Pryde of Vancouver. She was predeceased by her husband Val; her son Richard; and her brothers, Roy and Bob. Her family thanks her dear companion Ligaya Domingo and the compassionate staff at Fudger House, for making the unbearable bearable. ALEXANDER KIPKALO Peacefully, on August 11, 2004 Alexander Kipkalo, aged 77, passed away at the Grace Hospice. Alex was born
in Slaviansk, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1948. He joined the Canadian Army in 1951 until 1970 and then worked for Unicity Taxi until his retirement in 1985. He was predeceased by his wife Edith in 1986. Alex is survived by his brother-in-law Heinz Brau and his friends in Winnipeg. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 19 at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. STANLEY WALTER KNOWLES Two months short of his 89th birthday, Stan passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at the Maples Personal Care Home. He is survived by his son Ray; daughter Sheila Bross (Michael) of Montreal; granddaughters, Kathryn, Kelly (Dean), Karen-Rae (Luke) of New Zealand; daughter-in-law Dorothy; grandson Andrew Bross of Montreal; and great-granddaughter Madison of New Zealand. Stan was predeceased by his wife Maude Bernice (Poppy) of 49 years of marriage; brothers, Frank and Charles; and sisters, Jenny and Jessie. Kathryn will fondly remember the stories her grandfather shared with her during her many visits with him throughout the years when he entertained her with many poignant and sometimes hilarious stories of his childhood years and growing up in old St. Andrews. When Stan left home to make his way in the world, he moved to Winnipeg and studied to be a "sign maker". Back when the store signs were hand-painted, his signs were featured in many small stores in downtown Winnipeg. To further his career, he worked long hours, as well as taking courses at night. Stan then joined the Hudson Bay Company in his mid 20s and was a dedicated employee for the next 40 years. Early in his career, he worked in the Display Department designing interior layouts. Later, he joined the staff at Hudson Bay House where he worked on store planning in Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. After his retirement in 1980, Stan continued to put his creative talents to work doing layouts for many boutiques and small stores for the next five years. Stan was an ardent golfer and a member of both the Winnipeg Canoe Club and Assiniboine Golf Club, golf well into his late 70s. He was a talented craftsman and took pride in his carpentry and renovation work. He had an appreciation of the outdoors and always looked forward to winter's end when he could get out and plant his garden. Each year, he and his wife Poppy, enjoyed a winter break in Hawaii, where he loved to swim and surf in the ocean. Stan was deeply curious about the world at large and until his death, kept a chronicle in binders (74 in all) of clippings from newspapers and magazines about politics, entertainment, religion, history and sports. He was a spiritual man who believed that religion went far and beyond one faith. On August 3, Stan being a diabetic, slipped into a coma and passed on one day later. As per his wishes, a private ceremony was held on Monday, August 9 in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Ave. at Sharp Boulevard with the immediate family in attendance. Ray and Sheila would like to thank the staff of the Maples Personal Care Home for their warmth and kindness in caring for their father for the past three and a half years. GEORGINA LEVEQUE (nee BEAUDRY) 1917 - 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, Georgina Leveque on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Tache Nursing Centre at the age of 87 years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Leo in 2000; son Lionel in 1991; sister Adele (Raymond); brother Leo (Irene); and brother Denis (Therese). Left to cherish her memory are her children, Berthe (Isaie), Gilbert (Marielle); daughter-in-law Arny; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanne (Arthur), Anne (Louis); brothers, Henri (June), and Maurice (Caroline). She attended grade school in South-Junction, then St. Anne's Convent, St. Charles Convent, and graduated at Academie St. Joseph. She enjoyed many evenings playing piano for whoever cared to listen and accompanying her brother-in-law's fiddle tunes. Also, playing cards and doing crafts, volunteered playing piano at Deer Lodge Hospital, played the organ in church for 50 years and always looked forward to having visitors. A very special thank you to her sister Anne and husband Louis for the care and compassion throughout her final years, also, to her brother-in-law Romeo for his faithful visits. The family wish to acknowledge the staff of 2 ABC Tache Centre where they provided excellent care and made Mom and family comfortable during her time there. Sandra was proud to be a teacher and at the time of her passing Sandra was teaching at the Alhigra Islamic School whose teachers and students will miss her dearly. WANDA LUBINSKI (nee BIJAK) Peacefully, on Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the Seven Oaks General Hospital, Wanda passed away at the age of 79 years. She is survived by her children, Krystyna, Robert (Kay) and Gloria (Jarek); six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Wanda was predeceased by her husband Jan in February 2000. In 1925, Wanda was born
in Czeladz, Poland, to Jan and Stanislawa Bijak. Wanda and Jan were married in 1946 and immigrated to Canada in 1960 with their two children, Krystyna and Robert and then their third child, Gloria was born. She was a tremendous cook and enjoyed working in her garden. In accordance with Wanda's wishes and with prayers from Fr. Kazimierz of the Holy Ghost Parish, she was laid to rest with her dear husband Jan. Special thanks to Dr. Lerner, Dr. Kreml, the staff of the fifth floor and ICU for their kindness and compassion towards Mom and to her family to the end. Special thanks to her "angels," Sharon and Rena, for their years of dedication; as well, many thanks to all her friends who comforted her through her many illnesses and are now comforting her family. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving mother Pauline. He was predeceased by his father, grandmother and grandfather and by his beloved dog Lady. Casper the cat will miss him. Danny worked for Pauwels Canada Inc. from 1972 to 2004. He dearly loved animals and birds, always taking injured birds home and letting them go when they could fly.
